This guide could not have been possible without the contribution of medical students, hospital management teams, interns, AMA and many other people volunteering their time to update the information. For example, we have added eight new health networks across all states and territories to the internship guide. Good luck to the class of 2023! BASIC INFORMATION<br />

Cairns is the second largest city outside of the south-east corner of the state<br />

and an extremely popular international tourist destination. Cairns is often<br />

referred to as ‘where the rainforest meets the reef’ and is an extremely popular<br />

tourist destination. In addition to being the gateway for the world heritage<br />

listed Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest, Cairns is also only a stone's<br />

throw away from beautiful Port Douglas, Mission Beach, the Tablelands and<br />

Cape Tribulation<br />

The Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service strives to provide<br />

excellence in health care, wellbeing, research and education in Far North<br />

Queensland. It provides an extensive range of health services at more than 30<br />

regional, rural and remote facilities across a geographical area of 142,900 square<br />

kilometres (roughly twice the size of Tasmania), ranging from Cairns to Tully in<br />

the south, Cow Bay in the north and Croydon in the west. To support<br />

Queensland Health’s Rural Generalist Pathway the CHHHS has been selected as<br />

a Rural Generalist Training Hospital<br />

Hospital services at this training site includes all major health specialties.<br />

Services delivered include surgery, trauma care, paediatrics, general and<br />

specialist medicine, intensive care, cardiology, mental health, outpatient,<br />

maternity and neonatal care, aged and dementia care, emergency medicine,<br />

environmental health, and general public health
