Yellow Press Mark II
Alec Hogg
How do we sort media’s trusted
wheat from the fake news chaff?
Providing parallels with the Yellow
Press era of a century ago, Hermanus
resident Alec will share advice on
how you can avoid becoming
a ‘useful idiot’ serving the agendas
of well-funded vested interests.
Alec has been immersed in digital
media since 1996, first through
his online publishing pioneer,
Moneyweb, followed by the launch
of BizNews in 2013. He has enjoyed
a front-row seat as the news
environment transformed from
a trusted source of information into
today’s ‘anything goes’ chaos.
Mandela and South African
Freedom
Sidney Luckett
Sidney will talk about his involvement
in the Anti-Apartheid struggle and
his role in the formation of the United
Democratic Front (UDF) in the 1980s.
He will summarise the UDF’s vision
of a non-racial, non-sexist, democratic
South Africa and its key activities,
including the important role of the
media (especially photography) and
symbolism, with two focal points:
the person of Nelson Mandela
and the Freedom Charter.
The Anti-Apartheid struggle will also
be compared with contemporary
Climate Change campaigns – both
their strengths and weaknesses.
Venue: Hermanus Golf Club
Mandela and Kurdish
Freedom
Sidney is an academic, activist and former director in provincial government,
who now combines his social and environmental research and activism with
photography.
‘I am part of the Kurdish struggle.
I am one of you.’ – Mandela at
a Kurdish Festival.
Kurdistan straddles Turkey, Syria, Iraq
and Iran. All of those countries have
racist, sexist, and anti-democratic
regimes.
Sidney will focus on the vision of
the Kurdish Freedom Movement,
captured in the slogan Jin, Jiyan,
Azadi (Women, Life, Freedom)
which has spread across Europe,
sparked by the death in detention
of Jina (Mahsa) Amini (in Iran) for
not wearing her hijab correctly.
