The 2023 edition of the AMSA Internship Guide is now available to read! This is the AMSA guide for the 2024 clinical year. This guide could not have been possible without the contribution of medical students, hospital management teams, interns, AMA and many other people volunteering their time to update the information. For example, we have added eight new health networks across all states and territories to the internship guide. Good luck to the class of 2023! We hope that the information within this guide can be beneficial for you during your internship applications. If you have any queries or feedback about the guide, please do not hesitate to email pdo@amsa.org.au.

Ballarat Health Services is the major provider of hospital and healthcare services in
Western Victoria. Ballarat Health Services was formed in 1997 through the merger
of the Base Hospital (acute medical, surgical, obstetric, paediatric, critical care and
emergency services) Queen Elizabeth Centre (aged care, rehabilitation and
palliative care), and Grampians Psychiatric Services (acute, aged and community
psychiatric services). Ballarat Health Services provides services to a regional
population of 200,000 people. Ballarat Health Services is comprised of
approximately 370 acute beds (including 8 ICU/CCU beds, 23 ED beds, 3
We are large enough to deal with complex and high acuity patients. Interns
receive an intensive orientation program. Weekly intern training (paid and
protected time) takes place on a Thursday evening and is guided by the Australian
Curriculum Framework for Junior Doctors. All interns receive BLS training early.
HMO training is a combination of formal lectures (including regular grand round
presentations), bedside teaching, unit-specific teaching (M&M meetings, pathology
and radiology meetings, multidisciplinary meetings), and online resources and
guides. A mentoring program is also available to interested Interns.
Completing your Intern year at Ballarat Health Services will ensure that you
experience hands-on learning in a supportive and well-supervised environment.
