Creates Stunning Custom 

Home on a Challenging Lot

Kirk Figueira and Serena Scheuchzer had 

searched high and low for a lot on which to 

build their new home, and in 2021 they finally 

found what they were looking for in the town of 

Haliburton. 

“The vacant half-acre lot had a double slope that made 

it challenging to build on, being lower at the back 

and higher at the front, but we knew that our team at 

Discovery Dream Homes could tackle it,” says Kirk. 

“The neighbours were very surprised at the end result 

and commented how appreciative they are to have a 

home like ours in their neighbourhood!” 

The bright main level has a sloped 14 ft. pine tongueand-groove 

ceiling and dual-pane low E argon gas 

windows that let in lots of sunshine. Also on the 

main floor are an open concept living space, primary 

bedroom, ensuite, walk-in closet, and laundry room. 

On the lower level are two bedrooms, a gym, an office, 

a flex room and a three-piece bathroom for guests. 

The Sunspace screened-in three season room at the 

side provides lake views and protection from the 

weather, with warmth from a masonry stone, woodburning 

fireplace on one side and the other side has a 

masonry stone propane fireplace in the great room. 

The couple, who are both Design and Consulting 

Associates at Discovery Dream Homes, had a vision 

of a modern timberframe home with a walk-out lower 

level. After helping clients for 15 years bringing their 

own visions to life with Discovery, Kirk and Serena 

knew what would work well in the home. He and 

Serena co-managed the project, with Kirk handling the 

site preparation including the exterior and Serena all 

the interiors. 

This custom-designed modern year-round home has 

similar features to other homes that Kirk has projectmanaged, 

with 1,900 sq. ft on the main floor, plus a 

two-car garage and 1,900 sq. ft on the lower level. 

The siding is finished in Cape Cod maintenance-free 

exterior siding and painted in a Benjamin Moore grey, 

with a wood-stained timberframe front and back sitting 

atop an ICF foundation. 

With all Discovery projects, the client can use 

Discovery certified builders, or can arrange for their 

own contractor. In this case, Kirk and Serena went with 

Highland Lakes Construction, with whom they were 

very happy. 

Discovery is known for its energy-efficient homes 

and this home is no exception. The structure has 

high-efficiency propane forced air heating with air 

conditioning, also in-floor radiant heating in the lower 

level, which Kirk says is so warm that it heats most of 

the house on its own. Blown-in spray foam insulation 

in the walls and ceiling makes for a well-sealed, airtight 

four-season home. 

“Now Serena and I know how our clients feel when 

we’ve finished homes for them,” says Kirk. “We 

have the first-hand experience of how wonderful a

Cheryl and Mark have recently taken over Mark’s 

family’s cottage on Buckhorn Lake that had 

been in the family for over 50 years. They 

were looking to make some updates to make it more 

accommodating for family gatherings. 

The couple had originally seen the work of Angela 

Jones, owner of Lakeshore Designs, in the Princess 

Margaret Dream Cottage she designed on Buckhorn 

Lake, and they were inspired to check out the projects 

on her website and on the Houzz app. They liked what 

they saw. Plus, she had just finished a design of their 

bunkie/boathouse (featured in the last issue of the 

Kawartha Cottage magazine).

and soft blue palette with colour accents.” 

The whole main floor, three bedrooms, and sunroom 

were refreshed with all new furniture, bedding, 

artwork, wall and window coverings. The kitchen 

cabinets were refaced and repainted and shiplap was 

installed on a feature wall. 

To make the space more amenable for entertaining, 

Angela suggested a large, modern harvest table and 

accent chairs. Seating in the sitting room was expanded 

with two identical couches and two chairs bookending 

the re-clad stone fireplace, all with views to the lake. 

“The year-round cottage was built in 1971, originally 

being 800 sq. ft. with a walk-out basement. It 

underwent two renovations, the first one was 30 years 

ago and the second one was 20 years ago,” says Mark. 

“The interior décor was popular in the 1990s.” 

“I did a walk-through with the family and made a plan 

to upgrade the interior to maximize the use of space 

by taking out some built-in cabinetry, brightening the 

cottage with white linen draperies, applying some 

fresh paint and adding shiplap,” says Angela. “My 

vision for this dated cottage was to transform it into a

Jayne’s Luxury Rentals offers cottage, estate home, 

chalet and farm vacation rentals in Muskoka,

Jayne McCaw got the idea for her company when she 

travelled to Provence in France and found a woman 

named Beverly who represented 10 properties in the

the rental home and arranged for a chef to cook for us 

during our vacation,” says Jayne. “When I returned to 

Ontario, I decided I would be the ‘Beverly’ here.” 

She rented out her own cottage for a month to friends 

back in 2011. 

“Those friends were so happy with it, and they had 

other friends who said, ‘Do you think you could find 

us a cottage?’ ” she continues. “So I found them a 

cottage on Lake Rosseau, and my business grew from 

there.” An added motivation was that Jayne wanted to 

leave the Toronto tech world to spend more time at her 

Muskoka cottage. 

Hosting 

Jayne is now expanding to the Kawartha region and 

is looking for luxury properties to rent to her growing 

guest list. 

“There are lots of beautiful properties in the Kawarthas 

and we’re happy to consider your property,” she says. 

Generally, an inquiry starts with a phone call, then 

answering a questionnaire, followed by an on-site visit. 

Cottage owners must provide a minimum of two weeks 

to Jayne, which can be any two weeks of the summer, 

depending on their desire. Above and beyond that, 

Jayne will rent properties out for month-long stays or 

the duration of the summer. Guests have a one-week 

minimum booking requirement, which along with 

the higher price tags, prevents attracting the “party 

crowds.” 

“We provide linens and towels, and ask that owners 

take away any personal items, especially in the primary 

bedroom,” she says. 

She stresses that owners can relax knowing that their 

property will be cared for by a team of professional 

property services personnel. Each cottage is assigned a 

property manager who takes care of the cottage while 

the guests are there. 




“We take care of the entire booking process from 

inquiry to signed rental agreement, informing you of 

all important details along the way,” she says. “You 

can feel confident knowing that we have developed 

thorough standards and practices to properly screen 

guests and protect you from risks.”

Boaters in the Kawarthas know Young’s Point 

Marina as an idyllic spot located at the 

entrance to Clear Lake, just upstream from 

Lock 27 on the world-famous Trent-Severn Waterway. 

This family-owned business is operated by Jason 

Paris, along with his wife Donna, their son Jordan, 

and a crew of friendly, knowledgeable staff. Over the 

26 years Jason has owned the business, it has grown 

steadily. They now have 35 dock slips and service 

about 500 boats per season. 

Their fully licensed and registered staff mechanic 

can service and repair all types of marine engines 

including Sea-Doo watercrafts and other PWCs. They 

do insurance repairs, propeller rebuilding, boat 

cleaning and repairs. They have boat winterization 

and storage for 300 boats, boat pickup and delivery 

up to 6,000 lbs., and a concrete launch for boats up 

to 40 ft. long. They now have a hydraulic trailer and 

can accommodate larger boats up to 38 feet long for 

winterizing and storage or maintenance. 

Young’s Point Marina is well-known in the area for 

the quality and craftsmanship of their custom-built 

docks. They are the authorized dealer for docks from 

Naylor Systems, based in Cameron, Ontario near 

Fenelon Falls. 

“Our family has had a long relationship with the 

Naylor family, with each generation being friends,” 

says Jason Paris. “We’ve sold their docks for 47 years. 

They produce the broadest range of marine equipment 

to keep your boat safe and clean and manufacture the 

most advanced docks, marine railways and boat lifts on 

the market today. We do custom installs of their docks.” 

Some of the docking options they offer include:

bumper that PWC owners love); floating docks; tower, 

or cantilevered docks; wheel-n-dock; hydraulic boat lifts;

Jason says that boating activity has increased on the 

Trent-Severn Waterway and expects this coming summer 

to be the same. “Interest in boating is on the rise – it’s a 

great activity to get people outside on the water,” he says.

Did you know that a natural shoreline doesn’t 

have to be unruly or difficult to design and 

maintain? 

the area that supports the most wildlife; both aquatic 

and terrestrial species congregate in this zone and 

benefit from increase biodiversity here. Also removing 

any barriers such as rock walls and Gabion baskets, 

which offer sub-par erosion control to natural roots 

and soils is fundamental. 

Ontario has an incredible amount of flowering shrubs 

and herbs that can provide a show of colour in every 

season. Our native plants are another country’s exotics 

and vice versa. Ontario has a lot to offer even the most 

discerning tastes. From wild roses, honeysuckles, to 

milkweeds, native daisies, and also iris. We also have 

dogwoods that dance in subtle angles in the wind, as 

well as many berry-bearing plants to entice and satiate 

our native songbirds. Native plants can remove excess 

nutrients, and they provide support for our native 

wildlife, from pollinators to birds, even amphibians and 

moose. Making the change to re-wild your shore is not 

only beneficial for our wildlife, but it is also easier than 

you may think. 

In fact, native plants are more resilient to weather 

changes and need less tending, watering or feeing than 

ornamental gardens that contain plants from another 

sphere entirely! Also, native plants can take a beating; 

they can be pruned and shaped without too much 

hassle or complaint. 

How to start? The best place to start, and the most 

important too, is right at the shore- the area where 

land meets water, also known as the riparian zone, is

grasses and groundcovers that can overtake everything 

and reduce biodiversity and function entirely. 

Connecting your native gardens to existing natural 

areas is also important for wildlife to use as safe 

corridors. Each step towards naturalization is rewarded 

by songs of returning wildlife.

The Story of Bill the Oak Tree 

I’ve spent my entire life in the Kawarthas, watching 

farmers tend their land, children explore nature, 

and wildlife thrive. Have you ever stood by the 

water and listened to the calls of the loons, watched 

as a bird creates her nest, or witnessed the blanket of 

stars that covers the mid-summer sky? It’s a take-yourbreath-away 

feeling that’s unlike any other. 

I have dedicated my life to providing food and shelter 

for wildlife and giving back to the people who own the 

property on which I live. It was a pleasure to watch 

the generations of this family grow, thrive, and take 

care of this land. I’m not the best with emotions, but I 

do know the feeling these people had for the land was 

something called “love.” 

Which is why it was heartbreaking to hear the 

conversations of what might happen to the property 

once the third-generation owners were ready to move 

on. I had watched these children grow into adults, 

work together to tend the land, and actively protect 

this habitat for all my animal friends. 

would I be able to continue my life here? What would 

happen to me? 

I remember the day a team of people with clipboards 

and hiking boots came by. It was hard to tell if they 

were the new owners or developers, but as they got 

closer, I could hear their conversation about how they 

were planning to protect the land. 

Their hats bore an image of me on them and read 

Kawartha Land Trust. These people were talking 

about how the owners had donated the property to 

save it from other purchasers who might take away the 

natural features of the land. 

I was saved. My friends and I could continue to live 

our lives and flourish in the only place we have ever 

called home. My life was not over at 72 years old. 

Because of this donation, this land I love will be 

protected. This selfless gift has saved my life.

While boating, it’s important to be prepared, carry 

a spare propeller, safety gear, tools, and more. Art 

Guest from O.P.S. (Only Propeller Service) says it’s 

also important to inform people about problems with 

ethanol fuels, and the benefits of yearly service and 

proper storage. 

“As many people are aware, there are problems with 

ethanol fuels, regarding their storage and their use in 

recreational vehicles,” he says. “We are seeing more and 

more problems with water in fuel, water being a biproduct 

of phase separation, which can occur in ethanol 

fuels when they are not being used up regularly.” 

He says that if gas is sitting in your tank for periods of 

time not being used, water begins to appear in your 

fuel and fuel system. After longer periods of time, 

eventually even acids are being produced, attacking 

your carburetor and internal fuel systems. Staff at O.P.S. 

have seen aluminum carburetors destroyed from this 

chemical reaction. 

“We are advising all of our customers to use non-ethanol 

fuel or premium fuel, now available as recreational gas 

from some suppliers. We also are recommending the use 

of ethanol stabilizer, which we carry,” he says. 

To properly maintain your recreational vehicle, he 

recommends that a licensed mechanic and/or facility put 

your vehicle to bed for the season by: 

1) Proper fuel stabilization 

2) Oil changes, both engine and gear case (this is cheap 

insurance), and 

3) Proper covering (prevents interior damage of your 

recreation vehicle) 

He also recommends that a proper facility “wake it up” 

for the next season. These few things can save you a lot 

of lost time enjoying your vacation or weekend. 

He says that customers can save a lot of time and 

unwanted expense when they purchase a “new-to-you” 

boat, snowmobile or outboard motor. 

“Don’t just jump in and drive,” he says. “It’s best to 

have a competent shop check it over before irrevocable 

damage is done. Old gas, poor maintenance or no 

maintenance can make your nice purchase just another 

piece of junk.”

A Fun Adventure 

Located at the beautiful Ganaraska Forest on the Oak 

Ridges Moraine, the Treetop Trekking zip line and 

aerial game park has activities designed for everyone 

from aged nine to eighty-nine years of age. 

The zip line and aerial course tours are made up of 

exciting games and obstacles high in the trees, and 

include suspended bridges, Tarzan swings, balance 

logs, cable traverses and zip lines. There are six 

different aerial climbs ranging from beginner to 

advanced. Participants wear a safety helmet and a rockclimbing 

style harness that is always connected to a

LANG PIONEER VILLAGE MUSEUM 

Once Upon a Time...Two Centuries Ago 

Those words often mark the start of a fanciful tale 

of a dream world. But what if they were the start 

of a story that seems so unlike today that it is 

hard to imagine it to be true, but it is? 

Once upon a time, more than two centuries ago, 

Peterborough County truly was a whole different place. 

There were no cars or electricity. Clothing was all 

handmade, often hand spun and dyed first. The only 

way to communicate with friends and relatives from 

away was through hand-written letters or making a 

long journey to visit in person. To purchase something 

from the store you would make a trade with goods 

like eggs or butter. It was unlike the world of the 21st 

century in many ways. 

At Lang Pioneer Village Museum, you can relive history 

and experience once upon a time for yourself. The 

25-acre site is host to over 30 historic buildings and 

recreates a 19th century hamlet. Costumed interpreters 

introduce you to the people, trades and events that 

have helped shape local history as you visit homes and 

businesses from 1800 to 1910. 

At Aabnaabin Camp, discover the history and culture 

of the Michi Saagiig Anishnaabeg who first occupied 

the land and were impacted by settlement. Watch the 

tinsmith and blacksmith at work, smell cookies or 

biscuits baking in a woodstove, watch as wool is spun 

on a spinning wheel, or even carry water using a yoke 

and bucket yourself. 

Step back in time and enjoy an entertaining and 

educational day of exploration in the 1800s this 

summer at Lang Pioneer Village Museum. The Museum 

is open from 10 am to 4 pm Wednesday through 

Sunday from Father’s Day to Labour Day. 

Lang Pioneer Village Museum also offers a variety of 

special events throughout the summer and fall. The 

Museum’s event season kicks off on June 18 with the 

26th Annual Father’s Day Smoke & Steam Show. Treat 

dad to a Father’s Day filled with antique tractors and 

steam engines for a day the whole family will enjoy! 

On July 9, the historic village will be filled with antique 

and classic cars and vintage motorcycles for the 26th 

Annual Transportation Day Car & Motorcycle Show. 

You can experience the charm of the village after dark 

with Village by Lantern Light on August 12. Making a 

return this year, kick off the start of the harvest season 

with some fresh fire-cooked corn during Corn Roast 

on August 27. The harvest celebration continues with 

the Museum’s most popular event, Applefest, taking

Halloween with Historic All Hallows’ Eve on October 

27 & 28.
