The 2023 edition of the AMSA Internship Guide is now available to read! This is the AMSA guide for the 2024 clinical year. This guide could not have been possible without the contribution of medical students, hospital management teams, interns, AMA and many other people volunteering their time to update the information. For example, we have added eight new health networks across all states and territories to the internship guide. Good luck to the class of 2023! We hope that the information within this guide can be beneficial for you during your internship applications. If you have any queries or feedback about the guide, please do not hesitate to email pdo@amsa.org.au.

INFORMATION FOR APPLICANTS
WHAT IS AN INTERNSHIP?
An internship in Australia is the period where medical graduates undergo
supervised clinical training within an accredited hospital. For most medical
graduates, it is the first year of employment as a medical practitioner (PGY1).
The internship must be completed before a doctor can be generally registered
with the Medical Board of Australia. As an intern, they have provisional registration
with the Medical Board of Australia.
Notably, 2024 will see the introduction of the 2-year Prevocational Framework.
The 2-year prevocational framework is the nationwide standard for education and
training created by the Australian Medical Council (AMC) that covers PGY1 and
PGY2. The key of this framework is it requires health services to train and assess
doctors in PGY2 if you are not yet on a specialist training college training program.
Our 2022 AMSA Advocacy Officer Lauren Wright-Hill has created excellent
graphics breaking down what this 2-year Prevocational Framework entails,
including the structure of the year and training environment.
More information about this 2-year framework can be found at:
