from school as soon as it was over, for

fear of having to talk to anybody. Even

as a young man, when he was elected

to his first leadership position as a

member of the Executive Committee of

the Vegetarian Society, he attended

every meeting, but was too shy to

speak.

“You talk to me quite all right,” one

of the members asked him, confused,

“but why is it that you never open your

lips at a committee meeting? You are a

drone.” When a political struggle occurred

on the committee, Gandhi had

firm opinions, but was too scared to

voice them. He wrote his thoughts
