read from, this set of extraordinary
poems by Stephen Watson,
whose celebrated recasting of
these original San texts paints the
long-gone speakers back into life.
These narratives of the /Xam
branch of San ‘Bushmen’ were
originally recorded by Dr WH
Bleek when, as prisoners, they
were brought to live and work
in his garden in Mowbray in the
1870s.
Transplanted from the Karoo,
these vanished story-tellers’
longing for their faraway home,
gods and families pulse through
these poems.

The Soul of
Jan Smuts

100 years ago on 25 February 1923, Jan
Smuts stood on Table Mountain and
delivered one of his most famous orations.
Today the ‘Religion of the Mountain’ speech
– as it came to be known – is an important
clue to the heart of this great South
African statesman. Smuts has been dubbed
everything from ‘irreligious’ to ‘devout
believer’. He was not a church-goer in the
conventional sense. Table Mountain fulfilled
that need – it was his cathedral, his ‘Holy
of Holies’.
This FynArts talk seeks to uncover the ‘inner’
Smuts. What lay behind – or within –
the legendary Boer General, the maligned
Prime Minister, the holistic thinker,
the loving father who endured enormous
personal sadness, not to speak of the
rejection of his own volk?

Hermanus has acted as a muse
for many artists and will be richly
illustrated with artworks depicting
various scenes of the town.
