Dear FynArts Supporters 

What a joy it is to welcome you back to Hermanus FynArts and the first full programme of events for 

some time. We have taken great pleasure in once again putting together a bumper programme and 

we hope attending the events will give you as much pleasure. 

This year we stand on the cusp of the next decade of Hermanus FynArts – the Festival, the Development 

Fund and the FynArts Gallery. It is a time to look forward and plan for the next ten years of growth and 

development, of presenting top-class festivals of relevance to the widest audience, of bringing the amazing artists from 

across all disciplines that South Africa is blessed to call ‘our own’. And – as we have learnt over the years – to embrace 

change in whatever expected and unexpected form it might take. 

A heartful thank you to our generous and loyal sponsors, patrons, lifetime and annual friends; artists and presenters; 

media, advisors, many volunteers and Overstrand Municipality – and of course, to you, our old and new festival-goers. 

FynArts and its projects continues from strength to strength due to the vital contribution made by you, our FynArts 

family. 

This year the programme offers events especially for children and teenagers. These are clearly marked in the following 

pages, as well as a number of other suitable events at weekends offering reduced-price tickets for scholars. 

New events on the programme include a short early morning series of topical talks: Coffee and Croissants (pg24), 

a short programme of gallery events (pg 67), as well as a fun competition (pg 68). Through the Development Fund, 

we are embarking on a new collaboration with Warwick’s Chef School (pg 41). 

Presenting a ten-day arts festival is a team effort. 

Firstly, thank you to Chantel Louskitt. Her abiding loyalty, hard work, and acute sense of humour has carried many 

a day – and very often the festival too. Thank you also to Hedda Mittner who has come aboard and assisted us for the 

past six months. Since 2013, she has fully supported the festival in her capacity as content editor of The Village News. 

Hedda knows the nitty-gritty of the programme and how it is put together through writing copiously – and with 

passion – over the past thirteen years. 

As the festival programme continues to expand, so do the tasks of the many behind-the-scene supporters. We are

Opening Concert

Family Concert 

Richard Cock has been noted over the years for introducing young 

artists to the public, and this year will be no exception. Pieter and Ashlin, 

two very talented young artists from UCT, will take to the stage with the 

FynArts Festival Orchestra. 

They will play Tartini’s famous and fiendish Devil’s Trill Sonata for violin 

and orchestra, a cello concerto by CPE Bach, and a double concerto by 

Vivaldi. The orchestra will complement these works with the famous 

Fantasia on Greensleeves by Vaughan Williams, and an early symphony 

by Mozart. 

The opening concert is always a highlight on the programme and a 

wonderful way to celebrate not only the start of another FynArts Festival 

but also South Africa’s amazing young talent, just waiting to bloom. 

Sincere thanks to David and Sal Carter, Patrons of FynArts for 

generously supporting the Opening Concert. 

Richard Cock will introduce young and 

old to the orchestra in a relaxed and fun 

manner. Come and discover who plays 

what, how the various instruments make 

their sounds, and what they all sound like

involves movement, singing and dancing!

The Mzansi Tenors have been wowing audiences around 

the country and now return for the FynArts Festival with 

a programme curated for the sold-out season at Theatre 

on the Bay. 

The programme of famous tenor arias and South African 

favourites also includes great tenor hits made famous by 

Enrico Caruso, such as Santa Lucia, Granada, Ave Maria, 

and a tribute to Caruso by Lucio Dalla – a fitting inclusion 

in the year of the 150th anniversary of Enrico Caruso’s 

birth. Don’t miss this special concert hosted by Richard 

Cock.

From Passacaglia, Halvorsen’s ‘impossible duet’, to 

Piazzolla’s Libertango, the eclectic Salt & Pepper Duo 

is able to capture the beauty of famed arias and string 

works, by way of fascinating arrangements. 

Being versatile is one of the essential pillars on which 

Salt & Pepper Duo is built, thus performing a range of 

works from demanding repertoire for violin and viola 

(written specifically for this somewhat unusual pairing 

of instruments), to audience favourites. 

Maja and Samantha have been playing together for over 

fifteen years since first playing at youth orchestra courses 

from a young age. They are now both professional 

musicians based in Cape Town. The duo has performed 

at venues such as Erin Hall, the Baxter Concert Hall, and 

St George’s Cathedral.

This vibrant intimate theatre production tells the oral 

history of the development of Hermanus. Energetic song, 

dance and compelling storytelling takes the audience 

on a historical journey of discovery, highlighting pioneers 

like Hermanus Pieters, Sir William Hoy and the mystical 

character of Bientang. 

Listen to tales of local fishermen, the everyday lives of 

women and landmark buildings such as The Marine 

Hotel and the Sanatorium – today the Windsor Hotel. 

Some liberties have been taken and a pinch of proudly 

South African spice added. This is a thoroughly localis-lekker 

production. 

With: Filicity Tobias, Esihle Badlati, Yonela Sentse, 

Remarce Marais and Faigon Kees. 

Writer-Director: Celeste Slabber-Loriston 

Pieter Dirk Uys, 2023 Legacy Award recipient, will be back 

at FynArts with a new show. As expected from his oneperson 

performances, this show features not only PDU, 

but also a cluster of topical characters, male, female and 

political. Having been active in live theatre since the late 

1960s, he is not surprised when people now ask: ‘When 

will you retire?’ His answer is short and sweet: ‘Not retire. 

Retread!’ This 2023 performance will also show Uys at his 

77-year-old best: laughing at fears and embracing facts 

with his tongue firmly in your cheek. 

A sell-by date on food usually means: throw way. 

A sell-buy date in PDU’s hands will reflect a new post- 

Covid energy that, while his audition might be over 

and the disease to please has been cured, proves that 

a PDU show is always a highlight to remember.

An Evening of Jazz

Performances 

French-born cellist David Pinoit and South African-born 

pianist Tertia Visser Downie bring you a delightful 

programme of romantic cello and piano duos. 

Tertia is a renowned performer and collaborative pianist 

who regularly performs with award-winning musicians. 

She is also a lecturer at the South African College of 

Music at the University of Cape Town. 

David is a versatile cellist performing in orchestras, 

chamber music ensembles and as a soloist. David is 

also teaching at schools in Cape Town. David and Tertia 

regularly perform chamber music together. 

Escape the cold and come and enjoy some warm 

music composed by Rachmaninov, Schumann, Prokofiev, 

Faure, and more. 

This Afro-jazz and soul-rock trio is fresh on the music 

scene, formed by multi-award winning artist and 

producer, Mark Fransman. He will be joined by Paul 

Tizzard on drums and Eugene Ackerman on bass. 

Inspired by their love for the Cape goema music 

(and culture), they produce a sound that is uniquely 

South African. A multi-instrumentalist as well as 

a composer and vocalist, Mark plays the piano, guitar, 

saxophone, flute, bass clarinet and tunes percussion 

– sometimes all at the same time! 

This entertaining concert will appeal to a wide audience 

and introduce music lovers to a new sonic and social 

perspective.

This hilariously entertaining theatre production has been hailed by critics 

as ‘the best play of the decade’, with brilliant performances by this 

celebrated theatre duo. Set in the UK in the ‘80s, it brings to light 

political, societal and philosophic values we are still grappling with today. 

A Tory politician returns home to the idyllic Cotswold house he shares 

with his left-leaning wife of 30 years. But all is not as blissful as it seems. 

Written by Simon Woods, directed by Robert Whitehead and produced 

by Daphne Kuhn.

Comprising gentle and joyful Baroque, juicy and 

virtuosic Romanticism, passionate Spanish flamenco 

song, and the atmospheric lyricism of nostalgic 

memories, three phenomenal women will play music 

by five phenomenal women from around the globe 

and from different eras, to delight and enchant. 

Maya Angelou’s Phenomenal Woman provides 

the thread from which a multi-coloured and 

multi-textured fabric of moods and sounds is woven. 

The multi award-winning trio of pianist and songwriter 

Christof and sopranos Hlengiwe and Zine will entertain 

festival-goers with a unique performance in a colourful 

kaleidoscope of languages true to their rainbow nation 

home. 

Bringing new life to the treasure chest of traditional 

South African songs and spilling some African magic into 

some of the world’s greatest hits, Shades of Africa will be 

the perfect accompaniment to a heart-warming and 

sociable Supper Club evening. 

Enjoy a three-course supper and wine, once again 

catered by Blueberry Monday under the watchful eye 

of Elzette Cyster-Human.

Following the enormous success of the inaugural 

event at last year’s festival, seven of the primary schools 

in Greater Hermanus – Curro, Generation, Hawston, 

Lukhanyo, Waldorf, Mounnt Pleasant and Zwelihle 

Primary Schools – will be back to celebrate the joy 

of singing together. 

Although not a competition, each school will receive 

feedback from adjudicators. 

The programme will open with a teacher’s choir 

this year, and the final item will again be a choir 

comprising a few learners from each school choir. 

Choirs will change throughout the morning. Audience 

members are therefore welcome to arrive or leave 

between items. 

The Charl du Plessis Trio is one of the most recognisable 

instrumental groups in South Africa and will be back in 

Hermanus by popular request for a performance titled 

Fifty Ways to Leave your Lover. The Trio has released nine 

albums, won four SAMA awards and regularly perform 

in Europe and Eastern Asia. Their style combines classical 

music with influences of jazz, pop and world music and 

is aimed at the curious listener. In their latest programme 

they perform music of Bach, Grieg’s Peer Gynt Suite and 

new arrangements of ABBA and Paul Simon. 

Charl will travel to Hermanus with his own 

Steinway grand piano for this performance.

Percy Grainger and Morton Gould in this high-energy 

performance. 

Charl is the first pianist to travel with his personal 

Steinway piano for concerts across South Africa in 2023. 

For these special concerts he will not only transport 

the piano, but also prepare and tune the instrument 

for each concert.

The Enlighten Strings came into being 

in 2015 after a generous donation 

from the late Mrs. Elvia Bury. 

This string ensemble is unique in that 

it has managed to become a platform 

for learners to make world-class music 

while bridging cultural differences. This concert will 

include movements from piano concertos, accompanied 

by the ensemble, recorders as well as other string soloist.

UCT Symphonic Wind Ensemble

The UCT Symphonic Wind Ensemble, comprising about 

forty-five under- and post-graduate students will bring 

FynArts 2023 to a close. Conductor Brandon Phillips, who 

was appointed at the beginning of this year as winds and 

ensembles lecturer at UCT, was principal bassoon of 

the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, and Artistic 

Director and Conductor of the Cape Town Philharmonic 

Youth Orchestra. 

In 2012, he received the Western Cape Government’s 

award for Outstanding Achievements by the Youth.

Opening Speaker 

Dr Imtiaz Sooliman 

Gift of the Givers 

Dr Imtiaz Sooliman, founder of the Gift of the 

Givers Foundation, the largest disaster response 

non-governmental organisation on the African 

continent, will open this year’s Strauss & Co series 

of talks and presentations. 

Dr Sooliman qualified as a medical doctor at the 

then University of Natal Medical School in 1984. 

He soon gave up his career as a medical doctor 

to pursue the field of humanitarian aid, which for 

him transcends the boundaries of race, religion, 

culture, class and geography. In 1992 he founded 

Gift of the Givers as an impartial and apolitical 

foundation dedicated to servicing humanity with compassion, kindness and mercy. 

Driven by the ethos of brotherhood between all nations, and an unflinching and 

selfless commitment to easing pain and suffering, Dr Sooliman and his medical 

team have provided humanitarian relief on an unprecedented scale to global war 

zones, refugee camps, famine and drought-stricken areas, and regions affected 

by natural disasters such as earthquakes and floods. 

For this monumental contribution, Sooliman has been awarded, amongst others, 

Honorary Doctorates by the Universities of Stellenbosch and Rhodes, the President’s 

Order of the Star of South Africa, the SA Medical Association Excellence in Health 

Care Award, the FW de Klerk Foundation Goodwill Award, The Herald Nelson 

Mandela University Citizen of the Year Award, and a Global Citizen Award, amongst 

many others. In January 2023 he was selected as Vrye Weekblad’s Person of 

the Year.

The now well-established Sculpture on the Cliffs project 

of Hermanus FynArts has not only brought something 

culturally-different to the town over more than ten years, 

but has generated many conversations – and debates! 

Some of the artists who have contributed to this year’s 

exhibition will join Melvyn to talk about the theme and 

their interpretation, as well as how they see the role of 

their public sculpture in social well-being. 

Melvyn Minnaar will be in conversation with Wilma, 

Jacques, Conrad, Jaco and Sophia. 

Bina Genovese will open Sculpture on the Cliffs 2023 

directly after this discussion at Gearing’s Point.

I’ve Seen That Face Before 

Kathryn Smith 

From early sketches made to apprehend suspects in 

criminal cases or identify the unknown deceased, art has 

had a significant, but frequently misunderstood, role 

to play in forensic identification, and technology has 

expanded the definition of the lab or studio in which 

such work is done. 

In this illustrated talk, artist, 

curator and forensic facial 

imaging expert Dr Kathryn 

Smith introduces the 

history of Forensic Art, and 

demonstrates the impact 

that facial reconstructions 

can have on forensic 

identification and archaeological research, from 

contributing to the investigative process, to restoring 

a sense of personhood to the unknown or unidentified.

Pieter-Dirk Uys, aka PDU, has been nominated by the Advisory Board as the 2023 

recipient of the FynArts Legacy Award In honour of his longstanding and 

distinctive contribution to the arts in South Africa and beyond. 

PDU, whose multi-faceted world includes performing, writing, directing, political 

commentary and social activism, has entertained audiences for more than half a 

century with his unique sense of humour and razor-sharp commentary on 

the South African zeitgeist. 

During the ‘70s several of his early plays premiered at the Space Theatre in 

Cape Town and at the height of the Apartheid era he started performing one-man 

revues. With the creation of his burlesque alter-ego, Evita Bezuidenhout (named 

after Eva Perón), PDU used satire and comedy to expose the absurdity of the 

South African government’s racial policies. 

Following South Africa’s first democratic elections, he starred in a TV series, 

Funigalore, in which, as ‘Tannie Evita’, he interviewed Nelson Mandela and other 

prominent politicians of the day. Uys/Evita are also known for their tireless work 

in the frontline of HIV/AIDS activism and education. 

In 1996 PDU settled in Darling where he converted the disused railway station into a cabaret venue called Evita se 

Perron (‘station platform’). The venue acquired new owners in 2020 but the legacy of PDU is being preserved and 

he regularly stages productions and performs himself. 

PDU has written several books and films, including a collection of three memoirs. Among the many national and 

international honours bestowed on him are Honorary Doctorates, the Living Legacy Award (San Diego, 2000), 

the Reconciliation Award (2001), TMSA Naledi Lifetime Achiever Award (2011), and the Hertzog Prize for drama (2018). 


Christopher Hope, Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, will present the Legacy Award to PDU and talk to him about 

his life.

100 years ago on 25 February 1923, Jan 

Smuts stood on Table Mountain and 

delivered one of his most famous orations. 

Today the ‘Religion of the Mountain’ speech

African statesman. Smuts has been dubbed 

everything from ‘irreligious’ to ‘devout 

believer’. He was not a church-goer in the 

conventional sense. Table Mountain fulfilled 

that need – it was his cathedral, his ‘Holy 

of Holies’. 

This FynArts talk seeks to uncover the ‘inner’ 

Smuts. What lay behind – or within – 

the legendary Boer General, the maligned 

Prime Minister, the holistic thinker, 

the loving father who endured enormous 

personal sadness, not to speak of the

at Cape Town’s A4 Arts Foundation 

in 2022, art writer Sean will discuss 

Ernest Cole’s much-admired 

photobook, House of Bondage. 

Published in exile in 1967 and 

banned from distribution in South 

Africa the following year, Cole’s book 

of 183 photos was a talismanic 

document for artists and activists. 

Newly reissued in 2022, it is hailed as 

‘one of the most significant 

landmarks in South African 

photography’. This talk will look at 

the cultural context of apartheid 

censorship when House of Bondage 

first appeared, as well as its recovery 

and current acclaim.

Sidney will talk about his involvement 

in the Anti-Apartheid struggle and

of a non-racial, non-sexist, democratic 

South Africa and its key activities, 

including the important role of the 

media (especially photography) and 

symbolism, with two focal points: 

the person of Nelson Mandela 

and the Freedom Charter.

be compared with contemporary 

Climate Change campaigns – both 

their strengths and weaknesses.

Sidney is an academic, activist and former director in provincial government,

a six-month sea voyage despite 

warnings from a gypsy fortune 

teller of a waiting peril. 

On the long six-month journey 

her mother kept a diary and 

logbooks as well as many letters. 

What happened on that 

voyage is told in The Skipper’s 

Daughter. 

Set in Hermanus, Socrates and the 

Lighthouse on the Square is a book 

of wisdom and hope that highlights 

the resilience of the human spirit. 

The fable, whimsically illustrated, is an 

anthropomorphic reflection of human 

emotions and characteristics onto a cast 

of animals, with the protagonist being 

a handsome seagull, Socrates. 

The book appeals to all ages and 

can be enjoyed as a work of fiction, 

philosophy, or one of inspiration. 

The Southern Writers group started in 

2000 and has produced four books so 

far, the latest being From the South 

(2022) from which members will read. 

In addition a couple of comic stories 

written recently will be added.

rubbish. 

Stay visually current, combining 

storytelling, science and uninhibited

Create a unique design with funky 

fabrics and colours, using patterns 

which will be provided by Dal, an 

accredited quilt teacher and regional 

quilt judge with the South African 

Quilters’ Guild. Add texture and

with fabrics and stitches. The project 

can be done using a sewing machine

‘Fire and Feast’ is C’est Ca Cooking’s 

first-ever men’s only, hands-on 

cooking class. Whether novice 

or expert, you will create a variety 

of impressive and innovative dishes 

using the Weber braai and then feast 

on your culinary creations for lunch. 

And after this relaxed culinary 

session in Chef Lindi’s custom-built 

studio kitchen, you’ll take home a 

wide variety of skills, useful hints and 

plenty of tips to make cooking not 

only easy, enjoyable and fun, but to 

also impress your family and friends. 

All recipes can also be cooked in 

the oven. 

Join Ella and learn how to create four 

to six different types of ceramic birds 

during this workshop. These birds can 

either perch on a base – which you 

will also create – or be mounted on 

a wall or hang in free flight. 

Ella’s conceptual aptitude and 

consistent interest in myths, fables 

and legends provide her with 

a diversity of subversive, multicultural 

narratives to rethink, recontextualise

Youth Development Platform 

The sole beneficiary of the FynArts Festival (930070839 PBO) is the Development Fund (178 125 NPO). The purpose 

of the Fund, amongst others, is to initiate or support projects that promote the arts and the business of the arts in 

underserved communities in Greater Hermanus throughout the year. Activities include skills development and support, 

as well as networking and other related educational marketing opportunities 

Venue: New Harbour Multi-Purpose Centre 

The New Harbour Multi-Purpose Centre is housed in the newly renovated Lusitania building. The Centre is a space 

where educational and skills development projects and activities are offered. The department of Local Economic 

Development has given us permission to utilise this space to offer a limited number of workshops, as well as to present 

a small arts and crafts exhibition of work by local creatives. 

Projects such as making carrier bags out of dogfood bags will start in advance of the festival and a two-day workshop 

on collage art will take place during FynArts. Quality assurance and pricing training will be included in all workshops. 

During FynArts we will also offer one drumming workshop at the facility (p31) 

Visitors are encouraged to pop into the Centre on weekday afternoons to take a look at the exhibition as well as view 

the type of activities offered, such as chess for children.

our Constitution and core disciplines. Among the objectives of these projects is to promote forms of self-expression 

and to support the development of skills that will lead to employment in some form – whether self-employed or 

through a third party. 

We are delighted to have entered into an informal collaboration with Warwick’s Chef School and Core Catering 

Supplies for the launch of this exciting initiative by the Chef School. Grade 12 learners at all schools in the Overberg 

will be invited to take part in this competition. 

‘The Warwick’s Chef School Aspiring Chef of the Year Competition, is a chance for high school learners in 

the Overberg to showcase their ‘Art on a Plate’. It is important to inspire our young local individuals to get excited 

about Hermanus as a Culinary Hub, and put their attention on the hospitality industry opportunities in our area. 

The main sponsor is Core Catering Supplies, and the winner of this competition will be cooking in the FynArts 

demonstration kitchen – where passion for cooking is shared with others.’ 

The winner of this first competition will showcase their skills in the Pop-up Kitchen at the United Church, 

appropriately on Youth Day, 16 June.

celebrated human pursuit that goes back thousands of years but is still alive with expression

Walking back to happiness

The theme was prompted by a 1960s hit by the songwriters John Schroeder and Mike Hawker and made famous 

by Helen Shapiro. The elegant title suggests a return to a state of betterness. 

Invited artists were asked to engage with the concept of cheer – something we seem to have sacrificed in the 

tribulations of recent years. Art can lift the spirit, inspire. 

Not as escapism, but in three-dimensional works that signal something about living meaningfully – art that inspires 

hope and goodness in the environment of this beautiful coastal setting. 

Like the song, the sculptures take on nostalgia, optimism and a physical dynamic for engagement in a special 

environment. 

Let’s say this is art as a playground for adults. Current worldwide turmoil needs an antidote. Let’s hum along. Take a walk.

Artist’s Statement 

Shaking the Dust 

Paula Louw 

Inviting the viewer to pause and focus on small details, I unravel 

and unpack old, obsolete machines, including outdated cameras 

and typewriters. This contrasts with how we look at things today as 

we race through life and our communications at full speed. 

In days gone by there was reverence and respect in our manner 

of letter writing. Time was invested in communicating, and 

the letter posted using stamp and envelope, unlike today where 

misspellings and misunderstandings often result from hastily 

written and ill-considered WhatsApp messages and emails. 

FynArts – Festival Artist 

I choose to hark back to a time when life was quieter, simpler 

and less complex. The use of monochrome in my work therefore 

attempts to slow down the instant gratification received from 

cellphone cameras and the real-life images they take, their instant 

messaging and video calls. 

A more recent gift of a box of glass negatives dating back to 1929 

offered new possibilities, as their age conferred on them a sense 

of time and history. I experimented with a technique of negative 

photographic referencing, which led me into a new creative 

direction of drawing into and over negative photographic images. 

My work encompasses this technique, as well as paint and pastel, 

collage, charcoal and found objects. 

For this exhibition I have focussed on both the minutiae of tiny, 

fascinating details as well as the grand sweep of a mountain 

or shoreline.

Close to fifty artists have taken part in the Sculpture on the Cliffs exhibition. Each year between ten and twelve artists 

have exhibited a sculpture on the cliffs, on loan for a full year. 

The support, commitment, talent and generosity of these highly-respected artists has resulted in an exhibtion that has 

become the flagship of FynArts. 

Sculpture on the Cliffs has given rise to Art in the Auditorium to give visitors the opportunity to see more of the artists’ 

work. 

Each year all artists who have exhibited on the cliffs in any of the previous years, or will take part in the current year’s 

exhibtion, are invited to take part in this show of smaller works.

Exhibitions – Fibre Art 

Fibre Art Exhibition 2023 

This exhibition, curated for the past ten years by Dal Botha, has become one of the major group exhibitions of 

the festival. However, over the years the exhibition has been installed in a number of venues, starting out in 

the Old Synagogue (now the Overstrand Learning Hub) then moving to the Fernkloof Hall, the Municipal Auditorium 

and then last year, to The Marine Hotel. 

None of these venues has done justice to the artists nor their artworks. What is needed for artworks of this size and 

intricacy is a gallery space in which to install a ‘proper’ exhibition. After much consideration, and with some regret, 

it has been decided that the only solution is for the FynArts fibre art exhibition to become an annual, stand-alone event 

presented in the FynArts Gallery. 

During the exhibition period a number of related talks, walk-throughs, demonstrations and workshops will take place.
