The 2023 edition of the AMSA Internship Guide is now available to read! This is the AMSA guide for the 2024 clinical year. This guide could not have been possible without the contribution of medical students, hospital management teams, interns, AMA and many other people volunteering their time to update the information. For example, we have added eight new health networks across all states and territories to the internship guide. Good luck to the class of 2023! We hope that the information within this guide can be beneficial for you during your internship applications. If you have any queries or feedback about the guide, please do not hesitate to email pdo@amsa.org.au.

OVERVIEW FOR
APPLYING RURAL
This section provides an overview of the options to apply for rural internships in
each state and territory of Australia. For specific information on the pathways and
rural internship availability, please refer to the respective state or territory section
of this guide or the services website.
Applications for the 2024 Queensland Rural Generalist Pathway (QRGP) opened
on March 7th 2023 and closed Tuesday 21st March 2023. However, there are rural
positions in the General Intern Recruitment application pathway:
If choosing an “undersubscribed” or “equal in numbers” first preference, you
will automatically be allocated
Otherwise, allocation will be as per the ballot process
If you have a connection to rural Queensland and commitment to practicing
rurally, you can provide documentation to support your application to a rural
hospital.
The QRGP offers graduating medical students the opportunity to explore a wide
variety of clinical training and develop the advanced, targeted skill set required to
support the health needs of rural communities. The pathway usually takes 5-6
years to complete.
AVAILABLE RURAL SITES
Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, Rockhampton, Bundaberg, Hervey Bay, Ipswich,
Toowoomba, Redcliffe, Caboolture, Sunshine Coast University Hospital, Redland,
and Mount Isa.
