Exhibition catalog: Discourse of War
This exhibition is about the impact of the war on the lives and creative paths of artists in Ukraine and worldwide. We want to show how artists’ attitude to art has changed during this year. How changed the vector of their creativity and attitude to the language of art in connection with these events. War has no nationality or religion. War has an impact on everyone individually and on all of humanity in general. Our goal is to show how artists from different parts of the world perceive war. This is an art discourse between artists and viewers.

Kings Without a Country
Королі без батьківщини
22.9x30.5 cm
“Kings Without a Country” explores themes of loss, displacement, patriarchy, and the human
experience of war. Borrowing from my own experience as refugee after the Vietnam war, the
work tells the story of men who have lost everything — identity, power, country, homes, and
loved ones. However, the work is not about their redemption as it also alludes to the fall of the
patriarchy representing a larger theme of the disruption of traditional power structures who
are mostly to blame for the atrocities of war.
The semi-figurative elements in the work pay respect to the human stories of war. The color
and marks highlights the emotional — fear, anger, despair, confusion, sadness, hate, love— and
psychological toll of war. Influences from folk and graphic arts adds cultural specificity and
sheds light on the lost cultural and personal histories that often accompany war.
