Blinds & Shutters - Issue 2-2023

As I write this it seems as if the Government has reached an agreement with the EU regarding trading arrangements with Northern Ireland. This seems long overdue and let’s hope it doesn’t led to a two tier system within the UK and it gets through Parliament. Also energy prices are still high on the agenda and decisions are being made as we speak on whether there will still be any financial help from the Government. Industry does not seem to be talked about as much as consumers, but if the Government really want to control inflation, energy prices have to come down for prices not to continue rising. It’s a tough time for everyone in the UK, I hope it ‘s not going to get any harder for industry. John Hatcher, Editor

Premium pergola
Caribbean Blinds
installs 8-cluster
premium pergola to
complement
renowned London
members’ club
Throughout the global pandemic, all
hospitality and commercial establishments
had to reconsider the use and functionality
of their outdoor spaces, and for many, this is still a
priority.
Having seen the demand for their range of
high-quality weather-proof awnings, external blinds
and pergolas rise by 161% during this time,
Caribbean Blinds is leading the market as it
continues on its mission to turn open spaces into
year-round revenue creators.
In June 2022, Caribbean Blinds installed 8 of its
original louvered roof pergola canopies –
the Outdoor Living Pod – at a collaborative
members’ club in Covent Garden, London.
The client
Having installed the Outdoor Living Pod at their
Mayfair location in 2018, The Conduit wanted to
replicate this design at their new club – on a much
larger scale. The flexible shade and shelter
provided by the Outdoor Living Pod would allow
the terrace to be used all year round, offering an
important revenue stream for the business, along
with a unique dining experience for their
discerning members.
The brief
The client wished to cover two thirds of the
300sq/m roof terrace with pergolas, leaving the
remaining third completely open. The ‘Prestige’
model of the Outdoor Living Pod was chosen due
to its rotating louvered roof that fully retracts and
is completely watertight when closed.
The finished result
The perimeter edges of all 8 Outdoor Living
Pods were equipped with screens to offer
protection from the elements, whilst additional
‘doorways’ between modules would allow for
different areas to be zoned off. Each module was
installed with infra-red heating and festoon lighting
to create a cosy and pleasant environment all year
round.
Stuart Dantzic, managing director at Caribbean
Blinds, explained: “We worked closely with the
architect, designer, contractor and end client at
every stage of this project, ensuring it ran
smoothly, on time and on budget. Manufacture
from order sign-off was 12 weeks, with installation
taking 2 weeks for our trained teams to complete
– all in time for a VIP 4th July party.”
Anthony Pollak, Facilities Director at The
Conduit, added: “The Pods have enabled us to use
our terrace all year round. By opening them up in
the summer, and keeping the roof closed, sides
down and heaters on in the winter, it gives us
some much needed outside space. From the initial
design meeting to installation, the Caribbean
Blinds team made the whole experience very
smooth and straightforward.”
The Outdoor Living Pod
explained…
Designed for those who want to live life
outdoors, the innovative rotating louvered
roof offers an open-air
alfresco feel when left fully open,
and ensures a completely water, wind and
snow-tight roof when closed. Optional
windproof screens, ambient LED perimeter
lighting and instant infra-red heaters provide
a cosy and pleasant environment all year
round. Constructed from corrosion resistant,
powder coated aluminium, the low-maintenance
Pod adapts to any outdoor lounging or dining
space.
