Dear Friends of Peggy Adams,
Thank you for making last year an incredible lifesaving success for the animals. Because of friends
like you, thousands of animals are getting a second chance at the happiness they deserve.
On the back cover of this edition of The Shaggy Sheet, you’ll read how we made a difference in
our community in 2022. Over 35,000 animals benefited from our programs and services. More
than 5,200 animals were placed into loving homes, over 3,000 animals benefited from our Foster
Care program, and over 12,000 pets received assistance through our Peggy’s Pantry. These are
just a few of the many impressive numbers we achieved with your help.
On the following pages, you will also read wonderful stories that have kickstarted 2023. January’s
Spay Day was a huge success! 420 community cats were spayed or neutered in just over seven
hours, helping to curb the overpopulation of community cats in our county. We look forward to
holding more of these lifesaving events throughout the year.
We also have many heartwarming “Happy Tails” to share. We are grateful to those who have
adopted or volunteered, companies and business that got involved, and those who donated to
support our mission, vision and lifesaving work.
On behalf of Peggy Adams and the animals we serve, thank you for all that you do. Together,
we are saving lives and building a more humane community.
Sincerely,
Sue Berry, CAWA
MISSION MOMENT
Jimmy
Jimmy, now named Norman,
pictured middle with his new family
Four-month-old Jimmy was surrendered to Peggy Adams Animal Rescue
League sick with parvovirus and the last survivor of his litter. Parvovirus is a
highly contagious disease in dogs that can cause severe illness and even
death. Peggy Adams’ medical team provided Jimmy intensive care for eight
days and he slowly began to make improvements.
Jimmy was a fighter. He finally made it through - testing negative for the
disease, eating on his own and regaining strength. But Jimmy’s with little
body needed a few more weeks to recover after being so sick; therefore,
he was placed into a temporary foster home. Each day, Jimmy continued to
gain strength and became the happy, playful puppy he was meant to be. In
late January, Jimmy was adopted into his new loving, forever home.
Happy tails, Jimmy. We are thrilled to have given you a second chance!
Peggy Adams’ Center for
Veterinary Care is located within our
Pet Resource Center and separate
from our shelter. Isolation rooms allow
us to take in dogs and cats with severe
and contagious illnesses and keep
them quarantined while they receive
treatment. Our medical team consists
of six full-time veterinarians, along with
veterinary and animal care technicians
who ensure the health and well-being
of all our animals.
DON’T KIT-NAP THIS KITTEN SEASON
Kitten Season has started again in sunny South Florida and chances are good that you
may come across tiny newborn kittens outside.
DON’T TOUCH THOSE KITTENS - their lives depend on it!
They’re cute and tiny, but Kitten Season is NOT cute.
During early spring until late fall, cats mate and give birth
to numerous kittens. It’s this time of year in which shelters
across the country feel added pressures.
Good Samaritans see these kittens and desperately want
to help them. The best way to help these kittens when you
see them is to watch closely – where
there is a nest of newborn kittens,
mama cat isn’t too far away.
Mama most likely went to find
food for herself so she can
continue to nurse her kittens
until they are able to eat on
their own.
Once you see mama come
back to her litter, you can
make it easy for her to find
food! Set up some food
and water far enough
away from her nest
so it does not attract
predators, but she can
still eat and get back
to her kittens quickly.
Easy, right?
round-the-clock care and animal shelters may not have
enough staff or fosters to care for these tiny newborn kittens.
The kittens’ best chance for survival is to stay with their
mother. Mama’s milk has antibodies that help them to grow
and get strong. Mama also teaches her kittens important
survival skills.
Once the kittens are 2 pounds or 2 months old, they are old
enough for vaccines and spay/neuter, and can then go into
an adoption program like the one at Peggy Adams.
WHEN YOU SEE KITTENS,
ask yourself these questions:
• Where is mama?
• Can I see her?
Yes? – Leave food and water at a distance.
No? – Watch for 24 hours and, if needed,
reach out to your local animal shelter for advice.
• What if I need more information?
please visit
PeggyAdams.org/Found-Kitten-Resources
After 24 hours, if you
notice that mama hasn’t
come back to her kittens,
this is when they MAY
need human intervention.
Please know that neonate
(newborn) kittens require
SAVING TINY LIVES
Keebler
Keebler was the first to arrive at the start of last year’s kitten season. Just days
old and abandoned, his condition was severe. He needed intensive care and
spent a few nights in an oxygen tank at a specialty veterinary clinic. Keebler’s
health was touch and go but with ongoing treatment by Peggy Adams’
veterinarians, and the affection from a loving foster family, he flourished. He’s
now running and chasing toys, purring and happy in his forever home.
Peggy Adams takes in over 500 kittens during the spring and summer months.
Our foster families provide essential care and bottle feeding, along with
endless love until these kittens are old enough for adoption.
MEDICAL SERVICES
On January 7th, Peggy Adams held a successful TNVR (Trap-Neuter-
Vaccinate-Return) Spay Day. Over 130 people brought in 422 cats
for free surgeries. This dedicated group included first-time and veteran
trappers working side by side.
TNVR is a program where freeroaming
cats are humanely trapped,
spayed/neutered, vaccinated for
rabies and other feline viruses,
ear tipped and then returned to
their outdoor homes. TNVR has
been shown to be the least costly,
most effective and humane way
of stabilizing and decreasing
community cat populations.
Our TNVR Spay Day included 12
doctors, 25 veterinary technicians
and nine veterinary students who
joined together from eastern Florida
to perform surgeries. This group
included a team from Operation
Catnip Gainesville, students from
the University of Florida and a team
from Veterinary Emergency Group.
In just seven and a half hours, this collaborative
team completed 422 spay and neuter surgeries.
There were also 47 volunteers and 42 staff members
TNVR Spay Day was an important
event to prepare for Kitten Season.
Kitten Season creates a strain on
shelters, including Peggy Adams,
due to the hundreds of newborn and
young kittens flooding their facilities.
This results in the need for increased
staffing and foster families. In an
effort to reduce the strain Kitten
Season poses, Peggy Adams plans
on increasing the number of Spay
Days throughout the year.
22 ND ANNUAL
Over 1,000 people and their furry companions came out to support
Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League’s 22nd Annual Walk for the
Animals on February 25th at the Meyer Amphitheatre in West Palm
Beach. The largest pet-friendly walk in Palm Beach County raised
more than $100,000 for the animals at Peggy Adams waiting to
find their forever homes.
As participants arrived, they enjoyed music, a complimentary
breakfast, a fabulous silent auction, a variety of vendors and a raffle
area with great prizes. Attendees and their pets participated in a
one-mile scenic walk along Flagler Drive. The event concluded at
center stage with a pet costume contest with unique prize baskets.
Kevin Rolston of WRMF 97.9 and Brooke Silverang of WPBF 25
News served as the event’s emcees.
HAPPY TAILS
BENNIE
Adopted 10/14/22
Bennie has
quickly become a
member of our family
and has taken over
the house! He loves his
brother Claude and
ambushes him on a
regular basis. We’re
convinced his great
grandfather was a saber tooth tiger but he’s the most loving,
sweet, adorable, brilliant kitten on the planet! He knows several
tricks and fetches like a top-notch retriever! He loves riding in
the car and made his first road trip to New Orleans last year.
Thanks to all who rescued him and gave him a chance for a
beautiful life! We absolutely love, love, love him (even when
he’s bad)!”
- Theodora
PANQUECA Adopted 11/11/22
Since we brought Panqueca home, our days
are full of joy, love and happiness. We take her to the
beach and to the dog park every week. It’s a blast! She
likes to run after the birds and go in the ocean doing
bubbles in the water with her nose, which is super
funny. When we get home, she already knows that it’s
bath time and she goes straight to the shower. If there’s
one thing she loves, it’s bath time! For the New Year, we
took a road trip to North Carolina and, of course, we
took her with us. She loved the snow and the trails.”
“Panqueca is more than just a dog for us. I am sure
she doesn’t have any idea the blessing that she is. We
love her very much! Thank you, Peggy Adams, for the
amazing job that you guys do!”
- Leticia, Rodrigo & Family
ASH
Adopted 8/29/22
Ash has been a wonderful
addition to our family. We
found his favorite food very
quickly; therefore, he never
tries to steal human food off
our plates! Ash is incredibly
playful and loves to cuddle
with us at night! We have taken
him on several walks and car
rides and he is transitioning to
an adventurous life quickly. We
can’t stop saying how cute, soft
and fluffy he is! Thank you so
much for a wonderful cat!”
DANGEAU Adopted 8/15/22
When I adopted Dangeau, I was initially told he was challenging and
had been adopted and returned twice. However, I decided I was up for the
challenge, having had dogs in the past that would be considered difficult. His
first month was an adjustment and after 6 months in the shelter, everything
was very exciting and stimulating. Since getting into his new routine, he has
calmed down significantly and is off his anxiety medications. I think it just took
him time to realize he has a forever home and he can finally relax.”
“Dangeau lives on a college campus, so he is around many people daily and
easily got used to everyone. He eats a salmon and sweet potato diet but loves
cheese as a treat. When I am at work, he likes to lay on the sofa with his chew
toys and watch the TV show “Friends”. Dangeau is very much loved and has
become the pride and joy of my home. Thank you!”
We can’t imagine how worried this family was when their sweet boy went missing.
Luckily, a good Samaritan found Marshall wandering around outside and brought him
MISSION MOMENT
Milton
Milton is a 2-year-old English Bulldog mix that came
to Peggy Adams as a transfer from Palm Beach
County Animal Care & Control. When he was
transferred to us, he was very sick with pneumovirus.
Due to the contagiousness of this virus, Milton was
placed in an isolation space where he received
medication and care until he recovered.
While he was in isolation, we noticed that his
brachycephalic or “bulldog” traits were especially
severe. He had a severely elongated soft palate (tissue
blocking his airway) and his nares (nostrils) were too
small. This made it difficult for him to breathe and he
was getting tired quickly when exercising.
We performed surgery on his palate and his nares
to make his breathing easier. Even the next morning,
he could breathe so much better and was attempting
to run down the hallway. Milton stayed under the
supervision of our medical team for a week to recover
and then was placed up for adoption. On March 2nd,
Milton was adopted into his loving, forever home.
GIVING COMES IN MANY WAYS
– A Donor Story
“The animals are my passion. I
believe in this cause, so it’s easy
to give of myself, whether it’s
time, resources or raising funds
for the Walk for the Animals.”
- Judy Noren
New to the area, Judy Noren
wasn’t sure where to turn to when her
18-year-old dog was at the end of
his life. A friend suggested she contact
Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League.
That was eleven years ago.
Remembering how compassionate the
Peggy Adams team was as she said
goodbye to her beloved pet, Judy
shared, “They made a heartbreaking
task a little more bearable.”
Judy’s first experience started her on
a giving trend. Her consistent financial
support includes naming a dog kennel
and bench in the Lesly S. Smith Pet
Adoption Center, giving monthly to our
Annual Campaign, and raising money
to become the top fundraiser for our
Annual Walk for the Animals.
In addition, Judy gives her time to
Peggy Adams as a volunteer, assisting
in our Shaggy Shoppe boutique and
helping at events. Over her 11 years,
she has volunteered with dog walking,
laundry, off-site adoption events and
our annual Christmas Ball. She recently
volunteered in February at our 22nd
Annual Walk for the Animals.
Judy is a true friend to our animals
– especially the old timers. Often
overlooked because of their age or
health, Judy has a special fondness for
the older dogs. She has fostered many
throughout the years and has given
them the love and care they
so deserve.
We salute Judy, and all those who
give - their resources, their time,
and their hearts – on behalf of
the animals.
We invite you to join our
LEADERSHIP CIRCLE
The Leadership Circle is made up of individuals who have
expressed their intention to support Peggy Adams Animal Rescue
League annually at a major level of $1,000 or more for five
years or longer. The stability and support that Leadership Circle
contributions provide directly saves the lives of thousands of
cats and dogs in our community each year. The support helps
us provide shelter and medical services to lost, surrendered
and homeless animals, and find them their forever homes.
We are grateful to our Leadership Circle contributors for their
dedication to the mission of Peggy Adams Animal Rescue
League, and the dogs, cats, puppies and kittens that deserve
a second chance at life. Their commitment helps us meet today’s
needs and build a foundation of support for the future.
CORPORATE AND GROUP PARTNERSHIPS
Have a company or business and interested in
getting more involved with Peggy Adams?
We have many opportunities, including event sponsorships, naming opportunities,
vehicle sponsorships, donation drives and volunteer project groups.
Here are two examples of organizations giving back:
Every year, the staff at DSM Capital Partners nominate their
favorite non-profits to receive an end-of-year donation. This year,
we were lucky enough to be in the running! Steve Tish rallied his
colleagues’ votes on behalf of our organization, resulting in us
receiving a generous gift. Steve’s daughter, Jordyn Tish, was a
dedicated Animal Care volunteer at Peggy Adams for years, and
her compassionate care during her time here had such a positive
impact on our animals.
With this gift, the Tish family and DSM Capital Partners have made
a huge difference in the lives of the thousands of animals we care for
each year! Thanks, friends!
Jordyn Tish, Steve Tish, with Kati Erickson of Peggy Adams
Organizing a corporate group project
is another way for companies to get
involved! Thanks to this fantastic group
from TD Bank for spending a day of
service at Peggy Adams. After packing
food for Peggy’s Pantry and assisting
our Animal Care team, they met a few
of the dogs they served. They made a
big difference for our animals, and they
look fabulous in their Rescue Proud gear
which is available in our Shaggy Shoppe
boutique. THANKS, TD BANK!
TD Bank Staff
Peggy Adams is grateful for the support of
DSM Capital Partners, TD Bank, and our
other corporate supporters. They play a
vital role in providing lifesaving services
to animals in Palm Beach County through
their donations of funds, supplies and time.
