RACE. ROOST/WHITEFACEREGION.COM
The ground changes from brown to green, and the weather
gets warm enough to be able to ride without getting dressed
for the North Pole. It’s spring, finally! Spring events are happening,
legs are slowly waking up and getting stronger, and you’re
thinking ahead to riding with friends, enjoying good times, riding
new events, or revisiting memories of great rides taken at past
events by doing them again.
We know exactly how you feel! We can’t pump up those tires for
you, but we can let you know about all these great upstate events that
will help you make this your best season of cycling in a long time!
First up on Saturday, June 3 is the Whiteface Mountain Uphill
Bike Race that could definitely be described as a challenge. Break
out your climbing legs and pedal eight miles up with an average
grade of 8% to the top of the Veteran’s Memorial Highway for some
spectacular 360-degree views while you get your breath back.
Whiteface is New York’s fifth highest peak and you can see all the
way to Montreal! The race starts at 5:30pm, so there will also be
some late day sunset vibes, plus fruits, snacks, and beverages at
the finish line. All participants get a T-shirt and bragging rights.
Remember, “It ain’t bragging if you’ve really done it!” Visit: whitefacerace.com/bike.
The very next day on Sunday, June 4, also in the Whiteface
region, is the Wilmington Whiteface 100K & 50K Mountain Bike
Race. The courses feature a mix of rugged backcountry roads,
stretches of flowing and smooth singletrack, and plenty of climbing
on the 62- and 31-mile routes. You’ll be able to explore Jeep roads
near Jay and Saddleback mountains, along with technical stretches
of singletrack at Hardy Road Trails, Blueberry Hills trails, and
Flume Trail Mountain, with rest stops every 12 miles, a post-race
meal, finisher medal, and an athlete gift. Go to: bikereg.com.
Also on June 4, if you’re not quite up to climbing a mountain,
you can contribute to supporting the 29 million Americans who
live with diabetes by riding in the Tour de Cure: Capital Region
at the Ellms Family Farm in Ballston Spa. This longstanding area
event, organized by the American Diabetes Association, offers 10-,
30-, 62-, and 100-mile routes with full support along the roads with
bike mechanics, volunteer route marshals, rest stops with food and
water, cheering volunteers and more. It’s a great way to have a good
time while helping others. Check out: diabetes.org/capitalregion.
The next weekend on Saturday, June 10 is the 26th annual
North Country Subaru Black Fly Challenge Adirondack gravel
News Briefs
PTNY Celebrates
and Continues Robin
Dropkin’s Legacy
By Jeffrey Bender, Board Chair, PTNY
Last year saw some truly amazing wins for New York’s
parks, trails, and public lands, not to mention for the
communities and groups that love and advocate
for them. In a bittersweet note, early 2023 also saw
the loss of a decades-long architect of those wins – long-time Parks & Trails New York
Executive Director Robin Dropkin.
Robin’s tireless work led to many of the phenomenal improvements and expansions
of New York’s public green spaces – things we now may take for granted as staples but
were anything but when Robin joined PTNY as executive director in 1990. It’s hard to
fathom the hole created by her loss, but its ripples will be felt for a long time in the world
of green space advocacy. Her legacy is etched across the face of the entire state: from
the Empire State Trail (built on the back of PTNY’s “Close the Gaps” Erie Canalway Trail
Campaign), to grants supporting public lands and grassroots friends groups (piloted
by PTNY in 2014 and now funded through the Environmental Protection Fund), and
the many parks still open due to her tenacity in launching the Save Our State Parks
Campaign in 2010.
The outpouring of remembrances after Robin’s passing in early 2023 has been a testament
to her impact on our greenways, state parks, the PTNY staff and board, and all
New Yorkers who visit our public green spaces for joy, adventure, connectivity or solace.
While there is certainly grieving at her loss, Robin would have wanted us to – above
all – continue our critical work. As we approach the Centennial Year of our NYS Parks
System in 2024, PTNY is celebrating the monumental $4.2 million Environmental Bond
Act passed in 2022, and the continued deep investment in our public lands expected for
the fiscal-year 2024 NYS Budget. This is just the beginning, though.
Channeling Robin’s commitment to building a truly connected network of greenways
and parks – accessible to all New Yorkers – will be the clarion call for the next 100 years of
our state parks system... and for the legacy of green space we leave the next generations
far into the future.
While Robin is missed, it is a solace to know that whenever we step into a NYS park,
or onto one of our many trails and greenways, we are connected to her life’s work. We
are grateful to continue her critical and impactful work for the future of our public green
spaces, and the New Yorkers who use and love them.
LOCALLY OWNED AND OPERATED FOR OVER 27 YEARS!
Gwen Allard Inducted Into
Hall of Fame Class of 2022
APRIL 2023 5
ISHPEMING, MICH. – Gwen Allard, a pioneering snowsports
educator, spent a half century focusing on helping
others learn how to ski, with a particular focus on adaptive
skiing. She was one of the first to embrace adaptive
education and went on to become a well-respected leader
within the Professional Ski Instructors of America and
American Association of Snowboard Instructors for her
innovative teaching methodology and the ability to effectively
communicate it to students. Along the way, she was
a model of perseverance in rallying the entire ski industry
around adaptive sport.
Gwen Allard was born in 1937 and currently lives in
Mendon, Vt. Growing up in Schenectady, she gained an early passion for the outdoors
from her father. She was influenced early on by Frederica Anderson, a female role model
who taught skiing at nearby Maple Ski Ridge for over a half-century. In 1964, Frederica
invited Gwen to start teaching herself, igniting a lifelong passion. By the ‘70s, Gwen began
to focus her interest more towards adaptive, seeking mentorship from Bruce Gavett,
an early pioneer in the field. In the mid-70s she founded the Gore Mountain Adaptive
Program, one of the earlier adaptive-specific programs in the country.
As she began her engagement with adaptive sport, she realized that the development
of standardized, professional teaching methods was vital. She carried that
vision across her entire career. After earning her PSIA Level 3 in 1974, she then went
on to become executive director of PSIA-Eastern in 1975, where she also founded the
PSIA-E Foundation.
Her lifetime of methodic educational protocols came to the fore with the passage of
the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990. With her knowledge, she was able to provide
strong counsel to the teaching and resort industry on how to best manage new protocols
to truly provide a great experience for adaptive snowsports enthusiasts.
In an era when risk awareness was growing, collaborated with Werner Schuster to
develop the first significant safety manual for the National Ski Areas Association. As environmental
awareness was becoming more predominant within the industry, she brought
together leaders from PSIA, National Ski Patrol, Snowsports Industries America and the
Adaptive Sports Foundation to develop educational materials.
One of her most noted accomplishments was development of the Adaptive Sports
Foundation at Ski Windham (now Windham Mountain). Starting with a fledgling program
in 1983, she grew it to become an epicenter for adaptive sport. In 2005, the foundation
opened the Gwen Allard Adaptive Sports Center which continued to grow and now
features its own chairlift.
In the 1980s, she also began working with Disabled Sports USA (now Move United),
leading to PSIA/AASI recognition of adaptive sport. By 1987, PSIA/AASI and its divisions
were training and certifying adaptive teachers.
One of Gwen’s crowning achievements was the innovation of the Double H Ranch
in Lake Luzerne. She had been invited in 1997 by ranch visionaries Charlie Woods and
Paul Newman to investigate how they might make use of an abandoned ski area on their
property. Calling on her industry network, Gwen generated hundreds of thousands of
dollars in donated equipment, put together a staff and volunteer team to make the ranch
a thriving success for adaptive sport, opening in 1998.
Double H Ranch was the proving ground for a PSIA-AASI program that ultimately
reached 70 organizations nationwide impacting over 10,000 adaptive instructors and
20,000 adaptive students. To further showcase the advancements in adaptive education
in America, Gwen pushed for the addition of an adaptive skier onto the U.S. Demo Team
for the 1991 Interski Congress held in St. Anton, Austria. Diana Golden, who would go
on to become a Hall of Famer, wowed the audience and set the stage for adaptive participants
on future Interski teams.
In recognition of her contributions to the adaptive community in NY, Gwen was
honored by President George W. Bush, Governor George Pataki, and Mayor Michael
Bloomberg. Disabled Sports USA in 1999 honored her with its Jim Winthers Award for
volunteerism. In 2001 she was named to the Adaptive Sports Hall of Fame. A year later,
she was recognized by PSIA-AASI with its Educational Excellence Award, one of its highest
honors. Visit: skihall.com.
Lapland Lake XC Ski & Vacation Center for Sale
NORTHVILLE – A decade ago, Paul and Kathy Zahray
learned that their favorite vacation resort was for sale.
Life should be an adventure, and in December 2014 they
purchased Lapland Lake.
Paul and Kathy say operating Lapland Lake has been
a bit more challenging, and much more rewarding, than
they expected. Their favorite part is the strong and consistent
support we get from our customers, staff, volunteers, neighbors, and local community.
Knowing the transition process may take some time, they have decided to list the
resort for sale with an experienced business broker, Rick Roberts of Inglenook Realty.
Their hope is to find new owners who will operate Lapland Lake with passion and
energy, making improvements while preserving the character that makes Lapland Lake a
special place for so many. If this might be you, their broker can help you understand the
financial aspects of ownership. Paul and Kathy are willing to talk directly with potential
new owners about the skills and responsibilities involved. They are available to work with
new owners during a transition, and if requested might continue with some responsibilities
for a longer time.
The Zahrays are not planning to leave the area. They plan to enjoy the ski trails in
winter and the lake in the summer. Visit: laplandlake.com.

The following weekend, on Sunday, April
30, the seventh annual Sasha’s Superhero
Run to Help Ukraine is a 5K Run/Walk,
starting at Halfmoon Town Park and on
adjacent country roads. There are also Kids’
Fun Runs. The family-friendly race was organized
by the family and friends of Sasha,
who passed away unexpectedly as a baby on
Christmas Eve in 2016. The superhero theme
of the event was adopted to honor parents
whose babies and children passed before
their time, as it takes superhuman strengths
to go on after a child dies.
Sasha’s family is Ukrainian so when the
illegal invasion of Ukraine began in 2022,
the fundraising turned to helping Ukrainian
children affected by the war. In 2022, $42,300
was raised and distributed among children’s
hospitals in Kyiv and Sumy, charities helping
families of seriously injured children, volunteers
feeding displaced pets, and direct
contributions to 14 families with kids fleeing
the war. This year the race will continue
to raise funds to aid Ukrainian children, as
well as towards portable power stations for
Ukrainian civilians and military.
Children and adults are encouraged to
wear their favorite superhero costumes.
Teams and groups are welcome. Raffles,
vendors, and a memorial ceremony to honor
lost children are part of the event. Visit:
sashasrun.com.
Also on April 30, celebrate the finale of
Autism Acceptance Month at the Hero 5K for
Autism at Mohawk Harbor in Schenectady.
The Autism Society Greater Hudson River
supports programs that impact and enhance
life skills, mental health, and personal safety
of Autistic community members through
Structured Life Coaching, SenseAble
Swimming providing 1-on-1 water safety
instruction, and SenseAble Play community
meet-ups. Superhero costumes are encouraged!
Go to: asghr.org.
Or, head north on April 30, to join the
fun at the 43rd annual Doc Lopez Run for
Health Half-Marathon & 5K Trail Run.
It’s a great way to celebrate springtime in
the Adirondacks and support the health
and well-being of the community. The
Doc Lopez Run for Health is “a race for the
hardy,” requiring half marathoners to climb
the challenging Spruce Hill between Keene
Valley and Elizabethtown. The new 5K trail
loop along the Cobble Hill Golf Course is
mostly flat and fast so it’s very welcoming to
all runners and walkers.
Dr. Robert “Doc” Lopez, a veterinarian
and accomplished runner, started a special
tradition when he carried the torch for the
1980 Winter Olympics through Westport
and Elizabethtown. Running up and over
Adirondack “hills” became the foundation
for a beloved, local Adirondack running
event, the Doc Lopez Run for Health. Today,
his daughter, Sue, carries on the tradition
as race director. Though the race route and
charity have changed since it was first held
in 1980, the event has always been about
inspiring people to get outdoors and run
for a good cause. Check out: ech.org/doclopez-run.
On Saturday, May 6, the Joan Nicole
Prince Home “Still Human” 5K Run &
1-Mile Walk at Schenectady’s Central Park,
supports those most in need at the end of
life at the Joan Nicole Prince Home in Scotia.
All proceeds benefit the care residence for
terminally ill patients in need of a home in
their final days at no charge. Register to run/
walk or simply to support their very worthy
services. Visit: joannicoleprincehome.org.
Also, on Saturday, the 16th annual CCRC
5K Run/Walk & BBQ in Clifton Park runs on
a relatively flat quiet neighborhood course,
around Clifton Commons, and back. This
3pm event has a convenient afternoon start.
It promotes well-being and healthy lifestyles
in the community with a USATF sanctioned
5K race, two-person family team competition,
and 1K Kids’ Race at 4pm. Immediately
following, there’s an included BBQ chicken
dinner, plus a huge prize drawing for all.
It’s chip-timed by Underdog Race timing
and proceeds benefit Under the Woods
Foundation. Visit: itsyourrace.com.
Paddlesport Racing
Try This Exciting, Low-Impact Sport
By Ed Greiner
When the subject of canoe and kayak racing comes up
in casual conversation, the usual response is, “You’re
kidding. You actually race those things?” The incredulity is
common.
Some people get involved with paddlesport racing in a
logical manner. They start with a short, fun race after having
had some instruction in technique and gear. Others jump in
blindly, starting with an ultramarathon, and no idea what
they are in for. The latter way was mine.
Many years ago, a coworker asked if I wanted to be his
partner in the Adirondack Canoe Classic, the 90-miler, threeday
event that crosses the Adirondack Park from Old Forge
to Saranac Lake. After being egged on by a third coworker, I
agreed. The rest, as they say, is history.
Paddlesport racing in upstate New York has opportunities
for nearly everyone. There are race classes for canoes, kayaks,
stand-up paddleboards, and guideboats. There are also
divisions within those classes for hulls of different length,
shape and weight, as well as age and gender divisions for the
paddlers. Paddling is an excellent choice for those looking for
a low impact, aerobic sport, and the participants are a very
welcoming and supportive group. They encourage and cheer
for all levels of participants from novices to old pros.
Canoes used to be the most popular craft to race, but
kayaks have become more numerous in recent years. SUPs
are seen at some races and organizers are encouraging their
inclusion at all venues. They are more popular to race in other
regions. I have heard of as many as 150 SUPs in one race in
Maryland.
Here in northeastern New York, there are three regional
organizations dedicated to racing in the sport.
■ St. Lawrence Valley Paddlers, headquartered in Canton:
slvpaddlers.org.
■ Northern New York Paddlers (part of Schenectady
Wintersports Club), in the Capital-Saratoga Region:
swcweb.org.
■ Northern Forest Canoe Trail, covering the Adirondack
region and more: northernforestcanoetrail.org.
The New York Paddlesports Racing Association sets standards
for boat types, classes and age groups. NYPRA also
compiles the race calendar for the entire state: nypra.org.
St. Lawrence Valley Paddlers’ two biggest events are the
Canton Canoe Weekend and the Madrid Canoe Regatta. The
61st annual Canton Canoe Weekend is on May 5-7 this year,
which draws as many as 300 paddlers to the Grasse and Little
rivers, including some of the best racers in North America.
For Canton, visit: cantoncanoeweekend.org. The Madrid
Canoe Regatta is on June 10-11 on the Grasse River. Both
events are based in St. Lawrence County and offer recreational,
amateur and pro races. For Madrid, go to: slvpaddlers.org.
Northern New York Paddler’s races are all held on the
Mohawk River/Erie Canal. The race season starts with the
Towpath Regatta on Thursday, June 15. It starts and finishes
at Gateway Landing, on the ramp to SUNY Schenectady. It is
a fun 4.5-mile race starting at 6:30pm. Registration begins at
5:30pm and there’s no entry fee.
NNYP’s second race is the Electric City Regatta which will
take place on Saturday, July 8 at Erie Canalway’s Lock 9 in
Glenville. The premier event is an 11-mile race. There will also
be a three-mile recreational race and a one-mile fun race/
paddle. Registration is from 8:30-9:45am. The first boat start
is 10am. The registration fee is $25 for adults and $5 for youth
paddlers. The next day, July 9, is the Barge Chaser at Kiwanis
Park in Rotterdam. Once again, there will be a three-mile recreational
race/paddle and a 10-mile event for more experienced
paddlers. Registration is from 9-9:45am. The race starts
all of NNYP’s races, online preregistration is encouraged. For
the schedule and registration, visit: nypra.org.
The Northern Forest Canoe Trail organization took over
much of the paddlesport racing scene in the Adirondacks a
few years ago. Their racing season, which includes canoes,
kayaks, SUPs and guideboats, starts with ‘Round the
Mountain at Lower Saranac Lake on Saturday, May 13, which
is the unofficial kickoff event of the Adirondack paddling
season. The finish line is on Lake Flower in Saranac Lake so
racers are encouraged to do a pre-race car shuttle. Paddlers
head west on Lower Saranac Lake to mouth of the Saranac
River, then do a short carry around the lower locks, then to
Oseetah Lake and ending at Lake Flower – a race distance of
10.5 miles.
If you’d like to improve your skills, check out the
Adirondack Paddling Symposium, which will be in Saranac
Lake on Friday-Sunday, June 16-19. Now hosted by NFCT,
it’s a comprehensive weekend of paddling instruction offering
beginner and intermediate course tracks for kayaks, pack
boats, SUPs and canoes. To learn more, go to: adirondackpaddlingsymposium.com.
The Adirondack Canoe Classic – known as the 90-Miler –
is an Adirondack tradition that dates back over three decades,
and is on Friday-Sunday, Sept. 8-10. The classic takes paddlers
from Old Forge to Saranac Lake, the first 90 miles of
the Northern Forest Canoe Trail, which extends 740 miles
on historic waterways to Fort Kent, Me. The 90-Miler online
registration begins July 1.
The Long Lake Long Boat Regatta will take place on
Saturday, Sept. 23, closing out the Adirondack Race Series.
Events include North American voyageur canoe championships,
Adirondack kayak championship, Northeastern
College Cup race. The 10-mile course is a figure-eight, beginning
and ending at the Long Lake Public Beach. They have
all NYPRA classes and a fun “Anything Goes” category. For
more info on the NFCT racing season, go to: northernforestcanoetrail.org.
For something different, The Great Brant Lake Canoe
Race is on Saturday, August 12. Experience a beautiful
Adirondack lake, in a fun and exciting six-mile race that takes
paddlers down the length of Brant’s picturesque shores into a
channel, and finishing on the Mill Pond at the Horicon Town
Beach. There will be post-race music, awards, demos, SUP
yoga, voyageur canoe tours, and a kids’ race. Visit: northwarrencanoe.com.
There are other races throughout the state not covered
by the regional organizations. For information, they can be
found here: nypra.org.
Getting back to Northern New York Paddlers in the Capital
Region, we also offer a recreational and instructional paddling
program at Kiwanis Park on the Mohawk River/Erie Canal in
Rotterdam on Mondays starting on May 1. There are a few
canoes and kayaks to lend to participants, but we encourage
participants to bring their own boats if you have them.
NNYP also puts on weekly time trials for training and fitness
at Aqueduct Park on the Mohawk River/Erie Canal in
Niskayuna. This is a 3.6-mile timed paddle, the purpose of
which is to track your progress through the year, as well as
to see how different factors affect overall time. There is no
entry fee for these two programs and the public is welcome.
To learn more, visit: swcweb.org.
Ed Greiner (egreiner1@yahoo.com) lives in Esperance
and is the treasurer for New York Paddlesports Racing
Association. He has been paddlesport racing for many
years, race directs the Electric City Regatta, and is also
active in Northern New York Paddlers.

By Bill Ingersoll
The Hoffman Notch Wilderness is a perfect example of
how true wildness can sometimes be hidden in plain
sight. Although it directly abuts an interstate highway,
and although its size is rather middling, solitude and
natural beauty abound. In other words, Hoffman Notch is
Adirondack wilderness at its best – despite its accessibility.
Many people have seen this wilderness, whether they are
aware of it or not – but few can say they know the landscape on
an intimate basis. Ever since I-87 (known as the Adirondack
Northway) opened in 1967, the Blue Ridge Range has been
adorning roadside vistas for thousands of drivers every day.
It is a place that seems so close to “civilization” that it can
hardly be considered remote, by any standard.
Indeed, several of its most popular destinations are barely
a mile from the starting point, and the area’s most iconic
scenery can be consumed with minimal effort. This makes
Hoffman Notch somewhat “inside-out” compared to most
of the other protected areas in the Adirondacks, which hold
their best scenic secrets deep within their boundaries. It also
might partially explain why an area so accessible is so little
known to the general public, aside from these few peripheral
treasures.
The state-maintained trail network in this wilderness is
somewhat limited, but adequate given the level of interest.
The marked trails to Bailey Pond, Big Pond, and Severance
Hill are all short and easy – and therefore well used. The longer
trail past Big Marsh within Hoffman Notch is only moderately
used, and the trail between Big Pond and Trout Brook
sees hardly any foot traffic at all.
Limited though it may be, the Hoffman Notch Wilderness
trail system will soon expand. A new trail over Jones Hill is
already partly constructed (as of 2023); this will eventually
create a through-route from Big Pond to Dirgylot Hill, by
way of North Pond and Platt Brook. Jones Hill is likely the
place from which the famous 19th century American artist
Thomas Cole sketched Hoffman Mountain in 1838, and its
view remains first-rate.
And this new trail will likely become part of the North
Country National Scenic Trail, which is slated to pass through
the southern part of the wilderness.
Until that trail is opened – I’ve already previewed it, and
it will be a stunner – Big Pond remains an excellent introduction
to the Hoffman Notch area. This article describes the
main trail, but with a little bit of outdoor sleuthing experienced
explorers can tack on some excellent side trips.
GETTING THERE
Big Pond, Jones Hill and More
This entrance to the Hoffman Notch Wilderness is located just
a few miles west of Schroon Lake. From Northway (I-87) Exit
28, drive south on US Route 9 through the village to Hoffman
Road, a right turn. Hoffman Road crosses the Northway and
climbs into the foothills, eventually reaching the trailhead
2.1 miles from town. It is located on the right, with room for
about two or three cars to park.
THE TRAIL
This trail follows an old woods road and provides an easy
walk, as wilderness hikes go, beginning in a plantation of pine
and ending in a native stand of hemlock. It is a perfect route
for those people looking for a short, easy excursion through
the woods, and the destination pond is a great place for a
picnic or weekend backpacking trip.
The hike begins next to an old cellar hole hidden next to
the parking area. The even-aged pine forest surrounding the
start of the trail suggests that this was once a cleared farm. The
trail leads to a wide bridge across a rather boisterous branch
of Rogers Brook at the foot of a long beaver flow, where you
will find some interesting cascades immediately downstream.
The trail then angles northwest through the rolling terrain
between Big and North ponds. For the duration of this 1.7-
mile hike, you will pass a wide variety of conifers, and so this
is an excellent chance to brush up on your dendrology. White
pine, Scotch pine, cedar, balsam fir, red spruce, and hemlock
all grow beside the trail. Can you identify them?
Just short of an hour, the trail enters a tall hemlock stand
with Big Pond becoming visible to the left. At 1.6 miles, after
rising over and descending a hemlock-clad knoll, you reach
a junction with a side trail bearing left. The blue trail continuing
straight ahead winds into the headwater region of Trout
Brook, but the left trail leads in just 0.1 mile to a well-situated
campsite perched above a pebbly beach. It is the ideal picnic
spot, especially since it faces into the sun and overlooks most
of this wild pond.
SIDE TRIPS
The hike to Big Pond is fine for people who enjoy easy hikes
or are short for time, but a quick glance at a map shows other
options exist nearby as well.
The new section of the North Country
National Scenic Trail leading over Jones
Hill is mostly cut and ready to explore,
though as of this writing it is not signed or
marked. It passes south of North Pond –
with its fine views of Hoffman Mountain
– and then circles through the foothills
to flank Jones Hill from the west. After a
quick climb, the trail-to-be follows the
ridgeline to what has already become a
favorite summit view for local hikers.
Backing up to the beaver flow on the
unnamed Rogers Brook tributary, you
can bushwhack along the north bank
to glimpse one of the most active heron
rookeries in the area. And if you are persistent
enough to circumvent all these
wetlands, the south shore of Big Pond
features a hidden campsite with photogenic
views of Hoffman and its range
of fellow mountains. Just beware of ticks
lurking in the leaf litter.
ATHLETE PROFILE
Jessica Miller
By Jack Rightmyer
Jessica Miller was destined to be a ski patroller. Her
mom’s parents were ski patrollers. Her parents
were both ski patrollers, and they actually first met
on a little mountain outside of Buffalo named Kissing
Bridge. She has an uncle who still patrols. “Growing
up I watched my dad serve in leadership roles for ski
patrol, and run clinics to train patrollers in toboggan
handling, which is how we get injured skiers off
the mountain,” Jessie said, from her home in Burnt
Hills. “When I graduated from college, I decided to
become a ski patroller where my parents patrolled at
Elk Mountain in Pennsylvania.”
She quickly got involved in the same program her dad
used to teach; Outdoor Emergency Transportation, involving
skiing and toboggan handling. She patrolled for six years at
Elk Mountain and for the last 10 years at Gore Mountain after
she and her husband moved to Burnt Hills. Jessie is a volunteer,
and usually patrols two days a week. “I am fortunate to
have flexibility in my day job, when my daughters were born,
I reduced my time commitment. Now that they are bigger, I
use some of that time to patrol and to ski. As a family, we are
on the mountain every weekend all winter.”
On March 18th she accomplished something that no one
has done in the last 27 years, she completed the National Ski
Patrol’s Certified program at Killington Resort in one weekend.
The program includes modules in skiing, toboggan handling,
first aid, lift evacuation, low angle rescue, avalanche,
and outdoor risk management.
“The program was established in 1968,” Jessie said, “and
I’m Certified Member #860. It’s a national program, and only
26 women have completed it. The test is offered once a year.
You are allowed three years to complete all the modules, and
it’s designed to test you and strip you down to your core. The
examiners want to see how you can handle yourself when
you’re tired. Emergencies happen at the least convenient
times, not when we are fresh.”
Jessie said she was very committed to training. “It really
demands a lot of time, and that you ask for help. You can’t
do this alone; it takes a community. Many certified members
spent time training with me this season, I’m grateful for their
support and for sharing their knowledge.”
Her dad suffered from ALS and passed away when she
was 18 years old. “My dad loved patrolling. I was fortunate to
become a ski patroller at Elk Mountain where he had trained
so many of the ski patrollers who would eventually become
my friends. They took me under their wing. Ski patrolling has
been a way for me to get to know my dad as an adult. We are
both cut from the same cloth. He loved mentoring patrollers,
and I also love to do that.”
She has always loved the tremendous community in the
world of patrolling. “Many of my strongest friendships and
connections have been built through the shared passions
AGE: 39
FAMILY: Husband, Sam Miller; Daughters,
Claire, 10, and Stella, 8
RESIDENCE: Burnt Hills
PROFESSION: Contract Specialist, State
University of New York
VOLUNTEER: Ski Patroller, Gore Mountain
Outdoor Emergency Transportation
Program Regional Advisor, National Ski
Patrol Mentor, Saratoga Shredders
SPORTS: Alpine Skiing, Mountain Biking,
Hiking, Triathlon
of patrolling, helping people
in need on the mountain and
teaching the skills of good
patrolling. Patrollers are kind
souls who want to help people.
When someone is hurt,
it’s a patroller that will get
you down. We need to have
enough medical knowledge
to deal with a serious injury
on the hill, with limited medical
resources. We also need to
know how to extricate an injured skier and safely bring them
down in a toboggan.”
Patrolling can be very challenging. “The days can be long.
Helping people who were seriously injured can challenge
you both mentally and physically in trying to figure out how
to get them down the mountain safely.”
Some of her favorite days as a patroller are when she’s
used her knowledge to teach others. For the past four years
she has served as the Regional Advisor for the National Ski
Patrol Outdoor Emergency Transportation Program where
she has taught numerous clinics and worked as a trainer evaluator.
“I especially love teaching our women’s programs. It
inspires me to see the energy and excitement when women
embrace their potential, that they can do extraordinary
things. We had a two-day women’s program this winter at
Gore, and it was wonderful to see these patrollers run toboggans
and grow.”
She has two young daughters, aged eight and ten, who
love to ski as much as she does. “They are good little ski buddies.
They enjoy being out on the mountain. My husband and
I invested a lot of time when they were little bringing them
on long trips to the mountain sometimes only for a couple
of runs. They’re old enough now where they can sweep the
mountain with me after their race program ends. My oldest
thinks that’s the coolest thing in the world.”
What Jessie loves about skiing is that it’s one of those
sports that is a never-ending pursuit in trying to become better.
“When you’ve mastered one level you can always take
your skill to another level of terrain. You can also always work
▲▲ DELTA LAKE TRIATHLON NEAR ROME, 2019.
▲ WOMEN’S CLINIC, GORE MOUNTAIN PATROLLER SCHOOL.
on trying to smooth out your skiing. It’s a sport that allows
you to keep learning.”
Jessie is also a mentor with Saratoga Shredders, a youth
mountain bike program with a mission to get more kids on
bikes. “In the summer and fall we love to mountain bike as
a family. We also hike and go camping. I do the occasional
sprint distance triathlon. We are a family that loves to move
and be outdoors.”
Like many of us, she has often heard people complain
about the long cold winters we have in upstate New York.
“Until you actually get outside, you never really know what
the day is like. Many times, we’ve driven to Gore thinking the
conditions would be too cold or the snow would be atrocious,
only to get on the mountain and find out what a great day it
is to ski. There is so much beauty around us especially in the
winter. I don’t understand hibernating when it gets cold out.
I’m so happy that my kids love winter as much as I do.”
Jack Rightmyer (jackxc@nycap.rr.com) of Burnt Hills was
a longtime cross-country coach at Bethlehem High School
and today is an Adjunct English Professor at Siena College.
He has written two books “A Funny Thing About Teaching”
and “It’s Not About Winning.”

summer starting with their exclusive Women’s
Weekend on Friday-Sunday, June 23-25, based out of
the Saranac Waterfront Lodge. It includes two days of
guided rides and abundant chances for fine dining,
making new friends, and exploring all the village of
Saranac Lake has to offer. New this year is available
massage therapy to add to your post-ride experience.
BIKE ADK events support local charities, and this year
proceeds will be donated to Play ADK, a nonprofit
creating a world-class children’s museum and family
resource center in Saranac Lake. Register now as it’s
almost sold out. Check out: bikeadirondacks.com.
On Sunday, June 25, the Rapid River Fondo near
Warrensburg, benefits Adirondack Cycling Advocates,
which supports safe cycling in Warren County and the
surrounding area. Organized by Adirondack Multi-
Sport Club, the Fondo features rides of 33, 48, and
62 miles for all abilities, along some of the southern
Adirondacks most picturesque waterways. The bike
rides all feature a finish or rest stop at The Hub in Brant
Lake, offering a variety of food, drink, and mechanical
services for riders. Visit: bikereg.com.
On Saturday, May 13, Adirondack Multi-Sport will
also host a Women’s Cycling Clinic & Group Ride in
Glens Falls to help women riders with four workshops:
wellness, yoga for cyclists, group riding etiquette, how
to change a tire. There will also be a group ride with
multi-pace options. Go to: bikereg.com.
The next Bike Adirondacks event of the season is
the Great Camp Sagamore Experience, based out of
the famous great camp in Raquette Lake. Two fourday
sessions offer road rides on Sunday, July 9-12,
and a gravel focus on Sunday-Wednesday, August
13-16. Both sessions blend cycling with a modern
mini-vacation that provides you with a true connection
to the landscape and history of this special place
in the heart of the Adirondacks, that’s also a National
Historic Landmark. Morning guided rides transition
to afternoons that are all about camp exploration and
relaxation. Paddle a canoe, take a hike, or even bowl
a line in the camp’s bowling alley! Check out: bikeadirondacks.com.
On Sunday, July 16, the Ride for the River Bike,
also organized by Bike Adirondacks supports the
Ausable River Association (ausableriver.org) in their
efforts to protect the river’s watershed. Featuring
two beautifully scenic routes with distances of 30 or
43-miles, “R4tR” also hosts a 20-mile “Tailgater” group
ride on Saturday, July 15 for those who’d like to come
into town a day or two early to make it a weekend. The
Sunday main event features two fully supported
routes, a finish line BBQ featuring live music, and an
event gift. Visit: bikeadirondacks.com.
Also on July 16, the new North Winds Gravel
Classic starting in Rodman, is a timed-event on the
beautifully pristine unpaved roads set in the remote
scenic wilderness of the Tug Hill Plateau. This inaugural
event presented by the Adirondack Foothills
Cycling Club (adkfoothillscyclingclub.org) promises
to be a new favorite, with routes of 40, 65, and 90 miles
to suit riders of all capabilities and interest. The name
derives from the constant winds that travel across Lake
Ontario, making the area perfect for sustainable energy
generation through windmills. Included in registration
is a swag item and the festive after-party you
would expect, complete with food, vendors, and live
music from the appropriately named Loose Gravel
Band. Go to: bikereg.com.
Adirondack Foothills is also holding the North
Country Short Track Mountain Bike Series of four
races on Sundays, from July 23 to August 20. Races 1
and 2 will take place at Osceola Ski & Sport Resort in
Camden on July 23 and August 6, and races 3 and 4
will be at Oswegatchie Education Center in Croghan
on August 13 and 20. Short track racing means great
opportunities for racers and spectators as riders do
multiple loops of a closed circuit. Though there are two
races at each location, there will be different courses
for each race. Check out: bikereg.com.
Dave Kraus (dbkgrafik@gmail.com) is a longtime
