4.1 Boat Concept

The concept applied to this development was inspired from the forms and textures

of the traditional dhow. The structure of the boat hull was used as inspiration as an

inverted shell with perforations for shading canopies.

Structural

Ribs (steel)

The development proposes a user driven experience & incorporates the scale/

proportions of dhows into the journey. The use and scale of wooden textures and planks,

establishes a strong relationship with the user & the traditional dhow.

Structural Stratergy:

The dhow structure was studied to establish primary and secondary structural systems.

The ribs that give the hull its shape, are to be of steel. The hull itself is constructed

with GRC. Fiber cement boards with finish to suit, will be applied to imitate planks of

wood. The shading canopy will be constructed with fiber cement boards and be part

of the primary ‘steel’ rib system. Steel ribs are to be clad with Timber. The Floor of the

restaurant will be partially elevated and plant room will be structurally isolated

4.2 Boat Typology & MEP Strategy

For the user experience, it is important to maintain consistency throughout the entire

development. As such, key design elements like wooden planks, steel ribs & sails were

kept as constants in all the units.

Whilst the individual units need to create a unique sense of identity and be responsive

to their function, they also need to coherently look as though. they are all part of one

‘family’. The image to the left illustrates a few similarities mentioned above, in each unit.

The restaurants are proposed to have an MEP zone underneath the structural slab of

the ground floor. This zone, will house water tanks, AC units with vertical feeds, etc. The

kitchen block will have a dedicated extract on the roof hull as illustrated in the image

below. The back of house area will also have a dedicated access for external service and

garbage refuse.
