Baltic porter
„Tallink Silja Ship’s brew”
Baltic Porter „Tallink Silja Ship’s brew“ 7,9% alc
vol is one fine example of our only regional beer
style brewed using six different malts, British and
German hops and fermented with British ale yeast.
In a aroma one could feel sweet raisins, cinnamon,
cognac and cardamom or according to tasters
nose sensitivity nutmeg or even a hint of anise. The
taste is dominated by toast, licorice, coffee and
molasses, but again all comes down to respective
beer enjoyers mouthfeel – some would feel sweetand
sourness, another clove and gingerbread, the
third all above, the fourt black dried plums.
Anyhow, baltic porter „Tallink Silja Ship’s brew“
suits well with porkroast, chocolate cake or aged
Gouda. Additionally it can be enjoyed after a meal
stand-alone as a dessert. If your stomach is after
buffet-meal so full, that you are basically rolling off
the chair, then one baltic porter is still enjoyable to
make your feast a whole.
Baltic porter’s roots are in 18. century London, where
it is claimed to be the favorite beer for working class
– hence the name as porters preferred this beer,
yet to be later known as porter. Industrialisation of
breweries, which started on the same century made
porter the first mass produced beer. The backbone
of all porters is roastiness, which they have more
than stouts. Some say, that the usual dispute, is
the beer porter or stout, can be easily ended by the
brewer: if the brewmaster brewed porter and calls
it a porter, then it is a porter! Õllenaut’s brewmaster
distiguishes stouts from porters by the fact, that
there is no roasted barley in the porter.
Baltic porter’s „Tallink Silja Ship’s brew “ history
extends to year 2014, when Õllenaut brewed this
beer for first time especially for Estonian Open Air
Museum. Beer turned out so good, that already next
year we launced this beer under our brand and in
2018 won Finnish ALKO tender for porters. In 2020
our baltic porter achived second place in Helsingin
Sanomat (Finnish major newspaper) blind tasting,
only to receive the same amount of stars as a porter
from Finnish brewery. Tallink chose Õllenaut’s
baltic porter as their ships’s brew in 2021 and in
2022 the same beer was announced Style Winner
- World’s Best Strong Porter in prestigious “World
Beer Awards” contest in London.
The Õllenaut brewery was established in 2013,
when it’s co-founder and head brewmaster Ilmar
Räni teamed up with three additional professionals
specialising in administration, finance, sales and
funding. Ilmar had returned a few years before
from USA, the cradle of the craft beer revolution,
only to find that none of his beloved beers were
available, so he spent the next years home- brewing
and studying the whole process thoroughly from
the first drop of water, single malt grain and hops
pellet to the last fermenter sample tap and bottle
cap. His self-studies included obviously also tons of
beer recipes, styles and brewing methods.
Õllenaut beers are like Nordic food – they are
simple tastes, made in a clear and best possible
way. Õllenaut beer selection has additionaly to the
best traditional baltic porter also red ale, IPAs and
we are the biggest craft lager, rye ale and saison
producer in the Baltics. We have also regionally
the best capability for brewing non-alcoholic beers
and they have won several awards last years incl
“World Beer Awards” 2022 Gold.
Beer is õlu in Estonian and naut means ‘to enjoy’,
so õllenaut is a person, who enjoys beer. Another
meaning of õllenaut is derived from ‘astronaut’ –
õllenaut seeks and tastes boldly new beers, that no
ordinary beer drinker has tasted before.
So, if you like good beer, then also YOU are ÕLLENAUT!
Alcohol may be harmful to your health!
