A BLACK WOMAN CARTOONIST WHO ESTABLISHED A
SPECIAL VOICE FOR BLACK WOMEN
Considering recent Supreme Court
decisions in the U.S. women have been
losing their freedom of decision-making
in child rearing and personal health
care.
One Black woman, Barbara Brandon-
Croft had established a voice for Black
Women and in so doing for all women
regarding issues pertaining specifically to
the female agenda. Barbara Brandon-
Croft is the daughter of Brumsic Brandon
who was a newspaper cartoonist who
produced the cartoon strip Luther.
Luther was a nationally syndicated
comic strip about African American
children and the struggle for racial
equality. The title Luther was inspired by
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and was last
published in 1986.
Barbara grew up watching her father
working on the kitchen table drawing
the Luther comic strips. She enjoyed
drawing and was recruited to add zip
atone coloring to her father’s comic
strips when she was in middle school.
It was not her intention to become
a cartoonist. One of her first jobs
was working for the Black women’s
magazine Essence. The editor liked her
drawings and hired her to do a monthly
cartoon. This is where the cartoon strip,
“Where I’m Coming From” originated.
Regrettably, the magazine went out of
business before her first cartoon was run.
The cartoon strip was composed of nine
characters who were primarily talking
heads each with their own personality.
The actual first publication of Barbara’s
comic strip was in the Detroit Free Press
and was then picked up by Universal
Press Syndicate and was found in
newspapers in the U.S., Canada, South
DESERT STONEWALL DEMOCRATS CONDEMNS HOMOPHOBIC SLUR USED BY DESERT HOT SPRINGS MAYOR P
TEM ROGER NUÑEZ
Palm Springs — Desert Stonewall Democrats strongly condemns the use of homophobic slurs by City of Deser
Hot Springs Mayor Pro Tem Roger Nuñez. We are deeply troubled by reports of Mr. Nuñez's use of a highly
derogatory reference to Gay men in an email communication to another Elected official. This incident is
particularly appalling given that Mr. Nuñez received the endorsement of Desert Stonewall Democrats, the on
LGBTQ Democratic club in the Coachella Valley, for his campaign for Desert Hot Springs City Council in 2020.
We commend Desert Hot Springs Mayor Scott Matas for his swift action in replacing Mr. Nuñez on a panel
representing the City and holding public meetings on the planned College of the Desert Palm Springs Campus
Mr. Nuñez's use of a homophobic slur calls into question his ability to represent his LGBTQ constituents in De
Hot Springs and to deal impartially with decisions impacting the proposed COD campus in the City of Palm
Springs, which is known internationally for its robust LGBTQ population.
As the Coachella Valley's leading LGBTQ political organization, we strongly condemn the use of language that
disparages, oppresses, or marginalizes any community or group of people. We will continue to stand in solida
with those who are subject to “othering” and discrimination such as the words used by Mr. Nuñez. Such lang
is never acceptable, and we call on Mr. Nuñez to publicly apologize to ALL of the people and organizations th
have supported, endorsed, and/or voted for him in the past. We will not be silent, and we will not support an
candidate who chooses to carelessly use abusive language, which normalizes hate speech.
Palm Springs Celebrates 85 Years!
Cruisin’ Through The Years
The City of Palm Springs 85th Anniversary
Celebration will be held on Saturday, April
8th from 11:30am to 9:00 pm in Downtown
Palm Springs and the Downtown Park.
Palm Springs was Incorporated April 20, 1938.
This year marks the 85th anniversary.
There will be a vintage car parade with so
many cars it’s a Guinness Book of World
Records attempt. (For inquiries on the vintage
car parade, please contact Keith McCormick).
Entertainment begins at noon with Elton John
tribute band in the downtown park beginning
at 7 pm. Dress your pet like your favorite
Hollywood celebrity for the dog costume
contest.
Sightings : Palm Springs celebrity visits occur
often, and we protect their privacy so they
return and others, like Jason Stuart - sends us a
press release every visit. We love them all! They
are fun, and they play with us like we are their
toys. I...never minded.
Another time current owner Rob, introduced
Timothy Ray Brown, who was in the crowd.
Brown as most know was the first person cured
of HIV and traveled the world like Johnny
Appleseed to provide “Timmy seeds,” which
supported significant HIV research. Sadly Tim
recently passed in Palm Springs. But on that
night, Rob matched the sentiment of scientists
worldwide have said for years,.
Celeb visits are a routine occurrence as many
famous people often show up to support the
LGBT community. Pride and the upcoming
Harvey Milk breakfast can attest to that. So it
is normal and fitting that we voted Tool Shed
the best Gay and Dive bar in Palm Springs ( Full
disclosure Tool Shed was a founding supporter
of this gay community and the DDG advertiser
for many years.) They have always been a
welcoming, gay-affirming, relaxed bar by day,
but at night things get different. Not off the
tracks, it becomes a traditional leather bar at
night for hawks, doves, and those who adore
them.
Voted the Best Bingo bar and Tool Shed’s
Tuesday Tunes, get many celeb fans enjoying
hosts Dj Corey’s and Larry Atello’s while
affirming our place in the world.
So It is not surprising the Tool Shed Bar gets
its share. I still remember and have pictures of
the warm sands sting victory party. I delivered
my magazine and prepared my pitch for the
human rights legal team’s warm sands gay
rights victory party, called the “Warm Sands
Stand.” The owner Chris said yes, you had me
at Warm Sands! Many great events happened
both inside and behind that bar, when they
rope off the crowd and have at it and find it a
tight fit, to get all those men inside one little
area. But they do it and back lot parties brings
villagers from miles around.
the best of our community.
We have many great gay and gay-friendly
places, but Warm Sands, itself mirrors its
Flagship Tool Shed bar, as an exceptional
lists worldwide. With fabulous Resorts, the
Africa, and Barbados.
The strip was unique in the way it was
presented, showing only talking heads
with no background images, sometimes
with hands added for expression. The
strip was unusual in newspapers where
of which have been shown in Drawn
and Quarterly. A few of her cartoon
characters can be found on Instagram
at @barbarabrandoncroft.
it was shown. Most cartoon strips did
not have any black characters other
than Franklin in Peanuts and Lt. Flap in
Beetle Bailey. Earlier cartoons that had
any Black characters were primarily
featured in racist negative situations.
Descriptions of Barbara’s strips have
included comments such as “ loud”,
“unapologetic” and telling the “truth”,
commenting on issues of Black women,
women in general, and political events.
A book recently out titled “Where I’m
Coming From”, is a retrospective of her
cartoon strips
Barbara’s cartoons are not found in
newspapers today, last published in
2006. She still creates some strips some
For Those who like it deeper
Sadly, because science remains a mystery for
many, we did not realize our Berlin Patient Tim’s
many contributions. He should be inducted in
the Palm Springs Walk Of Stars with others like
Tom Swann, who imagined and delivered the
nation’s FIRST and ONLY Gay veterans memorial
as a state monument!
Saying “We could build a wall of bricks with the
names of the extraordinary contributions of
LGBT folks.”
bullying, social isolation, or rejection because
of their sexuality.
Other things, such as their age, religion, where
they live, and their ethnicity can add extra
complications to an already difficult situation.
How talking therapy can help
It might not be easy, but getting help with
issues you’re struggling to deal with on your
own is one of the most important things you
can do.
Every issue of the DDG contains support and
groups that stand ready to assist you or for a
friend. We thank our advertisers support to
provide it.
I try to keep things light but recent sustained
attacks on the LGBT community has reached
the higest level of government and profoundly
saddened me. Some of us remember well the
sacrifice we endured for living while different.
Places like Warm Sands grew from the ashes
of hate and isolation to become a tremendous
sustaining community economic system for our
gay wanderers. The Palm Springs experiment
is working, one place that welcomes all people
and can self-correct. But its not fix size fits all
each individual is impacted diferently.
According to a UK NHS study Mental health
problems such as depression or self-harm can
affect any of us, but they’re more common
among people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual
and trans (LGBT).
This may be linked to LGBT people’s experience
of discrimination, homophobia or transphobia,
“Love him and let him love you. Do you think
anything else under heaven really matters?” –
James Baldwin
“If I wait for someone else to validate my
existence, it will mean that I’m shortchanging
myself.” – Zanele Muholi
If you help elect more gay people, that gives
a green light to all who feel disenfranchised a
green light to move forward.” – Harvey Milk
If a transvestite doesn’t say I’m gay and I’m
proud and I’m a transvestite, then nobody else
is going to hop up there and say I’m gay and
I’m proud and I’m a transvestite for them.” –
