THE PARAGON HUB

finding

your focus

In order to set the tone for this year, the Paragon hub team has decided to use the

concept of "focus" as the central theme for our sixth issue. Many individuals and

businesses in Zimbabwe have served as motivation for us to do what we do.

Finding your focus entails determining the most important thing to consider. It all

comes down to strategy. It's all about knowing your options and making the best

choice. It's about finding meaning and being aware of your purpose, your strengths

and weaknesses, your likes and dislikes, and what's important to you and what's not.

In this issue, we've zeroed down on what matters most to us as a team, so you'll see

ads and articles on successful Zimbabwean entrepreneurs, unsung heroes, and

inspiring community projects. We wish you the inspiration and drive you need to zero

in on what matters most in 2023.

RAINBOW CHILDREN’S VILLAGE

CHILDREN’S VILLAGE

A vision

into

Focus

A vision of hope, more than a dash of

determination, and a massive scoop of

generosity mixed together to create a

beautiful home from home, for children with

cancer.

Opened in December 2022 after a year of

construction and more than 7 years of

planning, all those who worked tirelessly and

contributed generously with time and money

could take a moment to enjoy phase 1

(dining area, kitchen, laundry, 5 bedrooms

ablutions and an office block for Kidzcan) of

the special village which will bring hope to

many children and their families in the years

to come.

Finally this incredible project has started doing

what it set out to do: changing the lives of

these little kids inextricably for the better by

providing them with a safe, secure place to

recover. Well done to all involved especially

John, Christo, Grant, Ross and all the others

who made this dream a reality. It was very

humbling being there to see these kids (one

was a tiny baby) and their parents move into

the rooms.

It is simply life-changing and all us Tablers

should be immensely proud of being part of

this far-reaching legacy project.

How can you help?

RAINBOW CHILDREN’S VILLAGE

2023 is a year to focus on finishing this amazing project. The RCV board and

fundraising team are fully committed and focused on raising the balance of the

funds to complete the building of 22 rooms. Phase 2 & 3 will comprise of 11 rooms

and an ablution block each, enabling the home to welcome 27 children and their

caregivers at any one time. 60% has been raised to date….. only 40% to go! The

MUMMA ZIM

CAT RESCUE ZIM

Our Mission

We want to give cats the best possible

life by reducing populations, eliminating

reproduction stress and supporting the

health of sterilized colonies through

feeding programs. Where appropriate,

we uplift weaned kittens and home

them with responsible owners. We avoid

putting healthy cats to sleep, instead,

we home unwanted feral cats on farms

as working cats.

About Us

CRZ is a 100% voluntary organisation made

up of a small group of cat lovers dedicated

to improving the welfare of cats in

Zimbabwe. This is achieved through the TNR

Program (trap, neuter, return), Foster Kitten

program and the Ferals for Farmers

program.

Our Vision

1. To have fewer cats and kittens on the

streets

2. To educate communities about the

benefits of having cats and their place

in the ecosystem, along with basic cat

care

3. To inform businesses about basic care

for feral cats on their premises

4. To run sterilization programs in impoverished

communities to improve the

health and wellbeing of cats

ADOPT DONATE VOLUNTEER

Provide a loving forever home

for a rescued kitten. Two is

better than one - a pair of

kittens will amuse each other

and ensure better socialisation

than a singleton. Also consider

providing a home for an older

kitten - a teenager can just be

as loving as a kitten!

You can help by donating

money to help recover our vet

bills, cat food, fuel coupons,

blankets, newspapers, professional

skills (marketing, fund

raising, printing etc). This is all

because all of us here at CRZ

are 100% unpaid volunteers. We

rely completely on donations. If

we do not have funding, CRZ

will cease to operate.

We always need more foster

parents so we can continue to

rescue kittens. We also need

people to help trap cats and to

do the groundwork necessary

to run our organisation.

CAT RESCUE ZIM

CRICKET

BEAR

What we do.

TRAP | NEUTER | RETURN

Management of the cat overpopulation crisis in

Zimbabwe through an effective and humane TNR

program. This is achieved by sterilising vaccinating

and ear tipping (for identification purposes) feral

cats.

TNR benefits everyone because it:

• humanely reduces the feral cat population on the

streets

• drastically improves cats’ quality of life as it

eliminates reproductive stress

• reduces territorial stress and improves the cats’

health through vaccination

• reduces noise from fighting and mating activities

• reduces smells from the territorial spraying of urine

• prevents the spread of rabies

FOSTER PROGRAM

Cats can get pregnant at only 4 months old, can

have up to 4 litters a year with up to 6 kittens per

litter. During TNR jobs, we almost always encounter

heavily pregnant females and kittens. Cats are

seasonal breeders, leading to a jump in feral kitten

numbers from October to April (there are always

exceptions - we have seen kittens born in winter

too).

During this time, we are swamped with calls to

rescue vulnerable kittens and to uplift unwanted

mothers and litters.

Where appropriate, we remove young kittens from

feral colonies and give them a better life by

rearing, rehabilitating, taming and homing them

with responsible owners. We uplift kittens from

roads, ceilings, gutters, drains, cars, trucks,

warehouse, storerooms and any other place they

turn up.

“Time spent with cats

is never wasted.”

FERALS FOR FARMERS PROGRAM

When trapping colonies of cats in areas unsuitable or where the cats are not wanted

back, we sterilize these cats and rehome them on farms with rat population problems.

There is an application process for these homes, as well as a contract to ensure the

cats’ well-being. We have received excellent feedback from these farmers regarding

the effectiveness of using feral cats to alleviate rat infestations, thereby avoiding the

use of dangerous rat poisons that are harmful to the environment and wildlife. The cats

go on to live a peaceful life in a safe environment while also helping the farmers.

DRIVE ZIM

The busiest Easter

holiday predicted.

Good Friday – the first long holiday since the start of the

year – looks set to be the single busiest day of the long

weekend with drivers. Drive Zim is reminding drivers of

the importance of pre-drive checks to avoid a

breakdown. In addition to the expected traffic jams,

drivers also face the costliest Easter on record when it

comes to petrol and diesel prices with 6% of drivers

saying they’re not planning a car trip at all over the

weekend for this very reason.

22

MAR - MAY 2023 | ISSUE 6

Separate research by Drive Zim also suggests that the

high pump prices might affect people’s trips in other

ways – one-in-five drivers (20%) said they plan on

driving a shorter distance this Easter than in previous

years, with the same proportion saying they’ll be

cutting back on other Easter expenditure because of

high petrol and diesel prices. More than a quarter

(28%) said they’re planning on using their cars less,

while a third (33%) will be deliberately driving more

economically to try to keep their Easter fuel spending

down.

The research also found that only a fifth of drivers

(19%) say they always check their cars are

‘road-ready’ before making an Easter trip, increasing

the potential for breakdowns to ruin the start of many

people’s breaks. Half of the drivers (51%) said they

sometimes checked their cars over before setting out

but an alarming 30% said they never do.

Drive Zim is therefore

reminding people that

spending just a little time

checking their vehicles’

oil, coolant and tyres

can prevent a very

inconvenient breakdown.

After two years of relatively quiet Easter holidays on

the roads, our research suggests a return to traffic

levels that are much more typical of this time of year,

and it’s very possible the weekend could turn out to

be one of the busiest for leisure journeys for many

years. Add in the impact taking place at the

weekend and you have all the ingredients needed

for problems on the roads. Traffic volumes will likely be

even higher if some warm spring sunshine makes an

appearance.

The key to avoiding the worst of any jams is planning.

Put simply, the earlier you leave in the morning the

more likely you are to miss the worst of the queues,

especially if you are travelling a longer distance –

although a fifth of drivers we polled said they were

planning on driving shorter distances this Easter,

specifically because of the extremely high cost of

petrol and diesel at the moment.

As well as leading to queues of traffic, vehicle

breakdowns also have the potential to ruin the long

weekend for drivers and anyone they’re travelling

with, so we’re urging people to make sure their

vehicles are ‘road-ready’ before setting out. This is

even more important for anyone travelling longer

distances than they have for several months. A

breakdown is much less likely if a car’s oil and coolant

levels, as well as tyre pressure and tread depth, have

all been checked before setting out.

Even with a significant increase in petrol prices,

we expect a large jump in holiday driving compared

to the last few years. Drivers should expect

congestion on major Highways around urban areas

and popular destinations. Knowing when and where

congestion will build can help drivers avoid the stress

of sitting in traffic.

DRIVE ZIM

Guide to travelling by car this Easter

How can I prepare my car for travel?

If you’re part of the 81% of drivers that rarely or never

check your car before a long trip, it is even more

important for you to do your necessary car checks

now. They can reduce the likelihood of a breakdown

over the Easter period. Drive Zim recommends you

follow our FORCES guidance:

F is for FUEL - Ensure you have enough fuel for your

journey. Cars use more fuel in heavy traffic and

start/stop conditions which can be regular

occurrences.

O is for OIL - To avoid engine damage and a

potential breakdown, remember to check your oil

level and top up when necessary

R is for RUBBER - Your tyres can tell you a lot about

how your car is performing. If they aren’t wearing

evenly, then tyre pressures may be mismatched or

there could be a fault with the steering.

Check that all four tyres have at least 3mm of tread

and are inflated to the correct pressure - this is vital to

maintaining good grip in wet conditions.

C is for COOLANT - Make sure it's topped up to your

vehicle manufacturer's recommended levels and

contains the right amount of anti-freeze.

E is for ELECTRICS - Check all of your lights are working

correctly including your indicators, brake lights and

fog lights - and replace any faulty bulbs or blown

fuses.

S is for SCREENWASH – Top up your windscreen

washer fluid by using a good quality screen wash that

is effective at all temperatures.

Easter weekend weather

It’s a bit of a mixed picture as far as weather is

concerned over the long Easter weekend although

feeling warm in places, at least early in the weekend.

What should I take in my vehicle if I am going on a

long journey?

The most important thing is to be prepared for

anything, including a breakdown so you should

ensure you have:

• A fully charged mobile phone – charge your phone

up while you drive if you can, or consider taking a

portable ‘power bank’ charger in case your battery

runs low

• Water or other hydrating drinks

• A blanket or a coat that keeps you warm

• Some food or snacks

• A face covering for when you might need to stop

and go into an indoor public space, or in case you

break down

• It’s worth taking items with you that will keep young

passengers in the back seat entertained

DRIVE ZIM

Top tips from Drive Zim Rescuers on avoiding a

breakdown

24

MAR - MAY 2023 | ISSUE 6

“Put simply, a well-maintained car is much less likely

to break down than one that hasn’t been looked

after. So, if you have a big drive coming up and

suspect something on your car’s not quite right then

get it into a good garage as soon as you can this

week.”

“Keep your locking wheel nut somewhere you can

easily find it as this makes it quicker for us to do a tyre

change if needed. Make sure that everything fixed to

the outside of your car – bikes, roof boxes – are

properly secured. If you’re travelling with a dog,

again ensure it’s secure inside and has some food

and water.

“Check your tyres every time, especially the inside

front edges. You can fully lock the steering one way

or the other so you can see the condition of your front

tyres easily. And whatever you do, don’t start a

journey with a known problem!”

What key things should I do before I travel?

Planning your trip is just as important as the trip itself.

We recommend the following:

Plan your journey with a map, a sat-nav or a route

planner to ensure you do not have any navigation

problems on your journey. If possible, plan your

journey for when roads are likely to be quieter and

remember that it’s important for your safety to take

breaks on longer journeys.

Let your hosts know when you’re setting out. It’s

always worth letting those you’re visiting know when

you’re leaving, and when you expect to arrive.

SECURITY

FACE-THEM

S E C U R I T Y

26

MAR - MAY 2023 | ISSUE 6

The high unemployment rate has resulted in the

escalation of crime in Zimbabwe. Home invasions

and burglaries are now very common regardless of

location of one’s residence. These break-ins are

usually violent with the perpetrators becoming more

and more daring. It has been noted that the

invasions, robberies and break-ins are usually

targeted at people who usually possess a lot of

money or valuable disposables.

It is therefore important for the Zimbabwean

community to be conscious of what makes “you” a

target. The new crop of robbers and home invaders

are not afraid to use maximum force and violence

against their victims. They are fast moving from using

clubs and knives to guns and ammunition. This has

resulted in the loss of lives and valuables. In this article

we are going to share tips on how we can best

secure your premise against robbers and invaders.

1. LIVE A LOW- KEY LIFE

Many people live flashy lives and show off expensive

acquisitions. Some do this openly to the public while

others do it within their social circles. A good example

is when people tend to make it apparent that they

have money on them or have acquired something of

value. This makes it easy for robbers and invaders to

target them.

So living a low-key life is all about being

unpredictable, being mysterious makes it difficult for

culprits to map out and direct your daily itinerary. A

low-key life makes it hard for would be perpetrators to

plan and successfully catch you off guard. Living

below the radar means that even the social circles

you share only what’s necessary and do not divulge

valuable information that might put you at risk. This

includes self-censure on social media. It also involves

not trusting anyone with information on money and

valuables.

2. SECURITY ASSESSMENT ON PREMISES

Make sure you carry out vulnerability assessment of

your premises on a regular basis. Be on the lookout for

loopholes, weak points and security failure. Security

companies and security consultants may be of help.

In this regard make sure that there are no hidden keys

under the mat, in/under the flower pot, in the

mailbox, in the bush.

SECURITY

FACE-THEM

S E C U R I T Y

Thieves and robbers are now aware of these tricks

and usually search for such whenever they visit. It is

best to have a locksmith duplicate keys whenever

and wherever necessary. Keys must be secured in

smart spots at all times

and key chains must be a

common feature so as to

deter pickpockets. Also

make sure you eliminate

weak locks that are easy

to smash, pick or cut. It is

best to go for costly but

secure locks than to invest

in cheap ones that are

easy to bypass.

Make sure that all

windows are secured with

screens so as to deter

intrusion. Doors must not

be hinged from outside as

this makes it easy for burglars TO gain access to your

premises. Kitchen doors are usually the least secure,

especially the Dutch doors, also called doubles hung

doors or half doors or stable door. These are easy to

pry open using crowbars. Screens and locks must be

on the inside so as to deter invaders.

3. INVEST IN TECHNOLOGY AND PROFESSIONAL

SECURITY COMPANIES

• Invest in panic buttons and rapid response security

• Invest in security alarms and biometric security

• Invest in CCTV and make sure that some of the

cameras are concealed in strategic places

4. OTHER SECURITY MEASURES

Make sure you don’t keep tools in unsecure places.

They can be used as weapons or to gain access into

premises. Always keep your tools locked up. Thieves

and invaders usually look

for tools like ladders and

empty drums / barrels to

gain access to rooftops,

fireplaces and high

windows.

Your outdoors must be

well lit at night and the

surroundings must not

offer hiding places for

invaders. In addition to

this, you may need to put

up security warning signs

so as to scare off would

be invaders.

Hire professional security companies and if you have

a firearm, make sure it is located in a concealed gun

cabinet. In the case of firearms make sure that it is

licensed and you know how to use it professionally

and legally.

Safes are no longer that secure. Thieves are now

using explosives to break them open. Make sure you

invest in a strong safe or get a bank safety box from

financial institutions.

MTB Challenge

MAY 2023

28

MAR - MAY 2023 | ISSUE 6

The Savé Valley Conservancy (SVC) is thrilled and

proud to host Zimbabwe's first "Wild" mountain biking

event in one of Africa's largest private game

reserves, with 750,000 acres of diverse animal

lowveld, bordering the Save River on its eastern side,

visitors will see nearly all of Southern Africa's game

species which include the Big Five- elephant, lion,

leopard, buffalo, and rhino. The SVC is home to one

of Africa's largest black and white rhino populations,

as well as a strong population of rare African

Painted Dogs. Both of these extremely endangered

species are closely monitored and protected within

the conservancy. Throughout the year, the

Conservancy is home to over 300 bird species,

including several raptors.

This premier four-day mountain biking event will take

place from May 11-14, 2023. This will provide for

transit time into and out of Zimbabwe, as well as the

Savé Valley Conservancy. Each day, the cyclists will

depart from a central upmarket base camp where

they will be lodged, here they will also receive hot

meals, cold beverages, and hot showers.

Bring your family along to see some of the key

wildlife activities that take place within the

managed by expert bike guides, with enough

ground protection supplied by experienced game

scouts and rangers.

2023 Calendar Launch hosted

by

Trail Blazers began with a team of 5 fitness enthusiasts

who frantically needed to get prepared for the end

of year Sky Run. With their Sky Shorts, Trail Sunglasses

and DNA Running Shoes, they all trekked out of town,

to find a trail and practise their run. Trail running is a

popular activity across the globe. Contrary to

popular belief, you don’t have to have mountains for

trail running.

Trail running can in fact be done everywhere. It is

considered a “trail run” when you are not on

surfaced, paved, sealed or asphalt roads. For trail

running, it’s all about the movement outdoors in

The experience itself takes centre stage, with

obstacles and terrain constantly changing – first

you’re on rocks, then on grass, occasionally over

roots, and in between it may go up and then go

down, both your body and soul are alert and

challenged.

In athletic trail running, you can switch between

running and walking on big climbs. Longer

adventures are possible, and with the correct

equipment such as trail running shoes, performance

apparel, and a pack, you can easily spend the entire

day out trail running. Of course, with provisions and a

rain jacket packed along just in case – it can let loose

at any time.

Trail Blazers has become a blazing phenomenon

across Zimbabwe, with over 300 regular racers and

multiple sponsors, the team has set up a Trail Race

Calendar to keep the momentum going. With

journeys mapped out to take place in the most

spectacular locations, Hippo Pools, Matopos, Kariba

and so many more, we are encouraging anyone and

everyone to get fit and get involved. The journey is

our goal.

SPORT

Article written by GRANT MITCHELL

Grant is a Strength and Conditioning Coach who has worked extensively in contact

and collision based sports such as rugby, boxing, karate and motorcross.

39

MAR - MAY 2023 | ISSUE 6

As far back as 500BC there is evidence within ancient

Greek medical texts that first identify and describe

symptoms of concussion. Unfortunately, it has taken a

long time for global sporting bodies, governing sports

associations and on field coaching programs to fully

accept that concussion is a legitimate threat to an

athlete’s cognitive health, both short term and long

term.

It is important to note that concussion is not limited to

contact and collision based sports and sports alone.

Concussion can occur in many non-contact sports

and most certainly in life on a daily basis. Be aware

and educated to recognise and assist.

What Is Concussion?

A concussion is a traumatic brain injury and should at

every stage be considered as serious until further

investigation displays otherwise. Concussion is caused

by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or to the body

that causes the head and brain to move quickly back

and forth (whiplash). This fast movement can cause

the brain to bounce around or twist in the skull,

creating chemical changes in the brain and

sometimes stretching and damaging the brain cells.

We are all susceptible to concussion, however,

children and adolescent athletes are most

susceptible. Educate and protect from a young age.

Signs and Symptoms of Concussion

These are signs and symptoms identified by

Coaches, Medical Staff and Teammates:

• Appears dazed or stunned.

• Forgets an instruction, is confused about an

assignment or position, or is unsure of the

bout, round, or opponent

• Moves clumsily.

• Answers questions slowly.

• Loses consciousness (even briefly).

• Shows mood, behavior, emotional or

personality changes.

• Cannot recall events prior to or after a collision.

These are signs and symptoms displayed by or

reported by the athlete:

• Speaks of headaches and/or dizziness.

• “Pressure” in head.

• Nausea or vomiting.

• Balance problems or dizziness, double or blurry

vision.

• Bothered by light or noise.

• Feeling sluggish, hazy, foggy, or groggy.

• Confusion, or concentration or memory

problems.

• Just not “feeling right”, or “feeling down”.

SPORT

CONCUSSION

IN SPORT

How can a Coaching Program keep contact athletes

safe?

Well structured coaching programs – enforce the

rules of the sport for fair play, safety, and

sportsmanship. Coach and teach correct technique

in contact both when receiving and applying.

Maintain a no-nonsense policy when dealing with

concussion and suspected concussion.

Education programs – educate all involved in the

program from coaches to parents to medical staff to

the athletes themselves. Make everyone aware of

and accountable to the non-negotiables.

Strength and conditioning – Create programs that

minimise the risk of concussion by developing robust

athletes. Research has shown that simple neck

strengthening exercises that follow the isometric

tension method for up to 10 seconds 3 times per

position 3 times weekly can reduce the onset of

concussion by up to 13%.

Baseline Tests – work with medical experts to run

baseline tests that become reference points when an

athlete displays symptoms. Gathering data and

history of athletes is important for the playing journey.

What steps can we take to help an athlete return to

training and competition?

A wonderful way to remember a process and

implement the detail within is

RECOGNISE – REMOVE – REPORT – RETURN

Recognise – through education and awareness all

involved are empowered to know when someone is

displaying symptoms or quite obviously concussed.

Remove – immediately remove the athlete from the

environment, this must be done under the safest of

conditions and with appropriate

equipment/techniques so as to not exacerbate the

situation.

Report – get the athlete to the medical team on site

or medical professional off site for immediate

assessments and monitoring.

Return – implement sport specific and athlete

appropriate Graduated Return to Play protocols. This

allows a stage by stage application of load and

intensity into the athlete all whilst monitoring their

symptoms at all times.

If you are looking to further your

knowledge so as to improve your

Coaching space and that of the

athlete then take a look at this site.

concussion education and the

2023 SIX NATIONS

By Marc Pozzo

The quality of rugby has been high in the first two

rounds of the 2023 Six Nations, bringing out individual

brilliance from several players. Ireland and France

delivered a spectacle befitting a match between the

and, England trundled to a first win under new head

months, these players proved they can find their best

form when it matters. France scrum-half Antoine

Dupont would make this list purely for his

gravity-defying, try-saving tackle on Ireland's Mack

Hansen, but as always he did many impressive things

in that game against Ireland. It looked as if Hansen

was certain to walk in a try, but Dupont showed off his

super strength to stop the Ireland wing in his tracks as

he tried to single-handedly hold on to France's Grand

Slam dream. Sticking with the game of the weekend

and the tournament thus far , there are obviously many

Ireland players who could make this list after they

ability to involve himself in everything made it seem as

if there were two of him on the pitch.

Doris had the joint-most carries for Ireland with 18,

side's tries and made life difficult any time France tried

to attack. Ireland full-back Keenan went over for

Ireland's first try thanks to a little help from his fellow

forward Finlay Bealham. Keenan ran a perfect line to

find a gaping hole in France's defence in a perfect

example of how Ireland's attack can undo even the

best teams.

Scotland fly-half Finn Russell has been another

standout so far this season. He ran Scotland's attack

games in the Six Nations for the first time. The

Napkin Bunny

To make these adorable napkin bunnies, fold a

square dinner napkin in half diagonally into a

triangle shape (have an adult iron it flat first to

make the DIY easier). Starting at the top of the

triangle, roll the entire napkin, then place a

decorated egg right above the center of the roll.

Finally, gather the ends at the top so the napkin

wraps around the egg and tie it with ribbon to

create ears.
