Timeless. The voices you will be hearing
over this weekend will be astonishing,
dramatic and powerful. We begin with, as
the Los Angeles Times noted, “one of the
finest countertenors of his generation,”
John Holiday. Holiday’s unique voice and
powerful story have been the subject of
numerous profiles across the country.
An acclaimed opera singer, Holiday has
performed at world-renowned venues
around the globe and is also acclaimed for his work in jazz,
gospel, and pop music. He will be accompanied on the stage
by celebrated pianist Jonathan King. Make sure to read their
biographies in our Playbill. Truly outstanding artists!
Our 35th Annual Vocal Competition finals keeps the excitement
going with some of the rising stars in the classical vocal world.
Mr. Holiday and YOU will be among the judges at this free event.
Be prepared to be amazed by the talent on the stage.
Annapolis Opera wishes to thank and recognize our staff, Board
of Trustees, volunteers, artists, donors, and patrons. Special
thanks and appreciation go to our Ruby Society members and
corporate sponsors. Your support, hard work, and dedication
to keeping opera alive in Annapolis make programs like this
possible.
As the curtain closes on our 50th Anniversary, we look forward
to having you join us this fall for exciting performances and
events as we begin our 51st Season.
Thank you for being with us!
a message from
THE MAESTRO
It is my pleasure to welcome you to this
weekend, featuring two exciting events
as we conclude Annapolis Opera’s 50th
Anniversary Season! Saturday evening,
we welcome John Holiday, countertenor,
and Jonathan King, pianist. This artist
series, Voices of our Time, reflects our
commitment to bringing established
artists to our stage who use their
voices to illuminate the relevance and
importance of this beloved art form.
We’re thrilled to witness first-hand the
many ways both these artists embody these qualities as they
offer a marvelously diverse program!
This recital is also part of our Annual Vocal Competition weekend.
For 35 years, Annapolis Opera has supported emerging artists
through this competition which has cultivated generations
of young talent, connecting them to audiences and industry
professionals while also providing crucial financial support.
We heard approximately 300 singers in the first round, 30
singers in the semi-finalist round—both of which were virtual—
and this weekend, look forward to welcoming the 8 finalists
to Annapolis. John Holiday and Elizabeth Futral, soprano, join
me to adjudicate and share feedback with the finalists as they
continue their well-deserved ascent in the profession.
Enjoy this weekend’s recital and the final round of the Annual
THE PROCESS
This year’s competition was open to singers from across the nation with nearly
300 applications received. Artistic and Music Director Craig Kier listened to all
submissions and together with a panel of judges by virtual means selected the
finalists before you today.
This process has led to today’s live performance with a new panel of judges
who will select the award winners.
EVALUATION CONSIDERATIONS
The following are among, though not exclusively, the elements considered by
the judges:
• Voice—quality (timbre, beauty), suitability for opera repertoire,
suitability for composers’ styles, vocal size (ability to fill medium-sized
opera house with full orchestra)
• Music—varied styles, tempi, tessitura, language
• Musicianship—pitch/intonation, rhythm, phrasing
• Technique—breath control, language/diction, flexibility
• Interpretation—projection, characterization/acting ability,
understanding of aria
• Stage Presence
• Potential for Career in Opera
THE FUNDING
Annapolis Opera is deeply grateful to the Helena Foundation, James and
Sylvia Earl, whose 24-year history of generously underwriting the Competition
enables us to present it to the public at no charge. In this way, the Helena
Foundation provides an invaluable opportunity for young artists to advance
their careers and for both new and experienced operagoers to enjoy a truly
unique experience.
*Gladys Datch —We fondly remember Gladys Datch and her service as a Board Trustee and volunteer
for over 11 years. Gladys brought a huge smile and overwhelming positivity to everything she did. Her
most recent effort was to establish the new Annapolis Opera Guild. Her deep love of the Annapolis
Opera combined with her enthusiasm and dedication to supporting its success was admired and
appreciated by all who knew her. We will miss her.
+Joyce Olin—A keen art collector and lover of the outdoors, Joyce was a long-time trustee and
supporter of the opera. Beloved by the St. John’s College community, where her husband Chris
Nelson was President for 30 years, she was a generous and caring community leader.
