NOTEworthy JULY MARRED BY VIOLENCE AT CHALDEAN STORES July was a violent month at Chaldean-owned stores both in Metro Detroit and California. Local authorities have arrested three people who are believed to have been involved in the robbery and shooting of Matthew al-Sheikh at the Farmington Hills Mug & Jug Fine Wine & Liquor Shoppe on July 5. Farmington Hills Police, the South Oakland Narcotics Intelligence Consortium officers, St. Clair Shores Policed Department and Oak Park Public Safety identified and located the alleged perpetrators after receiving a phone call from a witness in response to media coverage of the robbery. Two armed men wearing clear masks entered the store at about 9 p.m. They used handcuffs to lock the front door, police said, and then approached al- Sheikh, who was behind the counter. Surveillance video showed one man pistol whipping al-Sheikh, who is Chaldean, as he was trying to open the cash register. He had difficulty opening the register and was then shot. Al-Sheikh, 25, underwent emergency surgery and is recovering from a bullet wound to the abdomen. “We are relieved that these three violent felons are now in custody and are unable to cause further injury or death,” Farmington Hills Police Chief William Dwyer to told WDIV-TV. In another case, the Wireless Giant store on Little Mack in St. Clair Shores was robbed over Fourth of July weekend by two men, according to police. Investigators said two men slammed a female clerk to the floor and threatened her with handguns. The suspects were in and out of the store in less than a minute and took hundreds of dollars as well as 15 to 20 new cell phones, according to police. The woman attacked at the time of robbery returned to work a few days later. “I had two guns in my head and they took phones, money, my wallet, cash — it was very scary,” the 27-year-old clerk told WXYZ-TV. Police say that the robbers fled the scene in a black, late 1990s Thunderbird. The vehicle was driven by a third man. In a third incident, a father and son were shot in an attempted robbery at Narra’s at 7 Mile and Schoenherr in Detroit on July 18. According to published reports, a gunman entered the store at 9:30 p.m. wearing a dark baseball cap with a light-blue bandana covering his face. He announced a holdup and shot the owner and his 15-year-old son when they attempted to close the door and get to the counter behind the bulletproof glass. Chaldean News’ requests for further information from the store were refused. Finally, a Chaldean was killed at a San Diego liquor store on July 13. Police are searching for a robber who opened fire at the store, shooting and killing Doraid Akram Toma of El Cajon, a visiting salesman. When police responded to a call of shots fired at T & M Liquor of El Cajon, Toma was found wounded and lying on the floor. Officers performed CPR on Toma until relieved by paramedics, but he was not revived and was pronounced dead at the scene. According to Channel 10 News of San Diego, Toma and the store manager were talking near the cash register when the gunmen entered the store and shot Toma, police said. Toma fell to the ground and the robber aimed at the manager who was standing next to the counter. The assailant shot Toma a second time as he lay on the floor. The gunmen then shot at the manager once more, again missing, police said, and then fled. Anyone with information is urged to contact CrimeStoppers at (888) 580-8477. ESHOO URGES SUPPORT OF IRAQI RELIGIOUS DIVERSITY U.S. Rep. Anna Eshoo (D-Palo Alto, California) has offered an amendment to H.R. 2601, the Foreign Relations Authorization Act, to protect indigenous Christians in Iraq from continuing religious persecution and political exclusion. The amendment unanimously passed the House by a voice vote. “Iraqi Christians welcome the opportunity to move beyond the days of repression and persecution,” said Eshoo. “They wish nothing more than to be able to fully cooperate and participate in the development of a democratic, pluralistic state, and the commitment provided by this amendment gives them great promise.” Eshoo’s amendment urges the departments and agencies of the U.S. Government to pay special attention to the welfare of ChaldoAssyrians and other Iraqi Christians who have been the subject of great harassment and intimidation even after the fall of Saddam Hussein. The amendment also calls on President Bush and his administration to work with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to dedicate funding for the promotion of welfare and education, as well as the resettlement for these minority groups in Iraq. “These groups receive a disproportionately small share of the reconstruction and developmental resources available, which in turn has spurred the emigration of as many of 80,000 Iraqi Christians since liberation,” Eshoo said. “ChaldoAssyrians and other native Iraqi Christians are not only being ostracized and repressed, they are also being kept from their homes,” she added. “Protecting the rights of minority groups and ensuring that all individuals in Iraq — regardless of religious affiliation or ethnic background — are given the tools they need to succeed is critical to establishing a fullyfunctioning and sustainable democracy.” Eshoo has served in the House of Representatives since 1993. She is currently the only Assyrian- American member of Congress. CULTURAL CENTER ‘MILKS’ LARGE DONATION More than $100,000 a year will be donated to the Chaldean Community Cultural Center by Country Fresh Dairy. The firm includes Melody Farms, which was founded by Michael George. Country Fresh is giving the CCCC a 1 percent rebate on all dairy products (except ice cream) sold at Chaldean-owned stores. Ice cream may be added in 2006. Based on existing volume, the rebate will exceed $100,000 per year. “I am very happy to have the company participate,” said George. “They were asked for a donation but this is even better because it’s a perpetual donation.” The program will be administered by Jerry Shannon of Country Fresh, who will work directly with George. Store owners who are not customers of Country Fresh milk and wish to participate in the program can call the (734) 261-7980. “The Chaldean Cultural Community Center will be a monument for the whole world to understand Chaldeans and their history back to ancient Babylon,” George said. “I expect the CCCC to be a national showplace.” The CCCC, located in Shenandoah Country Club in West Bloomfield, is expected to open in late 2006. LEST WE FORGET Family members of Sean A. Seman gathered at his burial site at Holy Sepulchre on July 19 on what would have been his 28th birthday. Seman was killed on May 12, 2001 in an apparent drive-by shooting in Detroit. He and his cousin, Jerome Yono, and friend, Damon Loussia, went to Space in Detroit that night and were shot at after leaving the club. Details of the crime are still murky, and despite a $50,000 reward posted by the family, police have received no tips. The only real clue is that the assailants were driving a red and white Bronco. “It’s hard for everyone to move on,” said Sean’s sister, Sandra Mearim.
