The place: We headed into Cape May on a Sunday afternoon for an 

early dinner at Delaney’s on the Washington Street Mall. Delaney’s is

was craving a burger, so the special Chophouse burger menu available 

was a happy coincidence. The Southern burger quickly caught his eye — 

BBQ sauce, bacon, cheddar and caramelized onions. Nicole decided on 

a turkey club since she went heavier on the appetizers. To our surprise, 

the sandwich was HUGE, so we have lunch for another day this week 

for sure. They both came with chips and those came home with us for 

another time as well. 

The takeaway: Delaney’s is a great spot for a casual lunch or dinner... 

or if you’re grabbing a couple drinks. We weren’t drinking this 

afternoon, but we’d be lying if we said our eyes didn’t scan the drink 

menu during our visit. We’ll definitely take up a couple barstools the

Osprey returned on St Patty’s Day, 

right on schedule. Now comes the 

hard part — choosing a nest site, 

a mate and getting the sticks just 

right for the missus. First comes 

pair bonding, and based upon my observations, 

there is a bit of reshuffling going on 

along the banks of the Maurice River. The 

“pair” across the river is sometimes a trio and 

occasionally a foursome. Clearly the platform 

across from the Riverside Park is every bird’s 

first choice. Who gets to share it with who is 

yet to be determined. It is common for Osprey 

to nest in colonies... monogamy is strategy of 

choice among Osprey. 

This is not the case with all birds. In fact, 

the breeding strategy of your average backyard 

robin is pretty fluid. Producing a clutch of 

four eggs, it is projected that two of the chicks 

are fathered by the resident male, the other 

two sired by males in adjacent territories. 

That’s one way to keep the genes flowing. It 

also explains why robins chase other robins 

out of their territories.

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu 

Osprey play by different rules. The pairing 

going on now will last the season. The biggest 

and burliest female gets the best location and 

the best mate. Among birds of prey, females 

are typically larger than males — about 20 

percent in Osprey. This allows males and 

females to capture different sized prey. But 

it does not explain why the female is always 

larger. For years it was presumed it was to 

feel secure when mating, but a biologist friend

of mine developed a different interpretation. 

Ted noted that among Gyrfalcons, the 

same males were always at the same nest 

ledges, females were fluid, changing ledges 

(and mates) almost annually. Ted speculated 

that what the females were after was the best, 

most protected ledge and that the biggest 

burliest female got right of first refusal. If an 

unpaired female falcon saw a ledge she liked, 

she would challenge the resident female. The 

winner got the ledge and the resident male. 

I’m wondering if this same dynamic is not 

being played out here in Mauricetown, among 

my Osprey. Since Osprey mate for life, I’m 

presuming that last year’s female did not 

return, and the resident male and prime platform 

are up for grabs to the biggest burliest 

female Osprey. The male, I note, just sits on 

his favorite perch, eating fish, while the rival 

females are scrapping it out. One thing is certain, 

Osprey numbers are doing well if prime 

nest sites are in short supply. Prime mates? 

I’ll let you know at season’s end. Three fledged 

young means success; however it is achieved.

Here’s a secret I don’t tell many people. 

The morning after I watch a 

scary movie, I take comfort in leaving 

my house to find a quiet street 

that looks… normal. All the cars 

are parked where they usually are and there’s 

nothing out of place. And after watching some 

crazy sci-fi thriller, it’s a relief to know where I 

live hasn’t been attacked by aliens. 

So, imagine my relief after every episode 

of the HBO series The Last of Us. This is one of 

the better sci-fi out there. Some mistake it for 

a zombie movie. Having taught filmmaking 

to middle schoolers in Cape May for many 

summers, I know a thing or two about zombie 

movies. The boys would invariably want to 

make a flick about the undead. But this series 

isn’t that. In some ways, the dark fantasy is 

even scarier… because it’s actually possible. 

The premise is both far-fetched and 

weirdly believable. Bacterial fungus exists. 

And it can destroy things, including people 

if it could survive the higher temperatures of 

the human body. Toss in a smidge of global 

warming, and fungus could take hold of people 

— resulting in an outbreak. 

Could a fungus spread worldwide as 

quickly as described in the first episode? 

Probably not. But suspend disbelief for a 

moment to enjoy the story, which comes from 

a best-selling video game. I didn’t think one 

moment of that source material — but many 

have. Especially those who loved and played 

that game. The consensus seems that this was 

an outstanding interpretation. 

Pedro Pascal plays Joel, a mercenary who 

hunts the fungus-infested killing machines 

that overrun and destroy. Bella Ramsey plays 

Ellie, a kid who may hold the cure for the 

pandemic. The two need to travel across the 

post-apocalyptic country to find out if Ellie 

can save the world. 

The plot doesn’t unfold like a video game. 

Its sequences are not like levels you need 

to master. Instead, you’re walking through 

a tortured landscape side-by-side with our 

protagonists. Their adventure becomes your 

journey. It is brutal at times, but compelling. 

The sets are terrifying with dilapidated 

skyscrapers overrun with fungus and streets 

filled with abandoned, burned-out cars. The 

action is gripping, and the characters are genuine. 

It’s no wonder I wanted to head out after 

every episode to take in my neighborhood, my 

beautifully boring neighborhood. Have you

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, celebrate Easter in Cape May! 

Looking to have a “Hoppy Easter?” 

You’ll be following the example of 

an order of German monks. In the 

early 17th century, a group of monks 

in Bavaria prepared to mark the 40 

days of Lent by abstaining from all solid food. 

Liquids did not violate the fast, so, to sustain 

themselves, they modified a traditional 

Saxony beer recipe and brewed up a carbohydrate-heavy 

beer they called “liquid bread.” 

This concoction gained a reputation, and soon 

townsfolk came to the monastery for a taste. 

Prince Maximilian, a fan of the brew, allowed 

the monks to sell the beer, which became 

known as “Bock,” probably from the monastery’s 

location, “Einbeck.” Bock, and its stronger 

sibling, doppelbock, were brewed in the 

winter and released just in time for Lent. 

Today, German bock beers are available 

all year, but they still maintain their connection 

to Easter. Other beer-brewing nations 

also create special beers for Easter. Denmark 

makes a gold lager called “paske ol” for the 

holiday, brewed to be ready about two weeks 

before Easter. Belgium boasts both a pale ale 

and a dark brew, often sold with an Easter 

lily on the label. Craft brewers in the United 

States often mark the holiday with chocolate-flavored 

porters and stouts. 

Enjoy your Easter beer at the Cold Spring 

Brewery’s Easter Kegg Hunt. On April 8, from 

12 to 4pm, “hop over” to 720 Route 9, Cape 

May, grab a beer or a home-brewed soda and 

ask for your answer sheet. Search through 

Historic Cold Spring Village for the eggs, then 

answer the questions to find the next clue. 

Once finished, put your answer sheet into the 

Easter Kegg for a chance at a prize. For details, 

visit hcsv.org. Or, for an after-Easter-dinner 

beverage, try the Limoncello Shandy from 

Cape May Brew Co., spring sunshine in a can. 

Hoppy fun for children can be found at 

the Kiwanis Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, 

April 8 at 10 am on the beach behind Cape 

May Convention Hall. This is the temporary 

location for the event in which children hunt 

for Easter eggs with special prizes for each age 

group, up to age 10. Or, join the Easter Fashion 

Stroll presented by the City of Cape May, the 

Chamber of Commerce of Greater Cape May 

and the Small Businesses of the Washington 

Street Mall. Don your Easter bonnet and 

come to Rotary Park, 400 Lafayette Street on 

Sunday, April 9 at 1pm. Registration begins at 

noon, and there will be prizes in various categories 

and age groups. Spectators are treated 

to elaborate outfits and very cute kids. There 

is no rain date for these events.

A friend from high school reached out 

asking me to be his Best Man at his December 

wedding. I was surprised because I hadn’t 

heard from him since graduation — about 

six years. I said yes because I figured what 

the heck, it’ll be fun. We met at Carney’s last 

week for a few laughs and he informed me 

that he wants a destination bachelor’s party, 

specifically St. Lucia, and I’m expected to pay 

for it. I’m still in law school. He’s a line cook 

in an Atlantic City restaurant. On the other 

hand, I feel like I’m not honoring the Best Man 

code if I tell him no. That’s what friends do for 

each other isn’t it? — Best Man Blues

I have a dear friend who is always picking 

the wrong women. It always ends in heartache, 

and I end up on the phone with him for hours 

consoling him. I want to be supportive, but 

he never listens to me when I give him advice. 

It’s starting to affect my own mental health. I 

feel it’s time for him to get professional help. 

Lately, I’ve been ignoring his calls and I don’t 

want to be that person. How can I tell him he 

needs to turn his troubles to someone who is 

better equipped to help without hurting him?

Dear Troubled 

You need to tell him exactly what you just 

told the Answer Lady. Take him to Tisha’s for a 

nice dinner and broach the subject with love. 

Explain that your life is more complicated, 

and you don’t think the time the two of you are 

spending on his lost loves is helpful to either of 

you, but a professional can help him see what 

is healthy and what is not in a partner. We all 

could use that lesson.

brought to the shelter as a stray. He loves to 

play fetch and has tons of energy. Ralphie is 

a young dog who would be best if adopted by
