Vallencia’s
Mother’s
Day spoils
Vallencia Magwaza, one of the
friendly Liquor Specialists from
TOPS at Lifestyle, shares her top
three Mother’s Day picks to spoil
Mom with this month. TOPS at
Lifestyle also has a great range of
choccies, treats and gifts to pick
up with your wine or liquor.
Baglietti Prosecco No. 10 has a
large scent and an elegant dry taste
of pears, citrus and almonds. By
allowing the wine to rest on yeast
over time, a particularly dry and full
flavour is able to evolve. Only
grapes from the Piave
area in Italy, Bagliettie’s
most qualitative area, are
used in No. 10 Prosecco.
The perfect way to raise a
toast to a deserving
mom!
Musgrave Pink is a delightful rose gin made with 12 rare
botanicals. Spicy, warm cardamom and juniper share the
first taste to the palate and are supported by distinctive
notes of African ginger and grains of paradise. The spices
marry perfectly to give a smooth and fragrant finish. Pop
a gorgeous big glass of gin on a pretty tray with a sprig or
bunch of flowers and let Mom sip on it with her feet up
this Mother’s Day.
It all began in the mysterious souks of
Marrakesh as Sally Williams, a renowned chef,
embarked on a quest to create exceptional
nougat. Her secret formula has resulted in
what is widely considered the finest honey
nougat in the world. Now, Sally Williams and
Monteer Fine Liqueurs proudly present the
most delectable cream liqueurs imaginable - a
heavenly blend of nougat cream with honey,
nuts and a splash of cognac.

Romance between the pages ... and a flirty rosé
When Belle’s quiet, idyllic life on the
coast starts to crumble, it’s a stranger
provides a shoulder to cry on. And so,
when she’s sent a beautiful gift with
a note signed off ‘P.S. Come to Italy!’
she decides to follow her heart. A
palazzo in beautiful Puglia, flashy cars, a
glamorous, albeit warring family ... the
Italian break wasn’t about falling in love.
But under the sun-kissed olive trees,
anything can happen. Nicky Pellegrino’s
a fabulous author, and P.S. Come to
An office quiz night with an
all-expenses-paid trip to
colleagues who share a
desk but drive each other
to distraction. A prize that
needs to be shared. Not ideal
... but maybe the holiday
from hell could turn out to
be the vacation dreams are
made of. What Happens
This pale, coral pink dry Steenberg Ruby Rosé delivers subtle fragrances
of strawberry sherbet, blueberry coulis, rose petal, watermelon and fresh
perfect drink for all happy occasions ... and what’s happier than book club
We. Are. Obsessed. Realistic petals,
leaves and stems inspired by roses,
snapdragons, poppies, daisies ... this
which are made from a plant-based
plastic, produced using sustainably
sourced sugarcane - include
adjustable stems and petals that
are positionable, so you can design
different arrangements to suit different
arrangement ... it’s hours of fabulous creative
fun. Part of the LEGO Botanical Collection for adults,
the kit costs R999 from greatyellowbrick.co.za, and it’s
right at the top of our wish list this May.
We’re going to be honest. We like our wine. But that’s not to say we don’t like to be
considerate with our intake. So we’re massive fans of drinking light. We’re also suckers
for pretty packaging. So this Robertson range is ticking all the right boxes. Full of flavour
(you may be trading calories and alcohol content, but you aren’t trading taste), the
Robertson Winery Cultivar Light range has a bright, floral packaging and includes a
Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinotage Rosé and Merlot. You’ll find it at your local wine
store for between R65 and R75 a bottle, so really light on your pocket, too. Pop over to
Sundowners just got fancy
It’s pronounced lee-LAY. It’s not
new - it was created by brothers Paul
and Raymond Lillet in the village of
Pondesac, in the heart of France’s
famous wine-making Bordeaux
region, in 1872. It’s low in sugar and
alcohol. And it’ll make you go ooh la
la! Launched in SA last month, this
French wine-based aperitif is a brilliant
rose colour and is all berries, orange
blossom and grapefruit. You can drink
it straight up on its own as a chilled
aperitif – a drink to open the stomach
before a meal – as the French prefer
to do. Or try it in a signature Lillet Rosé
Tonic cocktail ... pour 50ml Lillet Rosé
and 100ml of tonic water over ice in a
tall wine glass, garnish with a wedge
of lime, or with a slice of grapefruit
and a sprig of thyme. C’est délicieux!
Past and current staff members of
The North Coast Courier newspaper
came together for
an intimate celebration in Sheffield
who recently retired after starting the
business more than 38 years ago.
Power mom
Although it sometimes requires a lot of juggling, Ballito business owner and mother of
four, Bonita Cherry, is living proof that women can successfully do both.
Text: Leah Shone Makeup: Kylie P Makeup Photos: Chris Allan Photo
“I never saw myself as a career
woman. I always only ever wanted
to be a mom and preach the gospel,”
laughs petite Bonita, seated in the
chic boardroom of her Ballito-based
marketing and e-commerce agency.
“But I fell in love with this business,
and brand development, because it
allows me to breathe destiny into the
lives of people.”
Bonita and her husband Dylan, who
have been married since they were 21
and 31 respectively, are the founders
and co-owners of Outlook Orange - a
creative business development agency
that aims to build meaningful brands.
The couple moved to Ballito from
Kloof just under five years ago and
have four children - Mila (11), Sam (9),
Layah (7) and little Anna, who is 14
months old.
One would never say, seeing her in
her work environment, that this stylish
no-nonsense company director has
four children at home, let alone one
under the age of two. But, as one of
five children herself, it was almost
inevitable that Bonita, who is very
close to her siblings and parents,
would one day have a large family of
her own.
Having once suffered from
debilitating asthma, Bonita says she
experienced God in a real way at a
very young age, after being healed
instantly. “It was a pivotal moment for
me and I knew I wanted to serve Him
from then on.”
After school, Bonita started a BA in
English and psychology at UKZN, but
became frustrated trying to balance
work and studying, as she was paying
for her own tertiary education. She
transferred to UNISA in her second
year to manage her time and make
more money. “I was working three
jobs. I would wake up early and study
from 3am so I had the rest of the day
to work.”
When Bonita met her husband
Dylan, who worked in design and
trend forecasting at a top advertising
agency, she knew he was the one she
wanted to spend her life with.
I absolutely love
what we do and
the process we go
through to build
a brand.
“I prayed for a husband who would
allow me to be exactly who I was
called to be, and Dylan is that. He has
never stopped me, although there
are times when he does have to reel
me in,” she laughs, “but he has always
supported me and his patience and
calm balance me.”
After working in sales for a few years
Bonita realised it wasn’t for her and
she wanted to pursue a career that
would enable her to be creative. Her
first taste of brand development
came when she started doing the
marketing for a five-star game lodge
called Nambiti Hills.
When Dylan left his job to start Outlook
Orange in 2009, Bonita joined the
company a year later. “I absolutely love
what we do and the process we go
through to build a brand. We unpack
the meaning and purpose of the brand,
look at its values and marry that with
their meaningful vision for impact.”
When an amazing job opportunity
came up for Dylan, a talented digital
marketing specialist, with Mr Price
in 2011, Bonita took over running
Outlook Orange on her own. Over the
next 10 years things changed vastly
and the business continued to grow.
The couple had two more children
and they moved their offices from
Kloof to Ballito just a few months
before the Covid pandemic hit. “We
always dreamed of living on the North
Coast and this really was the best
decision we’ve made.”
When the pandemic lifted, Bonita says
the business just grew and grew and,
since Dylan re-joined the business a
year ago, it has doubled. “We are now
a team of 12 and are so happy. Moving
here was a bold step, but definitely the
right one. Our staff are incredible and
we really are like a family.”
Juggling her family and business is
challenging, but Bonita makes things
work with the help of an au pair a few
days a week, a home helper and her
very hands-on, dedicated husband.
“I want other moms to know that no
matter how hard it gets juggling kids
and business, they shouldn’t ‘throw
in the towel’. It just makes too much
dirty laundry! Pursue your dreams
and make it happen. Get the help you
need and trust God.”
A shining light
They say that out of the darkness comes light.
This certainly has been the case for Umhlanga
It was about eighteen months ago that Praneetha's eyes were
when the riots and floods happened, I realised there were people
starving just a few kilometres from my home and I could no longer
continue with my eyes closed.”
What started out as a gesture to feed the neighbourhood watch
team, who were doing patrols during the riots, evolved into
the creation of a volunteer-led community kitchen to feed the
hungry, and then a fully-fledged non-profit company
(NPC) called the Umhlanga Women's Association.
Now, just a year-and-a-half later, chairperson
Praneetha, her executive committee and more
than 1000 members of the association are helping
hundreds of desperate women and families
on the North Coast every day, in a number of
different ways.
With a background in marketing, broadcasting
and public relations, Praneetha is the co-founder
and partner at leading South African digital
agency, Carver Media. She is also the CEO of
two other companies, Audience Networks and
Swiitch Agency. She is a dedicated mom of two
sons, and wife to husband Avilash, who she
has been married to for 27 years.
“It all began during the riots in July 2021,”
she says. “It was still in the peak of Covid and
we were making food for the patrolmen.
We were then approached by people from
neighbouring communities who were starving
and needed food. We wanted to help but
weren't sure how. With no bank account yet, we
didn't want to take money, so we asked people
to donate groceries so we could compile and
distribute hampers.”
It didn't take long before Praneetha and the
volunteers to realise that the grocery hampers
weren't the best solution. “We quickly realised we
had to change our approach because the people
didn't have electricity, so they were selling the
14 Get It • Ballito • Umdloti • Umhlanga May 2023

groceries for paraffin. Also, the people who really needed
the food – the frail, elderly, single mothers and childheaded
households - didn't have transport to collect it.
We decided we had to take already cooked food directly
to them.”
Working out of a makeshift community kitchen in a
temple in Umhlanga, Praneetha says women of all
different races, religions and backgrounds came together
to prepare the food. “It was incredible. The women would
sing while we cooked, it felt like we were in a war. I didn't
even know the names of many of the women I was
working with.”
They worked closely with the ratepayer’s association and
community policing forum to ensure the people who
needed it most were getting the meals and, on 9 August
(Women's Day) 2021, Praneetha officially registered the
Umhlanga Women's Association as an NPC.
“Although it isn't a business, I soon realised I had to
structure and run the association like one, with an
executive committee, to ensure we meet the needs of
the community.”
When the floods hit, the team sprang into action again,
this time making up to 500 meals a day. The premises
they were working out of became too small and, a year
later on their first anniversary, after massive fundraising
drives and incredible generosity from local business
people, the association opened its own community
kitchen working out of a park home at the Saxony
Shopping Centre in Umhlanga.
While the association started off as a community outreach
initiative to feed the hungry, it has since evolved and
grown to meet a number of different needs for women
in the area. “We have different areas where women can
help other women. This could be assisting them with legal
advice, imparting skills and training to help them generate
an income, donating pre-loved clothing or sanitary
pads for young girls who are missing school during their
menstruation, or donating money.”
The association's most recent development has been the
launch of their gender-based violence and mental health
awareness campaign. “Unlike our other programmes,
this isn't only for underprivileged women. This is for the
women suffering in silence in our own communities,
our neighbours.”
The recently-launched campaign involves creating
awareness and educating people around GBV and
mental health issues, which Praneetha says so often go
hand-in-hand.
“This has already been such an incredible journey but
we still have so far to go. We have the most amazing
committee and members, and I could never have done
any of this without them, or without the help of God and
my incredible family and husband. They are at the centre
of my life.”
Brand new (winter) skin
Our warm North Coast climate and long sunny days mean we have to hold off on
certain facial treatments until the cooler months arrive. We recently tried out the
Limelight treatment at The Good Skin Co, which is ideally suited for winter months.
If your skin is damaged from the sun, or you have unwanted
pigmentation (such as freckles, blotchiness, redness and
rosacea), then the Limelight treatment might be just what
you're looking for.
A laser treatment where the laser is attracted to either
melanocytes (pigment cells) or red blood cells on the
skin, Limelight is highly effective and, according to The
Good Skin co-owner Michelle Blom, considered the
'gold standard' treatment for sun damage and post
inflammatory pigmentation.
The process consists of two treatments which can be done
annually (preferably in winter) and is very quick and just
slightly uncomfortable.
After preparing your skin with a gel, therapist Tammy
Stanhopes uses the Cutera Laser to perform the procedure.
(The Cutera Laser is a customisable, multi-application
laser and light-based device used to treat a wide range of
nonsurgical aesthetic concerns).
The actual treatment lasts just a few minutes and involves
a series of blasts or 'shots' of laser to the specific areas you
want targeted. Afterwards, Tammy applies ice packs to your
skin to cool the areas, and the hot, burning sensations lasts
for about an hour afterwards.
After the treatment, you will experience darkening of the
pigmentation and redness, which lasts for about four to five
days. Make sure you have some good quality foundation to
apply to cover up if you’re going to be out and about and
don’t forget your sunscreen (even in the cooler months). As
the skin sheds, the pigment starts to peel off, leaving you
with beautiful new skin underneath.
The Good Skin Co.
Dr Michelle is passionate about aesthetic medicine and
she and her therapist Tammy are highly qualified and
experienced in their field. Aesthetic medicine has been Dr
Michelle's focus for the past seven years and she recently
opened a beautiful new aesthetic clinic, The Good Skin Co,
at the La Lucia Mall.
hardworking mamas!
moms? Balance. It’s something I still haven’t quite
managed to get under control and honestly, it’s a
juggle! And guilt … I feel I’m either letting down
challenge to me (IYKYK)! Generally though, the struggle lies
in wanting to be everything for everyone.
Things you can’t live without? My sons ‘day naps’ (won’t be
things. Some days work takes preference, some days kids
EAT
Good + Simple = Delicious healthy meals
“I hope that many of these recipes will become family favourites, the kind that
create a sense of belonging and are shared at your family tables for generations
to come.” Sarah Graham’s Good + Simple is, quite simply, a magnificent
celebration of vegetables and natural, whole foods. Dishes that are simple to
make, wholesome to eat and massively enjoyable. Kicking off with a baker’s
dozen tips on how to make the most of the book, and of meal times, she adds
hints about including additional protein, and keys for helping you keep track
of dishes that are vegan-friendly, gluten- and diary-free, for one pot dishes or
those that take half an hour or less to make or use just five ingredients. So it’s
user friendly from the first flavour bomb recipe (spiced granola sprinkles) to
the last (sundried tomato and olive focaccia). In between, there’s everything
from pesto and halloumi breakfast bagels to Friday night braaibroodjies, from
weeknight burritos to lazy spinach and ricotta lasagne. There are sweet treats
(speckled egg rocky road, anybody?) to a pretty little tiramisu that would hold
its own at any dinner party, to life-changing three-ingredient scones (flour,
cream, lemonade - you’ll never make them any other way again). For those who
have Sarah’s previous cookbooks, this one will make a happy addition to your
kitchen bookshelf; for those who have yet to discover her ... a delicious (and
healthy) treat ahead! Penguin Random House, R400 from Exclusive Books
Grow • Cook • Heal
This informative book by Caz
Hildebrand isn’t a cook book. Nor a
gardening book. But Herbarium is
crammed with bites of jolly useful
information about around 200 herbs
... sweet herbs (like basil) and tart
herbs (think sorrell and bergamot).
Minty, oniony, bitter, herbs to eat,
herbs to heal, and some which could
kill (nobody touch the Monkshood).
There are suggestions on what herbs
should be eaten with, and how they
can be used in oils and teas, as well
as loads of history, and interesting
facts about every herb from Angelica
to Watercress. Fabulous. Thames and
MILK – WHAT A WINNER!
ADVERTORIAL
Here’s what you should know to choose the best milk option for everyone in your family
Cow’s milk is a versatile and convenient source of important nutrients for the
whole family. It contains a unique combination of valuable nutrients, of which
some are typically lacking in many South Africans’ diets. These include calcium,
potassium and vitamin A. Milk is also an affordable source of good-quality
protein, and its overall health benefit stems from more than just the sum of its
individual nutrients. What’s more is that milk is ready to be enjoyed just as it is or
as a base in other dishes and helps to keep you feeling fuller for longer.
Your milk choices
The difference between full-cream, lowfat
and fat-free milk is the amount of
fat per serving, its energy (kJ) value and
the vitamin A content. When the fat of
milk is removed, the fat-soluble vitamin
A is lost. Children, elderly and immune
compromised people should therefore
rather use full-cream milk, while people
with diabetes or who are overweight
should use low-fat or fat-free milk.
250 ml
Full-cream milk - ≤8.5g fat and 640kJ
Low-fat milk - ≤3.75g fat and 518kJ
Fat-free milk - ≤1,25g fat and 362kJ
Put healthy options in your basket
It does not matter if you buy fresh, pasteurised milk
or long-life milk. It is equally nutritious. However,
if you buy powdered milk, make sure that it’s
real cow’s milk. Look at your food label and more
specifically the ingredients list. The list of ingredients will be short and the first item
will always be full-cream or fat-free (cow’s) milk. If not, it’s not real milk.
Don’t be fooled: Coffee creamer is not cow’s milk! Coffee creamer is made from
unhealthy plant fats and contains very little protein (0.1%) and no calcium or any
of the other important nutrients of milk. Coffee creamer is not a substitute for milk
and can never replace milk or formula milk in the diet of children or babies.
Take your pick: You’ll get the same unique combination of nutrients and the taste
you love whichever milk option you choose!
For more information, visit www.rediscoverdairy.co.za
or follow rediscoverDAIRY on Facebook.
An initiative by the Consumer Education Project of Milk SA
You can also choose to buy fresh
(pasteurised) milk or milk that keeps
for longer, such as long-life (UHT) or
powdered milk. It doesn’t matter which
one you choose – each offers you all
the goodness of cow’s milk.
Always keep fresh milk in the fridge.
Long-life milk can be stored in the
cupboard until you need it, but put it
in the fridge once it has been opened.
Powdered milk is convenient because
you can prepare only as much as you
need at one time.
Did you know?
• It is best to store your milk in the
back of the fridge (not the door) to
ensure it stays fresh – even when the
power is down.
• Want to use milk later or worried
about loadshedding? Simply freeze it
in smaller containers, and then let it
thaw in the fridge before use. A quick
shake once thawed and it’s ready to
drink or use in your favourite recipes.
Duane
Fishwick
Building a dream
When highly skilled architects, designers and builders
come together to work hand-in-hand with owners who
know exactly what they want, dreams come true.
It's hard not to take a deep breath
and say 'wow' when you first see this
exquisite North Coast dream home.
Minimalist, modern and luxurious, it's
simply picture-perfect.
Constructed and designed by the
expert teams from Stronghold
Build and Neospace Architects, this
show-stopping project began with a
conversation (during Covid lockdown)
between builder Duane Fishwick and
the homeowners.
“I was working with a client in
Simbithi and he referred me to the
owners of this project. I called them
up and we chatted briefly and, as
soon as lockdown was lifted, we met
on site,” says Duane, who started his
career in the architectural side of the
industry, but has since transitioned
to construction.
The owners knew exactly what they
wanted, which, Duane says, made the
whole process flow much easier. “They
were well prepared and hands-on
with lots of images and references.”
The home, which seems as if it would
be as well suited to an exotic island
destination as it is to the stunning
Zululami Luxury Coastal Estate in
Sheffield Beach where it is situated,
has five bedrooms (all en-suite), two
lounges, two swimming pools and full
solar and water back-up.
There is also a double garage, two
entertainment areas, a bar, kitchen,
scullery and dining area.
Duane loved being able to offer full
turnkey services to his clients as the
owner of Stronghold Build and a
co-owner of Neospace Architects.
“I always loved designing and
drafting plans, but the real fun and
my passion is in the actual building
of these structures. I love the
May 2023 Get It • Ballito • Umdloti • Umhlanga 27

process of bringing my visions
from plan to reality.”
By offering both design and build
services, Duane says he can ensure
that what is built is exactly per the
design plan, and within the client's
budget. He also offers his building
services to projects that have not
been designed in-house.
For this particular project, Duane
worked with professional architect
Martin Kluger from Neospace.
“From the first couple of meetings
we could tell that the clients knew
exactly what they wanted. Martin
began the design work and there
were minimal changes because we
really made sure we followed the
design brief. After nine tough months
of hard work by myself and my team,
the keys were handed over to our
very happy and excited clients.”
Without a doubt the most striking and
unique aspect about the home are
the two large simplistic timber arches
that frame the building. “These took a
lot of careful planning to ensure they
matched the design's simple, floating,
minimalist concept,” he says.
The home’s interior was done entirely
The
unconventional
bride
Nothing says ‘unique’
like a bride in a black
wedding gown! This
exquisite wedding was
planned and executed
by North Coast wedding
planners Oh Happy Day.
Here are the details...
“We are a wedding planning
company that loves to push the
boundaries creatively,” says owner
Jolene Botha. “We love bold and
bright ... but we also love black. So,
when our bride Nadia Buckley told
us she’d be wearing a black wedding
gown on her special day and that
her husband Tim would be wearing
a black Tuxedo (while the entire
wedding party, vendors included,
had been told to come dressed in
white for the occasion), we jumped at
the opportunity to turn this unique
wedding into a reality.”
The photographs of this incredible
day – set in the heart of the Cape
wine country – really do speak for
themselves, but Joelene shares a few
highlights about what made this
wedding so special.
“We hope this wedding inspires other
brides to be brave and bold when
making decisions that work best for
them,” says Jo.
THE HIGHLIGHTS
* Nadia (a professional makeup artist)
did her own makeup for her wedding
day and drew her inspiration from
'old Italian glamour', keeping her
accessories simple and low key;
* The string quartet, which played
the bride down the aisle, added the
perfect touch of old-world glam and
set the scene perfectly;
* A minimalistic colour palette can be
very effective when done correctly.
Nadia chose white flowers and a
neutral tablescape to match her
guests’ attire. When the venue was
full and they made their entrance ...
it was grand!
32 Get It • Ballito • Umdloti • Umhlanga May 2023

* Despite the overall theme of 'oldschool
glamour', there was a surprise
element of a night club 'after-party'
complete with stage, rigging and
lighting! SA deejays Pascale & Pearce
had the dance floor rocking all night!
“What inspired us most about being a
part of Nadia and Tim’s wedding day,
was the fact that they stood firm in
their ideas and never once doubted
their vision,” says Jolene. “Staying true
to who you are as a couple – both
creatively and emotionally – goes a
long way in ensuring you have the
best wedding that suits your needs,
and that there is nothing but pure
enjoyment from beginning to end.
It was a joy to create something that
we know will inspire other brides to
be themselves and follow their own
vision, because there is no right or
wrong when it comes to designing
your dream day!”
A ‘uniquely you’
wedding
Brides and grooms are
moving away from
traditional wedding décor
and using their wedding
as an opportunity to
express their unique style
and personalities instead.
From the use of sustainable
materials, to creating exciting and
unforgettable atmospheres, this
year’s wedding décor trends are all
about individuality, sustainability
and creativity. Ballito-based wedding
coordinator, Candice Morphew,
shares some of this year’s hottest
wedding trends.
First on the list of trends is statement
floral installations. From grand
ceiling installations to breathtaking
floral arches, couples are embracing
the beauty and impact of large-scale
blooms to create a wow factor in
their décor.
Another trend that has been popular
for a few years - and is not going
anywhere in 2023 - is the use of neon
signage. Couples use fun and quirky
phrases to add a touch of personality
to their décor.
Eco-conscious couples are opting
for sustainable décor options such as
reusable tableware, biodegradable
confetti and locally-sourced flowers.
Materials such as bamboo, recycled
glass and reclaimed wood are being
incorporated into décor as well.
Maximalism is also taking over
wedding décor in 2023. Bold colours,
patterns and textures are being
combined to create an electric and
visually-striking atmosphere.
Lastly, unconventional seating
arrangements are becoming more
popular with couples. Circular seating
or banquet-style tables are being
used to encourage a more interactive
and social atmosphere among guests.
Simply Fabulous Events encourages
couples to embrace their unique style
and preferences, and work hand-inhand
with them to create a wedding
that’s unforgettable for both the bride
and groom and their guests.
Let them eat
(fabulous) cake
Traditionally meant to
bring good luck to all
the guests, as well as the
bridal couple, wedding
cakes have evolved over
the years to become
magnificent centrepieces
and exquisite, unique
desserts served either
before or at the end of the
wedding reception. Smith’s
Bakeshop owner Taryn
Smith shares this year’s top
wedding cake trends ...
1Semi-naked wedding cakes are still our number
one, most-requested style. Semi-naked means
there is still a light layer of icing on the cake, but
it’s been scraped down so you can see the layers
of cake peeking through. It’s the perfect blank
canvas for any style, from rustic to modern and
boho to classic.
2
Pressed flowers. We love the pressed flower trend . . . it’s our
favourite look! Edible flowers are used to add pops of colour
and fun to your cake and they are perfectly safe to eat.
3
4
5
Big weddings are back with a bang and,
while huge statement wedding cakes are
back to feed all your guests and bring the
‘wow factor’, there are still many couples
eloping, or just having their closest friends
and family present. Mini tiered cakes are
perfect for these intimate celebrations.
Colour and texture. A lot more couples are
going for colour or texture (or both) to add
interest to their cakes. We include texture
with a simple stripe in the buttercream,
smudges and layers, hand-painted flowers
or (a bit more dramatic) the addition of rice
paper shards. Couples are also embracing
colour and I love it! Rich hues and metallics are making an
appearance and it’s a lovely way to bring in your colour
scheme in a different way.
Dramatic
flowers.
Goodbye
boring, old
cake table
… dramatic
flowers (either
on the cake or
on the cake
display table)
will make sure
your cake takes
centre stage.
According to Taryn, a few other trends to keep an eye
out for are: lambeth cakes (the old-fashioned piping
that gives the perfect vintage look for your big day);
interesting cake stands, props and separators (particularly
clear acrylic boxes with flowers used to separate the tiers);
the inclusion of pets (sweet little sugar paste versions of
couples’ fur babies are making an appearance on cakes
and it’s a lovely way to include your pets in your day if
they are not allowed at the venue.
florals
While it’s no secret that flowers can take up a
huge part of your wedding budget, it cannot be
Love Laugh, shares her favourite wedding flower
trends for this season …
Pops of colour
We’ve been all about neutrals (white, creams and greens)
for a while now, and while we love the simple, classic look
there is something wonderful about adding gentle pops
of colour. It is a beautiful way to symbolise joy and new
beginnings, so don't be scared to sneak them in!
Dried and preserved
The dried and preserved look is still going to be around
for a while. Dried bouquets and statement pieces are still
popular in interior design, and weddings can follow suite.
This doesn't necessarily only mean Pampass - there are
many beautiful, proudly South African options, including a
variety of indigenous, dried fynbos.
Bigger isn’t better
It is easy to get caught up in wedding planning, but you
don’t need a huge bridal bouquet or massive centre pieces
to make an impact. Keep it simple with bud vases and
single stem florals, and small, simple bridal bouquets are a
statement on their own.
Go green
While it’s not necessarily a cheaper option, going green is
still a favourite. Take it up a notch by stepping away from
eucalyptus garlands along the centre of the tables and
rather fill a selection of pots with a mixture of botanical
greenery.
Throw some love
Environmentally-conscious weddings are not a new trend,
but one that we hope will continue to grow. Thankfully
we’ve moved past the rice-throwing stage (!), so why not try
aromatic leaves (rosemary, eucalyptus) and dried flowers for
a biodegradable alternative?
Flowers in her hair
Step aside flower crowns (thank goodness!). We love
soft braids with delicate florals (not baby’s breath, rather
delicate options like heather) and wax flowers. It's a lovely
way to tie in the theme with a touch of nature in your hair,
and the softer and subtler the better!
Make it personal
Many brides feel they have to do things a certain way, but
there is no right and wrong. Keep it classic if you want,
but if that’s not your vibe, add a little personality and step
outside the box!
Artist behind
the lens
Always fascinated by photography, it
wasn’t until Michigan Behn was asked to
wedding that her love for bridal
photographry was unveiled.
44 Get It • Ballito • Umdloti • Umhlanga May 2023

I’m told my style
is ‘editorial’ and
‘documentary’.
reamy and romantic,
Michigan's documentarystyle
bridal photography is
incredibly popular - both
locally and internationally -
and it is easy to see why. We get
to know the artist behind the lens...
Tell us about your background and
when and how you discovered your
passion for photography.
I am one of four siblings - three girls
and a boy (the apple of all of our
eyes). When I think of my childhood,
I think of family. On weekends we
were surrounded by grandparents,
aunts, uncles and cousins, and much
of our childhood was spent in our
big garden and in the swimming
pool. I was always creative and had
an interest in photography from a
young age, but I decided to study
fashion at Inscape Design College.
When my (now) sister-in-law, Bron
Veale, asked me to assist her at a
wedding, it turned into a journey of
mentoring me through shooting,
editing and business skills. She shared
her years of experience and wisdom
and I couldn't be more grateful. I
decided to spread my wings, focus
wholeheartedly on photography and
start my own business in 2016.
Why the focus on
bridal photography?
I always say I 'fell into it', but I truly
believe it was just meant to be.
It's incredible working in that
environment and be a part of a day
filled with so much love and joy. It's
overwhelming and truly an honour to
capture it.
Talented and beautiful. Bridal photographer
Michigan Behn on her own wedding day.
Tell us about your style of
wedding photography.
I'm told my style is 'editorial' and
'documentary'. I love capturing
what unfolds in front of me as
naturally as possible, while bringing
personality and substance out of
intimate moments. I've always been
a sucker for romance and I think my
photographs have an old-school
sense of romance about them.
While people are my focus, I also
love capturing the beauty and light
around me.
What is the most important aspect
for you as photographer on
someone's wedding day?
I try to ensure the bride and groom
stay present, soaking in the day and
each other. I am a calming voice (and
a mood-lightener) if needed. I am
there for them.
What has changed about weddings
and what couples want from their
photographs?
These days couples are often
influenced by social media and
platforms such as Pinterest, and can
get caught up in what is 'expected'
of them and how they would like
themselves to look … especially
brides. Having been a bride myself
recently, I had to remind myself to
focus on the essence of the day
and how I wanted things to feel
rather than look. I have seen a shift
lately though. Couples opt for more
intimate and authentic weddings. I
can't speak for other photographers,
but the more 'posed' shots are taking
a back seat, making way for more
of the beautiful, raw moments and
natural, unforgettable, imperfect and
genuine imagery.
What is your favourite moment
at a wedding?
I don't have a favourite moment …
but more a favourite kind of moment:
a moment that wholeheartedly
captures the couple. It could be
a gaze after they've kissed, or a
sneaky show of love on the dance
floor - that's what I'm there for. I love
ceremony exit shots though …
pure bliss!
What are your do's and don'ts
for couples?
Don't sweat the small stuff, be too
strict with timing or let any family
members affect your decisions! Put
your and your partner's wants and
needs first, enjoy the build-up (it only
happens once and then boom, it's
your wedding day … and boom, it's
over!), and make sure you spend time
together and take breaks throughout
the day to reflect and take in all the
love. One more thing I recommend:
46 Get It • Ballito • Umdloti • Umhlanga May 2023
make sure there is enough of a gap
between the ceremony and bridal
shoots for couples to enjoy canapés
and time with their guests.
Your favourite place to shoot? And
your dream shoot destination?
That's a tough one! I love a home
wedding – they are always so
sentimental. I also love bush
weddings because there's something
so grounded about them. All our
local venues are unique in their own
way, though. I would love to shoot
in Mallorca and more in Europe. I am
Croatian, so I would love to shoot
there too one day.
