Research Summary

Research has shown that stress has a negative impact on

mental health, with many people reporting feeling stressed

on a daily basis. Burnout rates have also been increasing, with

those aged 18-24 experiencing it the most, followed by ages 25-

34. A lamp with an anthropomorphic design and color-changing

functionality may help reduce stress levels and trigger positive

emotions, making it an ideal addition to any living space. The

lamp’s soothing color-changing light can significantly impact

mood and cognitive performance, transforming your space into

a stress-free sanctuary.

Burnout and quality of work

Over 38% of people are burnt out

47% of people who are burnt out report producing lower

quality work

A notable increase from 34.7% in 2021 and 29.6% in 2020.

Burnout is measured by an individual reporting high levels

of exhaustion, cynicism, and reduced professional efficacy.

Research

Stress and burnout by age range

People in the 18-24 age range are experiencing stress and

burnout at the highest rate (47%)

Insight:

Unlike older generations, Gen Z is more aware of their mental

health struggles and more likely to seek help. Differing from

previous generations, Gen Z thrives on self-directed, technologybased

learning. A self-directed learning approach for a mental

well-being product/app could provide learners with freedom of

use and flexibility

Anthropomorphic Forms

The anthropomorphic form of the lamp also triggers positive emotions

providing a sense of comfort and companionship through

the lamp’s friendly appearance. This can contribute to a more positive

and less stressful work environment, as the user may feel less

isolated and more connected to their work/living space

Benefits of Anthropomorphic Forms

Develop an emotional bond

between the user and the object

sometimes known as “identification”

or “self extension” resulting in positive

or sympathetic behavior

Creates familiarity which visually

provides emotional comfort to

the user

Proven to reduce stress and anxiety

by attributing emotions to an object.

Light Color Psychology

Red Light

• Participants shows higher tension level in the red condition than to white and blue condition,

especially at cool light. Whereas, there were no significant differences in tension level between blue

and white conditions

• The red color increased the anger level more than the white or blue color. The anger level decreased

during exposure to white and blue color conditions and warm white compared to baseline.

• The red color increased the anxiety level significantly compared to the other colors in the presence

of both warm and cool light.

Blue Light

• The use of cool light in white and blue environments decreased the tension level compared to the

baseline, which was more evident in blue and caused a significant difference in warm light

• The anger level decreased during exposure to white and blue color conditions and warm white

compared to baseline.

The study proves that red light should be avoided as it is linked to higher levels of anger, tension, stress, and anxiety.

The color blue when used with cool white light decreases tension significantly. Anger level is also decreased during

exposure to blue and white light. Therefore the light color options for this project should focus primarily on shades

of blue and white.

Physical Prototype Form Exploration

Following the exploration of various designs and forms using both

paper and CAD, I proceeded to create both full-scale and miniature

3D printing models for user testing purposes. This allowed me to

gauge people’s reactions towards specific forms and shapes, as

showcased on pages 27-29.

Feedback from user testing indicated that offering BUDDY as a

collection of tabletop lamps, rather than a single product, would

cater to different consumer preferences for both anthropomorphic

shapes and colors. Moreover, expanding the product line would

help reinforce its unique qualities and create more opportunities

for further development.

1. Teddy

Inspired by the comforting nostalgia of a soft, stuffed animal

companion from childhood, “Teddy” mimics the form of a teddy

bear to instill a sense of comfort and familiarity in addition to the

lamp’s color-changing light is deliberately selected to promote

relaxation and alleviate stress for the user.

Final Design

1. Puppy

“Puppy,” which takes inspiration from the concept of having a loyal

animal companion, functions similarly to “Teddy” where its form

allows the user to feel like they have a pet animal by their side.
