Andrena and Axel’s kitchen in their thirty-year-old 

home in Peterborough was small, dark and old 

fashioned. It was just a room to pass through, 

not somewhere they wanted to spend much time. 

“We travel to Europe frequently and we like the 

European style,” says Andrena. “We were looking for 

a company that could bring our concept of tradition 

and modernity to life. Kitchen Cabinet Solutions was 

recommended to us by friends, and designer Stacey 

Lawrence was on board with our vision. We wanted 

an open space with an airy, spacious feeling without 

upper cabinets. Stacey was super excited to work with 

us on this.” 

Andrena and Axel took their wish list to Stacey and 

in consultations with her, they decided on the main 

features for the kitchen. Once extensive measurements 

were taken, Stacey developed a design which, after a 

few back and forths, was ready to go. 

on the cabinets, silver on the appliances, with white 

countertops and backsplash. Modern black handles 

and other fixtures complement the tones. 

The centrepiece of the new kitchen is a 4 ft. by 5 ft. 

island featuring an overhang, making it a comfortable 

spot for four or five to sit around. The island holds the 

microwave and has storage on both sides. A flat panel 

at the back has a touch latch that pops open. 

The kitchen has multiple pull-out drawers for dishes, 

pots, dry goods, garbage and recycling. There’s much 

more counter and storage space compared to before. 

“I didn’t want a lazy Susan,” says Andrena, so in the 

corner cabinet there’s an amazing pull-out accessory 

that brings the contents at the back forward. There’s 

also a narrow pull-out for the spices and oils right 

beside the stove where they’re handy for cooking, and 

a wine rack beside the fridge. 

Two walls were removed to open up the space to let in 

more light and allow more flow into the adjacent living 

and dining room areas. 

The colour palette chosen features monotones of 

charcoal and matte black on the island, slate grey 

Open shelves on one wall provide an airy feel and 

feature seasonal displays, such as a gold heart on 

Valentine’s Day, Easter bunnies, and Christmas décor. 

The wood shelves pick up on the new wood flooring, 

which is perfectly matched to the existing flooring on 

the other parts of the main floor.

Two walls are finished in white quartz, the same as 

the countertops and the top of the island, making the 

whole room sparkle as light bounces off all the high 

gloss surfaces. 

The overall effect of this kitchen now is bright and 

airy, with lots of natural and overhead lighting with

influences.

When Jeff and Jessica Wilson bought their 

lot on Percy Lake in Haliburton looking to 

construct their dream year-round home, 

they knew who to turn to. They are both real estate 

agents in the area, working with Haliburton RE/MAX 

and were aware of the reputation and high quality 

of Discovery Dream Homes. They didn’t hesitate to 

contact Kirk Figeuira, Design and Consulting Associate, 

whom they already knew. 

“Jeff and I came to Discovery with some design 

ideas and they drew up the detailed plans for a 

custom log and timber frame home that also included 

an airplane hangar for our amphibious plane,” says 

Jessica. “We had the confidence they would take good 

care of us.” 

“Jeff and Jessica wanted a modern log and timber 

frame home, with a single slope roof, not peaked,” says 

Kirk Figueira. “This is the first house I’ve been involved 

in with an airplane hangar, but our design team 

came up with a workable design to accommodate the 

amphibious plane, which is brought up from the water 

on wheels for inside storage.” 

With all Discovery projects, the client can use 

Discovery certified builders, or can arrange for their 

own contractor. In this case, Jeff project-managed 

his own build, and organized the sub trades, while 

Discovery delivered the materials. 

The new 2,400 sq. ft. home sits on a four-acre lot 

amidst a forest of hemlocks on a point surrounded 

by water on the 1200 ft. lake front. The exterior 

reflects the Canadian Shield landscape with its granite 

foundation made from local stone and walls of log in 

the middle and dark grey and natural timber frame on 

the upper part. 

Inside white-washed log walls brighten the space along 

with high cathedral ceilings and large double-paned 

windows that take advantage of the lake views in the 

great room. Girder timber frame trusses in a darker 

tone offset the white walls. A granite wood-burning 

fireplace centres the room. 

In addition to the great room, the main floor has three 

bedrooms and two bathrooms, while the lower level is 

fully finished with an office and one bedroom, with the 

airplane hangar to the side. 

The family with three children enjoys boating, fishing 

and swimming during the warmer months and ice 

fishing, skiing, and hockey during the winter. Their 

home stands up to all weather with its ICF foundation, 

in-floor heating, and the wood-burning fireplace.

Considerations for a Cottage AirBnb 

One of the most difficult things about owning a 

cottage can be finding the time to spend there. 

Rather than having a property that sits empty for 

large portions of the year, many cottage or vacation 

property owners look to rent out their property on 

websites likes AirBnb, or through other short term 

rental facilitators. 

While this can be a great way of helping to offset 

the cost of maintaining the property, or even having 

it turn a profit, there are a number of other factors to 

consider before turning the keys over to your guests. 

Bylaw and Insurance considerations 

In response to the growth in the short term rental 

industry, many municipalities have passed bylaws 

and licencing programs to help keep track of and 

hold short term rental owners accountable for the use 

of their property by their guests. It is important to be 

aware of any local bylaws or licencing requirements 

which may be in effect in the municipality where your 

cottage property is located. 

Similarly, you’ll want to make sure that you have 

adequate and appropriate insurance coverage in place 

to protect against any issues arising at the property. 

Many insurance companies have different requirements 

or policy limits when extending coverage to a rental 

property, so you’ll want to make sure you have an 

appropriate policy in place in case the need to make a 

claim arises. 

Accounting for the Revenue 

Like with any other business income, you’ll need to 

account for the revenues generated by your rental 

property and have to charge HST on short term rental 

income. If the property is owned personally, and 

rentals fees paid to you directly, this will likely be 

considered as personal income, and taxed accordingly. 

It is also common to see a corporate entity listed as the 

owner on title to the property, or to have a property 

management company that handles the logistics of 

recruiting and booking renters. Make sure to touch 

base with your accountant or financial planner to 

ensure you’re set up in the most efficient way possible 

to maximize your return on collecting rental income.

Robyne and Jeff’s 4,500 sq. ft. home is in a new 

development south of Peterborough near the 

Otonabee River. Their goal for the interior was to 

have a relaxing, calm space in a consistent style flowing 

throughout the home. To bring their vision to life, they 

turned to Angela Jones, owner of Lakeshore Designs. 

“We had seen Angela’s work in the Princess Margaret 

Dream Cottage she designed on Buckhorn Lake where 

my family vacations, and we were impressed with her 

work,” says Robyne. “We decided to bring her in quite 

early in the process.” 

“For this beautifully sized new home, we looked at 

the lifestyle of the family to best meet their needs and 

aesthetic which would take into account their busy 

lives with two home offices,” says Angela Jones. “They 

wanted a relaxing, calming space, with a unified look on 

a lakehouse theme.” 

Angela says that she was excited to have a clean slate 

on which to work. As with many of Lakeshore’s projects, 

she used Feng Shui principles to guide the project. 

Angela met with the family to go over the concept, 

colour palette, furnishings, lighting, window treatments, 

carpets, accents, and décor items, creating a design 

proposal for each room, which included the living and 

dining rooms, den, kitchen, two offices, laundry, lowerlevel 

gym and more. 

Angela chose a palette of neutral off-white, grey-blue, 

with driftwood and sea grass tones, evocative of the 

nearby natural landscape. Blue accents in the navy 

appliances and other decor complement the grey. She 

added texture and interest with ship lap on certain 

feature walls and in the indented ceiling in the living 

room. She advised on the lighting layout to achieve the 

brightest airy look, including a white branch chandelier 

overhanging the harvest table in the dining room. 

Robyne’s 1,000 ft. office over the three-car garage is 

a calm, efficiently organized retreat separate from the 

main house where she conducts her business with 

clients from around the world. 

“We’re thrilled with the end result - it’s more than 

we ever imagined,” says Robyne. “It’s airy and fresh, 

with clean lines and a bright atmosphere. Its relaxing 

beach feel flows throughout the entire house. Angela 

and her team were brilliant to work with – constant 

professionals who truly understood our family’s lifestyle 

and needs.”

Pierre and his wife Ruth were moving back to 

the Peterborough area after being away for 

30 years for their careers. The couple were 

building a new home in a development south of the 

city and because they are passionate about supporting 

local, they consulted Peterborough This Week’s 

Reader’s Choice recommendations. After checking 

out the reviews, they decided to visit the Cabinetree 

showroom. 

“We were introduced to designer Beverly Wellington 

and were so impressed by her confidence, creativity, 

ability and patience to listen to what we wanted in our 

new kitchen and her skill at implementing those ideas,” 

says Pierre. 

“The overarching design style we were aiming for is 

known as ‘transitional,’ a combination of modern and 

traditional elements,” says Beverly Wellington, designer. 

The couple wanted a sleek, functional and aesthetically 

pleasing kitchen, with adequate space for storage, 

along with display areas. After some tweaking, the 

couple approved the plans. 

“The MDF cabinets feature our Cosmopolitan door, 

which is accented with a simple bead detail. The 

perimeter is painted Benjamin Moore’s ‘Revere Pewter,’ 

a warm grey-beige colour that contrasts nicely against 

the Black Ink island – also a Benjamin Moore colour,” 

says Beverly. “The quartz countertop and the full 

height quartz backsplash are a warm white with 

complementary taupe veining which really unifies the 

colour palette.” 

The 8.5 ft. long island boasts an eating bar with 

space for four stools, a deep sink, dishwasher, cutlery 

storage, and electrical outlets on each side. Doormatched 

ends and back panels, along with decorative 

baseboard bring a tailored, furniture-like style to the 

perimeter faces. 

Pierre can’t say enough about the installers, whom he 

calls “craftsmen.” 

Around the corner, a walk-in pantry features lower 

cabinets and floating shelves on which to store food. A 

servery between the kitchen and the dining area has a 

secondary fridge and cabinets for added storage. 

“My wife and I wanted two work areas so that we 

could do food prep side by side without getting in 

each other’s way,” he continues. 

Outfitted with the same unifying colours and 

countertops as found in the kitchen, a 12 x 15 ft.

says that the room always looks impeccable, with

and complexity.” 

“When we’re working on a project we use many 

different local trades, subtrades and supplies, not 

like out-of-town contractors, who tend to use their 

out-of-town connections,” he continues. “Over our 

years in business, we’ve developed great relationships 

with our local trades and suppliers. When we keep 

the business local, we are contributing to a strong 

community and local economy.” 

During construction, dozens of local sub-contractors 

are employed for work that includes excavation, 

foundations, structural steel, plumbing, electrical, 

heating, framing, glazing systems, concrete finishing, 

stucco, masonry and more. 

“My sons John, Dan and I are a strong team who 

are dedicated to our clients and projects,” says Rich. 

“We’re in it for the long term and pride ourselves on 

our close attention to details.” 

With all of their projects, they strive to provide close 

on-site oversight and management to ensure success. 

He says it’s important to keep tabs on the timing 

and efficiency of the work, making sure the project 

is well-scheduled and managed, and completed as 

quickly and efficiently as possible.

our projects, we get direct feedback, and our trades 

know what we expect. My daily site visits keep us 

on a good rapport with the trades so that we’re all 

working well together for the good of the project.”

Helping Dapper Snappers! 

It’s becoming obvious that snappers need our help! 

Snappers are essential to our health and wellbeing, 

to the health of our lakes, and to our fish and 

wildlife populations- and they are in trouble! 

You may see “many snappers” around but against 

historic numbers, snappers and, in fact, all turtles in 

Ontario, have declined by up to 70%. What’s more 

is that it takes roughly 60 years for them to replace 

themselves, only once, in nature. 0.06% of eggs will 

hatch, and then hatchlings survive to reach adulthood. 

Adult turtles are essential to keep populations stable, 

and adults have few natural threats allowing them 

to live and produce for hundreds of years. However, 

cars and increased traffic mean turtles are in trouble. 

Wetlands losses have also added to issues, as critical 

habitats for turtles’ survival. Snappers you see are 

survivors, yet they are also vulnerable. 

Turtles, especially snappers, are irreplaceable 

janitors and gardeners for lakes and wetlands. They 

are scavengers; and being slow swimmers they are 

opportunistic eaters consuming mainly carcasses of 

frogs, fish or animals that died over the winter in lakes 

and wetlands. Snappers therefore remove sources of 

harmful bacteria (which can cause jock-itch, and make 

waters un-drinkable). Older turtles need less protein 

and consume approximately 60% vegetation and seeds. 

Then, as they migrate through their territories, they 

disperse these viable seeds, growing new fish nurseries 

and moose habitats. 

Turtles move in regular patterns from when they are 

very young. After hatch-out to about age four, turtles 

are making spatial memories of the places in their 

territories including hibernation sites, nesting areas 

etc. Turtle territories average 8km2, but snappers 

have been known to migrate up to 16km to reach 

hibernation sites. Turtles also know where they’re 

going, having specialized biology alerting them to 

magnetic north, and using the sun to decipher east 

from west. Moving a turtle more than 200m is illegal, 

and can ultimately result in their death.

to give you skills and knowledge to help our shelled 

friends. Turtle Guardians has many ways to learn 

and volunteer; from their Crossing Guard program to 

Nest Sitters, there’s an option for all ages and levels.
