PERFECT BBQ RECIPES
We’ve had a bumper few
years of Royal celebrations
- with the Jubilee last
year and a Coronation to
look forward to soon. How
amazing it is to be alive in
this historic period - one
that we will surely discuss
with our children in years
to come. How ever you are
celebrating, we hope you
spend it well.
How often do you see catwalk pieces
you really, actually like? Us neither. But,
we’ve brought together three trends
we think are both fashion forward and
wearable...here they are:
1 - Pockets, pockets, pockets
The cargo pant is back - let’s leave
the really baggy ones to the teens and
instead opt for big utility pockets on
more tailored pieces
2 - Cutouts
Bear with us here - this doesn’t have to
be about midrif flashing or peekaboo hip
cutouts - instead look for clothing with
interesting negative space - it doesn’t
have to show a lot of skin to make it
interesting and there are lots of styles to
suit all sizes
3 - Netting
Few things remind us of beachy trips
more than neutral netted pieces. From
uber fine woven mesh (Acne Studios)
and fringe details (Giambattista Valli) to
rope-like (Rejina Pyo) or even metallic
iterations (Chloé), you can lean into this
trend as much, or as little, as you want.
Circles of
Stone
CIRCLES OF STONE: STONEHENGE AND PREHISTORIC JAPAN,
is the latest special exhibition at Stonehenge Visitor Centre. It explores the
similarities and differences between the cultures of the Neolithic builders of
Stonehenge and the corresponding Jomon period in Japan when stone circles
were also being built and used.
Circles of Stone features exceptional objects, some of which have never
been seen outside of Japan. One of the highlights is a flame pot – a highly
decorated type of Jomon vessel whose fantastical shape evokes blazing
flames. Flame pots are as much an icon of Japanese prehistory as Stonehenge
is of the prehistory of Britain, each provoking astonishment at
the skill and creativity of past
people and hinting at the
complexity and sophistication
of communities living in
Jomon Japan and in Britain
during the Neolithic period.
Also featured are fragments of
exquisite clay figurines, known
as dogu in Japanese. These
have been found at Jomon
settlements and stone circles
and it has been suggested they
may have represented earth
goddesses or spirits, for use in fertility or healing rituals. It is believed that many
dogu were intentionally broken and scattered during ceremonies.
BUILD BACK BETTER
Elasticizer Before
and After
Anabel Kingsley, Brand President and
Trichologist at Philip Kingsley, tells us how you
can strengthen hair and prevent breakage
Breakage and dryness are two common hair issues
that many people face. These problems can be
caused by a variety of factors, including excessive
heat styling, chemical treatments, and environmental
factors like sun exposure and pollution.
To prevent breakage and dryness, it’s important to
adopt a hair care routine that promotes healthy hair
growth. Using a pre-shampoo treatment such as the
Elasticizer or Elasticizer Extreme if you have coarser
hair is really important. This intensive pre-shampoo
treatment is designed to restore elasticity, moisture,
and shine to dry and damaged hair.
Using Bond Builder treatments such as Philip
Kingsley’s Bond Builder Trio is key. The main benefits
of bond building products are that they repair broken
bonds in the hair’s cortex providing increased
strength and resilience to damage such as heat
styling and colouring which can therefore help to
reduce signs of damage such as split ends, breakage,
dryness, tangles and frizz.
Ideally, you should combine your bond building
treatment with a weekly deep-conditioning treatment.
Both target breakage but from too different angles.
Aside from broken bonds, breakage also occurs due
to dryness and loss of moisture. Using a weekly preshampoo,
deep-conditioning treatment will ensure
that you are putting back and lost moisture to your
strands. When a healthy hair is hydrated it will stretch
up to a third of its length before snapping, however
a dry strand will be brittle and snap. Therefore,
hydrated hair has much more retention to breakage,
meaning you can grow strands, longer and stronger.
How the boarding
sector is prioritising
mental health
Boarding house staff strive to create a secure, supportive and nurturing
environment for students, so there is no wonder boarding schools are
well placed to prioritise pupil mental health and wellbeing.
Following a turbulent period of
uncertainty in the wake of the pandemic,
mental health and wellbeing has never
been so important.
In a recent article on this topic, Andrew
Russell, Headmaster of St David’s
College in North Wales said: “When
parents are looking for the right boarding
school for their family, three of the most
important questions they usually have
are: Where will my child sleep? What
will they eat? Who will support them?
In the past, support may have been
academically focused but now more than
ever there is a need for pastoral support.”
(Source: www.ukbsa.com)
Mental health has long been at the heart
of the pastoral care package at boarding
schools. Prioritising pupil wellbeing,
offering them regular opportunities to talk
freely about how they feel, and putting
their welfare at the heart of boarding
culture allows the potential for children
truly to flourish. For example, Fettes
College in Edinburgh instils a “culture
of openness and acceptance around
mental health in the school community”
and Queen Margaret’s School for Girls in
York states that “…wellbeing is ingrained
into everything we do, from the pupils’
perspective. We have truly been able to
put our pupils’ wellbeing at the centre of
our practice.”
Boarding school is all about learning to
live with others, experiencing a shared
space, working together, having extra
time to try new things and learning to
stand on your own two feet. All of these
experiences build a sense of resilience
and independence.
Much of this independence and
confidence comes from being with other
young people – but it also the support of
highly trained, caring and professional
boarding staff who put pupil wellbeing at
the heart of the boarding experience, to
ensure that students prosper and thrive
on solid foundations.
According to Downe House School, “A
boarding environment allows a school
to support the wellbeing of a pupil in
many real and tangible ways. Sleep is
so important for all teenagers to enable
them to function effectively. Boarding
staff are utterly committed to ensure
each pupil is getting enough sleep. We
stress the importance of healthy eating
and in a boarding environment we know
whether a pupil is following our advice.
Similarly, we support an active lifestyle
but we can see if pupils are stretching
themselves too far on the sports pitch.
Lines of communication are always open
between departments. The support pupils
receive in a boarding school is not just
theoretical but practical and real. The aim
is to furnish them with a ‘toolkit’ for life,
which will allow them to face the many
challenges in the world beyond school,
to prepare them for the unknown and to
enable them to flourish.”
(Source: www.ukbsa.com)
So, if you are considering boarding
school for your child, know that in
addition to the wider internationally
regarded academic teaching and
learning, mental health and wellbeing
is also at the heart of the boarding
experience.
WILD
AT HEART
TV star Ben Fogle is about to take a walk on the
wild side with a new UK tour. Editor Katie Thomson
caught up with him to find out more...
Your tour follows on from your wildly successful ‘Tales from the Wilderness’
a few years ago. Are you excited to get out in front of a live audience again?
Yeah I loved doing the last tour. It was a great opportunity to meet people who
have championed me and watched my shows over the years. What I wanted
to do with this one was bring something that is maybe even more
relatable for people. My last show was all about my experiences
with expeditions and how I’ve used them to build my confidence.
But what I wanted to do this time was to make a show about
how to find happiness and how to live a simpler life. Not
necessarily like some of the examples I’ll be sharing of people
who have gone to live in Siberia or outer Mongolia, but
just how to live a happier life. So yes, I can’t wait to start
touring again.
I can imagine it’s nearly impossible to encapsulate
all the experiences you’ve had and how they’ve
shaped you and put that into an evening. Was it
an interesting process to take stock of everything
you’ve done to be able to pull the show together?
Yeah, the last one was kind of quite easy because
there was a chronology to it. My journey from being
marooned on an island through to rowing oceans
and ultimately climbing Mount Everest. This one
is a little bit different as this is sort of a journey
around the world meeting different people and a
behind the scenes look at some of the places I’ve
been and the people I’ve met and kind of what
I’ve taken away from that. So this was actually
quite an interesting way of analysing some of
the experiences that I’ve had, from walking
through the remains of Chernobyl in Ukraine
through to people who are trying to bring
back the woolly mammoth in Siberia. But at
the heart of it all is this idea that happiness
is kind of a journey, not just a destination. So
many people kind of just trudge through life
waiting for that metaphorical summit that they
will eventually reach. What I have discovered
over the years is that there are so many people
who just enjoy the whole process and make the
most of the whole journey and that’s what I’m trying
to bring together.
I guess, in that way, you’ve never really conformed
to the nuclear life. We ask a lot of our children these
days; even though we know as adults how broad
and diverse our interests and abilities are, we still
ask children to conform to one form of standardised
testing. Would you say you would cover that in the
show, that there’s much more to life than ticking boxes?
Absolutely, I think that it’s almost like society wants to make
everything homogeneous. They want all cars to look the same,
www.minervamagazines.co.uk | 25

all people to look the same, to learn the
same, to have the same education, to live
in the same sort of house. My upbringing
was always very different to that anyway,
in that I spent a bit of my time in central
London, Dorset, a bit on a little farm in
Sussex and a bit of my time in the wilds
of Canada. It meant that I had quite an
eclectic list of experiences and I think
for me, my struggles with academics
and the fact that I wasn’t very good at
sport or exams meant that everyone
looked at me like I was a bit of a freak,
and it meant that I was forced look for
alternative ways of being me. I was able
to find that freedom in the wild. The ‘wild’
is obviously quite an expansive word, and
it’s down to your interpretation really. But
that is, as you very astutely said, is one of
my big things in life; trying to encourage
youngsters, families, individuals, couples
to do what they want to do, not what
society expects them to do and that’s
what I’m trying to share with this show.
I’ve sort of done bits of it over the years
with the expeditions I’ve been on. A lot
of people say, “why would you go and
climb Mount Everest?” “Why would you
row across an ocean?”. And the answer
is because you should try to enjoy each
day, not just sleepwalk through it.
Would you say it is your struggles
with self-doubt that push you to do
these more extreme challenges? You
surround yourself in many of them
with these athletes and Olympians
that have this mental fortitude beyond
anything the regular person would
have. Is it a case of confidence is a
muscle you’ve got to exercise, it’s not
just something you naturally have?
Absolutely, I think we all need some form
of validation, either from ourselves or
SO MANY PEOPLE KIND OF
JUST TRUDGE THROUGH
LIFE WAITING FOR THAT
METAPHORICAL SUMMIT
THAT THEY WILL EVENTUALLY
REACH. WHAT I HAVE
DISCOVERED OVER THE YEARS
IS THAT THERE ARE SO MANY
PEOPLE WHO JUST ENJOY THE
WHOLE PROCESS AND MAKE
THE MOST OF THE WHOLE
JOURNEY...
from others and by surrounding myself
with people who excel in whatever
field it might be, whether it is cycling or
rowing, it does help build your own self
confidence. Certain my last tour, ‘Tales
from the Wilderness’, focused quite a
lot on that, and there will be a little bit
of a cross over here because it’s about
how to improve your own self esteem.
I think so many people are racked with
self-doubt, especially in this age of social
media where you are constantly looking
at other people and you are looking at
their appearance and what they have and
what they have achieved, where they go
on holiday and their homes and so many
people then start having self-doubts
about what they’ve done with their life
or what they’ve achieved. But actually,
it’s all relative to who you are and what
you’ve done, and I think as soon as you
start comparing to others that’s a very
dangerous place, but when you work with
others it can actually create a beautiful
working relationship.
I guess travel must have really shaped
who you are as a person. Solo travel
is a huge passion of mine and I think
it’s because you are forced to problem
solve and it builds a certain sense
of resilience. Do you find that the
experiences you’ve had have given
you almost a tool kit to tackle other
everyday challenges in life?
Absolutely. I think travel teaches you
so many things about yourself. It gives
you perspective on where you live and
what you have, or what you don’t have,
or others don’t have and for me it has
been like a parallel education. I’ve learnt
more over the years through my travel
and journeys and encounters with people
than I ever learnt in formal education,
without a doubt. It has armed me with
tools that I have used in life far more than
any of my educational years and I’m a
huge supporter of gap years and travel
generally because I think it makes you
curious and it teaches you how other
people live. It opens your mind; it makes
you less insular.
It’s that quote ‘The further one travels,
the less one knows” isn’t it? The more
you travel, the more you realise there
is to see. Do you still find yourself
surprised and enlightened when you
go away?
Yeah! And I still absolutely love it. I still
get that flutter of excitement, and I go
away almost every week, but every
time I get that excitement of meeting
other people, eating different food,
experiencing different weather, different
environments. I find it so exciting, and I
feel so incredibly that I get to do all those
things. It’s one of the reasons I wanted
to put this show together; so that I can
bring a bit of the Columbian jungle and a
bit of Antarctica and a bit of Siberia into
theatres and share images and video and
experience some of those things that I’ve
been able to do with those who haven’t,
and maybe inspire people to pack a
rucksack and go off, and if not then to
live it vicariously through me during the
show.
With your tour, would you say there is
a sense of that we have to stop looking
at the actual destination and instead
enjoy ride a little bit more?
Yes, it is about enjoying the journey itself.
So many people sleepwalk through life.
It’s almost like it’s a trial and it doesn’t
have to be that way. Now obviously
people are struggling financially and there
are all sorts of reasons why people are
experiencing mental health problems
and many other things, but what I’ve
realised over the years is that human
nature is to aspire and to want more. So,
whether you want that job promotion,
or you want the bigger house, the better
car, or the newer phone. But actually, if
you simplify everything, then suddenly
those aspirations are all relative and it
means that to actually find that nirvana
of happiness becomes much easier to
attain. Sometimes the things that give
you great happiness are much easier
to actually find and hold on to. That’s
what I’ve discovered the wilderness and
the wild has done for me. To be in the
jungle in the trees, on a river, on the sea,
in the dessert. Away from the pressures
of social media and the excesses of the
internet, all those things. I find myself so
much more content and happy. I just had
a whole month in Antarctica for a new
show and it was revolutionary in terms
of not having any internet, email, any
contact. All I had was a satellite phone
to make a few calls to my family, and it
changed my whole psychology. I found
myself less anxious, happier, I chatted
more to people around me. I lived in
the now, rather than in someone else’s
little world. I think that’s the nuts and
bolts of what this show ‘Wild’ is going
to hopefully help people attain; not by
showing how climbing a mountain can
change your life, but just how in some
ways, changing your perspective can
do that. I hope the tour can be a bit
of a medicine for modern life that will
hopefully leave people smiling and feeling
uplifted.
LEXUS RX450h
P lug in hybrid
“Bringing electrified power to the premium car market.” Motoring Journalist
Sue Cooke test drives the new Lexus RX450h...
I have been living in a surreal world of
silence this week. I have been driving a
luxury SUV with hybrid power. The Lexus
RX450h has a 2.5 litre hybrid engine
and a rechargeable lithium-ion battery,
bringing electrified power to the premium
car market.
At start and up to a 42mph speed, the
RX450h runs on battery alone which cuts
exhaust emissions to zero. Press the
button to engage power and you hear
absolutely nothing. Disengage the brake
lever and slide the automatic gears into
Drive mode and gently press the throttle
and although you glide forward, the air is
empty of any sound, except for the tyres
quietly eating up the tarmac.
This noiseless existence spilled over into
my everyday life. I found I was getting out
of the Lexus and tiptoeing into shops and
out again. One thing it did bring home
was the fact that people cross the road
using their ears and not their eyes! A fair
amount of people just walked out in front
of this large SUV, because they hadn’t
heard it coming!
Press the throttle hard and the engine will
burst into life. Brake and cruise slowly
in traffic and you will hear the engine die
and hybrid power kick in. And when the
charge in the hybrid battery is depleted,
the vehicle will switch seamlessly to
hybrid electric performance, so that the
battery is recharged as you drive. This
is unlike most hybrid models which will
default to the petrol engine and that
means higher emissions and poorer fuel
economy until it can be connected to a
power supply for recharging.
Enter the cabin and the eye is focused
on the ‘Tazuna’ driver’s cockpit design
which follows the principle of hands on
the wheel, eyes on the road. There is a
new generation multi media system with
a 14 inch touchscreen that can be set to
show the power flow which encourages
environmentally friendly driving.
Lexus describes the exterior as a striking
‘Next Chapter’ design. The front grille has
been reinterpreted as a seamless unit that
merges into the body along its edges and
while the overall length is the same as
the current model, the bonnet has been
elongated and the A pillar moved further
back. The rear has a shorter overhang
and lights are set in a light bar that spans
the width of the car and wraps around
the corners.
The entry level Premium Pack
specification includes LED headlights
with automatic high beam, blind spot
monitor, rear cross traffic alert, a premium
12 speaker audio package, wireless for
Apple Car Play, a wired connection for
Android Auto and a wireless charging
tray. The RX uses a new triple zone
air conditioning unit and the latest
generation Lexus safety system plus.
The Lexus Link app on your Smartphone
will remotely lock and unlock the car,
activate air conditioning to warm or cool
the cabin prior to starting a journey.
This all new fifth generation RX can carry
several passengers in great comfort over
long distances, with all the space you
need for luggage or leisure equipment
and more space is partly because the
hybrid battery is now located entirely
beneath the vehicle floor. This also
enhances dynamic performance by
contributing to the car’s low centre of
gravity.
Lexus was the first to bring electrified
power to the premium car market, 17
years ago and in our noisy boisterous
world, it is very rare to find a bit of peace.
I shall miss driving the Lexus RX450h
very much.
PARK PLAZA
county hall, london
THE PIG, near bath
With the long summer holidays on the horizon, many parents
will be concocting a plan to entertain the kids and add a little
bit of learning in the mix - London, with its wealth of free
museums, abundant architecture and imitable buzz, is the
perfect destination for some leisure-time learning and horizonexpansion.
There are few hotels better-located for exploring these sights
as the Park Plaza County Hall - moments from Westminster
Bridge, many of the hotel’s rooms enjoy views over Big Ben
and the London Eye, and it is of course ideally located to head
to the big attractions without setting foot in a cab or the tube.
The London Aquarium and the London Dungeons are both just
a five minute walk away.
Rooms are spacious and very comfortable - more than enough
room for the whole family to spread out and relax.
- L’Italiano offers authentic Italian cuisine, an extensive wine list
and a three-course children’s menu. Spectrum Bar and Café
serves British classics for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and also
provides afternoon tea and late-night drinks.
If culinary exploration is also in order, the hotel is a 10 minute
bus ride from London’s buzzing Borough Market, or a 20
minute walk to Covent Garden.
Plaza County Hall London are available from £250.00* per
If you are looking for a real retreat from the pressures of
the modern world - an oasis of home-grown produce, cosy
textures and a place to completely unwind - then The Pig,
near Bath, has perfected that relaxation formula.
Sitting within the undulating folds of the Mendip Hills, the
hotel is a beautifully-renovated manor house, with a series
of interconnected outdoor spaces, all abundantly verdant
and well-maintained. The front features the hotel’s own
beehives, chicken coups and deer herd - it really is bucolic
magic. Inside, the decor is modern country rustic - a simple
but elegant palette, all articulated with lots of texture and
attention to detail, from the cosy billiard room to the lovely
restaurant - each table decorated with baskets of produce
and seasonal posies.
The restaurant is a shining example of what can be done
with local sourcing and ingenious cookery - all ingredients
are sourced within a 25 mile radius - diners can peruse
an illustrated map showcasing each one of the producers
- from breweries and vineyards to cheesemakers and
butchers. It’s clear that great pride and time is taken to
create something that is a celebration of both local food
provenance and seasonailty.
Though the hotel doesn’t have a spa, it has the most
enchanting treatment rooms, ensconced in the kitchen
gardens. Each potting shed is a tranquil haven, with the
atmospheric sounds of nature creating the soundscape
of pure relaxation. The treatment menu is pared back but
delightful - an essential part of a break that will leave you
feeling nothing short of refreshed and recharged.
THE ROYAL OAK IN
HAWKERIDGE
Ellie Keith and her partner’s
delightful visit to the hidden
gem of Hawkeridge...
We arrived at The Royal Oak on the outskirts
of Westbury, nestled beautifully in a quiet
location with lovely scenic views.
We were greeted warmly by the manager,
Laura, and promptly given a choice of places
to sit. We chose a cosy spot next to the fireplace, giving a nice
view of the restaurant’s homely décor and soft lighting.
We began our meal with a glass of the house Vin Rouge, served
alongside Tiger Prawns sautéed in Garlic and herb butter, and
toasted ciabatta. The prawns were flavourful and tender, yet
mild on the palette, with the dark cherry undertones of the wine
complementing our starter perfectly.
For our Sunday Lunch, we both opted for the rare beef sirloin,
served with fluffy roast potatoes, a good selection of fresh
vegetables, and a delectable gravy to tie it all together.
The plating was excellent, and the portion sizes were generous,
but despite the delightful selection of desserts on the menu, we
just couldn’t eat another bite.
If you enjoy top-quality food that’s served with a smile, I’d
recommend visiting The Royal Oak. We thoroughly enjoyed our
visit here and hope to return soon, and next time we will most
certainly be getting dessert!
theroyaloakinhawkeridge.com
Our menus are all centred around local produce from the estate and surrounding area. Our relaxed pub
is the perfect environment for long lunches & sumptuous suppers – the kitchen works with only the
finest of seasonal ingredients to ensure every mouthful is delicious.
In May and June, all of our mid week double and superior rooms are available at the twin rate if you
HOME EXTENSIONS:
Where to Start?
With the hassle and costs that come with
moving house, it’s no surprise so many of
us choose to extend our homes to create
more space and add value too. But there’s
a lot to think about when you’re extending
your home. So we’ve asked the property
advice site HomeOwners Alliance (hoa.
org.uk) about some of the essential things
you need to ask yourself first.
1. HOW MUCH VALUE WILL MY
BUILDING PROJECT ADD?
Firstly, it’s a good idea to establish
whether your planned extension will add
value to your home. A good local estate
agent should be able to give you an
indication of how much your extension
would increase your property’s value by.
They will be able to say what houses like
yours locally have that puts them in the
higher price bracket, whether that’s an
extra bedroom, bathroom or something
different. This is important research and
may have a bearing on how much you’re
prepared to spend and what projects you
tackle first.
2. DO I NEED PLANNING
PERMISSION?
You can perform certain types of work
without needing to apply for planning
permission; these are called “permitted
development rights”. Whether or not
your home extension is covered under
permitted development will vary on a
number of factors such as whether your
house is detached, a semi-detached or
a terrace and the size of your proposed
extension. And there are other conditions
that must be met: for example, if the
extension is more than half the area of
land around the original house, you will
need planning permission. For more
information visit Permitted development:
guide for homeowners at hoa.org.uk.
3. DON’T FORGET BUILDING
REGULATIONS APPROVAL
Regardless of whether or not planning
permission is required, a house extension
will need to comply with building
regulations. Speak to your builder about
who will be responsible for submitting
a building control application. They
should then work with building control
officers in your local council to ensure
compliance. But remember ultimately it is
the homeowner’s responsibility to ensure
this has been done. So once the building
work is complete, you should obtain a
completion certificate. This confirms that
the building work complies with the local
authority regulatory standards. It is a
good idea to get this before handing over
final payment to the builder.
4. DESIGNING YOUR EXTENSION
There’s no law saying you need to use an
architect, even for large renovations and
builds. But it’s certainly easier to have
a professional draw up the designs and
using an architect will generally mean
you’ll get a better end result. Architect
fees can range from 3% to 15% of the
total build cost; the amount you’ll pay will
depend on various factors including your
location and the amount of involvement
you want your architect to have with your
project. So if you’re using an architect
you’ll need to factor these fees into your
budget. To search for architects in your
area visit hoa.org.uk/services/find-anarchitect-near-me/
5. GETTING STRUCTURAL
CALCULATIONS
www.minervamagazines.co.uk | 43

You’ll likely need plans and technical
structural drawings if your extension
requires any structural changes. These
will be an important part of getting
planning permission, complying with
building regulations and for your builder
to follow. A structural engineer can
provide these. Shop around and speak to
a few structural engineers to get the best
price and service.
Ca’Pietra
6. FINDING THE RIGHT BUILDER
The key to any successful home
extension are professional, reliable
trusted tradespeople. When it comes
to getting the right builder, personal
recommendations from friends or family
members who have used the builders
is a good starting point, and also look
at online review sites when comparing
builders and other contractors.
Once you’ve narrowed down your search,
ask to visit one or two of the builders’
completed projects to ensure you’re
happy with the work and level of finish.
Bear in mind you may need to wait
several months to get the builder you
want. So start the search early.
7. GET QUOTES
The cost of a home extension will depend
on the type of extension, the size, the
structural work involved (will you need
steels?) and where you are undertaking
the project. According to Checkatrade, a
standard 20m² extension could typically
cost £36,000 (+VAT) to £52,000 (+VAT),
whereas a garage conversion typically
costs £7,500 (+VAT) -£20,000 (+VAT)
and a 30m² loft conversion could cost
£37,500 (+VAT) to £60,000 (+VAT).
However, whenever you are undertaking a
renovation project, it’s always a good idea
to shop around. We recommend getting
quotes from three different contractors
for the work. You’ll usually need to ask at
least five firms to get three quotes.
8. SETTING A BUDGET
When setting a budget for your job, start
by making a list of everything you would
like included. Compare your quotes
item by item and when pricing services
and materials always check the VAT is
included. We’d also recommend setting
aside around 10% of the total cost for
unexpected additional costs.
Where to splurge on your extension
We would recommend that if you can
afford it, you engage an architect for your
extension. You will pretty much always
end up with a better end product. They are
highly trained and especially good at seeing
the “big picture”. They make the best use
of the space you have, give interesting
designs, ensure the light is right, the feel is
good, and the house works.
Architects are usually good at ensuring the
work is professionally done. They are aware
of planning and permitted development
guidelines and will ensure the build meets
the requirements of building control and
that you have a structural engineer if you
need one. An architect can also help you
find the best builder, project manage the
whole works, and keep within budget.
The architect is the expert eyes and ears,
whose job it is to represent your interests
with builders and local authorities. They
could save you a lot of time and hassle.
How to save on your extension
An extension is big bucks. There’s no
getting around that. So take advantage
of sales to get what you want for the best
price. Don’t wait. This goes for everything
from tiles to sofas. With current supply
issues being experienced by many
companies, you’ll be pleased you ordered
early. And don’t forget to ask your builder
or architect if they can get you a trade
discount for anything you have said you
would source.
A lot of people choose to save money
on building projects by doing elements
themselves. For some people, knocking
down a false wall or destroying and
removing an old kitchen themselves will
save some money. At the other end of the
project, if you’re a dab hand at DIY then
you may decide to save by painting and
decorating the rooms yourself.
9. OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
Party Wall Agreements and your
neighbours
A party wall is the shared wall, usually
between a terrace or semi-detached
house, and divides the homes of two
separate owners. It also includes
garden walls built over a boundary and
excavations close to a neighbour’s
property (within three or six metres,
depending on the depth of the new
foundations). Party Wall Agreements
are most commonly needed for loft
conversions and extensions that need
the insertion of steel supports, a damp
proof course and/or digging of new
foundations.
Your home insurance cover
And before starting your project it’s
important that you contact your home
insurer to advise them about the works.
The extension will likely increase the
rebuild cost of your house. Insurers
take this into account when pricing
premiums. While building work is being
undertaken, it could put the property at
risk of damage. And if you don’t let your
insurer know and there’s a problem with
the property at some point, you may find
your policy is void.
You should also check that any
builder working on your property has
professional indemnity insurance to cover
the costs should something go wrong.
of homeowning issues, visit the
BESPOKE, HAND
PAINTED KITCHENS
We speak to Mark Nash, of Mark Nash Hand
Painted Kitchens & Furniture, to find out more
about what makes his kitchens so special...
“This is, and always has been, my own
business and I’ve never compromised on
what has been my vision, which is to be
the best in the business.
I began my career as an antiquarian
bookbinder, but soon realised I would
need to diversify in a world where this
was an increasingly less sought after—
albeit highly skilled—profession. As my
father was a traditional decorator, and his
father before him, it wasn’t a huge leap
of faith to decide to turn my hand to the
family trade, with a strong sense of pride
that I was following in my father’s and
grandfather’s footsteps.
My dad demanded the highest standards
and there were no favours afforded to
the son who became his apprentice! it
certainly invested in me the sense that
there would be a lot of painters and
decorators out there, but not all of them
would have what it took to truly call
themselves masters of their craft. Whilst
learning on the job with my father, I took
my City and Guilds at college where my
penchant for decorative marbling effects
earned me the nickname of the ‘Carrera
Kid’ and I was soon able to strike out on
my own with confidence in my pedigree
and my expanding list of satisfied clients
who became repeat customers— some
of whom still call on me all these years
later.
I have been running my own business
for many years now and have had the
privilege of working for the likes of The
National Trust, amongst many other
discerning clients who demand the
highest quality results for the interiors
of their listed buildings using only the
best traditional materials. I began handpainting
kitchens for a cabinet maker
called Optiplan in my hometown of
Swindon, once my reputation spread, I
was eventually invited to join Traditional
Painter, which is an elite group of
craftsmen and women based in the UK
and abroad whose membership alone
inspires confidence in those who want a
guarantee of perfection. Specialising in
kitchen painting enabled me to hone my
craft even further and develop complete
confidence in my own work, knowing I
could try out any new products in my
own workshop. After 11 years of being
a member, I decided to move on allow
someone else to take my place.
Being prepared to be flexible will
always win the day (and the job), so
remembering to offer any added value
you can that won’t detract from the
quality of your work is my advice. It’s
been many years since I’ve needed to
paint ceilings and walls, as my stock-intrade
evolved to be a specialist kitchen
furniture painter, but I’m not averse to
putting this back on the agenda for many
of my clients—and it’s put me back in
touch with the wider range of products
on the market. Fortunately, I’ve kept fit
these past years and can boast the same
weight that I was in my twenties, so I’m
not averse to climbing ladders and plying
a ceiling.
In short, my life experience has taught
me to be prepared to diversify, but I have
never lost sight of my core craft which will
always be a traditional kitchen furniture
painter.
“I still believe an expertly painted kitchen
remains one of the savviest investments a
homeowner can make.”
Linje Kitchen
Create your
Pick-and-Mix
kitchen design
Combining different materials, metals, and colours can elevate the look of any kitchen
design. Not only does it add visual interest and depth to a space, but it can also create
a unique and personal atmosphere that reflects the homeowner’s style. Dawn Filkins,
Head of Creative at Smile Kitchens explains how this look can be achieved...
PLAY WITH COLOUR
Incorporating colour into a kitchen design
can bring it to life. While neutral colours
such as white, grey, and beige are
eternally timeless choices, using bold and
vibrant colours can make a statement.
For example, a navy blue island paired
with white cabinets creates a classic
and chic look, while a bright backsplash
adds a pop of colour and energy to
the space. Mixing different shades and
tones of the same colour can also create
a monochromatic design that still has
depth and contrast.
COMBINE METALS
Metal accessories are also a great way
to add depth and texture to a kitchen
design. Whether it’s a stainless-steel
oven, brass tap and sink, or copper
pendant lights, metals can add character
to a space through contrasting warmth
and industrial touches. Taking it a step
further by bringing together different
metal finishes, such as brushed nickel,
oil-rubbed bronze, polished chrome, or
even a matt effect can create a layered
look that is both cohesive and visually
interesting.
NATURAL VS INDUSTRIAL
One way to incorporate mixed materials
is by pairing natural wood with metal.
For example, using a wooden island with
a brushed nickel or brass countertop
creates a beautiful contrast that is both
modern and rustic. Similarly, using metal
handles and knobs on wooden cabinets
can add an industrial touch that’s still
warm and inviting.
CONTRAST YOUR
COUNTERTOPS
Another way to use mixed materials
is by incorporating different types
of countertops. Marble, granite, and
quartz all have their unique benefits
and appeal, and combining them in a
kitchen design can create a stunning
effect. For example, using a dark granite
countertop on the perimeter cabinets and
a light-coloured marble countertop on the
island can create a beautiful contrast that
makes the island stand out.
CONSULT A DESIGNER
Understandably, for many consumers
creating a design with mixed materials,
metals, and colours can be both
overwhelming and intimidating. By
working with a professional kitchen
designer, like those at Smile Kitchens,
homeowners can ensure that their
vision is brought to life in a functional
and practical way. There are endless
possibilities for creating a stunning
kitchen design, a professional designer
can help you create the right design that
gives you the kitchen of your dreams.
Moving House
Checklist
Property conveyancing lawyers at RWK Goodman take
you through the important steps in the property buying/
selling process...
DO I NEED AN ESTATE AGENT?
One of the very first steps to selling a
property is preparing for it to be on the
market. We would always recommend
that you use a local estate agent who is
appropriate for your type of property.
Before it goes on the market, you will
need to be advised on how much it
should be sold for. This is where it’s a
good idea to speak with a few estate
agents to value the house, with the
possibility of some valuing higher than
others.
CAN I AFFORD TO MOVE
HOUSE?
If you are buying a house, the first steps
are to think about where and what you
want. The main consideration of a move
is affordability. This doesn’t just apply
to first time buyers, but for everyone.
If you are wanting a bigger or smaller
property, or a change of location
you will need to consider if you are
financially capable. If you are likely to
be borrowing, then you will also need to
speak with a Mortgage Broker. As soon
as you have worked out the price range
for your property, you can now start the
house hunt. It’s always worth looking
at a lot of options and you should view
them in person before you agree on
one. Other factors to consider when
finding a house are public transport
routes, school, doctors, and dentists.
YOUR DECISION IN PRINCIPLE
When looking for a house, it’s helpful
to get a decision in principle on your
mortgage. This can give you an idea of
how much you can borrow. Therefore,
you can start to look at properties
knowing you can afford them. This will
remove disappointment in the long run
of not being able to get a mortgage
offer on houses you had been looking
at.
Working from home...
When my grandfather arrived in Wiltshire
in 1926 it was said that solicitors
were shooting themselves after the
introduction of the Law of Property Act
1925 which brought about changes in the
administration of property law.
Recently, the most radical changes
have been brought about in the way we
deal with probate administration in the
last hundred years and that was during
lockdown.
The centralisation of administration has
meant delays have become the norm
in the courts, the land registry and the
Probate registry heightened by COVID
giving the green light for us to work from
home. Telephone contact with these
organisations has become anonymous
with messages trying to deflect us to go
online.
In my firm’s case I have moved my
workplace to my home address where
there is no hiding place because
telephone calls are rerouted. It helps
in fact to be a member of that dying
breed the general practitioner because
matrimonial, residential and commercial
property problems overlap as do
dealing with mental infirmity and the
consequences of death. Our professional
controllers preach to us that we must
“know the client”. It also helps to know
which executive would be most suited to
handle the client’s affairs.
When I see potential clients I do offer
home visits because you want the
meetings to take place in a relaxed
atmosphere so that the dynamics of the
family or organisation can be understood
in the home setting rather than a faceless
interview room. The nearest neighbours
to the consulting room at home are deer,
rabbits and badgers rather than traffic
wardens.
LIGHT IT UP
As well as being essential for utilising
the space, good lighting is key to
making a space inviting. You’ll need
a mix of safety lighting that covers
pathways and walls, and then some
softer light to pool on the table.
Rechargeable table lamps are a great
option, as are festoon lights. You can
string these on metal shepherds hooks or
even get a bar that clips to the table so
you can hang them along the length.
Cast Iron Fire Pit, £120, roseandgrey.co.uk
DINING OUT
There are a myriad of options for
seating, including rising tables to allow
you to transition from lounging to dining.
When you’re choosing your furniture,
make sure you go for one with a good
guarantee as you’ll want it to stand the
test of time.
Also think about how many seats you
will need - it’s better to go for an option
that suits you 95% of the time, with
options to supplement with additional
modular seating as and when required.
SOFT FURNISHINGS
Adding texture and softness really
transforms a space. You can use regular
cushions and blankets, just make sure
to bring them in at night.
Covering the floor with an outdoor rug
can really make the space feel complete.
Adding texture to
the table
with a
napkins can really set the scene too.
BEAUTIFUL
TABLEWARE
Vibrant salads, grilled meats and
delicious desserts all look even better
served in lovely ceramics - large serving
bowls and platters help to encourage
everyone to dig in and share.
FEEL THE HEAT
On cooler evenings, heat sources can
keep the fun going - patio heaters are
an efficient way to keep the cool air at
bay. Fire pits and bowls are great for
atmosphere - just
make sure you are
burning seasoned
wood.
LAWNCare
Whether your garden is large or small,
you can still achieve a great-looking
lawn. Here are some spring tips to get
your lawn in good shape…
Clean up
Whether it’s leaves, twigs, or other types of debris that has fallen
onto your lawn, your lawn will be shouting out for a mighty clean-up.
Mowing
One of the most important lawn care jobs for a good-looking
lawn is mowing. As the weather warms up it’s likely your lawn
will need mowing weekly. Keep the cut between 25mm (1’’) and
40mm (1.6’’) in length. A healthy lawn can survive an occasional
close cut but repeatedly scalping the lawn will damage it. If the
weather is dry, increase the height of the cut up to 50mm (2’’).
This allows the grass to retain moisture to stop it from drying out
too quickly.
Bare patches
After the harsh winter, your lawn may be looking a bit patchy. It’s
best to boost the lawn with extra seeds to make your lawn look
thicker and greener. Just carefully rake the patch to create a bed,
sow the seeds with a little topsoil and be sure to water regularly.
Ground temperature needs to be above 5°C for the seed to
germinate slowly.
Weeds
As our gardens spring back to life, unfortunately, so do the
weeds! It can feel like a never-ending battle to keep your lawn
weed-free. But, if left untreated, weeds can take over, they will
compete against your grass for sunlight, moisture, and nutrients,
resulting in your lawn not looking as healthy as it could. You
can remove weeds by hand, but also consider a weed and feed
complete treatment.
Leave it wild
Dandelions and other ‘weeds’ provide an important source of
pollen. If you can, consider leaving an area of your lawn to grow
a little longer all-year round, or perhaps you might even consider
joining ‘No Mow May’, a campaign that encourages you to put
the mower away for a month to allow nature to do its thing! If you
do leave it to grow longer, smaller plants such as daisies, selfheal
and clover will get a chance to flower, providing a butterfly and
bee buffet. Once May is done you could continue to mow less or
at different lengths and frequencies throughout the summer to
help wildlife in your garden.
plants, and is particularly damaging
to tender new growth and blossom in
the spring. The risks of frost damage
can be reduced by taking some simple
steps to protect the plants in your
garden.
2. Earth up potatoes and promptly
plant any still remaining Potato plants
need ‘earthing up’ as they grow, to
protect early shoots from frost damage
and ensure the developing potatoes
aren’t exposed to light, which turns
them green and poisonous.
3. Plant out summer bedding at the
end of the month Bedding plants
Plant out summer bedding once the
risk of frost has passed
provide a temporary decorative
seasonal display for beds, borders,
containers and hanging baskets.
4. Water early and late to get the
most out of your water, recycle water
when possible Water is a limited and
valuable resource, but is also essential
for plant growth. To make the most of
water, collect what you can rather than
use tap water. Store and use it safely.
5. Regularly hoe off weeds Run a hoe
over a bed or between rows to kill
most weed seedlings. Choose a dry
day so seedlings dry out on the surface
rather than re-root into moist soil.
6. Open greenhouse vents and doors
on warm days Greenhouses can get
very hot very quickly and can easily kill
off fragile young plants.
7. Mow lawns weekly – but consider
leaving some areas uncut for wildlife A
good mowing regime is an important
part of maintaining a healthy lawn. The
cutting height and mowing frequency
will depend on the look you want to
achieve, whether it be a close-cut
‘classic’ lawn or longer-grassed wildlife
lawn.
8. Check for nesting birds before
clipping hedges Now is a good time
to clip hedges to maintain their shape
but be sure to check for nesting birds
before you start.
9. Lift and divide overcrowded clumps
of daffodils and other spring-flowering
bulbs Dig them up after flowering,
split into smaller groups and replant to
establish new colonies. New clumps
should settle in quickly and flower the
following year.
10. Watch out for viburnum beetle and
lily beetle grubs Viburnum beetle egg
hatch in early May. Check susceptible
plants frequently from spring onwards
so action can be taken before a
damaging population has developed.
Lily beetle and their grubs lay on the
underside of leaves so check daily
for any sign of them and remove
immediately.
FROM GOOD TO GREAT
WHAT MAKES GREAT CARE IN LATER LIFE
We explore the details of what makes for great care in later life...
As we age, our needs change, and we
require more specialized care to maintain
our quality of life. Great care in later life
is not only about meeting the physical
needs of older adults but also about
providing compassionate and respectful
care that promotes their overall wellbeing.
We explore the key elements that
make great care in later life, including
compassionate and respectful care, a
safe and comfortable living environment,
and activities that promote well-being
and independence.
Great care in later life should prioritize
treating older adults with dignity and
respect. This means showing empathy
towards their physical, emotional, and
social needs. Caregivers should take
the time to listen to their concerns and
preferences, and provide personalised
care that meets their cultural values.
For example, older adults may have
specific dietary requirements, or they
may prefer to receive care from someone
who speaks their native language. By
acknowledging these preferences,
caregivers can create a more positive
and supportive environment for older
adults. Furthermore, compassionate and
respectful care should extend beyond
meeting basic needs. Caregivers should
also prioritise social and emotional
support, recognising that loneliness and
isolation can have a significant impact
on older adults’ overall health and
well-being. This can involve providing
opportunities for social interaction, such
as group activities, or simply taking the
time to engage in conversation and build
relationships with older adults.
A safe and comfortable living
environment is essential for great care
in later life. This involves ensuring that
the living environment is clean, safe,
and accessible. Caregivers should
take steps to prevent falls and other
accidents, such as removing tripping
hazards and installing handrails. They
should also provide appropriate medical
equipment and assistive devices, such
as wheelchairs and walkers, to help older
adults maintain their independence.
In addition to meeting physical needs,
great care in later life should also
prioritise emotional comfort. This
can involve providing a warm and
welcoming environment, with comfortable
furnishings and decor that reflects the
personal preferences of older adults.
Caregivers should also take steps to
ensure that older adults feel secure and
supported, such as providing access
to emergency response systems and
ensuring that they have access to
assistance when needed.
Finally, great care in later life should
prioritise activities that promote wellbeing
and independence. This can
involve offering a range of social and
recreational activities, such as exercise
classes, art therapy, and music therapy.
These activities not only promote physical
health but also provide opportunities for
social interaction and emotional support.
In addition to structured activities,
caregivers should also encourage
older adults to pursue hobbies and
interests that they enjoy. This can involve
providing access to books, movies,
and other forms of entertainment, or
simply encouraging older adults to
explore new interests and hobbies. By
promoting independence and autonomy,
caregivers can help older adults maintain
a sense of purpose and fulfilment, even
as they age.
Great care in later life is about more than
just meeting physical needs. It involves
providing compassionate and respectful
care that prioritises the overall well-being
of older adults.
IS it time to get your sipp
in order?
Kathryn Smith Cowap, a Partner at
Wansbroughs highlights the importance
of getting your SIPP in order.
Following the announcements in the recent Budget that the lifetime
pension allowance would be abolished and the limit at which tax
is paid on pension contributions is to be raised from £40,000 per
annum to £60,000, now is a good time to ensure that your pension
arrangements are up to date and accurately reflect your wishes.
While the importance of having an up to date, valid Will is wellknown,
many clients are surprised to find that their Will does not
cover their Self Invested Personal Pension (SIPP).
Your SIPP does not form part of your estate on your death, so it
won’t be covered by your Will (and won’t form part of your estate for
inheritance tax purposes).
Who receives your SIPP after your death is in the hands of the
pension provider trustees, so it’s important for them to know your
wishes.
Any expression of your wishes is not legally binding as the pension
provider trustees have a duty to ensure the money is paid to the
appropriate people. However, if you have not made your wishes
clear for them, then this will likely lead to delays and expense, as
well as the risk of your wishes not being followed at all.
As life moves on, relationships change and your wishes potentially
alter, the advice is to make sure you have completed the SIPP
provider’s ‘nomination’ or ‘expression of wishes’ form…. and to
keep it up to date! You may have completed the form years ago
when you opened the SIPP, and never thought to have looked at it
since.
Using the occasion of updating your Will to review your SIPP
arrangements makes sense, and you can store a copy of your
wishes with your Will, thereby ensuring that your executors and
loved ones have no difficulty locating your wishes after your death.
Most people are aware that it’s wise to put Wills and Lasting Powers
of Attorney in place, but one ought to add pensions to that list to
ensure that your affairs really are in order.
