The Queensland Rural Generalist Pathway (QRGP) offers graduating medical<br />

students the opportunity to explore a wide variety of clinical training and develop<br />

the advanced skill set required to support the health needs of rural communities.<br />

Applications for the <strong>2023</strong> QRGP opened 9AM AEST March 7th <strong>2023</strong> and closed<br />

4PM AEST March 21st <strong>2023</strong><br />

During Intern and Junior House Officer (JHO) years, trainees will work in one of<br />

the dedicated training hospitals including Cairns, Townsville, Mackay,<br />

Rockhampton, Bundaberg, Hervey Bay, Ipswich, Toowoomba, Redcliffe,<br />

Caboolture, Sunshine Coast University Hospital, Redland, and Mount Isa.<br />

Selection into the pathway includes a written application and, if shortlisted, an<br />

interview where candidates need to demonstrate they are prepared for and<br />

motivated to live and work as rural generalists in a rural community. The pathway<br />

usually takes 5-6 years to complete and offers all trainees mentoring, support and<br />

career navigation for the duration.<br />

All of the hospitals for rural generalist students offer general internship places as<br />

well, open to all medical graduates. Preference for places is given as per the<br />

Category system for all QLD internships.<br />

QUEENSLAND HOSPITAL HEALTH CHECK SURVEY<br />

In 2022, AMA Queensland and its Council of Doctors in Training, in collaboration<br />

with ASMOFQ (Australian Salaried Medical Officers’ Federation Queensland),<br />

surveyed Resident Medical Officers (RMOs) throughout Queensland, including<br />

Interns, Junior House Officers, Senior House Officers and those on Continued<br />

Residency.<br />

The anonymous survey evaluated their experiences of employment in<br />

Queensland and subsequently compared hospitals across the state.<br />

Results were reported for a total of 719 junior doctors across 33 hospitals and<br />

Hospital and Health Services (HHSs).<br />

Professional/career development<br />

Pay and overtime<br />

Wellbeing and workplace culture<br />

Bullying, discrimination and harassment<br />
