Exhibition catalog: Discourse of War
This exhibition is about the impact of the war on the lives and creative paths of artists in Ukraine and worldwide. We want to show how artists’ attitude to art has changed during this year. How changed the vector of their creativity and attitude to the language of art in connection with these events. War has no nationality or religion. War has an impact on everyone individually and on all of humanity in general. Our goal is to show how artists from different parts of the world perceive war. This is an art discourse between artists and viewers.

“Every gun that is made, every warship launched,
every rocket fired signifies in the final sense, a
theft from those who hunger and are not fed,
those who are cold and are not clothed. This
world in arms is not spending money alone. It is
spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of
its scientists, the hopes of its children. This is not
a way of life at all in any true sense. Under the
clouds of war, it is humanity hanging on a cross
of iron.”

About artwork
After February 24, it seems that began to beat I am amazed by the events and actions
of people who attacked our country. In this picture, I highlighted Ukraine as a girl who
found herself in the middle of a field alone without support but with faith in her soul.
Faith in this work as an angel flying through a cloud. In the distance, the sunrise indicates
that sooner or later the light will overcome the darkness On the left side of the
girl, destruction on our land, but on the right side, where her bare foot stepped, there is
already green grass and flowering mallows. This is a sign of the revival of our Ukraine.
Closed eyes girls indicate pain and despair, but she does not show it to anyone. Because
she believes that faith in a beautiful future will save our country!

About artwork
I am from Latvia. From a country where people know and appreciate the price of
freedom, especially if your neighbor is russia. I admire and take my hat off to every
Ukrainian who fights for his country and its freedom. That’s why I decided to embroider
the portrait of this person, for whom I feel inexpressible respect and admiration. This
will be my small thank you to Ukraine. He is the president of Ukraine, a husband, a father,
and just a good person. He is Ukrainian and legends will be told about Ukrainians
for many more generations. Glory to Ukraine! Victory will be yours!

Every human makes numberless choices during a life time. By choosing one we lose
lots of other options. They say if you don’t choose any, you can have them all. Because
only then, everything is possible. This state makes choosing part even harder; once you
choose there is no turning back. I love to dance around the term entropy with my art.
As a matter of entropy; the whole universe tends to diffuse. With my work; I show the
despair of choosing. That fleeting temporariness can only be captured by art and that
makes it unique. I love to give a glimpse of the entropy we are all experiencing. They say
only a camera can capture the fleeting moment, I disagree that with my art. Every single
being is a story waiting to be told, I am the humble vessel in between.

About artwork
I wrote and illustrate a poem after my constant anxiety and the weltschmerz I’ve been
experiencing. With this series you can see my mental process unfolding before your
eyes.
“...And if you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss also gazes into you.” Said Nietzsche. The
catalyst of my idea was this sentence.
Daily life feels like a never ending nightmare since I can’t remember how long.
Abyss
Woke up in the middle of the abyss,
-again.
Time drizzled on and I couldn’t sleep a wink.
“Welcome back to the land of the living” the caterpillar whispered.
I stared at him with blank eyes.
He stared right into my soul.
I wondered if I was invisible until being perceived by him.
Was I not occupying a certain amount of volume till my imagery is mirrored onto his
retina upside down?
Time was decaying rapidly as I sat down on my bed.
Was I a prisoner of time, space … or both?
He asked, “Do you know where the universe is expanding into?”
“Nowhere, everywhere,” I mumbled.
“Same mediocre punchline in a different set of skin suits.” He muttered.
I’ve felt like a Chinese room.
The rain started tapping on the roof,
as we sat there and practiced being fluent in silence.

In October 2022 russians attacked one more nuclear power station in the Mykolaiv region. A
video from a local camera had a big impact, like one more shocking point from thousands of
others that I will remember from this war. Because I’m from Mykolaiv, my grandparents live in
the Mykolaiv region, and my cousin lives and works near the nuclear power plant. That’s why it
touched me so.
This art is about fragility. How fragile is our system, how weak are we, and how delicate is nature?
I saw nuclear weapons tests on YouTube. One video also depicted gulls or sterns who were
shocked by the explosion. They rise into the air, and they don’t know what to do, they fly near the
beach. And they will die later. One second, invisible threat. Just a tiny moment that will change
everything.

My name is Karina Danylchuk, I’m a Ukrainian painter, and art is my passion (and
work). My second passion is nature. Relationships between nature and people inspire
me to create my artwork - watercolor birds. I chose this medium to show how fragile the
bird (and nature) world is: sometimes bold, sometimes transparent, sometimes expressive.
All these conditions I can express in art when words lose power. I also show the
unique personality of each bird.
Also, my watercolor birds set out the difference between people and animals, especially
in how we show emotions. They explain: that when we see a cute bird, she can feel emotions
that don’t compare with her face. We should remember it when we see any animal.
I want to ensure people have more empathy for other species on our planet. I hope they
see how beautiful our world is and how individual every alive creature is. Even the
smallest animals/plants on our planet have a right to live in the way they want.

I love art so much. I started painting (oil and acrylic) 5 years ago and took my inspiration
from nature. I was fascinated by the grace of horses, surprised by forest inhabitants, exited
by the beauty and colors of birds. I depicted about a hundred wonderful creatures .
russian aggression changed everything. Now I can’t let myself paint the beauty of nature
when I hear so much disturbing news. Themes, colors, heroes, and plots of my artworks
have changed.

About artwork
This artwork is dedicated to the issue of suicide in children. Every year, in Ukraine only,
the number of children, who don’t see any sense in living and don’t have any hope for
them, is incessantly increasing.
Right now during the violent occupation, russia’s made thousands of children orphans,
victims of violence (rape victims included) and atrocities. Fortunately, most of them
survived, but how are they supposed to live the rest of their lives?
My artistic journey began since childhood, I always knew that I would become an artist.
There was a time when I thought about leaving art and dissolving with everyday life.
But with the beginning of the war, I had an awakening, I’ve made sure that the best way
I can speak is through art. I started to create art, most of which is about painful subjects,
although there are also fun pieces of art. My style has undergone great changes
during the war, and will probably undergo more. Currently, I am developing as an NFT
artist and actively participate in exhibitions of various formats in order to popularize
Ukrainian art in the world.

How the artist works with the polysemy of the concept of “migration”, searches for new
facets of a multicultural and multiethnic world community.
Dynamic perception, the rejection of settled life, migration - in her artistic practice,
these are tools for the re-actualization of the “mental map”, a way to see more clearly,
resetting again and again the automaticity of perception. Nomadism as an instrument
of cognition and estrangement, a hormone of fresh perception, transferred to the field
of art, allows you to leave room for a miracle, for the manifestation of life itself.

Hundreds of thousands of tons of grain, destroyed and stolen, mutilated land... but

Ghost of the War |
80x120 cm | Mixed Media on canvas
I have always been interested in a man and his world - what shapes him, what drives
him, what he longs for, and what he fears. These questions gradually led me to the path
of figurative art, where the found image becomes a dialogue partner of the viewer,
where at the center of the plot is a certain character who can personify everything that
a person wants to see. For me, it became magic to create different characters, which turn
into guides to the inner world of the person who looks at them.

About artwork
War is like some kind of inevitable force, something moving towards you like an element, silent
and inescapable. Something indescribable, which causes fear and awe, which cannot be bypassed,
which must be passed through. Like a piglet in front of a snake, you stand and look into
its eyes, and they, like a mirror, reflect everything they see: pain, rage, fear, strength, despair,
hope, courage, fear, obsession, sacrifice, love, death, lust to life - everything is in these eyes, everything
that people go through, because everyone has their own limit state, their own mystical
night, their own entrance into their own hell, sometimes without a guarantee of exit.
This picture is a puzzle, it is full of references and semantic parallels, each image can be divided into
a separate plot, but they are all interconnected. It is impossible to fit into a flat picture all that multidimensional
chaos of destruction and transformation that war brings to our lives and our souls.
An orphaned and widowed soul hid in the darkness of war.
All in black, but alive. And no matter what horror is in front of the eyes, the soul knows that life
will still win!

This work, very simply aims to capture how cheap young lives become, during war. Besides
the physical lives lost in combat, the lost potential of young lives who survive war
is devastating.
I have known the shape of Depression from a young age. The ‘Mockingbird’ body of
work, from which the submitted work is extracted, examines the relationship we all
have with mental health and our own subjective childhood mirages.
The primary device I employ, is the constant, presence. I recognise it in others. People
carry a presence with them. Sometimes comfortably familiar enough.
The second device I utilise in my practice, is that of anonymous children.
They symbolise a purer, ideal self, or a moment in childhood. They are frames I re-visit
often, serving as spaces of calibration. Like navigation posts in the past.
The third device is the found substrates of 1950’s sheet music. In them I continually find
a use of language, that when observed through a different context, the language takes
on a sinister irony.
I let chance play a role, as a final device. I create the images in sketch form and then
randomly pick the found pages from the music books - then execute. It is in this combination
of moments that some of the pieces reveal a layer beyond the face value of the
medium, to evoke a resonance.

After the start of the war, the whole country was and is very upset, shocked, and confused.
We did not understand what was happening. In the work presented by me, I
wanted to depict a girl - Ukraine who conveys our common feelings, who is in the dark,
among the ruins. And next to her is our defender - the ZSU (AFU), who gives hope for
the future and supports our country, with his movement showing that: “Believe in me
and don’t be upset. I will do everything to make you smile again.”

I want to show how our country feels. Show pain and hope for a joyful future, trust, and

Pain… |
60х87 cm
Liquid watercolor on satin fabric
Each person whose life was prematurely cut short in this war echoes with pain in the
soul of each of us. The painting “Pain...” was written a month afterthe start of the war,
as an awareness of how many people are leaving forever. Through simple, intuitive
images that do not require knowledge of the historical context or understanding of
national traditions, I want to convey to the world the depth of emotions felt by every
Ukrainian.
The paintings are made on fabric for bed linen because it was impossible to get the
silk I was used to, and I used what was at home. This is the first work from the series
“Circles on Water” in which I explore the phenomenon of collective empathy, when
the sense of one’s own limits of perception is erased, and the grief of one becomes the
white of millions.

I create paintings on various types of textiles using original techniques.
Through my own observations, experience and creativity, I explore the depths and
edges of perception and the problems of today - the interaction of man and nature,
personality and society, and with the beginning of a full-scale invasion, I reflect
on the events and create a series of works where I reveal various aspects of the war.
I look for ways to immerse the viewer in the art. Therefore, in my work, I use different
types of fabric that people come into contact with in everyday life, I study their possibilities
for art and use them to realize my ideas. The technique of painting is always closely
related to the content.

About artwork
During this year, I realized that I could not paint on the subject of war. Such creativity
exhausts me. The soul needs beauty and kindness.
The sketch for this painting was drawn after Ukrainian troops liberated Bucha.
The work conveys the pain and suffering of the Soul of the brutally murdered, raped,
and tortured people. The figure is contoured and transparently, showing the fragility
and vulnerability of both the psyche and the physical body.
The war, with its terrible events, continues. And thoughts that many people die every
day do not allow this wound to heal.
In my art I reflect my inner world, feelings and moods. Every painting is a kind of meditation
of the artist. And, depending on the situation, it either celebrates the beauty of
this world, or allows you to transform your inner feelings and heal your Soul and body
through creativity.

A picture that conveys the essence of Ukraine after February 24. I started painting it the
day before the war, it was supposed to be a beautiful Ukraine. But one day everything
changed. The first week of the war and the picture was full of blood and fear, which can
not be described by words. Life seemed to stop, but rockets, planes and tanks did not.
Destroyed homes of people who are waiting to be hit again after the sirens. The earth
is now covered not with flowers but with tombstone or the signs “ДЕТИ”- children.
February 24 ... and after that Ukraine was stained with blood.
I volunteered a lot, helped refugees. Every day I heard awful stories from people, my
salvation was in art, sit down and draw. That’s how Ukraine turned out for me.
I was born in 1992 and grew up in Ukraine. I have visited many countries in searching
myself and my place. and I’m still looking for my place in this world. Since early childhood
i began to drawing. And I liked it. I was fascinated and spent all my time on it.
When I was 18 I entered the university on designer. For many years I was looking for my
own style of drawing. And i understood don’t have it, i drawing in different styles.
Painting is like meditation for me. Before I start painting, I plan an approximate view
of the picture. But in the process of working, I change everything according to my own
feeling. As if something tells me how to use the brush next. My paintings as a mascot
and motivation for a person. Like peace, quiet and great or magic atmosphere. my
paintings are filled with positive energy, love, and dreams. It is what the world needs.
Another fact I paint not only on canvas but also on clothes. For me it does not matter
where my picture is depicted, it is still filled with its magic that helps the world

About artwork
Art Opens Your Heart and Feeds Your Mind. Look ing at art provides an opportunity to
exercise critical thinking, experience a renewed self-awareness, and potentially even
a deeper connection to others and their experiences, as we share what we feel and try to
interpret what we see.
The most important influence on art is society itself. Just like human beliefs, art changes
over time. Being an archive of society’s collective memory, its movement shifts with the
artists who bring them to life.
Art after conflict creates a unique opportunity to express the pain of loss and war, share
the burden and potentially begin to heal from it. Many forms of art can circumnavigate
language and cultural differences. Art is emotions- Art is heART...Art is hope ... art is
survival... for all world & in my art too...

This war makes no sense. The aggression was not provoked, the neighbour country went
crazy, all of it. I paint what I see, what makes me stop doing everything and sit down to
paint, trying to understand, why. But there’s no answer.

With the beginning of a full-scale war, changes took place in everyone without exception.
I also experienced such internal changes and fractures. Before that, she worked
with children’s illustrations or with light stories about her own experiences. The war
became an impetus for deep dives into one’s own self-identity and the study of folk
spiritual practice. Every Ukrainian had to adjust his own internal antennas to strengthen
the foundation in the fight against evil.

I work in abstract figurative work. Through female images, I convey psycho-emotional
states. Which I myself experience. For me, the female figure
is about life, gender, strength and depth of emotions. Figures without clarity,
as the personification of a memory or a hint of existence, or a strong
immersion in an emotional state. I research and reflect on the question of how memory
works in emotional upheavals and how it works in a state of self-preservation.
I like to mix materials and techniques in my work. Somehow creating chaos
with a sense of lack of order. But the repetition of lines or ornaments balances
all anxiety, gives a feeling of control over the situation. I like to combine
acrylic and oil paints, oil pastel. Work with semi-dry and expressive strokes.
In my work, I practice moving from an idea. But I always leave a percentage for internal
impulse in work. Therefore, my works are filled with an emotional component.

Digital painting
Since the full-scale invasion, my work has shifted toward difficult topics, namely the
war in Ukraine. Now all my illustrations are related to war because I visually tell people
from all over the world what my country is going through right now. The illustration
of “Defender” is directly related to the theme of war. The work shows how strongly the
Defenders are currently protecting our country, as well as neighboring countries, from
the terrorist enemy. Every day, the Defenders sacrifice their lives to protect our sleep,
give us a new morning, and give us the opportunity to work. I want this work to remind
us of the Defenders and give faith in the victory of Ukraine.

general, it is quite important for me to talk visually about war because, in this way, I tell
about the experiences of people in my country to a wide audience. Now there are quite
a lot of requests for illustrations on military topics because this topic is now important
all over the world. I take part in various exhibitions, mostly abroad, which talk about

About artwork
This artwork describes the real experience of survival of me and my family in the basement
under the garage in Mariupol, when there was nothing - electricity, water, little
food, no mobile communication, no Internet, no heating, gas, and it was -10 degrees
below zero. Then you didn’t know whether you would survive at all, whether you would
be killed in the basement or when you would try to crawl out of it. Unfortunately, the
experience of being in a basement, but with more humane conditions was repeated in
Kyiv during massive shelling. This is exactly what my artwork is about.

Ukrainian doll |
318x148 cm
Before the full-scale invasion, I painted in a completely different manner, highlighting
the problems and questions of today’s Ukrainian youth, who found themselves in the
conditions of post-Soviet stagnation. She took the subject of interpersonal relations, relationships,
fear of the future. She dedicated some works to her hometown - Lysychansk.
After the morning of February 24, something in me died and came back to
life. I don’t know what happened, but my drawing style has changed since
the first work. The lines became heavy, a lot of red color was added, and the
shine in the eyes of the characters of the paintings disappeared completely.
And then the boom began, the first charity exhibition took place in Los Angeles,
later exhibitions were held in Europe and in the cities of Ukraine. Closely
cooperated with “Gareleya.Neotodryosh” with “Center of Joint Actions”.
Unfortunately, the subject of my paintings has not changed at all in the last year - I write
about war. But I dream about the time when it will be relevant to paint pictures about
our victory and reconstruction.

About artwork
When the war came to me for the first time, in 2014, the paper dolls in the basement
became my psychological hook that prevented me from falling off the roof from the
constant explosions. In this work, I combined my naivety trampled by cruel reality and
lost childhood.

35x26 cm
Watercolor on paper
Before 24.02.2022 I was a botanical watercolor artist.
My art was like a peaceful meditation, concentration on the beauty of nature. I wanted
my paintings to bring joy, coziness and calmness to peoples’ homes, to make them stop
their everyday rush and relax for a moment by exploring the small details of a botanical
illustration.
l don’t do botanical illustration anymore because there is no more peaceful meditation
inside. Now my art is about the way we live through this surreal reality between regular
big-city life, blackouts, air raid alerts and news from the frontline.
I express these emotions with paint on the paper, and I want to make people think about
what is happening in Ukraine right now and how they can help us.

About artwork
It seems to be footage from an action movie or a video game. The main character is following
the car of his friends under a heavy sky into hell itself: helicopters and rockets
are flying overhead, something is constantly exploding, smoke is rising here and there
on the horizon.
But this is not a movie. This is reality. The reality of people who less than a year ago
from this moment simply lived their lives, had dreams, made plans.
Stop and think about one of the 73 000 people lived in Bakhmut before February 24
2022, as well as in other Ukrainian cities and now are homeless. About those who lost
everything they had or even someone dear. About those who lost teir lives.
About the reality of those who are risking their lives defending our country from russians
there, near Bakhmut, flying helicopters or driving in a pick-up truck there, to hell
itself, where everything is burning and exploding...

What colors and textures does life paint on my canvas? What am I worrying about today?
Am I experiencing discrimination? Or am I maybe discriminating against someone?
Does it mean there is no inequality if I don’t feel unevenness? What is feminism? Do
I want to speak out about the role of women? How can I do this effectively? How do I
express myself so that I can be heard?
I write prose. When I want to speak louder, I paint a new portrait that manifests my
thoughts. Then I gather those paintings in the collection that make a statement about
my ideas.
I argue and agree and argue with myself again and again. And with a new thought or
question, I get to work again.

About artwork
Ever since the 24th of February, 2022, I have been having surrealistic dreams woven
from fear and despair, courage and dignity, infinite power, and helplessness simultaneously,
from the triumph of humanity and its complete defeat.
I perceive the above in colored lines, spots, and bands that flicker like some old television
screen. I do not attribute such an experience to exhaustion.
Even when I can rest one day, I will not be the person I was before that fateful day.

About artwork
At the beginning of the war, I began to paint Ukrainian cities in the image of women.
It was not, at first, a series. I drew what was most confusing and destructive. When the
tears ended, I began to transfer my pain to canvases. The first was the city of Bucha, then
my native Mykolaiv, Boyarka, a town near Kyiv, where the war caught my family and
me... With these works, I tried to pay tribute to people from different cities in Ukraine,
telling my story...

I’m a Ukrainian painter from Kyiv based in Bratislava, Slovakia. Working mainly with
watercolors and soft pastels.
Life inspires me in all its forms and shapes. In my paintings I express continuance
of life and depth of feelings reflecting in nature and watercolours help me with it as
they continue living their own life on the paper. You can be sad or happy, strong or
weak - when you look to the nature you always find reflection of your feelings in it.

About artwork
This painting is not large, but it contains the history of many couples, families, and families.
A short time of farewell with indescribable longing and hugs. I want to remember
each other’s warmth, smell, and breath. I don’t want to let go. And the tears roll, roll by
themselves. There is no one for the two at this moment. There is only that terrible word
when someone says “it’s time”. And then waiting.
My watercolors have always been about what surrounds me. Rural landscapes,
flowers, river. Watercolor can emphasize these plots. I tried to recreate the kindness
and sincerity of the area where I live. And since February 24 last year, everything has
changed. There was more pain. Anxiety. But I try to paint native landscapes with even
greater trepidation and zeal. As if I want to make it before they are still broken. And
I draw flowers because their buds continue to bloom no matter what. In nature, everything
is according to plan, everything takes its turn. And I draw it. I am drawing a
village house, only now I know that it is light and warm. I want it to be so. My worries
still remain on paper. Something I never thought about. Separation, despair, ruins.

Kings Without a Country
22.9x30.5 cm
“Kings Without a Country” explores themes of loss, displacement, patriarchy, and the human
experience of war. Borrowing from my own experience as refugee after the Vietnam war, the
work tells the story of men who have lost everything — identity, power, country, homes, and
loved ones. However, the work is not about their redemption as it also alludes to the fall of the
patriarchy representing a larger theme of the disruption of traditional power structures who
are mostly to blame for the atrocities of war.
The semi-figurative elements in the work pay respect to the human stories of war. The color
and marks highlights the emotional — fear, anger, despair, confusion, sadness, hate, love— and
psychological toll of war. Influences from folk and graphic arts adds cultural specificity and
sheds light on the lost cultural and personal histories that often accompany war.

Tat-Dat Nguyen is a Vietnamese refugee and immigrant whose artwork explores a diverse
range of themes, from the personal and intimate to the universal and mystical.
Through his practice, Nguyen grapples with issues including migration, identity, memory,
and mythology, drawing on his own experiences as well as the experiences of others
in the global diaspora.
In his work, Tat-Dat often incorporates elements of mysticism and surrealism to suspend
belief and propose deeper layers of meanings. He also draws on the influence of
folk and graphic arts as meditations on cultural histories, contemporary culture, and
media. He employs expressionism to create a sense of depth and texture in his pieces,
using shapes, marks, colors, and textures to create complex, dynamic compositions that
express the hopes, fears, and struggles of the human condition, while inviting the viewer
to engage with the work on multiple levels.
Through his art, Nguyen seeks to explore the complex personal and universal human
experience, while also creating a space for healing and reflection.

One of the first works from the twenty-fourth... Forcing myself to disconnect from reality,
she recreated dreams. It seems that too little pain came out? Did you have fun? I
will hide it so that no one sees it. Not fun now. Not fun!! In just six months, I understood
the essence: when will we get out of the pit? When will “someone” come to pull us out?
Never, unless we do it ourselves. So, I already know how to switch, so why not share this
skill with others? May it be nice and warm! Let all the flowers bloom! Let every family
be happy! Let there be spring!
The search for harmony is my main criterion. To satisfy the viewer, it is important that

About artwork
It is necessary to keep the lights on the catastrophes of the conflict. Continue to tell the
stories of the people involved, so as not to take anything for granted. The war in Ukraine
is an extremely complex and varied dramatic reality. Our responsibility is to keep a discourse
on conflict alive, which tells the story of the fragile not only in terms of numbers
but above all in terms of stories, emotions and ethics.
My artistic practice proposes a reflection on the theme of fragility and fragmentation
in our contemporaneity, combined with an in-depth study of the themes of conflict and
war.
The global crisis situation imposes on us a new vision of life that is totally distorted,
broken, broken in many points and constantly in the balance. We have been shattered
by these major crises and so we remain.
To elaborate this rupture, it is first of all necessary to recognize the current fragility, as
a new contemporary paradigm capable of proposing a new connection between individuals.
Rethinking fragility as something positive and powerful that can redefine a new aesthetic.
I attended the course of studies in Graphic Journalism at the Academy of Fine Arts in
Bologna. Geopolitics, migration of peoples and conflicts are in my opinion the new categories
of the contemporary world.
I mainly work with ambient spaces and large series of paintings. I use space as a geopolitical
space, with representations of people and crowds, movements on the ground and
the influence of geography on the actions of social groups.
I mainly concentrate my study on bodies, always represented in fragmentation, cut,
separated into pieces and numbered. Fragility is exposed, and bodies suffer the violence
of what is around them. I work on the idea of diorama. Each painting must be arranged
within a specially designed and structured environment. A reconstruction that can give
the necessary premises and the right atmosphere.

I see you | Я бачу тебе
100x100 cm | Acrylic on canvas
Art is my voice. I declare my values through art. For me, the most important thing is
that an artwork evokes emotions, has a concept, or idea behind it. That’s why I chose
to combine surrealism and symbolism. I bring up topics of life and death, physical and
spiritual worlds, self-expression, authenticity, and freedom. My characters represent
both human beings and spirits, for whom the universe is a place of origin. I paint mostly
women, because for me, female energy and a female body are very powerful and, unfortunately,
feminine power is not valued by society to the extent it should have been
valued. My characters don’t have hair or clothes, because it brings cultural and time line
aspects, but my characters are timeless and boundless. Nudity is a metaphor of being
seen, being free to express one’s unique nature, being naked physically and emotionally.
My characters seek freedom on all levels: freedom to change, to love, to give and receive,
freedom to express themselves in a variety of forms, external freedom and independence,
and internal freedom. My purpose is to show how much wisdom and love can be
discovered not only in joy, but also in pain.

About artwork
The war has changed my relationships both with others and with myself. The war requires
people to connect with innate wisdom and authentic values. There is no time for hesitation or
doubt, because it might cost you life. There is no more time for illusions and energy for its maintenance.
Old personal identities, as well as their surroundings, have to change. Because the free
world needs free people, and in order to attain freedom one needs a clear vision. This painting
is about trust and the ability to see both the inner and the external worlds, to see the way out
through the darkness. An eye on the back of a character symbolizes the ability to trust yourself
(which is vitally important) or rely on somebody, the necessity to observe yourself, people and
situations from different angles. Knowing who you are helps to adjust and go through life with a
deeper understanding of what is going on. Definitely, last year reminded many of us about personal
and collective “unlearned lessons”, reminded us of who we are and what is worth fighting
for. Also, the artwork is about seeing all parts of oneself, at least being willing to explore both
“ugly“ and “beautiful “parts of your personality. Not only do we need to see, but we also need
to find inner strength to let go of illusions and become comfortable with being seen (the eyes
around the character are a metaphor for relationships with the world).

The concept of the work “Scream”: During the war in Ukraine, many civilians died, including
more than 400 children. In the foreground of the painting, a burnt field of sunflowers
is a symbol of all those families and children who died. Because the sunflower
and each seed is a symbol of the family. Every burnt grain is someone’s lost life. The girl
screams to the sky about the senselessness of war, about the pain of losses. Also her cry
for hope for peace, plea for peace, cry for help and hope for peace! Behind the girl, the
field and the sky as symbols of Peace and Happiness!

War is not a natural disaster; it is power, madness, and death. War is made by the
people. The people who fire rockets at homes. People who drop bombs on energy
stations. People who occupy another country’s territories.
And these people should be punished for their actions. Destroying a neighboring
country with a growing democratic polity makes it hard for dictators to live.
Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine changed me, my mind, my priorities, and my life.

Usually, animals are perceived as imperfect speechless creatures, and people look down
on them, considering themselves the masters of this world. For me, animals are not
primitive creatures that live only by instincts, but living beings that, like us, go through
life, gain experience and evolve. And the fact that they are silent does not mean that
they have nothing to say to us. This is a whole universe that we are unlikely to be able to
fully understand. I cry when I see beached whales. Why do they do this? What do they
want to tell us? I do not know. But I want to know. Therefore, working on this topic is
my personal research, because I want to get answers to such questions, and I have many
of them. I’m not sure if I can get all the answers, but I’ll keep drawing. I want animals
to communicate with us from the canvases of my works. I want them to talk about how
they feel good or what hurts them. They spoke without words. And let each of us hear
his own.

About project
Like many Ukrainian artists, when the war started, I stopped painting. When she was able to
return to painting, she narrowed the subject of her paintings to animalism. Animals fascinate
with their natural wildness, frenzy, the way they show their rage and care. All these qualities
are very similar to those that Ukrainians began to demonstrate at the beginning of the war: the
thirst for life, the ability to fight to the last, to defend their territory, their children at the cost of
their lives, to go to the aid of their neighbors. The war awakened these deep natural instincts in
Ukrainians who live not only in Ukraine but all over the world. Through this picture, I want to
convey to the viewer the infinite strength and power that every creation of nature has. Animals
already have it as a base. But a person has a choice to take it or not. And here everyone makes
the right decision for himself.

I, a graphic artist, create illustrations in various forms—from a book to a poster, or an
independent work of art. In my works, I reproduce images and use stylistics, depending
on the theme of the book I am working with. I am also very interested in architecture,
urban landscapes and history, so I have repeatedly turned to these topics in my projects.
Recently, my creative interests have included the themes of the garden as an urban phenomenon
and the poetry of Ukrainian writers of the executed revival. Before the war,
my creativity and the topics I worked with were mainly related to books. After February
24, 2023, I began to work as an illustrator with the theme of today and depict in my
works what surrounds me, what happens in our country every day, what hurts.

About project
Almost 100 years ago, in the 1920s, during the rise of Ukrainian culture, the building “Slovo” was
built in Kharkiv, which was intended for writers and artists. The building had a symbolic letter
“C” (“word”) in the plan. The Ukrainian elite settled under one roof - among them, such famous
writers and artists as M. Khvylovy, M. Semenko, V. Sosyura, L. Kurbas and many others. The “Slovo”
house was originally an ideal place for the cultural elite of Ukraine. But their lives turned into
horror in an instant: persecution, arrests, exile, executions. As it turned out later, the house was
created so that it was more convenient for the NKVD authorities to control. Yes, out of 66 existing
apartments of the “Slova” building, residents of 40 apartments were repressed. Over the course of
five years, on Stalin’s personal orders, about 30,000 Ukrainian intellectuals were exterminated.
Almost 100 years have passed since that moment, but history repeats itself again.
On March 7, 2022, the Russian occupiers shelled the Slovo building, every day they destroy
Kharkiv and other cities of Ukraine with rockets and bombs. The methods of the Russian government
have not changed—they destroy culture, shoot and murder people. However, this time
they will not succeed!

A picture of a person from my family who defended Mariupol and is now in captivity.
The portrait was created shortly before the capture. Initially, it had a graphic and linear
appearance. But when my tears got to work, they created watercolor stains, which I then
strengthened. After that, the image was not clear and blurred, as well as the future fate
of the person.
After February 24, 2022, I ran away with my children to Vilnius without art materials.
Here I bought some water-based markers and a couple of drawing pads. This is all that
I could afford materially and physically to transport with me. Because there is nowhere
to store large-format works. Therefore, now my works exist in the form of sketches, or
graphic drawings with a watercolor effect. The color range is limited and hot, because
these colors correspond to the fury in my soul, fire and blood.

The painting “Close the sky over Ukraine” was painted after the first missile attack by

people. The picture shows the Zaporizhzhia NPP in peacetime. We do not know in what
condition she is now. Even the IAEA mission could not solve anything. How will it all
end? Close the sky over Ukraine! Take care of our Earth, people, and nature, not only of

I am a Ukrainian artist. I have been living in the Czech Republic since 2008. I took up
painting after the birth of my son. Painting helped me cope with postpartum depression,
you can say it saved me and gave me a new life. Painting calms me down, gives
meaning to my life. I tried to draw every day. I try different techniques and materials.
I like to explore new things and I don’t limit myself. Probably, this is a feature of my
character. I want to create something that can resonate with another person. Before the
full-scale war in Ukraine, I painted positive pictures: landscapes and flowers. But now
I have paintings created with great pain or little joy. War brings a lot of pain, but even a
small victory for our soldiers gives joy and hope. Unfortunately, the war is not over, and
more paintings will be on this topic. But I will continue to create just beauty.
My paintings were presented in London and Ljubljana, as well as at many online exhibitions.

This abstract work is dedicated to a person’s internal struggle with external circumstances,

I, like most Ukrainians, met February 24 at 4 in the morning in bed. It was a shock to
me, because until the end I could not believe in the possibility of such a scenario. Being
able to evacuate, the only thing I could do to at least momentarily numb my pain was
art. Starting from February 24, it is very difficult to create works that are not related to
war. This is what confuses and hurts me, although I am not physically in Ukraine. Since
the beginning of the full-scale invasion, I have also changed the way I speak. I started
creating my works in the virtual space, using the gray color in the moron. Subsequently,
3D models are superimposed on photographs of war-damaged buildings. I wanted to
create something completely new. Highlight the horror of war in a different way, not
through an illustration or drawing, but rather by using the power of the latest technologies
and the virtual dimension, which allows you to model objects as realistically as
possible. Thanks to this way of creating work, I manage to convey as much as possible
the cold and ugly spirit that embodies the Russian measure and everything connected
with it.

About artwork
There is nothing more disgusting than being ignored and overlooked.
After all, from the Russian point of view, it is not only the mutilated and erased Ukrainian
cities along with their inhabitants, it is also Georgia, Syria, Ichkeria, as well as the Soviet
Government and Tsarist Russia with an insatiable thirst for foreign territories.
This is a story about how ignoring the problem leads to the big disgusting reality we
have now. A story about how sometimes you underestimate the scale of the threat and
how this threat turns into a catastrophe that destroys all living things around.

I Stay |
60x60 cm
“I Stay” is an autobiographical painting. Since the beginning of the full-scale war, I tried to leave
the country several times to take my children away from the terrible events. But it happened
that every attempt ended up in the hospital for me. After the fourth time, I gave up trying, and
decided to stay at home despite logic, common sense and fear for my children’s lives.
Psychosomatics? Intuition? Fear of uncertainty?
I think it’s definitely not about being nervous about the unknown, because I’m an experienced
traveler, fluent in English and have no problems communicating with foreigners. I believe that
the issue lies in something that is deeper, more important and beyond the usual material things.
It is difficult for me to explain logically why this happened, so I expressed these experiences and
reflections in my painting “I Stay”.
On it, I portray myself as someone who, on some higher spiritual level, has grown with my
home, my native land. Therefore, the colors of the background seem to permeate the entire figure,
and the limbs, like roots, “grow” into the lower part of the canvas.
And the whole figure seems to say: “This is my place. I am at home. I stay…”

At current stage of my art life I try different styles, forms and images and on the way
to my certain personal style. It should be mentioned, I am absolutely enjoying this period
of searching the best visual forms to express my own inner self in its interaction
with the surrounding world. y art is represented by two main directions: displaying the
beauty of nature; my personal reflections to some events or thoughts.
To display the beauty in its best, I create floral art, mostly it is about flowers or fruits
from my parents` garden.

About artwork
I collected meaningful symbols of this brutal war for liberty: the leopard as a sign of
help with armament, metal from Azovstal, images of the mother’s womb and nature,
the Akhtyrsky local history museum, my pattern as many thoughts about, and a sea of
tears and scratches.
Museum staff and volunteers in Akhtyrka evacuated the exhibits and preserved the
museum images with the project “wounded culture.” The grit of Azovstal’s defenders
was incredible. And all of Ukraine now consists of such stories and exploits.
For me, the windows are individuals because there are always people behind the windows.
In addition to being an homage to René Magritte, I deliberately turned to existing
work to emphasize that this has already happened in human history. Different societies
have already stood for their liberty, and Ukraine can also go this way successfully.

Dark art allows us to “sightsee” the ideas that frighten us. Here, we can safely face our
fears. Exploring the dark side also develops our creative problem solving and coping
skills. This type of art awakens a part of the imagination many of us avoid.
I create nightmare-inspired art not only for these reasons, but also for mental health
awareness and healing. There is great comfort in knowing that we are not alone. Belonging
is a basic human need. To be accepted for who we are includes the creepy thoughts,
the sadness, depression, distress, or shame.
To ignore our own dark side is to reject a part of us. If we do not delve into these areas,
we invite them to fester in silence. The darkness can manifest as addictions, self-hatred,
anxiety, and a host of other issues.

About artwork
This is part of a photographic series named THE FRAGILITY OF LIFE. This is visually a bit of a
departure from the type of art I usually create. But in a world where we can follow every gruesome
minute of every horrific tragedy on the news, I could not help but be emotionally involved
in the Ukrainian war. As the battle has continued, the media coverage has moved on and it has
been pushed to the back burner. For the Ukraine people, it is still in the on the front-page raging
on.
FRAGILITY OF LIFE was born from horrors of war. The remnants of battles are cold, silent,
and filled with darkness and des pair. The collection addresses an unpleasant subject that most
prefer not to exhibit but it is our obligation to communicate critical issues to the public. The art
community not only has the ability but the responsibility to remind society of the consequences
of war in a unique way.
I grew up during the Viet Nam war. It has stayed with me in ways I cannot articulate. I know
some younger people are unable to emotionally engage fully in Ukraine because it is so far from
home. There are other threats looming. Are we prepared?

My unbreakable city |
Watercolor on paper
Kharkiv. Mutilated and partially destroyed, but clean and blooming. Washed with tears for the
fallen civilians and defenders, but supported by the hopes of those who did not go or return,
and the dreams of those who are still waiting to return. Seven months under daily shelling,
but with constant faith in Victory. With daily endless sirens, but symphony concerts in the underground
parking and a Christmas tree in the subway. Cleans the streets and plants flowers
under shelling. Restores broken houses and communications. Virtually empty to the point of
dread in March. Reviving, illuminated by the smiles of youth in January. With smoke from
explosions in a clear blue sky. A city that didn’t get scared and didn’t give up. Which caused
hatred and revenge. But it persevered. Hero city. My such a native, such an unbreakable city.
This Derzhprom building in the very center of the city has become a symbol of Kharkiv’s indomitability.
Since the beginning of the war, I have not left the city, I live with him through all
the shelling and events. The strength and power of my city does not allow me to give up even
when it is very difficult. At the same time, our city is made so invincible by its inhabitants, who
believe in and choose Victory, each in their own place. Recently, this silhouette of Derzhprom
appeared on my arm in the form of a tattoo, as a symbol of the indomitability of Ukraine and
Kharkiv. As a reminder of my strength gained in this war.

The central object of my artistic research is a person’s path to himself through emotions,
impressions, meanings and its duality, contradiction and agreement. My natural
ability to observe this path, to trace its features in various manifestations, constantly
inspires reflections that find their imprint in my paintings. For me, everything around
me is full of meanings and emotions. I see them in people, nature, architecture, objects,
details, color.

No War! |
14х21 cm
My name is Evgeniya. I was born in Odessa.
I am inspired by nature and people, traveling gives me new impressions, strengths and
ideas. For more than 4 years I have managed to combine my two passions - painting
and travelling.
When I paint portraits, landscapes or plants, it seems to me that I am displaying a frozen
Time. Each of my works is an opportunity for me to mentally return to this already
different place, space and again feel the feelings experienced. Each of my sketches or
paintings allow me to see what has already disappeared or has become different.

About artwork
Before the war, my art was very far from social problems and politics. But when the
war started, every time I read the news, I wanted to scream from the pain of my heart,
and for the first time I put my thoughts on paper. No person should see murders, rapes,
tortures, hear explosions overhead and run away from the war to no one knows where...
but children shouldn’t even more so... How will everything seen and experienced be
reflected on these children? For children who survived the war? What future awaits
them? After all, the future of our children is also our future...

About artwork
Recently, I want to illustrate not the most terrible events that are happening around me,
but the internal state, even if everything seems to be ok on the outside.

Before the full-scale invasion began, I was creating illustrations for a Kodeco company.
