The now well-established Sculpture on the Cliffs project
of Hermanus FynArts has not only brought something
culturally-different to the town over more than ten years,
but has generated many conversations – and debates!
Some of the artists who have contributed to this year’s
exhibition will join Melvyn to talk about the theme and
their interpretation, as well as how they see the role of
their public sculpture in social well-being.
Melvyn Minnaar will be in conversation with Wilma,
Jacques, Conrad, Jaco and Sophia.
Bina Genovese will open Sculpture on the Cliffs 2023
directly after this discussion at Gearing’s Point.

I’ve Seen That Face Before

From early sketches made to apprehend suspects in
criminal cases or identify the unknown deceased, art has
had a significant, but frequently misunderstood, role
to play in forensic identification, and technology has
expanded the definition of the lab or studio in which
such work is done.
In this illustrated talk, artist,
curator and forensic facial
imaging expert Dr Kathryn
Smith introduces the
history of Forensic Art, and
demonstrates the impact
that facial reconstructions
can have on forensic
identification and archaeological research, from
contributing to the investigative process, to restoring
a sense of personhood to the unknown or unidentified.
