John Holiday. Holiday’s unique voice and
numerous profiles across the country.
An acclaimed opera singer, Holiday has
performed at world-renowned venues
his work in jazz, gospel, and pop music. He will be accompanied
on the stage by celebrated pianist Jonathan King. Make sure to
read their biographies in our Playbill. Truly outstanding artists!
Our 35th Annual Vocal Competition finals keeps the excitement
going with some of the rising stars in the classical vocal world.
Mr. Holiday and YOU will be among the judges at this free event.
a message from
THE MAESTRO.
It is my pleasure to welcome you to this
weekend, featuring two exciting events
as we conclude Annapolis Opera’s 50th
Anniversary Season! Saturday evening,
we welcome John Holiday, countertenor,
and Jonathan King, pianist. This artist
series, Voices of our Time, reflects our
commitment to bringing established
artists to our stage who use their
voices to illuminate the relevance and
importance of this beloved art form.
We’re thrilled to witness first-hand the
many ways both these artists embody these qualities as they
offer a marvelously diverse program!
This recital is also part of our Annual Vocal Competition weekend.
For 35 years, Annapolis Opera has supported emerging artists
through this competition which has cultivated generations
of young talent, connecting them to audiences and industry
professionals while also providing crucial financial support.
We heard approximately 300 singers in the first round, 30
singers in the semi-finalist round—both of which were virtual—
and this weekend, look forward to welcoming the 8 finalists
to Annapolis. John Holiday and Elizabeth Futral, soprano, join
me to adjudicate and share feedback with the finalists as they
continue their well-deserved ascent in the profession.
Enjoy this weekend’s recital and the final round of the Annual
Vocal Competition!
JOHN HOLIDAY | Countertenor
Countertenor John Holiday has
established himself as “one of
the finest countertenors of his
generation” (Los Angeles Times).
His voice has been praised as “a
thing of astonishing beauty” (New
Yorker), “arrestingly powerful,
secure and dramatically high” (Wall
Street Journal), and “timeless”
(Washington Post). Holiday’s unique voice and powerful
story have been the subject of profiles in The New Yorker,
CNN’s Great Big Story, Los Angeles Times, and more.
Holiday began his 2022-23 season as a featured artist with
the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles. The season continues
in October at Quantum Theatre in Claire van Kampen’s
production of Idaspe, where Holiday makes his debut in the
title role alongside mezzo-soprano Vivica Genaux, followed
by the screening and streaming release of his acclaimed
film After/Glow on the Opera Philadelphia Channel, part
of their event Shorts: The Opera We Made. In November,
Holiday returns to The Metropolitan Opera as the Man Under
Arch and Hotel Clerk roles for the highly anticipated stage
premiere of Kevin Puts’s The Hours. In 2023, Holiday is set
to debut as a featured artist in the world premiere of Four
Portraits (Caroline Shaw/Jocelyn Clark) at the Lyric Opera of
Chicago. Holiday will also be joining the Pittsburgh Opera in
May of 2023 to star as John Blue in their production of We
Shall Not Be Moved, directed and choreographed by Tony
Award-winner and Kennedy Center Honoree Bill T. Jones.
An acclaimed concert singer, Holiday has performed at
world-renowned venues such as Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy
Center, Lincoln Center, London’s Barbican Center, and the
Philharmonie de Paris. His career highlights include a tour
with Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic;
the Sorceress in Barrie Kosky’s production of Purcell’s Dido
and Aeneas, and the world premiere of Matthew Aucoin’s
Eurydice as Orpheus’s Double at the Los Angeles Opera; the
world premiere of Daniel Bernard Roumain’s We Shall Not
Be Moved with Opera Philadelphia and the Dutch National
Opera; title role in Xerxes at the Glimmerglass Festival;
and Caesar in Handel’s Giulio Cesare in Egitto at Wolf Trap
Opera. In addition to the traditional concert performances
and recitals, Holiday has curated The John Holiday Experience (JHE)
to showcase his affinity and talent for many different genres that
includes classical, pop, jazz, and R&B. He has performed the program
on a national scale, bringing it to Dallas, Des Moines, and Dayton,
with plans to continue the eclectic evening of song in his upcoming
seasons.
Outside of classical repertoire, Holiday excels in jazz, gospel, and pop
music having opened for Grammy award winner Jason Mraz in concert.
In 2018, Holiday sang the national anthem for his hometown team
the Houston Rockets, and in 2019, Holiday performed at the starstudded
Ozwald Boateng Harlem Runway Show at The Apollo Theater,
in a performance that was covered by Vogue, Forbes, and CNN, and
attended by celebrities Jamie Foxx, Idris Elba, Dapper Dan and others.
Additionally, in 2019 Holiday performed Billie Holiday’s “Strange Fruit”
at the Apollo Theater Spring Gala. His debut pop single “Alive in Me”
was released in August 2021, followed by two more singles: “Waste
Composer: Henri Duparc (1848-1933)
The grass is soft for sleep beneath the cool poplars
On the banks of the mossy springs
That flow in flowering meadows from a thousand sources,
And vanish beneath dark thickets.
Rest, O Phidylé! Noon on the leaves
Is gleaming, inviting you to sleep.
By the clover and thyme, alone, in the bright sunlight,
The fickle bees are humming.
A warm fragrance floats about the winding paths,
The red flowers of the cornfield droop;
And the birds, skimming the hillside with their wings,
Seek the shade of the eglantine.
But when the sun, low on its dazzling curve,
Sees its brilliance wane,
Let your loveliest smile and finest kiss
Reward me to for my waiting!
En passant par où j’ai passé,
With sudden and ravenous tooth,
Love like a dog has bitten me.
By following the blood I’ve shed –
Come, you’ll be able to follow my trail.
Take a horse of fine breeding,
Set out, and follow my arduous course
By quagmire or by hidden path,
If the chase does not weary you.
Passing by where I have passed,
*Gladys Datch —We fondly remember Gladys Datch and her service as a Board Trustee and volunteer
for over 11 years. Gladys brought a huge smile and overwhelming positivity to everything she did. Her
most recent effort was to establish the new Annapolis Opera Guild. Her deep love of the Annapolis
Opera combined with her enthusiasm and dedication to supporting its success was admired and
appreciated by all who knew her. We will miss her.
+Joyce Olin—A keen art collector and lover of the outdoors, Joyce was a long-time trustee and
supporter of the opera. Beloved by the St. John’s College community, where her husband Chris
Nelson was President for 30 years, she was a generous and caring community leader.
