The 2023 edition of the AMSA Internship Guide is now available to read! This is the AMSA guide for the 2024 clinical year. This guide could not have been possible without the contribution of medical students, hospital management teams, interns, AMA and many other people volunteering their time to update the information. For example, we have added eight new health networks across all states and territories to the internship guide. Good luck to the class of 2023! We hope that the information within this guide can be beneficial for you during your internship applications. If you have any queries or feedback about the guide, please do not hesitate to email pdo@amsa.org.au.

RURAL
HEALTH
CHAIR
Hello and above all, a massive congratulations on completing medical school!
Finishing the chapter titled “University” is a huge accomplishment, an
amalgamation of long lectures, 7am ward rounds for surgery, searching for
mnemonics to help with anatomy and countless more memories that have
ultimately led you to reading this guide.
As you begin your journey as a doctor, I hope that rural internship and rural
medicine is or will be something you consider! The rural space is a dynamic,
complex environment full of surprising wonders, a thriving and friendly
community, scenery brimming with waterfalls or coasts promising sunshine,
exciting community events, many small nooks and crannies bursting with life and
cafes rich with stories. Not to mention what is likely to be a short drive or relaxing
walk every day to work! Here, medicine expands as boundless opportunities arise to
really get involved with the team and patients, provide treatment on a holistic level
and do procedures in theatre.
Regardless of where you’re headed next, the rural health crisis and its impacts is
something you will likely face or hear about in your career so I think it is important
to recognise the role that we, as medical practitioners, can play in improving rural
health. Take a stop by the rural section of this guide for a comprehensive
understanding of the rural pathways available and learn about what rural medicine
can offer you!
Check out the AMSA Rural Health social media accounts (@amsarural on
Instagram and “AMSA Rural Health” on Facebook) to learn more about the
challenging but extremely rewarding experience of working rurally and find out
about upcoming rural bursaries and events.
Best of luck for everything! I am so excited for where medicine will take you and
may your internship year treat you well!
Always,
