SpeakUp Association, whose mission is
to “help foreign-born professionals to
succeed in life through enhancement in

reads the organization’s home page.

Curious about what speaking one’s
mind looks like from an Asian perspective,
I signed up for the class and, a few
Saturday mornings later, found myself
sitting at a desk in a starkly modern
classroom, the Northern California
mountain sun streaming through its
