The 2023 edition of the AMSA Internship Guide is now available to read! This is the AMSA guide for the 2024 clinical year. This guide could not have been possible without the contribution of medical students, hospital management teams, interns, AMA and many other people volunteering their time to update the information. For example, we have added eight new health networks across all states and territories to the internship guide. Good luck to the class of 2023! We hope that the information within this guide can be beneficial for you during your internship applications. If you have any queries or feedback about the guide, please do not hesitate to email pdo@amsa.org.au.

VICTORIA
The Victorian Rural Generalist Program (VRGP) is a statewide end-to-end Rural
Generalist training program that allows the future rural generalist workforce to
train, work and live in rural and regional Victoria. Trainees will gain access to
training positions across a variety of clinical settings, both hospital-based and
community based, to provide a rich clinical training experience that demonstrates
the variety of rural generalist career options in Victoria.
The VRGP training positions align with the existing junior medical officer positions
and general practice training programs. All program participants must
demonstrate rural career intentions and be enrolled in, intending to or in the
process of enrolling in general practice training.
2024 VGRP REGIONS
Barwon South West Region
Grampians Region
Loddon Mallee Region
Hume Region
Gippsland Region
For further information on the Victorian Rural Generalist Program, please visit:
https://www.vicruralgeneralist.com.au
There are also a number of other health services in rural and regional Victoria that
employ interns.
Last year PMCV introduced some changes to the Victorian Intern Match. Medical
graduates are eligible to apply through the Victorian Rural Preferential Allocation
process and selection is based on merit. The Victorian Rural Preferential Allocation
match is a parallel first-round match for students with a strong rural interest. All
rural health services submit internship positions into the match, and Victorian
Rural Generalist Program (VRGP) places will only be available through the VRPA.
Students successful in obtaining a Victorian Rural Generalist intern position are
generally allocated to the training region for 12 months. Students interested in the
program can apply through the PMCV Allocation and Placement Service website
(register for the Victorian Intern Match and indicate that you wish to be part of the
Victorian Rural Preferential Allocation round).
