CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY
AND THE JONES HIGH SCHOOL
MULTIVERSARY 2023
As a seventh grader at Jones High School in 1964, I won the Orange
County Spelling Bee for the second time. Here I am being awarded the
single trophy that was passed from black school to black school every
year, inscribed with my name twice, in 1962 and 1964. I only later
became aware that each of the white Spelling Bee winners received a new
trophy every year.
Though segregated and discriminated against, Still We Rise! I am proud
to be back in Orlando in Black History Month 2023 to celebrate the
inaugural Multiversary and the Jones High School Foundation.
