COLLEGE NEWS
DEAN’S MESSAGE
The College of Business at Tennessee Tech is experiencing some very exciting and challenging times. This past year, we
received two noteworthy recognitions for our college:
• We were included in The Princeton Review publication, The 237 Best Business Schools in the World.
• Our Distance MBA program was ranked #7 in the nation by geteducated.com as a “Best Buy” for on-line MBA programs.
In this issue of the Year in Review, we have focused on the many examples of leadership exhibited by our students,
faculty, alumni, and friends of the college. One story in this issue is a first-hand report from one of our current Distance MBA
students, Susan Williams. As she evaluated her own situation at O’Charley’s (where she was Vice President of Training), she
knew an MBA would provide a strong foundation for leadership advancement. I know you’ll enjoy the other examples of
leadership evidenced by our students, by faculty member Tom Timmerman, by our BusinessMedia Center’s help in reviving a
Katrina-devastated Southern University at New Orleans, and by the funding of renovation efforts in Johnson Hall.
This spring, we will receive an accreditation visit from a representative team of AACSB International: The Association to
Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Tennessee Tech’s College of Business was first accredited by AACSB in 1978, and
currently we are one of only 165 business schools in the world that has accreditations of its undergraduate, MBA, and
accounting programs. We were a good business school in 1978; we are an even better business school now; and we are committed
to becoming even better in the future. We value very highly the AACSB stamp of excellence and pledge to maintain
that standard for our students and alumni. In return, we hope we can rely on you to continue the support you have
generously provided in the past.
BUSINESS STUDENTS LEADING THE CAMPUS!
The past year’s Student Government Association (SGA) president was Craft Hayes, a junior
management major from Hendersonville. As the elected leader of the Tech student body, Craft
indicates that last year’s role allowed him “to put into practice some of the communication and leadership
skills we have learned about in our courses.” Craft was preceded as SGA president by
business student Philip Jackson and will be followed in 2006-07 by business student John Boots. “It’s great to
see our college’s students recognize the need to respond to student concerns by stepping up to serve in
leadership roles so early in their careers,” says Dean Bob Niebuhr. “Three years in a row is a real tribute to our
college’s students.”
Leadership is all about energizing others towards accomplishing more than the ordinary. While there are
aspects of leadership that can be taught, putting that knowledge to use is the key ingredient in separating
effective leaders from ineffective leaders. Probably the greatest opportunity for leadership development for
a student on campus comes from serving as president of the student body. Jimmy Geer, 1960-61 student
body president who retired as Assistant Director of FBI and later as Director of Security Worldwide for
DuPont, indicates that “my opportunity to serve as Associated Student Body President had a profound impact
on my life. Perhaps the single most important thing I brought away from those experiences was an
enhanced skill in dealing with and influencing people. In my career, I had the opportunity to deal
successfully with individuals at the highest levels or our national government and in the board rooms of
industry. The skills that enabled me to do so were developed and honed at Tennessee Tech.”
As student body presidents, a number of our college’s future alumni were able to test their skills on campus.
John Lynn, who now lives in Virginia Beach, was an accounting major and the 1962-63 SGA President. He
says, “I certainly had not anticipated how many bosses I would have to please . . . I still recall when we dared
to ask for changes in the women’s curfew hours (I lost!)” Robert Baird, finance graduate and 1977-78 SGA
president, is now an Executive Vice President for SunTrust Bank, East Tennessee. He states, “Being SGA
president helped me realize I could deal in the ‘adult’ world because of my interface with the university and
the surrounding community.” Similarly, Allen Ward, 1986-87 SGA president and now Senior Associate Dean
of Students at Brown University, indicated that the Tech experience provided “an excellent laboratory to learn
about working with other people and the art of negotiation.”
Tech has had six female student body presidents, the first in 1945 being the late Margaret Hale who became
the future wife of Tech president Wallace Prescott. Margaret Bahou, an Information Systems major, was SGA
president in 1991-92. As a female leader of Tech’s campus, Margaret states that it “was one of the best times
of my life. The freedom to achieve on my terms and fail on those same terms made me a more mature
individual.”
Being a campus leader not only provided Ray Slate, SGA president in 1958-59, the “opportunity to interact
with people of varied backgrounds,” it also gave him a commitment to Tech that continues to this day.
Ray has been very active with the TTU National Alumni Association and served as its president in 1994-95.
Dean Bob Niebuhr states that “with 21 student body presidents having been business majors, our college
has a rich history in seeing that our students develop their leadership skills while they are still a part of us here
on campus. It is most rewarding to see them succeed after they leave the campus.”
These student body presidents talk about their leadership efforts at Tech - John Boots (2006-07),
Allen Ray (1969-70), and Craft Hayes (2005-06).
UTONOMY
Tom Timmerman’s students often realize just how valuable his teaching is when they put what
they learned into practice on internship assignments or full-time jobs. “I teach Human Resource
Management and Organizational Behavior. As my own children grow up, I’m becoming more
convinced that there are universal principles that people can use to bring out the best in others
(whether it’s an employee, a boss, a spouse, or a child). My 8 year old (TJ) is now mowing most of our 1acre
yard by himself. Not because I make him do it, but because he feels a sense of accomplishment when
he does it. My 4 year old (Sarah)
has figured out how to surf the
Internet and find her favorite
online games. This has happened
because she has the freedom to
explore. The academic research
shows that accomplishment,
appreciation, and autonomy also
bring out the best in employees.”
Dr. Timmerman has received
numerous faculty honors. One
such award was for his innovative
uses of technology that was
presented at the Tennessee
Board of Regents’ Annual
Distance Learning Conference.
Timmerman, an associate
professor of management, is
considered a pioneer in distance
education programs. He also is a
past recipient of the college’s
Dr. Tom Timmerman with wife Bethany, Catherine, TJ, and Sarah
faculty awards for teaching and overall performance. Most recently, this past year Timmerman received
the university’s Outstanding Faculty Award for Teaching.
Dean Bob Niebuhr states, “Tom is an outstanding contributor to the success of our college and his
dedication to excellence is an example to all of us. He not only teaches leadership in his courses, he
evidences it both in his work and in the community. Given our teaching responsibilities, it is hard for our
faculty to do research at the highest level, but this year Tom had a paper accepted in the #1 journal in the
world for his discipline.” Dr. Timmerman earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Furman
University and a doctorate in organizational behavior from Tulane University.
Increasing My Potential
by Susan Williams
“ Two standard deviations from what?” As I sat in the
board room in a discussion of the measurement of
guest satisfaction, it was clear that in order to be a
successful training professional, I had some learning to do.
Working for O’Charley’s Inc. for the past fifteen years
has presented a number of growth challenges for me.
Through the years, I have learned that whoever has the
best talent wins, and in order to perpetuate a culture of
accountability, one must first lead by example.
Immersed in what I would call my “dream job” of overseeing
the company’s training for more than 250 restaurants,
I realized I needed to have a better understanding
of the language of the “propeller-heads” (IT folks), “beancounters”
(accountants) and “dream streeters” (company
executives).
Driving down the interstate one day, my answer came like a big, purple light bulb in the sky, in the form
of a billboard for the Tennessee Tech University Distance MBA program. I had entertained thoughts of
returning to school, but felt limited by a demanding workload and hectic travel schedule. This purple vision
triggered events that resulted in my pursuit of
an MBA.
The Distance MBA has grown from
zero to over 150 students in just
4 years, with professionals in the
program from such companies as
BellSouth, TVA, Nissan, HCA, and
Federal Express. The 100%
distance program will have 7
different concentrations by the
end of this coming year and
enrollment should exceed 200.
My experience with the distance MBA program
has been one of endurance and enrichment.
The program has also afforded me deeper insight
into the world of business outside of human
resources, and has allowed me to feel more
empowered to contribute at a higher level. The
flexibility of a distance program allows me to
maintain the demands of my job in a very competitive
industry. Finally, one additional benefit
of the program is there is still time to do what I
love most, spending time with family and friends,
and an occasional trip to the spa.
And, yes, I do now know what “two standard
deviations from the mean” represents.
College of Business leads effort
to modernize classrooms
by Tracey LeFevre
TTU’s College of Business has started a renovation effort of its facilities in Johnson Hall by establishing a
special fund for donors. The Louis and Virginia Johnson Fund for Excellence has already brought in a total of
more than $1 million in gifts or pledges. Six rooms have been renovated and another seven planned over the
next three years. Louis Johnson was the founding dean of the college and served the university for more than
40 years.
Classroom before
renovation
Classroom after
renovation
“Since its construction in the late
1960s and early 1970s, the years
have begun to take their toll on
Johnson Hall,” said Dean Bob
Niebuhr, “and state funds were just
not being provided to keep our
facilities up-to-date.” The idea for a
long-term renovation project originated
a few years ago with a visit
by Pat Quillen, TTU’s College of
Business development director, to
the Cookeville home of Johnson,
just prior to the former dean’s
death.
“Pat told me that Louis turned to
him and said, ‘Pat, take care of my
building,’” Niebuhr said. “That conversation
really was the start of our
efforts to modernize and renovate
Johnson Hall.” The creation of the
Tommy Lynn Seminar Suite in
Johnson Hall officially launched the
College of Business renovation
effort, and the Virginia W. Plummer
Reception Room soon followed.
Other Johnson Hall modernizations
include two classrooms, one
named in honor of Charles
Hawkins of Chattanooga and the
other named for Christine Gilliam
Burks, mother of local businessman
Horace Burks and the late state Sen.
The Tom Orton Conference Room
Tommy Burks; a conference room named for Tom Orton of Chattanooga; and the Kraft CPA’s classroom,
funded by a gift from the Kraft public accounting firm in Nashville.
An auditorium honoring 1953 business graduate and 41-year banking professional Don N. Ervin is under
construction. This project will convert an “instructional-unfriendly” auditorium into a state-of-the art teaching
facility.
Other planned projects in Johnson Hall include the modernization of two additional classrooms, a conference
room, an MBA study lounge and an administrative suite, with pledges or gifts respectively from Jimmie Mackie,
Claire and John Johnson in honor of Virginia Johnson, the McLamore Family Foundation in honor of James W.
McLamore, Tom Neal, and Emily S. Bedford.
Representatives of Cookeville’s SunTrust Bank and State Farm Insurance agency have also joined forces to
make a pledge for the creation of the Eagle Financial Investments Center, a trading room simulation to give
students a real-time glimpse of investing in the stock market. A flat-screen video messaging system for the
public areas throughout Johnson Hall has been provided by a donation from John and Minnie Lou Clark.
Although all facilities are renovated for their specific use, such updated and modernized classrooms typically
feature the latest in instructional technology - including Internet computer capabilities, ceiling-mounted data
projectors, VCR/DVD units, instructors’ stations and sound systems - as well as new wall coverings, carpet,
enhanced lighting and comfortable seating.
BusinessMedia Center
assists rebuilding efforts
after Katrina
by Tracey LeFevre
Think of devastation and the first image that
may come to mind is a phoenix rising from the
ashes, but for Southern University of New
Orleans, it’s a pelican rising from the floodwaters of
Hurricane Katrina. That image is part of the university’s
new “SUNO Rising!” theme created by our college’s
BusinessMedia Center.
After the hurricane devastated the campus of this
historically black university - now being housed in
FEMA trailers - its administrators decided to market
aggressively an online degree program to help
increase its enrollment. They ultimately approached
TTU’s BusinessMedia Center to assist with that mission,
said Director Kevin Liska, because the BMC has
been active in marketing Tennessee’s Regents Online
Degree Program.
“We redesigned SUNO’s web site to communicate
that it’s a real place, with real people, and still offers a
viable option for getting an education,” Liska said.
One innovative feature is a searchable database of
video testimonials from faculty, staff and students. A
search for ‘housing,’ for instance, results in a video
message from SUNO’s director of residential life.
Other promotional approaches included the production
of numerous external marketing materials
including brochures, informational CD-ROMs, posters,
billboards, Internet advertisements and direct mailings
to SUNO alumni, New Orleans clergy and others.
A new online course, “Preserving the Historical
Heritage of SUNO: Pre- and Post-Katrina,” was also
created to give alumni a firsthand experience of
online learning. “The success of this project involved
two distinct universities being able to work together,”
Liska said. “Because we’ve been able to do this, the
lives of every SUNO student will be changed forever.”
Latest update on SUNO: Enrollment for this
Fall semester increased to 2500 students
from the 2006 Spring enrollment of 2000.
SUNO administrators provided strong
appreciation for TTU’s help in rebuilding
their student population.
JIMMY AND EMILY
BEDFORD
by Judy Hees
As Master Distiller for the Jack Daniel Distillery in
Lynchburg, TN, Jimmy Bedford has the chief
responsibility for overseeing the entire whiskeymaking
process of milling, yeasting,
fermentation, distillation, and one of the more important
parts, tasting! Only five others have held the
position of Master Distiller at Jack Daniel’s during its
130-year history. In addition to his duties in Lynchburg,
Jimmy serves as the world ambassador for the distillery,
talking with consumers, distributors, retailers, wait staff
and media about the distillery and the process of making
Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey. In Spring, 2006,
Jimmy returned to campus for two days as part of the
college’s Distinguished Lecture Series. Jimmy talked to
our students about his career and his current responsibilities.
Despite the notoriety, he says, “I remind myself
every day that there are millions of people the world
over counting on me to do my job right.”
Jimmy grew up on a farm only two miles from Lynchburg, came to Tech, and graduated in 1962 from the
College of Agriculture. He met his wife, Emily (Gregory) who was a Tech accounting major from Carthage. Emily
was best friends with Sue Bedford and told Sue that there was someone on campus that looked just like her
and she really wanted to meet him. It turns out that Jimmy was Sue’s brother, introductions were made, and
the rest is history. Jimmy and Emily were married on September 26, 1964, and just celebrated their 42nd
anniversary. Emily has worked at Arnold Air Force Base in Tullahoma since 1965 and realized early on that with
Jimmy traveling around the world, it suited her just fine to have her own career at Arnold. Jimmy and Emily
have one daughter, Alice Pleming, who teaches fourth grade at Norfolk Academy in Norfolk, VA.
In honor of his wife,
Jimmy recently provided
the college with a gift to
name the administrative offices
of our Student Success Center as the
“Emily S. Bedford Administrative Suite.”
AN OUTSTANDING YEAR
by Lelia Gibson
FOR STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS
Many alumni look back fondly of the time
they spent involved in student organizations
at TTU. While we cannot share all of
our organizations’ successes for this past year, we
would like to highlight the accomplishments of a
few of them.
Beta Alpha Psi - This
accounting honorary cohosted
the “Meet the
Firms” event that attracted
over 30 companies to
recruit our students for
internships and full-time
jobs. In addition, the
members completed
eight hours of training
with an IRS agent to participate
in the Volunteer
Income Tax Assistance
program (VISTA) for free
assistance to low income,
elderly, limited English
proficient or disabled
individuals. Because of
these efforts, TTU’s chapter
was one of 167 to be
awarded “Superior
Chapter” status by the
National Office.
Society for Human
Resource Management
(SHRM) - In April, two
members of the SHRM student chapter competed at
the Southeast Regional HR Games competition held
in Knoxville. Sixteen teams from around the southeast
competed in a tournament that tested their
knowledge of human resource management. TTU
was the only school competing for the first time so
we were proud of our 13th place finish. The purpose
of the HR Games is to promote professional
certification, to help prepare students for the certification
exam, and to promote interaction among
professionals, students, and faculty.
Marketing Club - Our
students represented
themselves well at this
year’s International
American Marketing
Association (IAMA)
Collegiate Conference in
Orlando. The club
received awards for excellence
in chapter planning
and communications and
was also selected as a
finalist for the O. Karl
Mann Web Site Award,
named for the late Karl
Mann, Tech professor of
marketing.
International Case
Competition - In February
TTU students represented
the college in the 2006
Network of International
Business Schools’
International Case
Competition Finals held in
NIBS Case Team members: Michel Panzeri, Reanna Gillen,
Oslo, Norway. In addition
Barbara Tomaszek, and Matthew Burrows
to TTU, final round teams
represented schools from Belgium, Canada, Finland,
Ireland, and Norway. Students were presented each
day with a complex business problem, and then
they presented their solution to a panel of judges.
The only two losses the Tech team received were
from the eventual winner and second place team.
Debbie Pickett is the secretary for the Student Success Center (formally known as Basic
Business). Debbie has been a friend, guide, and inspiration to many past students. She grew
up in southeastern Missouri and graduated from Freed-Hardeman College with an Associate
of Arts in Business Administration. When Debbie started working for the University in 1992 she started
to think seriously about getting her bachelor’s degree in business. Debbie states that “I’ve felt that
the entire college has been rooting for me as I’ve made my way through this degree.”
When I asked Debbie how she did it, she told me her secret. “My biggest supporter has been my
husband, Lee. He has been behind me all the way, has shared my successes with me, and commiserated
with me when I was stressed about the pressures of full time employment while working on
a degree. Our daughter, Lauren, has also cheered me on, as I have done for her. We graduated
together this summer and felt great pride in each other’s accomplishments.” The support from her
family, husband and daughters, gave her the strength to continue through the challenges of being a
non-traditional student.
Debbie also said that once she returned to the classroom that she had a new connection with the
students. She felt a sense of camaraderie with them. Debbie adds that “I have always enjoyed gaining
knowledge. I hope that my learning experiences can continue.”
Debbie, many after you will look to you as an example of integrity, dedication, and success.
By making the most of yourself, you are giving back to others. Stand proud and tall as we celebrate
you and all you have accomplished. Congratulations from the College of Business!
COLLEGE-WIDE PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES
The Student Success Center has created a “Student to
Career” initiative to develop professional skills that
will complement our students’ academic preparation.
Fifty-eight of our students attended “The
Polished Professional,” a four-session development
seminar series designed by the Ziglar Performance
Group. The Center also coordinated free
BusinessWeek subscriptions for upperclassmen and
MBA students.
The College partnered for the eleventh consecutive
year with the Tennessee Valley Authority and United
States Department of Agriculture Rural Development
to host and conduct the annual statewide Rural
Development Conference with almost 500 in attendance.
The Distance MBA program continued to grow, with
almost 150 working professionals enrolled in DMBA
classes. The format has allowed us to offer a wider
range of electives than were available in the traditional
campus format. The first course in the Risk
Management & Insurance concentration was offered
in the Spring and additional concentrations are
planned for Performance Management (Six-Sigma)
and Human Resources Management. The Distance
MBA program was ranked by geteducated.com as
College of Business 2005-06 Highlights
the #7 “Best Buy” in the nation on-line MBA programs.
The college was included in the Princeton Review,
2006 issue of The Best 237 Business Schools in the
world. This recognition was based on having quality
programs, students, and faculty, an attainment
that comes from being accredited by AACSB, the
most rigorous credentialing process for business
schools.
A new course was offered in the spring of 2006:
World Cultures and Business, International
Experience. The class, which was designed to
expose students to different cultures, took eight
undergraduate and ten MBA students to Singapore
and Hong Kong over the winter break. Drs. Mark
Stephens and Bob Wood accompanied the students
on the 18-day study-abroad course.
To create better communications, both internally and
externally, the college’s Division of External
Relations produced four Stay Connected (for friends
and alumni) and two Strictly Business (for students);
the e-newsletters contained stories about events
here at the college.
During this year’s Governor’s School for Information
Technology Leadership 36 high school students had
to expand our international initiatives, and to
provide support for faculty development.
Due to a generous donation from 1953 business
alumnus Don Ervin, a major renovation project has
begun for the Johnson Hall auditorium. The auditorium
is being converted to a “state-of-the-art” instructional
facility to accommodate classes. Given the
magnitude of the construction project, work will continue
into the next academic year.
renovate the dean’s conference room in Johnson
Hall. Additionally, the SunTrust Bank Client Contact
Center pledged a gift to purchase a real-time quote
board for the Eagle Financial Investments Center.
