either side with tinplate fireplaces including<br />

one by Evans & Cartwright, the two upstairs<br />

rooms presented through unusual arched<br />

house, the central porch flanked by bay windows, French doors on the first floor flanked by pairs of arched<br />

windows, the detailing in cream against the red brick ground, the interior with original wall <strong>and</strong> floor papers<br />

with attractive paper borders, arranged as one large ground floor room <strong>and</strong> one large first floor room,<br />

together with two Evans & Cartwright tinplate fireplaces within wooden surrounds, the furnishings including<br />

large scale ‘Yellow Cherry’ pieces <strong>and</strong> a cast metal chair, 90cm high.<br />

& J. Lines furnished dolls’ house,<br />

dated 1912, modelled as doublefronted<br />

villa with bay windows <strong>and</strong> a<br />

the mansarded roof with dormers, a<br />

widow’s walk <strong>and</strong> a clock tower, the<br />

four-roomed interior with staircase<br />

<strong>and</strong> interior doors, original finishes<br />

This house bears a brass plaque<br />

engraved ‘Kits Coty House, Harleston,<br />

1912’. It is illustrated by Jean Latham,<br />

(1969), p.145 <strong>and</strong> discussed at p.134.<br />

It is from this house that all other<br />

houses of this type take their name.<br />

‘Kits Coty’ is in fact a megalithic burial<br />

ground on the North Downs in Kent.<br />

double-fronted residence, with bay windows <strong>and</strong> steps up to a fine panelled front door, original finishes<br />

to the exterior <strong>and</strong> interior, the interior particularly finely detailed with panelled interior doors, a well-made<br />

staircase serving all three floors with original stair carpet, the rooms with unusual decorative details including<br />

‘plasterwork’ ceilings <strong>and</strong> panelling, one ground floor room with attractive overmantel mirror, the original<br />

furnishings including ‘Yellow Cherry’ pieces <strong>and</strong> numerous pictures, pieces of china <strong>and</strong> other contemporary<br />

miniatures, 165cm high.<br />

This was the first house acquired by Joy McQuade <strong>and</strong> remained her favourite throughout her collecting life,<br />

it is discussed by Jean Latham, <strong>Dolls</strong>’ <strong>Houses</strong>, A Personal Choice (1969), p.134 <strong>and</strong> is illustrated on pages<br />

72, 151, 155 <strong>and</strong> 185<br />

A Moritz Gottschalk ‘Blue Roof’ furnished dolls’<br />

house, circa 1880-85, single fronted with a bay<br />

window <strong>and</strong> portico entrance, the interior with<br />

original floor <strong>and</strong> wallpapers, the exterior also with<br />

original finishes, the contents including a cast iron<br />

fireplace <strong>and</strong> a Frozen Charlotte doll, 42cm high.<br />

This house is model no.2035 in the catalogue. A<br />

number of versions of this model are illustrated by<br />

Evelyn Ackerman, the Genius of Moritz Gottschalk<br />

the registered trade mark of F.E. Winkler<br />

for jointed dolls. It is believed that the<br />

head was originally made by Bähr <strong>and</strong><br />

Pröschild in 1894 although the trade<br />

mark was not registered until 1899 when<br />

Winkler won the Paris Medaille d’Or. His<br />

dolls were obviously intended for French<br />

market. Figure 1955 on the same page<br />
