This guide could not have been possible without the contribution of medical students, hospital management teams, interns, AMA and many other people volunteering their time to update the information. For example, we have added eight new health networks across all states and territories to the internship guide. Good luck to the class of 2023! We hope that the information within this guide can be beneficial for you during your internship applications. If you have any queries or feedback about the guide, please do not hesitate to email pdo@amsa.org.au.

SA RURAL TRAINING
The Rural Intern Pathway was introduced in South Australia in 2018 to select
applicants who are suitable for and have a preference towards working in a rural
or remote location. All applicants who meet the intern application eligibility
criteria and preference a regional local health network (rLHN) as their first
preference will be included in the selection process. Therefore, applications for this
pathway are included in the standard SA internship application. South Australia
has three internship programs – specially designed, fit for purpose programs to
set up interns for a rural generalist career into the future. Rural Internship
Positions available in 2023:
Barossa Hills and Fleurieu Local Health Network (subject to accreditation)
Eyre and Far North Local Health Network (subject to accreditation)
Flinders and Upper North Local Health Network (in 2023, there were 5
internship positions available)
Limestone Coast Local Health Network (in 2023, there were 10 internship
positions available)
Riverland Mallee Coorong Local Health Network (In 2023, there were 7
internship positions available)
Applications for the Rural Intern Pathway are included in the standard South
Australian application for internship. The only difference is that they are allocated
first. To be eligible, applicants must:
Preference rural local health network (rLHN) as FIRST preference
Answer additional questions within the standard process (e.g. CV, referees and
SAQs)
The rural stream will then host interviews after applicants are reviewed by a
selection panel.
