Description
In 1963 at the age of 18 Dave Gadd and I set out to hitchhike from Britain to New Zealand. We set off with
just £200 and made our way across Europe and Asia on the slenderest of budgets. In Asia we encountered a
world which had largely been unchanged since biblical times. Roads from Syria to Pakistan were unsealed
earthen and gravel tracks except within city limits. Travel was mostly on the top of trucks, and we often
slept rough. We arrived in Singapore with just 25 cents to our names but eventually managed to reach
Australia where we worked to find the funds to continue our journey to New Zealand.
