FILIPINO AMERICAN
SYMPHONY
Orchestra
The Filipino American Symphony Orchestra (FASO) is the first and
only Filipino symphony orchestra outside the Philippines. Launched in
2008, FASO takes pride in its members who come from various
professions and have a variety of musical experiences. It is our goal to
cultivate and foster Filipino artistry.
Our diverse programming strives to infuse the classical repertoire with
pop culture while keeping in touch with our unique Filipino culture and
its rich artistic heritage. FASO and its Board of Directors dedicate
themselves to making music and running the orchestra, ensuring its
success for future generations to enjoy and partake in the rich artistic
and cultural traditions of the Philippines. We are committed to the
enrichment of Filipino culture through music by developing and
promoting artists through programs and activities that educate and
enrich the community through collaboration with a variety of local
and visiting artists and composers.
FASO's goal is to cultivate the artistry of Filipino musicians and to
showcase their talent. By opening artistic and cultural borders for
these artists, we aim to educate and enrich diverse communities in
American and the world with our unique Filipino culture and its rich
artistic heritage through them. We accomplish this by fostering growth
in establishing and developing Filipino-American orchestra musicians,
to advance and promote Filipino music, to serve and support the
community, and to provide opportunities to the community to
experience Filipino cultures.

chamber music conductor Christoph Poppen. While in college, Shroder was principal flutist
of the Philippine Youth Orchestra under the baton of Sergio Esmilla Jr. Due to his
impressive academic standing at the University of the Philippines, he was invited to join
the Mu Phi Epsilon International Music Fraternity . This distinguished fraternity was
brought to major Philippine music institutions by National Artist of the Philippines Lucrecia
Kasilag. In 1982, Shroder won the National Music Competition for Young Artists grand
prize at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. He became principal flutist of the Manila
Symphony Orchestra, the oldest symphony orchestra in Asia and where he auditioned and
was hired right after his graduation recital, and the Manila Chamber Orchestra, where he
was a member until immigrating to the United States. In Los Angeles, he was the founding
conductor of the Boyle Heights Youth Symphony. Shroder was also the first Filipino-
American in the symphony, which was founded in 2002.

MUSIC EDUCATION &
OUTREACH PROGRAM
We at the Filipino American Symphony Orchestra believe
music to be a core component of our humanity. Our sense of
being needs music in the same way that our bodies need
food, water and air. It is our greatest hope that our Education
& Outreach Program enrich the lives of the communities that
we serve.
We Filipino Americans have a very rich music tradition and
are very proud of our talent. FASO provides opportunities for
children to learn about our rich music traditions and to help
them develop their own unique identities. We offer children a
chance to reach their full musical potential, and to perform and
share their talent with their communities.
FASO actively seeks out children in underserved
communities. We teach a variety of repertoire: Philippine folk
songs, the Philippine National Anthem, Kundiman, zarzuela,
Harana, among others.
Your donations to FASO help us keep our Education &
Outreach Program alive. Thank you for your generosity. Are
you an aspiring musician? Or do you happen to know an
aspiring musician? Learn more about our Music Education
Workshop Program at www.fasofoundation.org
