FISHY DISHES FOR GOOD FRIDAY
Do you find you’re a different
person as spring unfurls?
I certainly am - it’s like a
shed a coat (physically and
metaphorically) and have
more of a spring in my step.
Tasks feel more achievable,
new projects more exciting
and just a little stroll in the
sunshine feels like the best
kind of battery recharge -
like I’m solar powered and
I’m topping up my energy
stores! That said, I will
be dodging all the April
showers as the humidity
does nothing for my look!
WILD
AT HEART
TV star Ben Fogle is about to take a walk on the wild side with
a new UK tour. Editor Katie Thomson caught up with him to
find out more...
Your tour follows on from your wildly
successful ‘Tales from the Wilderness’
a few years ago. Are you excited to get
out in front of a live audience again?
Yeah I loved doing the last tour. It was
a great opportunity to meet people who
have championed me and watched my
shows over the years. What I wanted to
do with this one was bring something
that is maybe even more relatable for
people. My last show was all about my
experiences with expeditions and how
I’ve used them to build my confidence.
But what I wanted to do this time was
to make a show about how to find
happiness and how to live a simpler
life. Not necessarily like some of the
examples I’ll be sharing of people who
have gone to live in Siberia or outer
Mongolia, but just how to live a happier
life.
I can imagine it’s nearly impossible to
encapsulate all the experiences you’ve
had and how they’ve shaped you and
put that into an evening. Was it an
interesting process to take stock of
everything you’ve done to be able to
pull the show together?
Yeah, the last one was kind of quite
easy because there was a chronology
to it. My journey from being marooned
on an island through to rowing oceans
and ultimately climbing Mount Everest.
This one is a little bit different as this
is sort of a journey around the world
meeting different people and a behind
the scenes look at some of the places
I’ve been and the people I’ve met and
kind of what I’ve taken away from that.
So this was actually quite an interesting
way of analysing some of the experiences
that I’ve had, from walking through the
remains of Chernobyl in Ukraine through
to people who are trying to bring back the
woolly mammoth in Siberia. But at the
heart of it all is this idea that happiness is
kind of a journey, not just a destination.
So many people kind of just trudge
through life waiting for that metaphorical
summit that they will eventually reach.
What I have discovered over the years is
that there are so many people who just
enjoy the whole process and make the
most of the whole journey and that’s what
I’m trying to bring together.
I guess, in that way, you’ve never really
conformed to the nuclear life. We ask
a lot of our children these days; even
though we know as adults how broad
and diverse our interests and abilities
are, we still ask children to conform
to one form of standardised testing.
Would you say you would cover that in
the show, that there’s much more to
life than ticking boxes?
Absolutely, I think that it’s almost like
society wants to make everything
homogeneous. They want all cars to look
the same, all people to look the same,
to learn the same, to have the same
education, to live in the same sort of
house. My upbringing was always very
different to that anyway, in that I spent a
bit of my time in central London, Dorset,
a bit on a little farm in Sussex and a
bit of my time in the wilds of Canada.
It meant that I had quite an eclectic list
of experiences and I think for me, my
struggles with academics and the fact
that I wasn’t very good at sport or exams
meant that everyone looked at me like I
was a bit of a freak, and it meant that I
was forced look for alternative ways of
being me. I was able to find that freedom
in the wild. The ‘wild’ is obviously quite
an expansive word, and it’s down to your
interpretation really. But that is, as you
very astutely said, is one of my big things
in life; trying to encourage youngsters,
families, individuals, couples to do
what they want to do, not what society
expects them to do and that’s what I’m
trying to share with this show. I’ve sort
of done bits of it over the years with the
expeditions I’ve been on. A lot of people
say, “why would you go and climb Mount
Everest?” “Why would you row across
an ocean?”. And the answer is because
you should try to enjoy each day, not just
sleepwalk through it.
With your tour, would you say there is
a sense of that we have to stop looking
at the actual destination and instead
enjoy ride a little bit more?
Yes, it is about enjoying the journey itself.
So many people sleepwalk through life.
It’s almost like it’s a trial and it doesn’t
have to be that way. Now obviously
people are struggling financially and there
are all sorts of reasons why people are
experiencing mental health problems
and many other things, but what I’ve
realised over the years is that human
nature is to aspire and to want more. So,
whether you want that job promotion,
or you want the bigger house, the better
car, or the newer phone. But actually, if
you simplify everything, then suddenly
those aspirations are all relative and it
means that to actually find that nirvana
of happiness becomes much easier to
attain. Sometimes the things that give
you great happiness are much easier
to actually find and hold on to. That’s
what I’ve discovered the wilderness and
the wild has done for me. To be in the
jungle in the trees, on a river, on the sea,
in the dessert. Away from the pressures
of social media and the excesses of the
internet, all those things. I find myself so
much more content and happy. I just had
a whole month in Antarctica for a new
show and it was revolutionary in terms
of not having any internet, email, any
contact. All I had was a satellite phone
to make a few calls to my family, and it
changed my whole psychology. I found
myself less anxious, happier, I chatted
more to people around me. I lived in
the now, rather than in someone else’s
little world. I think that’s the nuts and
bolts of what this show ‘Wild’ is going
to hopefully help people attain; not by
showing how climbing a mountain can
change your life, but just how in some
ways, changing your perspective can
do that. I hope the tour can be a bit
of a medicine for modern life that will
hopefully leave people smiling and feeling
uplifted.
Mark's mantra
SIMPLE, SEASONAL AND BRITISH
Mark Hix was the food writer for The Independent on Saturday for 14 years. He now has a regular column in The
Telegraph and a weekly cookery show on Lyme Bay Radio.
Most importantly he is a well-respected chef in the industry and is frequently praised as being one of Britain’s
most eminent restaurateurs. His knowledge of ingredients is exceptional. Mark is also an award-winning author
and food writer with 12 cookbooks to his name, the latest of which, Hooked, has delightful stories of fishing from
being a boy through to the present day.
Sally Thomson managed to catch up with him during his very busy schedule to find out how he became a chef and
what is coming up next, which includes him heading up the Alresford Watercress Festival this June for first time...
PLEASE MAY I ASK WHAT GOT
YOU INTO COOKING?
Well, at school it was a choice between
metalwork or domestic science. A group
of us decided to opt for domestic science
because it would be a class full of girls.
But when we turned up on day one of
class, all the girls had decided to do
metalwork!
HOW DID YOUR COOKING
CAREER DEVELOP AFTER THAT?
I started working at a local pub to earn
a little bit of money. When you come to
the end of school, you have to make
your mind up as to what you are going to
do. My Dad’s friend suggested catering
college. This was in Weymouth. So
that’s what happened; I went to catering
college for two years, and after that I
went to London.
WHAT MADE YOU EVENTUALLY
How the boarding
sector is prioritising
mental health
Boarding house staff strive to create a secure, supportive and nurturing
environment for students, so there is no wonder boarding schools are
well placed to prioritise pupil mental health and wellbeing.
Following a turbulent period of
uncertainty in the wake of the pandemic,
mental health and wellbeing has never
been so important.
In a recent article on this topic, Andrew
Russell, Headmaster of St David’s
College in North Wales said: “When
parents are looking for the right boarding
school for their family, three of the most
important questions they usually have
are: Where will my child sleep? What
will they eat? Who will support them?
In the past, support may have been
academically focused but now more than
ever there is a need for pastoral support.”
(Source: www.ukbsa.com)
Mental health has long been at the heart
of the pastoral care package at boarding
schools. Prioritising pupil wellbeing,
offering them regular opportunities to talk
freely about how they feel, and putting
their welfare at the heart of boarding
culture allows the potential for children
truly to flourish. For example, Fettes
College in Edinburgh instils a “culture
of openness and acceptance around
mental health in the school community”
and Queen Margaret’s School for Girls in
York states that “…wellbeing is ingrained
into everything we do, from the pupils’
perspective. We have truly been able to
put our pupils’ wellbeing at the centre of
our practice.”
Boarding school is all about learning to
live with others, experiencing a shared
space, working together, having extra
time to try new things and learning to
stand on your own two feet. All of these
experiences build a sense of resilience
and independence.
Much of this independence and
confidence comes from being with other
young people – but it also the support of
highly trained, caring and professional
boarding staff who put pupil wellbeing at
the heart of the boarding experience, to
ensure that students prosper and thrive
on solid foundations.
According to Downe House School, “A
boarding environment allows a school
to support the wellbeing of a pupil in
many real and tangible ways. Sleep is
so important for all teenagers to enable
them to function effectively. Boarding
staff are utterly committed to ensure
each pupil is getting enough sleep. We
stress the importance of healthy eating
and in a boarding environment we know
whether a pupil is following our advice.
Similarly, we support an active lifestyle
but we can see if pupils are stretching
themselves too far on the sports pitch.
Lines of communication are always open
between departments. The support pupils
receive in a boarding school is not just
theoretical but practical and real. The aim
is to furnish them with a ‘toolkit’ for life,
which will allow them to face the many
challenges in the world beyond school,
to prepare them for the unknown and to
enable them to flourish.”
(Source: www.ukbsa.com)
So, if you are considering boarding
school for your child, know that in
addition to the wider internationally
regarded academic teaching and
learning, mental health and wellbeing
is also at the heart of the boarding
experience.
MEET THE HEAD
We caught up with the Head of Dolphin
School, Adam Hurst, and ask him a few
searching questions to discover more
about his background and values...
The world we are preparing our young
people for is constantly evolving – how
do you lay the best foundations to
prepare pupils?
Our pupils get to see and experience an
enormous amount to supplement lesson
content, through our diverse and creative
trips programme. Approaching each
learning experience with an open and
inquisitive mind is something we actively
promote and encourage. Our DPQs
(Dolphin Project Qualifications for Years
3-8) also stimulate and develop flexible
thinking, adaptability and collaboration, which are key skills in a
rapidly evolving world.
If you could invite anyone, living or dead, to speak at the
school, who would it be and why?
I have always been a keen sportsman. Listening to Michael
Jordan or Roger Federer talk about mental strength and how
they approached big moments in their respective sports, or faced
injury or career setbacks, would be eye-opening and inspiring for
children and adults.
What book would you implore all pupils to read?
As an English teacher, I can list so many books that might be
considered a ‘good read’. However, I feel strongly that books are
personal and everyone will respond differently to anything they
read. My advice to pupils would be to read something that takes
them to another time or place, so they can let their minds switch
off from reality and explore another world.
How would you like each pupil to reflect on their time at the
school?
With a smile. Dolphin School is unique in many ways, and
provides such a positive experience and a lifelong love of
learning for our children. So many past pupils who return to visit
the school (many as prospective parents) comment on what a
wonderful education they received, and how lucky they were;
others, who are visiting the school for the first time, feel the same
and frequently say “I wish I had come to a school like this”, and
that is the best possible feedback we could hope for.
having a sparkling, white smile.
Teeth straightening, whether for minor tooth movements or very
‘wonky’ teeth, transforms lives, improving people’s confidence,
helping them both in work and in social situations. CrownWood
Dental & MediSpa, located in Bracknell, is a leading provider of
Invisalign, a discreet solution that allows people to go about their
fixed braces, treatment involves the use of custom-made aligners
made of smooth, comfortable and virtually invisible plastic.
As a special Spring package, the clinic is hosting an Invisalign
Open Day on Saturday 15th April (8am – 5pm) where patients
can enjoy over £1,500 in savings for Invisalign treatment if they
book on the day. As well as a FREE 30 minute consultation at the
oral scan will actually
unveil how their new
Losing teeth can be
distressing, so for people
that have lost teeth, either
from decay or trauma,
people it’s all about smiling, speaking and socialising again with
confidence! It may be that you have uncomfortable or ill-fitting
dentures and would prefer a permanent solution.
Crownwood Dental & MediSpa is hosting another special event,
a Dental Implant Open Day on Monday 22nd May (8am – 5pm).
It’s a great chance to benefit from a FREE 30-minute consultation
MUSSELS
with Burrow hill
cider and bacon
BY MARK HIX
SERVES 4-6
2kg mussels, washed and the
beards removed
1 small onion, peeled, halved
and finely chopped
2 cloves of garlic, peeled and
crushed or grated or a few
leaves of wild garlic, shredded
6 rashers of good quality rindless
streaky bacon, finely chopped
A good knob of butter
400ml cider
100ml double cream (optional)
2tbsp finely chopped parsley
Salt and freshly ground black
pepper
METHOD
In a large pot big enough to fit the mussels
(you may need two, depending how many you’re
feeding), gently cook the onion, garlic and bacon in
the butter for 2-3 minutes to soften the onion.
Add the cider and simmer for a minute or so. Add the mussels,
cream and parsley, season and cook with a lid on for a few
minutes, stirring every so often until all the mussels have opened.
Serve immediately in bowls with the liquor.
CRISPY OYSTER,
STEAK AND
HORSERADISH SALAD
BY MARK HIX
I LOVE A BIT OF SURF AND TURF, ESPECIALLY WHEN
YOU ARE DEALING WITH THE BEST POSSIBLE
INGREDIENTS AVAILABLE. THIS COURSE MAKES A
GREAT LIGHT STARTER OR MAIN COURSE.
SERVES 4 AS A STARTER
300-350g sirloin, rib or fillet steak
4 rock oysters, shucked and any juice reserved
A couple handfuls of watrecress
Vegetable or corn oil for deep frying
A small piece of fresh horseradish root
Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
For the batter
2 tbls gluten free self raising flour
Enough chilled sparkling water to mix into a light batter
For the dressing
1 large shallot, peeled, halved and finely chopped
2 tbls good quality red wine vinegar
6 tbls extra virgin rapeseed oil
The juice from the oysters
METHOD
Preheat about 8cm of oil to 160-180°C in a large thick bottomed
saucepan or electric deep fat fryer
Meanwhile lightly oil and preheat a ribbed griddle pan, season
the steak well and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side, keeping
it nice and rare then transfer to a plate to rest. Whilst the steak
light batter and season. Dip the oysters into the batter and deep
fry for 30 seconds or so or until crisp, turning them with a slotted
spoon then transfer onto some kitchen paper to drain.
season. Slice up the steak and arrange on serving plates with
the watrecress, spoon over the dressing, place the oyster on top
and grate the horseradish over the top.
HOME EXTENSIONS:
Where to Start?
With the hassle and costs that come with
moving house, it’s no surprise so many of
us choose to extend our homes to create
more space and add value too. But there’s
a lot to think about when you’re extending
your home. So we’ve asked the property
advice site HomeOwners Alliance (hoa.
org.uk) about some of the essential things
you need to ask yourself first.
1. HOW MUCH VALUE WILL MY
BUILDING PROJECT ADD?
Firstly, it’s a good idea to establish
whether your planned extension will add
value to your home. A good local estate
agent should be able to give you an
indication of how much your extension
would increase your property’s value by.
They will be able to say what houses like
yours locally have that puts them in the
higher price bracket, whether that’s an
extra bedroom, bathroom or something
different. This is important research and
may have a bearing on how much you’re
prepared to spend and what projects you
tackle first.
2. DO I NEED PLANNING
PERMISSION?
You can perform certain types of work
without needing to apply for planning
permission; these are called “permitted
development rights”. Whether or not
your home extension is covered under
permitted development will vary on a
number of factors such as whether your
house is detached, a semi-detached or
a terrace and the size of your proposed
extension. And there are other conditions
that must be met: for example, if the
extension is more than half the area of
land around the original house, you will
need planning permission. For more
information visit Permitted development:
guide for homeowners at hoa.org.uk.
3. DON’T FORGET BUILDING
REGULATIONS APPROVAL
Regardless of whether or not planning
permission is required, a house extension
will need to comply with building
regulations. Speak to your builder about
who will be responsible for submitting
a building control application. They
should then work with building control
officers in your local council to ensure
compliance. But remember ultimately it is
the homeowner’s responsibility to ensure
this has been done. So once the building
work is complete, you should obtain a
completion certificate. This confirms that
the building work complies with the local
authority regulatory standards. It is a
good idea to get this before handing over
final payment to the builder.
4. DESIGNING YOUR EXTENSION
There’s no law saying you need to use an
architect, even for large renovations and
builds. But it’s certainly easier to have
a professional draw up the designs and
using an architect will generally mean
you’ll get a better end result. Architect
fees can range from 3% to 15% of the
total build cost; the amount you’ll pay will
depend on various factors including your
location and the amount of involvement
you want your architect to have with your
project. So if you’re using an architect
you’ll need to factor these fees into your
budget. To search for architects in your
area visit hoa.org.uk/services/find-anarchitect-near-me/
5. GETTING STRUCTURAL
CALCULATIONS
You’ll likely need plans and technical
structural drawings if your extension
requires any structural changes. These
will be an important part of getting
planning permission, complying with
building regulations and for your builder
to follow. A structural engineer can
provide these. Shop around and speak to
a few structural engineers to get the best
price and service.
Ca’Pietra
6. FINDING THE RIGHT BUILDER
The key to any successful home
extension are professional, reliable
trusted tradespeople. When it comes
to getting the right builder, personal
recommendations from friends or family
members who have used the builders
is a good starting point, and also look
at online review sites when comparing
builders and other contractors.
Once you’ve narrowed down your search,
ask to visit one or two of the builders’
completed projects to ensure you’re
happy with the work and level of finish.
Bear in mind you may need to wait
several months to get the builder you
want. So start the search early.
7. GET QUOTES
The cost of a home extension will depend
on the type of extension, the size, the
structural work involved (will you need
steels?) and where you are undertaking
the project. According to Checkatrade, a
standard 20m² extension could typically
cost £36,000 (+VAT) to £52,000 (+VAT),
whereas a garage conversion typically
costs £7,500 (+VAT) -£20,000 (+VAT)
and a 30m² loft conversion could cost
£37,500 (+VAT) to £60,000 (+VAT).
However, whenever you are undertaking a
renovation project, it’s always a good idea
to shop around. We recommend getting
quotes from three different contractors
for the work. You’ll usually need to ask at
least five firms to get three quotes.
8. SETTING A BUDGET
When setting a budget for your job, start
by making a list of everything you would
like included. Compare your quotes
item by item and when pricing services
and materials always check the VAT is
included. We’d also recommend setting
aside around 10% of the total cost for
unexpected additional costs.
Where to splurge on your extension
We would recommend that if you can
afford it, you engage an architect for your
extension. You will pretty much always
end up with a better end product. They are
highly trained and especially good at seeing
the “big picture”. They make the best use
of the space you have, give interesting
designs, ensure the light is right, the feel is
good, and the house works.
Architects are usually good at ensuring the
work is professionally done. They are aware
of planning and permitted development
guidelines and will ensure the build meets
the requirements of building control and
that you have a structural engineer if you
need one. An architect can also help you
find the best builder, project manage the
whole works, and keep within budget.
The architect is the expert eyes and ears,
whose job it is to represent your interests
with builders and local authorities. They
could save you a lot of time and hassle.
How to save on your extension
An extension is big bucks. There’s no
getting around that. So take advantage
of sales to get what you want for the best
price. Don’t wait. This goes for everything
from tiles to sofas. With current supply
issues being experienced by many
companies, you’ll be pleased you ordered
early. And don’t forget to ask your builder
or architect if they can get you a trade
discount for anything you have said you
would source.
A lot of people choose to save money
on building projects by doing elements
themselves. For some people, knocking
down a false wall or destroying and
removing an old kitchen themselves will
save some money. At the other end of the
project, if you’re a dab hand at DIY then
you may decide to save by painting and
decorating the rooms yourself.
9. OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
Party Wall Agreements and your
neighbours
A party wall is the shared wall, usually
between a terrace or semi-detached
house, and divides the homes of two
separate owners. It also includes
garden walls built over a boundary and
excavations close to a neighbour’s
property (within three or six metres,
depending on the depth of the new
foundations). Party Wall Agreements
are most commonly needed for loft
conversions and extensions that need
the insertion of steel supports, a damp
proof course and/or digging of new
foundations.
Your home insurance cover
And before starting your project it’s
important that you contact your home
insurer to advise them about the works.
The extension will likely increase the
rebuild cost of your house. Insurers
take this into account when pricing
premiums. While building work is being
undertaken, it could put the property at
risk of damage. And if you don’t let your
insurer know and there’s a problem with
the property at some point, you may find
your policy is void.
You should also check that any
builder working on your property has
professional indemnity insurance to cover
the costs should something go wrong.
LIGHT IT UP
As well as being essential for utilising
the space, good lighting is key to
making a space inviting. You’ll need
a mix of safety lighting that covers
pathways and walls, and then some
softer light to pool on the table.
Rechargeable table lamps are a great
option, as are festoon lights. You can
string these on metal shepherds hooks or
even get a bar that clips to the table so
you can hang them along the length.
DINING OUT
There are a myriad of options for
seating, including rising tables to allow
you to transition from lounging to dining.
When you’re choosing your furniture,
make sure you go for one with a good
guarantee as you’ll want it to stand the
test of time.
Also think about how many seats you
will need - it’s better to go for an option
that suits you 95% of the time, with
options to supplement with additional
modular seating as and when required.
SOFT FURNISHINGS
Adding texture and softness really
transforms a space. You can use regular
cushions and blankets, just make sure
to bring them in at night.
Covering the floor with an outdoor rug
can really make the space feel complete.
NOTES FROM THE
Garden
In this edition, our regular contributor
Matt Biggs tells us how there is much
joy to be gained from just putting a little
effort into brighting up our gardens in
anticipation of summer...
With the Coronation celebrations and summer on the horizon
we can add so much to our gardens, and the enjoyment we gain
from being in them.
Growing from seed is a great option – whether you are an
experienced gardener or just discovering your garden a packet
of seeds is a magical thing. It is also a really good way to get
children into gardening, there is something wonderful about
sprinkling some tiny seeds into a tray or directly into the soil and
then seeing those tiny green shoots popping up, and of course,
seeds are very reasonably priced too.
No two years are the same with growing conditions varying – sun,
rain, light levels, pests and diseases, all of these have a huge
impact on how successful you are but the trick is to sow little and
often. If you want to try your hand at veggies there are all sorts
of things you can plant, from’ cut and come again’ lettuce to
courgettes, spinach, herbs – the choice is endless and the reward
is on your plate - and with prices rising in the shops some home
grown treats will not only taste great but ease the burden on the
finances too.
If you need instant colour then head for the garden centre or
nursery and don’t forget local gardening groups too. Gardeners
are generous souls and often sow more than they can use, or
have seeds harvested from last year to share.
Even if your space is limited you can still go mad and create
a hanging basket, the bigger and bolder the better and you
can even go patriotic with a red, white and blue arrangement.
Whatever you do in your garden this summer make sure you plan
in time to enjoy it too – the benefit of just sitting and watching the
birds and bees and butterflies getting on with stuff is very, very
therapeutic!
For more advise, visit Matt Bigg’s website:
*Make sure to cover your hanging baskets if
the forecast predicts a late frost!
Help for Those who
Care for Others
Professor June Andrews discusses what makes a
carer, and how her new book ‘Carers and Caring’
can give some much needed advice to those who
find themselves looking after a friend or loved one...
Who are carers? To those who have
a relative or friend that they care for,
it might seem odd that this is even a
question. It needs to be asked for two
reasons. First, because sometimes the
people who do it as part of their job
are also sometimes called ‘carers’. And
second, because family and friends who
do caring work often say that they are not
‘carers’. You may be a family member or
friend who rejects the idea of being called
a ‘carer’.
Even if you don’t recognise that as
yourself, you may be one those people
who provide care as an act of love,
loyalty, duty, kindness – or even by
accident – looking after an ill, older, or
disabled family member, friend, partner,
or someone in your community. It may
be a few hours a week or round the clock
every day, in their own home or from a
distance.
My aim to help people see advantages of
allowing others to call you ‘a carer’. What
others say doesn’t change your personal
relationship, and I believe you must allow
them to use this label. This is because
a lot of the outside help that is on offer
is only available to anyone defined as a
carer. And you deserve that help.
Obvious examples are when health
and social services talk about ‘Carer’s
Allowance’ and ‘Carer’s rights’. This
language used in their regulations, laws
and administration is an imposition,
but both you and to the person you are
caring for could benefit hugely from this
support. Acknowledging that you have a
caring role opens the door. Keeping your
identity as husband, daughter, wife, son,
friend, neighbour or relative is important,
but if you allow yourself to be known in
addition as their ‘carer’, it just makes life
easier. No one likes being labelled, but
there is a good reason to be pragmatic
about this definition.
This is why I’ve written a book just for
carers. The aim is to save you time and
reduce the cost of caring by advising
on common problems and ways round
the system, and sources of help. Carers
need practical advice that is easy to read
and based on experience and evidence.
Official processes are
complicated, and it can
take time to search for
answers, being referred
from pillar to post, when
dealing with health and
social care systems.
My focus in “Carers and
Caring” is on people
caring for older, frailer
friends and family. Many
of the problems are similar
for people who care for younger people,
people with complex health needs or
children, but there are very important
differences.
Caring can be a joy and a privilege. It’s
part of human life to care for others, and
for many people the involvement is a
source of great happiness. It is a chance
to give back to people who have given
of themselves all their lives. If you are
having such a wonderful experience, you
might wonder why the focus is on where
things have gone wrong, are difficult, or
could be made better. That’s because
this book is about when things are tough.
The ‘Joy of Caring’ is maybe the next
book for me to write! Highlighting and
offering solutions to the tough stuff is
intended make your caring experience
less difficult now, allowing more space
for the joyful stuff. You are the expert on
this person and how they live.
But even an expert needs
some fresh ideas occasionally.
There is more on my website
at www.juneandrews.net
including an A to Z of caring.
Living well with Parkinson's
ADVERTISING FEATURE
April marks Parkinson’s Awareness Month. Often associated with its
distinctive tremor, Parkinson’s is the fastest growing neurological
condition in the world...
Being diagnosed with a
degenerative disease is
never easy. However, in my
years helping individuals and
families make empowering
care choices, I have seen
that – with the right treatment,
lifestyle and support – it is
possible to lead a fulfilling and
happy life with Parkinson’s.
Understanding Parkinson’s
Parkinson’s is caused by the
breakdown or death of brain
cells that produce dopamine
– a hormone that helps regulate the body’s movement. A
reduction in dopamine is behind many of the symptoms of the
disease.
In the UK, around 145,000 people have Parkinson’s. Scientists
still don’t know exactly what causes it but many agree that
a combination of genetic and environmental factors is likely
responsible.
While a cure is not yet know, there are ways to manage
Parkinson’s symptoms and continue to live well.
Parkinson’s and care
Treatments including physiotherapy and medication such
Kim Mears
as levodopa can help greatly with managing Parkinson’s
symptoms, maintaining independence and improving quality of
life. Along with these, the right diet, exercising, socialising and
stimulation are key.
Parkinson’s affects people differently, and can progress at very
different rates. As the condition advances, the person’s mobility
or mental ability declines and often people need increasing
assistance.
At some point, regular professional support is likely required.
This may be in the form of care at home, or the person and their
family may consider the benefits of 24/7 care in a residential or
nursing home.
Living with Parkinson’s, or supporting someone with it, is a
very unique journey. Fortunately there is a wealth of information
available. The charity Parkinson’s UK is a great first start (they
have a local branch and support group you can reach on 0344
225 3744). So is speaking with your GP. And if you, or a loved
