The 2023 edition of the AMSA Internship Guide is now available to read! This is the AMSA guide for the 2024 clinical year. This guide could not have been possible without the contribution of medical students, hospital management teams, interns, AMA and many other people volunteering their time to update the information. For example, we have added eight new health networks across all states and territories to the internship guide. Good luck to the class of 2023! We hope that the information within this guide can be beneficial for you during your internship applications. If you have any queries or feedback about the guide, please do not hesitate to email pdo@amsa.org.au.

MEDICAL INTERN PLACEMENT NUMBER
This is a nine digit number given to you by your medical school. This number is
generated by AHPRA but is not the same as your AHPRA number.
WORKING HOURS
For all states and territories across Australia, a standard week is 38 hours plus
overtime. Applicants need to review their state, territory and hospital’s regulations
and regarding overtime work. Generally, an intern can expect to work at least one
overtime shift per fortnight, if not once per week. These include evening shifts,
night shifts, and weekend shifts. Applicants should make themselves aware of any
sick relief shift requirements. A doctor on sick relief can be called at any time of
the day or night to work at short notice. This includes being called to step into a
night shift when an intern might need to forego sleep. Each state has a different
policy on ‘unrostered overtime.’ Applicants should further research their state and
hospital policies prior to beginning work. The AMA provides a good outline of
award conditions for each state.Visit their website here:
COUPLE APPLICATIONS
Some states do accept applications for couples or joint-applications. The details
can be found on the website of each state’s or territory’s application information
section.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS
Each state and territory has a different policy for special consideration. Special
consideration is generally reserved for applicants with extenuating circumstances
such as dependent children or a serious illness. Make sure to check their website
for additional details.
