The 2023 edition of the AMSA Internship Guide is now available to read! This is the AMSA guide for the 2024 clinical year. This guide could not have been possible without the contribution of medical students, hospital management teams, interns, AMA and many other people volunteering their time to update the information. For example, we have added eight new health networks across all states and territories to the internship guide. Good luck to the class of 2023! We hope that the information within this guide can be beneficial for you during your internship applications. If you have any queries or feedback about the guide, please do not hesitate to email pdo@amsa.org.au.

TAS NEW GRAD
PERSPECTIVE
Huge congratulations on making it this far through your studies!
Though I’m sure that, at times, it felt that your medical degree would never end, it
is now time to apply for internship, and you should take a moment to reflect on,
and be proud of how far you have come. If you are considering applying for
internship in Tasmania, I would strongly recommend it. I am just about to finish
my first rotation at the Royal Hobart Hospital, in Urology, and I have had a great
experience so far. Intern year is probably always going to be a significant
adjustment, but Tassie is a wonderful location to take this next step.
Time is precious in intern year, and Tasmania’s easy-to-access wilderness,
numerous great restaurants and cafes, and conveniently-located housing options
make it easy to spend your free time doing something that rejuvenates you,
rather than commuting. As well as this, you will find a friendly, approachable
community at any of the hospitals in Tasmania, so you can rely on some good-old
camaraderie to get you through the tricky days.
Tasmania has three major hospitals: the Royal Hobart Hospital, the Launceston
General Hospital, and the North West Regional Hospital. Each hospital provides a
different mix of experiences to suit your needs, with opportunities for rural and
remote medicine, independent learning opportunities, and variety of medical
specialties. Each provides a well supported internship, with plenty of teaching
time.
Applying for internship in Tasmania is easy – it requires only one application for all
three hospitals – you just indicate your preference of location when applying, and
send through your CV. Regardless of which hospital you are allocated to, you are
guaranteed to have a great year, make valuable connections, and have
worthwhile learning experiences that will set you up well into the future.
Finally, I just want to wish you all well for the coming year. This is undoubtedly a
period of significant change, regardless of whether you stay in your home state, or
are relocating, and it is almost definitely going to be a steep learning curve - but
rest assured that all the hard work you have put in up to this point will serve you
well. Remember that there are many wonderful people around willing to support
you – don’t be afraid to reach out, and lean on these supports over the next year.
Make a conscious effort to do things that fill your cup, as well as making sure you
eat, (drink water!), sleep, and exercise. These simple things will make all the
difference in ensuring you not only survive, but thrive in your intern year.
We look forward to having you as new interns in 2024!
