lines on white paper. Although at the present time design engineers are using computers

and other modern production processes that use different colors, they still

call engineering drawings “blueprints” (Ware 1999). Figure 14.1 depicts an example

of a blueprint that was done using today’s technology. Engineering drawings

can be used in manufacturing, construction, operation, installation, maintenance,

and other applications. They are made in a way that should be understandable for

all users. Especially when these drawings are used between two or more countries

it is essential that a drawing prepared in one can be easily and correctly interpreted

by someone in the other country or countries. These countries don’t have

to speak the same language or use the same units of measure. The drawing can be

understood and translated based on the international standards provided by ISO/

TC 10 technical drawings standards (ISO 2002).

• Tolerance
