Fred E. Nelson was born and raised in the urban jungle of New 

York. He completed his degree at the Massachusetts Institute of 

Technology and, shortly after, worked at Wright-Patterson Air 

Force Base. There he joined the Beavercreek Junior Chamber 

of Commerce and was asked to pose in a canoe for publicity 

pictures used to announce an upcoming canoe race. Then, 

for the first time, he finds himself in a canoe paddling down 

the rivers of Little Miami, which commenced his passion for 

canoeing that would last a lifetime. He embarked on a total 

of 19 canoe trips that ranged from 11 to 36 days and totaled 

about 4,500 miles. His memoirs were logged by a friend 

and were read by his wife, Mary Jean. She enjoyed reading

Margery al Chalabi was born in a small working-class town in the Allegheny River Valley of Pittsburgh. The 

first member of her extended family to attend college, she put herself through with scholarships and parttime 

work, earning a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie 

Mellon University) in 1961. She studied at Athens Technological Institute (ATI) in Athens, Greece, receiving an MSc 

in Urban Planning and Regional Economics, in 1965. In Athens, Margery met Suhail al Chalabi, a fellow student at 

ATI, an architect from MIT, and the love of her life. They married in 1965; returned to the U.S.; and found interesting 

work in Chicago. Starting out at the Chicago regional office of HUD and City of Chicago, Margery extended her work 

on renewal and redevelopment with private consulting firms, conducting landmark work on these issues for HUD and 

other federal agencies; and with architectural firms planning downtown development in major cities. Suhail worked 

for Chicago’s two regional agencies: NIPC and CATS, as a senior official. Later, both served in the administration of 

Mayor Jane M. Byrne, Chicago’s first female mayor. When Chicago won the 1992 World’s Fair, they collaborated on 

writing the City’s Comprehensive Plan, Chicago 1992.

For the adults now and the adults yet to come, the coming-ofage 

experiences are part of life. Throughout life, we grapple with 

what is frivolous and important. I think this struggle is at its most 

animated in our childhood years. The frivolous and important (the 

vain and the profound) are all new to us in our youth. 

In our youth, many of us find it easy to hold onto a symbol of what 

we perceive as important or most important in life. Although the 

symbols will vary, the approach is basically the same. Simply 

put, the approach is catching “the brass ring” of life. 

Come with me on a journey of a young city girl of Generation 

“X” status to discover her initial symbol of what is important to 

what is unchanging. 

Our young city girl will not be alone in her journey. We have Aunt 

Wilma, Cousin Patrice, and Cousin Tiger, friends, teachers, and 

people we can only see from afar along for the ride. 

There are the quintessential effects of the 1970s and 1980s, such 

as 8 tracks and neon colors. Yes, this is somewhat a period piece 

of fiction. Nevertheless, I hope those who are before, during, 

and after this time period will relate to the story on some level. 

This story covers a little over a decade of the protagonist’s life, 

primarily in two-year intervals. 




There are plenty of references to pop culture and even a few 

historical events. However, keep in mind the question, “Who is He?” 

The story, as the title suggests, is a question that the protagonist 

struggles to answer. Some questions in life are simple yet infinite. 

Our city girl’s question is of the latter.
