The 2023 edition of the AMSA Internship Guide is now available to read! This is the AMSA guide for the 2024 clinical year. This guide could not have been possible without the contribution of medical students, hospital management teams, interns, AMA and many other people volunteering their time to update the information. For example, we have added eight new health networks across all states and territories to the internship guide. Good luck to the class of 2023! We hope that the information within this guide can be beneficial for you during your internship applications. If you have any queries or feedback about the guide, please do not hesitate to email pdo@amsa.org.au.

Dear future interns,
Welcome to the profession! I’m excited to get to know some of you, should you
chose to come and work in lovely lutruwita country. My name is Lou, and I am the
state representative on the AMA Council of Doctors in Training. I entered this role
to advocate for all junior doctors to safe, accessible, and sustainable workplaces.
Doctors can often find themselves feeling like they must commit more time and
energy to their work than they might be rostered to. Junior doctors are especially
vulnerable to working long hours above and beyond their roster in order to meet
the needs of their patients, teams, or hospitals.
My goal is to guide our health system away from the systems in place which
inadvertently lead to burnout and workplace fatigue. We know we are at our best
for ourselves and our patients when we have sustainable working conditions and
access to protected education, meal breaks, and reasonable expectations of when
our shifts will end.
Lutruwita is gorgeous country, and it should be enjoyed alongside a robust
work/life balance! I hope to see you here. There are trails to walk, oceans to swim,
and cider and cheese to delight.
See you soon
Lou
