ARTISTS PROTEST ABORTION RIGHTS RESTRICTIONS
The overturning of Roe V Wade in June
of 2022 established what had been
suspected and expected that the Trump
right-wing court appointees along with
others already on the court would finally
accomplish what the ultra-conservative
right had been using as a divisional issue
since the Roe V. Wade decision in 1973.
Barbara Kruger a woman artist designed
a poster for the attempted abortion
restriction by the Republican Party in
1989. This has been resurrected as a
timely and pertinent reminder for now.
The decision to restrict the right of
women to no longer have the right to
control their own bodies has been taken
up by activists throughout the country
and women artists are no exception.
Women artists are foremost in reacting
with their art,
however, male
artists have
also been
active in the
cause.
With this
decision by the
Supreme
PEACE POLE TOO WOKE
FOR 29 PALMS?
By Tom Swann Hernandez
Founder and President
“Blessed are the peacemakers, For they
shall be called sons of God.”m Jesus
Christ
Tom,
I am sorry but do not see this is
compatible with our City Park. You can
come put up the pole.
Thanks
Frank J. Luckino, MPA, ICMA-CM
City Manager
If war had been abolished then Russiam
would never have invaded Ukraine
Poles are not compatible with their park
system. The decision was forwarded to
me by the City Manager this past Friday
morning.
In February Randy Schecher, Rick Tice
and I took the Peace Pole to 29 Palms
City Hall and met with the City Manager
and Community Development Director.
They seemed pleased and suggested
that we add two more languages to
the pole. The current pole says “May
Peace Prevail on Earth” in English,
Spanish, Hebrew and Arabic. The 29
Palms officials asked if we could add
the Tagalog language because of the
many Filipino residents in the city. They
also asked if we could add the local
indigenous language. We told them we
could get that done.
Veterans For Peace has dedicated
Peace Poles outside of the Cathedral
City Library, Desert Mirage High School
in Thermal, Saul Martinez Elementary
School in Mecca, Desert Hot Springs
High School, Shea’s Veteran Center in
Desert Hot Springs and Congressional
Cemetery in Washington D.C. VFP
donated money for the Peace Pole that
is located in a Palm Springs City Park.
Rev. Kevin Johnson led that effort.
We left the Peace Pole with the two city
leaders. The City Manager said he would
present the Peace Pole to the City Arts
Commission, the Parks Commission
and seek input from the local Marine
Corps Base. The City Manager told us
he did not think it was necessary for us
to testify before these city commissions.
He said we may want to testify when the
proposal is presented to the city council.
Apparently one of the commissions
None of these Peace Poles have rejected the pole. The City Manager did
been controversial. Approval was fast not offer any details about the decision.
and easy. Cathedral City refurbished I am left to speculate the reason behind
their Peace Pole and made it the their decision.
centerpiece for the remodeled front I believe that someone researched
entrance of their library. The City of 29 Veterans For Peace (VFP) and decided
Palms is the first agency to say Peace we are too progressive or woke for their
city. VFP’s primary mission is to abolish
wars and resolve conflicts peacefully. If
stopping wars is a message that is not
compatible in 29 Palms then it begs the
question if starting wars or glorifying war
is in fact compatible with the values of
29 Palms.
Some conservatives believe opposing
wars is a contradiction of the purpose
of the military. They believe that when
our military trains for warfare then the
soldiers are eager for war. This is false.
during that conflict was “Support the
Troops. Bring them Home”! We found no
weapons of mass destruction in Iraq but
thousands of Americans were killed and
wounded. Most Americans believe the
war was a mistake. VFP does not criticize
any person who served in our military
during that period and our chapter is
named in memory of Army soldier Jon
Castro who was killed in the Iraq War.
We have honored many Gold Star
Families. We seek the very best set of
benefits for our veterans.
Presidents Truman, Eisenhower,
Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter
and Reagan were all the commanderin-chief
during the Cold War with the
Soviet Union. President Kennedy showed
restraint during the 1962 Cuban Missile
Crisis. President Reagan used our military
as peacekeepers in Lebanon. During
the Cold War the Soviet Union shot
down a U-2 spy plane but the two super
powers never engaged in a war. During
that period the goal was for our military
to be so strong and well trained that
we were a deterrent to war. The Cold
War policy was called “peace through
strength”. We would be so strong that
the Soviet Union would not dare attack
us. During those years all of our soldiers
prayed for continued peace.
That all changed after 9/11. Even
though no one from Iraq was a terrorist
on 9/11, the United States invaded Iraq
which was the first time we started a war
with a country that had not attacked
us. VFP opposed that war and our motto Peace Pole.
12 DDG is always FREE ddg.gay. Available in print at select locations.
A vocal minority group believes if you
oppose a war then you are hurting the
morale of our troops. Our military has
to be dedicated in order to fight the
enemy. VFP has never protested our
soldiers. We have always protested
the policy makers, the law makers that
make the decision to engage in war.
When people are misguided and try
to glorify war we reveal the true cost
of war, the dead bodies, the injured
soldiers and civilians. We also reveal the
true cost of weapons like the Depleted
Uranium we dumped in Iraq that will
cause birth defects for 20 generations.
The simple truth is that most veterans
who have experienced the horrors of
war want peace. Most of the people
who support endless wars have never
served in combat.
We regret that 29 Palms rejected our
proposal. There are no hard feelings. We
will not appeal this decision to the City
Council. We will find a new home for this

VIRTUAL GALLERY
The gallery work for this issue is another male nude in a Mondrian-like painting.
This hunky model is actually a composite of 3 different photos of models I have worked with over
the past years. The main body is a model named Leon, whose body provides the major portion
of the pose. The raised arms are from another model with just an upper back shot with the arms
raised. And the tilted head looking upward is another. The total composition is aimed at the
contrasting of Mondrian’s minimalist technique of using divided geometric areas filled with only
the three primary colors: and the softer more representational male figure interjected into the
design. Title, LEANING ON MONDRIAN
Court, a few conservative-leaning states
have exacerbated the issue by passing
even more extreme laws that restrict
female reproductive rights and are also
hinting at restricting birth control options
that affect both male and female rights.
These extreme interpretations of the
new Roe V. Wade restrictions have
caused even art galleries and mostly
public educational institutions to waver
from and restrict artistic depictions
that appear to favor abortion rights.
One appalling example was at the
University of Idaho where the University
administration put out a memo that
stated...”remain neutral over abortion
and “proceed cautiously at any time
that a discussion moves in the direction
of reproductive health”. A mobile
billboard providing information on how
to obtain abortion pills was ordered
by the Boise police to leave the city.
President Joe Biden even reacted after
hearing this news saying, “Folks” what
century are we in?”
individual human rights. One example
is the removal of Tucker Carlson from
Fox News after a legal challenge from
a voting machine company caused
Fox to be responsible for a considerable
payout for irresponsible broadcasting.
Jenny Holzer an installation artist used
a screenshot from a Fox Tucker Carlson
show. The caption line under the Tucker
Carlson discussion reads “MAKING
AN INFORMED CHOICE REGARDING
YOUR OWN BODY SHOULDN’T BE
CONTROVERSIAL” This discussion was
actually about immunization, but the
caption fits exactly with abortion rights
which Fox and Carlson was against.
Continued tyranny exerted by the
right-wing faction of the Supreme
Court on the rights of citizens of this
country along with other media outlets
and supremacist organizations should
continue to be aggressively challenged
by all citizens including artists who use
their creative abilities to help preserve
democracy and human rights.
Recent court decisions have put light
on the restrictive elements removing
