After its cancellation in 2020 and the virtual conference in 2021, the London Book
Fair weathered through the pause prompted by the pandemic and graced the halls of
Olympia London anew in 2022—and we were there! The London Book Fair was one
A Conversation with Everton Robinson
Springing a
Way of Life
SAM CARTER
A virtue, a core value, a way of living—wisdom is
one of the most crucial qualities of man. It ushers other
virtues toward the good, effects other values into motion,
and determines a way of life.
A supposed fundamental attribute, yet the foundation
of wisdom is not deeply rooted in everyone. More often
than not, we learn wisdom when we are well along in
years through further experiences, deeper understanding,
and richer realizations. While life is a perpetual learning
process, do you think life would have been better had
you attained optimum wisdom earlier? Could you have
calculated your life decisions clearer? Should you have
realized your fullest potential sooner?
The Reading Glass Magazine, in our fourth issue with
the theme Spring to Life! Bringing Forth Little New Buds
of Hope, believes that wisdom should not be a by-product
of years worth of living but rather a foundation of a life
well-lived. Most share the common denominator of not
having a head start—living life like a pilot project, a test
run, a tiptoe in all of the trial and error. By now knowing
better, we owe it to our children to spring a way of life
that is founded in values and virtues that bring forth hope
for a new generation to be happy and healthy, sound and
successful. As we advocate to inculcate wisdom, we are
honored to have a virtual conversation with Everton
Robinson, author of A Child’s Guide to Wisdom.
For Everton, a child’s mind is like a freshly plowed
field with rich topsoil ready for planting. Parents and
guardians are responsible for sowing good seeds or weeds
will take root. And so, Everton champions the transferral
of wisdom from parents, guardians, teachers, grandparents,
and youth counselors to children. He cultivates fifty ‘seeds
of wisdom’ in his first-ever published book, A Child’s
Guide to Wisdom.
A valuable resource for parents to plant principles
of wisdom, A Child’s Guide to Wisdom helps children
form good habits, develop good decision-making skills,
exhibit sound character traits, and model good behavior.
Everton designed this parenting guide as a product of his
own experience as a parent to wonderful twin daughters
Candace and Lauren, who grew up into two of the finest
and wisest young ladies.
You may have learned wisdom later in life, but your
children don’t have to. As it is gained through experience,
understanding, and realization over the years, wisdom
can be instilled in children early on so they can embrace
it as a way of living, and head start a happy and healthy,
sound and successful life. In this insightful interview, get
to know more about author Everton Robinson and how
A Child’s Guide to Wisdom sprang to life.
Editor: What does a day in the life of an Everton
Robinson look like? Are you an early bird or a night
owl? What keeps you busy? What do you enjoy most
in your routine?
Everton: I am an early bird, so I usually wake up
around 6:00 a.m. each morning. Upon rising, I spend the
first hour of my day with the Lord—praying, worshiping,
singing praises to God with my guitar, reading my
scripture, and just spending time talking to the Lord.
Then, about three or four times a week, I go to the gym
for a 30 to 60-minute workout. By that time, I return
home famished, ready for breakfast! I have a great wife,
who prepares good, healthy meals for me. So, I am served
a hearty breakfast each morning and tune in to a bit of
news to update myself on current events. After that, my
workday as an investment advisor begins. This entails
contacting clients, making business calls, and conducting
research on various financial matters, economic trends,
and related issues. I am active in my church, serving as
4 | The Reading Glass Magazine

an associate minister, so I devote some time to church
matters. Additionally, I have several other businesses that
keep me busy as I work from home. The great thing about
working from home is that my wife is with me. She is
retired, and is a tremendous source of help and inspiration
in the administrative area of all of my businesses. This
situation allows us to spend a lot of time together. I am
a family man at heart, and enjoy being with my wife and
children. The fellowship and closeness of family and loved
ones are important to me and give me great joy. I also
love to read and learn, so I make time daily for reading
positive mental attitude books, striving to either learn or
reinforce at least one positive concept or thought daily.
You have a reputable 40 years of church leadership as
a minister, elder, worship leader, and steward. Can you
share how you are founded in faith?
I am from a fairly large family, the sixth of eight
children. My father was a minister—totally devoted to
the Lord and to the Church—and my mother was a great
example of a committed Christian. Needless to say, my
siblings and I grew up in the church. My Dad was, in
essence, “the chief cook and bottle-washer” of the Church
where I grew up. He cleaned and helped maintain the
building; and was involved in multiple ministries and
auxiliaries. He did everything in the church, even before
he became a minister. So, as children, we were obligated to
attend services and join in the Young People’s ministries
at church, no options there. But, by the time I reached
my later teenage years, I was ‘churched-out’—done with
it! I couldn’t wait to become of age to make my own
decisions, and I did! I left the church for about 10 years!
However, after stumbling around on my own during that
phase of my life…facing difficulties and disappointments
on my own with no ‘safety net’, I came to the realization
that I needed God; and that there was more to church
than simply attending church. I came to realize that a
relationship with God was the key to a happier, more
balanced life. When I fully understood who God is and
how much He loves me, I became totally committed to
God! That’s when my life changed! I began to get involved
in the things of God. I started working in the church:
teaching Sunday School, serving as a worship leader,
and guiding the youth. I initiated and led a marriage
enrichment group in the church, creating a forum that
facilitated couples coming together to fellowship, talk and
share. Even though I was not yet an ordained minister
at that time, I began receiving invitations to preach at
different churches because I just loved God and loved
the Word. So, again, once I came back to the Lord and
discovered who God was, there was NO stopping me!
My whole life changed!
As a church leader, you have already worked with
various church-based organizations, mentored a variety of
spiritual leaders, and even conducted marriage enrichment
programs. With all of these under your belt, was it a
smooth transition to write a book on parenting? How did
you become a writer? Were you always fond of writing?
Is becoming a published author your dream?
Oh yes, it was a smooth transition to author my book on
parenting because of the many encounters I had had with
parents, helping them with their children. In addition, my
work with church youth and the opportunity to observe
different parenting styles provided a seamless transition
to capture those experiences, which, years later, led to the
writing of my book. Based on these experiences, it was not
difficult at all to identify the need for my book because I
had observed situations that had worked and many that
had not worked. But, I really did not set out to become a
writer. As a matter of fact, the idea to actually write my
book was inspired by my wife. Years before I even met
my wife, I had attended a seminar where the presenter
spoke about how, during her youth, her military dad
had drilled her and her siblings on principles of success.
She explained that from time to time, her dad would
challenge and test them on their knowledge and recall of
the principles. I thought that was a unique teaching tool.
When my wife and I became parents, I was excited to
begin teaching our children the principles of wisdom. Our
girls were actually pre-schoolers at the time. As I moved
forward, I initially considered ten principles to begin my
‘great experiment’. As I was diligently drilling them and
teaching them, putting rhythm
to the definitions and
making the process
a fun experience of
‘call and repeat’,
my wife asked
m e , “ W h y
don’t you
write a book?”
So, with that
suggestion,
my wife
and I began

investigating the prospects of self-publication, thinking
I would just start with the ten principles. I then decided
to add 10 more principles and sent my manuscript to a
publisher. The response from the publisher was that my
book needed to comprise at least 100 pages. My answer
to that was to identify a total of 50 principles, and to
include with each principle a Certificate of Achievement.
My idea was that once the child mastered the principle,
the Certificate of Achievement could be removed from
the book, framed and displayed on the child’s ‘Wall of
Wisdom’. The ultimate product did not end up exactly
that way, but that was my original idea.
Your published title, A Child’s Guide to Wisdom, is a
collection of principles—or seeds as you have referred to
it—of wisdom. This is a product of your personal experience
as a parent. What inspired you to write this book? What
encouraged you to share your own parenting style?
Although it was not my lifelong dream to become
a writer, it IS my current dream to become a published
author, especially surrounding the topic of passing on
wisdom to young people. The whole world needs to
understand and embrace this topic. It is my belief that if
every child could have a firm grasp on the foundation of
wisdom at an early age, the world would be a much better
place. The children would not be as unruly as they are now.
Right now, I see parents just battling with rearing their
children. This is because, in many cases, we as parents
have given the child so much freedom, the child really
does not know what to do with that freedom. And the
parent does not know how to handle the situation, so
EVERYONE needs wisdom. Most people live emotional
lives—they don’t live lives of principle. They react to
things. But principles provide a framework that allows
one to direct his steps and think about his actions and
the consequences of those actions. Parents, as well as
children, need that.
This is a short yet impactful manual. How long did it
take you to finish it? Were there struggles and setbacks?
Can you share a fond memory while writing this book?
I began writing my book while commuting 45 minutes
on the train from my home to work and back. I was a
captive audience. So, during my commute each way, I
worked on the book, thinking about the content, and
how to phrase an easy-to-understand definition for each
principle. Within six months, I had identified all 50
principles. My fondest memories about writing the book
revolved around the quiet time traveling on the train.
With eyes closed, I spent that time creating, thinking,
forming the ideas, and determining how to ultimately
present the principles included in the book. It was exciting
to see my work coming into existence!
You have integrated a reward system into your parenting
style. Apart from the recognition as a validation for good
behavior, do you believe an incentive in monetary value
is an essential driving factor even at an early age?
Absolutely! At the end of the day, we all work for
money. Ultimately, all the training we give our children
throughout their lives is designed to equip them with
the skills and mindset to make money, take care of
themselves and be self-sufficient. This statement is not
intended to diminish the importance of developing
happy, healthy, good-natured, well-balanced,
responsible and respectful children. But, we
cannot deny the significant role that money
plays in affording us the opportunity to
achieve and build happy, healthy lives.
In my view, if we submit money to
wisdom, the money ‘spends’ better.
What I mean to say is, if we teach
our children wisdom, and link or
subordinate money to wisdom,
then wisdom will always lead
money and the important
issues of money—
pertaining to financial
responsibility: saving,
spending, giving and
good stewardship—
will follow in the right
direction. Since we are
all working for money
anyway, we as parents
might as well begin
teaching our children
the value of money from
when they are young.
My observation is that
children understand and
sense the importance
and the value of money at an early age. So, what
we want to do is subject money to wisdom, and
let wisdom lead the way.
6 | The Reading Glass Magazine

The fifty seeds of wisdom you have curated to cultivate
in a child’s mind are all key factors for a child to grow as
a happy and healthy person and be a sound member of
society. If you have to choose only one, what definitive
principle would you prioritize as a foundational human
quality among the fifty?
Hands down—Wisdom is the Principle! Just think
about the definition of wisdom I offer in the book—
“Wisdom is knowing what to do
and doing it when you are supposed
to do it, and knowing what NOT
to do and NOT doing it!”
Just think: if we all would follow that principle, how
wonderful the world would be! The problem is—we don’t
follow that principle. And because we don’t honor the
principle, we need the police and fire department, and
all other types of measures to protect and rescue us
because we step out of line. What do we spend all
of our time doing with our children as they grow?
Teaching them right from wrong! What is that?
That’s wisdom! My book, A Child’s Guide to Wisdom,
presents the principles of wisdom in the form of
short ‘catch phrases’ to be taught
and repeated over and over
again. With consistent
practice, these principles
will become an inherent
part of the child’s thinking
and nature. When the time
is right, those principles will
come alive in the behavior
of your child! This has
been the experience
with my children, as
we used the teaching
of the principles
for correction and
direction, encouraging
them to identify what principle of
wisdom is present or absent in everyday
situations and encounters. Wisdom
came alive in our children and will do
the same for yours!
Advocating for wisdom, how did you acquire this
coveted quality? Was this instilled in you early on, or
did it grow in you later in life?
Once I came back into a relationship with God, I
began to read the Bible daily. And as I read the Bible,
the concept of wisdom sparked an interest in me. I
began to understand the concept of wisdom in the Book
of Proverbs in the Bible. I also read about the story of
how God spoke to a very young King Solomon, inviting
him to ask for whatever he wanted, assuring him that
his wish would be granted. Instead of riches and fame,
King Solomon asked for a discerning heart (wisdom), so
that he might know right from wrong. Because Solomon
did not ask for wealth or vengeance over his enemies,
God responded by giving King Solomon wisdom AND
the riches. With that, Solomon became the richest and
wisest man in the world! This story spoke volumes to
me. From that point on, I began to seek wisdom, in the
books I read for personal growth, in my Bible study, in
my association with others and as a way of life.
You are already an accomplished man and an inspiration
to many. But looking back at hindsight, do you think
life would have been better had you attained optimum
wisdom earlier?
Without question, my life would have been much better
had I attained wisdom at an earlier age. At one point
early on, my life was like a piece of floating driftwood. I
didn’t know what I was doing or where I was going. I had
no dreams. I was just going along with the program: and
the program said grow up, get an education, get a good
job, work real hard and you will be successful. And that
is what I did. I followed the pattern that was set before
me. But if I had learned the principles of wisdom, I would
have known early on what I wanted to do and how I
wanted my life to be, because I would have sought out
wisdom and counsel from people who were successful. I
didn’t know to do that. But, I thank God for how He has
directed my life and for the wise people He has placed in
my path. I have also been blessed with a very wise wife,
who keeps me on my toes and helps me stay on track.
So yes, I think my life would have been so much better
had I had direction from day-1, and been exposed to
wisdom at an early age.
On top of your parenting manual, what advice would
you give, especially to first-time parents?
The Reading Glass Magazine | 7

My advice to first-time parents is to understand and
remember that you are in charge of your child. Your child
is not in charge of you. Psychologists tell us that human
beings repeat behavior that is reinforced. Therefore, if you
share good teachings and ‘sow good seeds’ into your child,
taking charge of the daunting responsibility of imparting
wisdom to your child at an early age, then he or she will
fall in line. The nature of children when they are very
young is to follow their parents. So, the parents need to
be parents in laying out the principles of wisdom for their
children. Do this and the children will follow. Parents
need to understand that their child has no direction
except that which the parents themselves provide for
them. Therefore, the parents need to get wisdom—right
now—and then begin teaching the children the principles
of wisdom—RIGHT NOW!
King Solomon said in Proverbs 4 of the Bible that when
he was a child, still tender and cherished by his mother,
his father took hold of him and said, “Get wisdom…
Though it costs all you have…Get understanding!” From
a little baby, Solomon heard these teachings. No wonder
when God asked Solomon what he wanted, the answer
was a no-brainer! Wisdom was what Solomon asked for
and received! My ultimate advice for parents is to get
wisdom themselves and teach wisdom to their children
while they are young and while they still only want to
please YOU. Do this, and you will have wise children
who will make you proud.
A Child’s Guide to Wisdom has been a guiding light
in raising children in an age of moral confusion. Do
you plan on publishing more parenting wisdom? What
is your next literary step? What’s in store for everyone
from Everton Robinson?
I absolutely do plan to author another book which
will be a sequel to A Child’s Guide to Wisdom, introducing
another 50 principles of wisdom. Additionally, I have a
few other literary works in mind. My wife and I have also
started our own publishing company—Laurcan Publishing,
LLC. As we make progress with publishing my books,
we will expand in publishing the works of other people.
The important thing about books is that everyone has
a unique story to share that will help humanity. Books
provided a perfect medium to accomplish that end.
EMOTIONAL
RESILIENCE:
Practical Solutions
by Yudelka Columna, MSW, LCSW
The book Molding A Man will help any parent, mother, or
father raise their son or young man they have the privilege of
knowing. It covers various topics that young men need to hear
and discuss. The topics are broken down to each school year
level the young man has reached. The topics give a starting
point for parents to have the much-needed talks about keeping
their young man on the right path. Using the book will give
any young man a higher chance to succeed in life.
In times of despair, visualizing better days ahead can
prove to be challenging. Grief has a way of making even
the hardiest people believe that they’re all alone and helpless
THINGS I WANTED MY GRANDSONS
TO KNOW BEFORE I LEAVE
author Kenn Stobbe believes helped him live a successful,
God-centered life.
As part of this collection, Kenn addresses life, love, common
sense, manners, morals, values, and beliefs, with a sprinkling of his
while others are more serious and thought-provoking.
Things I Wanted my Grandsons to Know Before I
CRANIAMA: MY SKULL’S REMEDY
by Bryan D. Sisson
Author Bryan Sisson takes an interesting ethnographic
approach to describe how the human brain recovers from a
traumatic injury. By showing recovery through the lens of his
two-decade-long experience, he shows that recovery involves far
more than just restoring damaged brain tissues. This is because
a traumatic brain injury wipes the brain of all useful memory
and forces the survivor to relive learning experiences, beginning
with infancy and progressing through childhood, teen years, and
adulthood, to finally arrive at the status of the actual age of the
TBI patient.
An applied anthropologist who completed his master’s
degree in 2007 from the University of North Texas, Sisson
presented a poster depicting pain identification post-trauma at
the International Brain Injury Association medical conference in
The Hague, Netherlands. He writes Craniama, an ethnographically
valid exposition, in hopes that others will better understand the
inner thought processes of those who have suffered severe head
injuries and wants to give hope to survivors and their families.
Craniama is not only for gloomy investigations of the traumatic
psyche but preventative analysis towards celebration!
Marios Skarvellis, Author of
“True Power of You”,
a self-help book,
on ‘Tracing Our Roots to Reaping
Our Triumphs’
have been asked on numerous occasions to define what
I is self-development. For me, it is evolving your personal
growth mindset, becoming more aware of your DNA ancestral
habits, routines, and beliefs that formed your character and
presence in your daily life experiences, reassessing and refining
them to suit the values, ethics, morals, and standards you want
to live by intentionally and not habitually. Destiny challenges
us with life’s unexpected experiences and adversities. What
intentionally prepared mindset do you have to face them? First,
you need to master your own self-talk, becoming more aware
of being more optimistic and having faith in your decisionmaking.
Speaking to yourself regularly with positive, confident
feedback begins a new mindset that doesn’t allow fear, doubts,
anger, and impulsive habitual emotions to control your outcomes.
Did you know that stress is the foundation of all mental
health issues and is the biggest disease we suffer from on this
planet? No one escapes. Stress is a buildup of our own negative
self-talk and constant chatter 24/7 over the immediate thoughts
and emotions that do not please us on an everyday basis over
a variety of issues in our life.
Our constant repetitive chatter interferes with our human
body machine’s normal default mind-body communication
and fuels our stresses, phobias, addictions, and a feeling of
separation from family, friends, and society.
These negative thoughts and
emotions are manifested and stored
by our brain in our cellular and muscle
memory, causing tension, pain, and
disease in our bodies. If we allow
our subconscious mind’s ancestral
DNA routines, habits, and
beliefs to go unchecked, our
human body, where our
subconsciousness home
resides, where will we live
safely and confidently
on our life’s journey?
For every
thought, there
is an emotion
attached to it. So for every emotion, there is a thought anchored
to it. Our self-chatter creates our mental demons that challenge
and question everything we do with complacency and doubt,
so who wins the good or bad thoughts and emotions you have,
THE ONES YOU FEED THE MOST.
Being in control of our thoughts and emotions and
assuring they are positive and optimistic ones that assist and
complement you resonates through your entire body bringing
balance to your Mind, Body, and Spirit.
Therefore, your brain’s first default response is a negative
one since you focus too much on what is not right or makes
you unhappy in all areas of your life.
Your brain processes all information 24/7, collecting data
from your conscious emotional ego, ancestral DNA subconscious
files, your 5 physical senses: sight, hearing, smell, touch, taste,
and your repetitional thoughts and emotions daily to continue
forming your habits, routines, and beliefs that do not always
support or aid you to determine your best actions in every
moment of your life.
The human body is an intricately complex flesh and blood
living machine processing information from every cell of your
body, sending and receiving information 24/7 to carry out a
preventative maintenance program for you to achieve your goals.
You are not to blame for the condition you are in mentally,
physically, and spiritually from birth. However, you do need to
take back control and responsibility for your own well-being
and physiology by reprogramming and fine-tuning your existing
mind-body communication to be more optimistic with positive
thoughts and emotions.
We have been conditioned in our life vehicles from ancestor
to ancestor, generation to generation, a stress memory virus that
has jammed our natural harmonics. Our body’s true harmonic
frequency connects to the universal flow of Energy. Using the
power of free will and through your intentions, you attract what
you desire into your life.
My philosophy is that “Energy flows where attention
goes,” so where we place our attention is paramount to our
well-being and longevity.
Are you aware that the human body was created to be
ambidextrous, in harmonious balance with itself, the left and
right sides of our body to be equal? Our collective world
consciousness has been conditioned to use our right side too
much. Try to be more aware of giving focus and attention to
using your left hand and leg more often to balance your body’s
symmetry. Check out my Destressercise program for more
details, and visit www.mariosskarvellis.com.
“We are
not makers
of history.
We are
made by
history.”
Martin
Luther King, Jr.

HISTORY
A STEEP CLIMB:
Between Heaven and Hell
Lou, a war-torn vet, was indeed a man of spiritual
height and yet unaware of it, who, in the guck of war
settings, kept on searching for a life of meaning. He
continued to question the validity of war, or at least that
of political involvement, at the expense of the soldiers.
Serving in the US army from 1954 to 1957 and then
from 1965 to 1974, Lou realized how innocent lives were
lost, whether those of children used in wars to spy on
the opposite army or those of the young soldiers who
died in the incident of Hamburger Hill.
Lou was increasingly getting tired of the wars and
wanted to serve his fellow people, who, like himself, were
suffering from similar issues caused by wars: PTSD,
skins issues (due to exposure to Agent Orange), and
many other physical and psychological ailments. On the
other hand, his friend, John, who had first-hand spiritual
experiences, was also seeking God and a higher meaning
to life in his own way and through his own sufferings,
such as a stroke, (sometimes unwanted) spirit visits, etc.
THROUGH THE EYES OF JOHN:
THE ANNIHILATION OF NATIONS:
A Walk Through Heaven, Earth & Hell
The annihilation of nations can occur due to natural
disasters and warfare, but it can also occur from within
by separating citizens from their religious faith, family
structure, and basic values.
We are now in an ominous tunnel of forces that can
annihilate or sustain nations. Will there be one autocratic
world government or will there be independent nations
that allow for the freedom of choice to live in a democratic
or autocratic nation?
This is a treatise in which I spell out the problems
facing America and other nations today. I also follow the
journey of John, a religious school teacher, who sees this
spiritual destruction firsthand. I am concerned, as John
and all citizens in nations are, for the future of the world
for our children, grand and great-grandchildren, and all
generations to come.
Did they find the God they sought? What happens
to their friendship when the two are so different from
each other?
BROTHER
EDUARDO’S
MORTAL SIN,
CRIME AND FATE
by Rudy Leeman
A CHILD OF WORLD
WAR II WRITES:
Love Is Timeless In War
and In Peace:
A Truth Beyond Compare
by Lourdes A. Ongkeko, Ph.D.
The book is one story in three parts. Part 1 focuses on the
abuse of women and examples of the sexual abuse of children
in story form. Part 2 focuses on the international trafficking
of children and how our hero, Brother Eduardo Santore,
interacts in the destruction of one group of traffickers. Part
3 tells of how one child is rescued by Eduardo and his wife.
It concludes the fight of Italians to unite their peninsula
into one nation, Italia, how Eduardo is a part of it, and his
ultimate fate as the Mafia sets out to kill him.
The book recounts World War II when the Japanese
military occupied Baguio, Northern Luzon, the Philippines,
on December 8, 1941. Carpet bombing joined the populace’s
vocabulary; Filipinos were hoping they would be spared.
Sentry posts were installed and manned by fully-armed
soldiers. Each civilian who passed by the sentries was halted
to obey the act of bowing: not just a simple nod. Soldiers
demonstrated bows; no one proceeded to leave unless the
sentry illustrated “moving on.” Sentries corporally punished
those who failed to make the required low, low bow.
Written in the character of freckled, curly-headed Jeannie
REX AND FRIENDS
by Michele Wallace Campanelli
LITTLE
WINDOW VISITS:
On Lindenpopper
Lane
by R.J. Snyder
Rex was warned to stay away from humans, but that is a
pretty big problem! The human’s music means the world to
Rex. He loves to listen to the cavemen play their instruments
every day from up on the hill. One afternoon, Rex creeps
out of the forest to learn how to play an instrument with
the humans. Will the fearful humans reject him, or will
dinosaurs and humans alike learn that even the most unlikely
of friends can find harmony together?
Carefully selected Scripture matches the sentiment and
story of many of the pages of this enlightening children’s book,
and gives readers of all ages a clear view into the ultimate
love and salvation found when we come to believe in and
follow the lessons of Jesus Christ. Like the broken window
glass, our brokenness from sin can be fixed and made whole
again when we choose Him.
CHILDREN’S BOOK
THE OPOSSUM
AND
THE CATS
Artist and poet Marilyn Wassmann
offers a story for children that is both
exciting and informative, concerning
the unusual relationship between two
different kinds of animals drawn
together by necessity.
—

When an opossum finds an uninvited guest in his little hole, he decides to house the mother cat
in labor. Her five kittens, small as they may be, turned out to be naughty and playful, much to the
opossum’s surprise. Initially doubting if the help he extended is worth it, the opossum soon finds the
cat family’s presence in his hole heartwarming. But, childish and playful as they are, the kittens soon
find themselves in danger of drowning in a pond despite their mother’s warnings. With only the
opossum left to save them, they cling to his tail in order to get to safety.
A story of friendship, change, and love, The Opossum and the Cats teaches us how accommodating
others and the playfulness of the young change one’s life for the better.
HARRY THE
HUMMINGBIRD:
A Lesson Learned
by Patricia A. Thorpe
BABY CHICK:
An Easter Story
by Lois Lund
A book inspired by a story Author Patricia A. Thorpe
created while observing a hummingbird at her property at
through the eyes of a hummingbird. This book can be enjoyed
by children and can assist them in learning the importance
of these virtues.
One of Lund’s favorite stories to tell is about God’s
bountiful Easter blessings. In her book Baby Chick: An Easter
Story, she enlists the help of a baby chick in sharing a variety
of catchy poems and true tales about faith, joy, hope, and
Meet
Willy
Meet
Bailey
Mixed breed – a little bit terrier – a little
bit pit bull – a lot of junkyard dog
Pronoun: she/her
Age: 5 years old
Weight: 85 lb
Color: black and brown
Pronoun: he/him
Age: 3 years old
Weight: 49 lb
Color: white with
big black spots
Small German
Shepherd
Willy loves to chew anything
he can get his teeth on: shoes,
books, boots, magazines, dog
toys that squeak, rugs, yarn,
shoe laces. He especially enjoys
tearing apart the pillows
on the beds.
Bailey loves to wrestle with
Willy and chase and be chased
by Willy. She also loves to
shred paper towels, napkins,
mail and magazines.
The two dogs together make an odd-looking couple;
she is bigger, a little scruffier, but beautiful just the
same. The smaller, short-haired and totally smitten with
love for her.
They found each other in our neck of the woods when
Willy was a puppy playing in the new cornfield. They
chased each other, rollicked and played until they were
both tired out and lay panting in the sunshine being
cooled by the breeze from the nearby river. Bailey coaxed
Willy to follow her home to the far end of the Neck.
Bailey’s mom always left the front door open a crack so
Bailey could let herself in followed today by Willy. He
made himself at home jumping up on the couch for a
little nap. Bailey brought him her toys one by one, trying
to get him to come play some more. She finally carried a
mouth full of dog food to him, dropping it on the floor
in front of his nose. Even dogs know that the way to a
man’s heart is through his stomach.
Adventure is the tie that holds them together and
their adventure often seems to lead to trouble. The two
dogs love to go exploring and visiting the neighbors –
both the four-legged and the two-legged. The dogs wear
a GPS tracking device on their collars so they can be
found when they forget to come home.
One day after a dip in the water, they traveled south
along the river until they came to a beautiful park about
three miles from the neck. This place had lots of grass,
trees, campers, tents, dogs, and people. Bailey and Willy
jumped and played away the afternoon. Exhausted
from all the fun in the sun, it was time for a nap. When
Willy woke up,
Bailey was nowhere to be found! She was hungry and
followed her nose back home to food and safety.
Willy was in a panic when he woke. He couldn’t find
Bailey anywhere. He ran with his nose down trying to
find her scent. He circled and circled retracing where
they had been but no Bailey was to be found! Willy
could hear a golf cart coming. His mom followed the
GPS signal on his collar and was here to pick him up.
Willy didn’t want to leave without Bailey and would not
get on the cart for a ride home. Mom soothed him with
her calm voice and sweet-talked him with a dog treat.
Willy jumped onto the cart finally and they came home.
Other days the adventure takes them north through
the forest into the soybean fields on the other side. Both
dog moms use golf carts and the GPS trackers when
searching for the pair. Bailey usually responds to the honk
of a horn and Willy generally is not too far behind. The
bean plants are just tall enough to hide the dogs as they
travel through. Willy tends to keep his white-tipped
tail up like a high-flying flag as he runs. Watching the
field, you can see only his little flag following the rows.
Looking closely, you will also see Bailey’s black tips of
her ears appear. If you didn’t know better, you’d imagine
some kind of magic happening along the rows.
Most often they head west into a nearby housing
development with lots of dogs, kids, and treats. Willy’s
mom received a phone call explaining where Willy was
visiting, asking her to come and pick him up. He was on
the homeowners deck looking in at the three dogs inside
barking wildly, protecting their territory. The homeowner
shouted, “Be quiet and sit!” to his dogs inside and Willy
dutifully sat down outside, holding up his paw, begging
for a treat.
The river is the latest attraction. Both Bailey and
Willy’s homes overlook the St. Croix that runs between
Minnesota and Wisconsin. And both have easy access
for the dogs to the water. Willy at first was afraid to go
near the water but Bailey’s gentle coaxing brought an
end to that. Now at least once a day they head off for a
swim and a roll in the goose, duck, and deer poop in the
sand on the beach. They come home wet, green, slimy
and stinky – in need of a bath or a shower.
Bailey and Willy continue to find daily adventures
together. Where you see Willy, you find Bailey and
where you find Bailey, you see Willy. They are a happy
reminder that love can come from the most unexpected
places and that true love knows no boundaries, not even
size or breed. The river is their happy place and green
and slimy seems to be a daily occurrence. Love in the
Neck is Bailey and Willy. Life Is certainly better with
a best friend.
PARENTING & RELATIONSHIPS
THE RIGHT TO
A FULL LIFE
by Dorothy Fickenscher
AREN & ÉLISE
by Ettenig Sayam
Is passionate love reserved exclusively for the young? Can a
mature woman in the second act of her life not only shed old skins,
but can she utterly transform like a caterpillar into a butterfly?
Is intimacy a spiritual journey? This is a modern retelling of the
biblical story of Abraham and Sarah.
Aren Karajian is a widowed sixty-two-year-old solar technology
engineer originally from Armenia. Élise Douchet is a fifty-yearold
French teacher at a Boston prep school. She grew up in
Montreal, Canada but is originally from French Saint Martin
and Haiti. Élise comes to terms with turning 50 by going on
a hiking retreat in Vermont. She falls during a morning hike.
Aren quickly discovers that the grey-haired woman he rescues is
really quite striking and exotic. He is smitten. A dogged pursuit
ensues. A sultry romance flourishes. A miracle happens. Can a
miracle upend your life and shatter your relationship? In the
Boston Marathon, you must go through Heartbreak Hill to
finish the race. So it is for Aren and Élise.
Follow Aren & Élise as they embark on their couple’s journey,
make decisions that will alter the course of their relationship,
and shed light on the real meaning of life and commitment.
“In a world where exotic love and romance have been associated
with the young and vibrant, this love story takes on a different
plot, real proof that true explosive love is not limited to age…
It’s a read that will fly romance-loving fans to the moon and
leave them star-struck. Good work Sayam!”
— Lily Amanda, Hollywood Book Reviews
An upbeat account of a mother’s journey parenting twins
with different disabilities. It is a tale of advocacy outlining
the strategies used when working with doctors, teachers
and neighbors.
It describes how a mother explored options available to
her family, looking for the right “fit” and how, as a family, they
worked on the life skills that helped her son and daughter
become independent. The importance of communities and
the role they play in supporting an individual is explained. The
balance between safety and individual autonomy is explored.
The lessons shared are instructive to parents of children with
and without disabilities.
FORGET NOT, ALL OF
Inspiration for the
Single Parenting
Journey
by Ivory Shepherd-Roberson, Ph.D.
Oprah Winfrey’s Master Class Series in 2009 on the
Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) purported the idea that
our lives can be a class for others. This book was birthed on
that premise, to share my journey as a single parent in the
home. The number of single parents continues to rise in the
United States of America. This book was written reading
God’s hand in my affairs retrospectively, in the context of
praise, thanksgiving, and victory. It is my hope that by sharing
my spiritual analysis of the journey and ultimately witnessing
a successful outcome, I can inspire others on their journey.
The biggest influence on my enjoyment of reading
and writing was when I was home alone one day
after elementary school and spied a book in our
bookcase titled “A Treasury of the Familiar”, (Copyright
1942) which my mother had bought.
When turning its pages, I discovered it was amazing
and like a “Magic Carpet” taking me on fascinating
journeys all over the world. I would read aloud to myself
the works of Shakespeare, Longfellow, Edgar Allen Poe
and other authors who lived many years ago. I found
lurking in this book were all kinds of adventures for a
shy schoolgirl like me. My attachment to this book was
like having a friend at my side, seeing sunshine on a rainy
day and feeling comfort when I was feeling discouraged.
I have kept this book for over seventy years and now
it has a torn binding, worn and frayed edges and bent
pages, but not one page is missing. I’m sure this book
was the inspiration which led me to write poetry and
prose. I seemed to enjoy different words and continued
to read and write prose and poetry.
Later in elementary and middle school, I never
minded having to write school assignments. In high
school, I became the editor and story writer for our
school newspaper. Upon starting my college education
and entering Nursing school, my writing increased
greatly. Every week, we, student nurses, had to write
many documentations, essays and reports. Then, after
graduating, I married and birthed three children and
continued to write about family life. Later, a certain
incident contributed to my interest in writing. I attended a
women’s group where the speaker explained methods and
materials used in tracing a person’s family genealogy called
“Finding Your Own Roots”. She
even handed out samples
of types of materials. I
knew very little about
my family roots and
only had minimal
information, so I
decided to attempt
discovering more. Becoming fascinated with this, I spent
many late nights working on my family’s genealogy
information. I now have a family genealogy book which
is four inches thick and full of more relatives than I
ever imagined!
After working many years as a nurse in various areas
of the medical field, I saw that a nonprofit Long Term
Care organization was advertising for a Nurse/Writer
position. I could not get the words “Nurse/Writer” out of
my head nor even believe there was such a position about
the two things I loved the most…nursing and writing.
I was fortunate to be hired and there was never a
day I didn’t want to go to work. This organization had
short mid-morning devotions for employees in a large
chapel-like meeting room. Various persons were asked
to give devotions and I did agree, so I spent time writing
these also.
One morning after my devotion, a staff member
approached me and stated he thought I should write a
book. My only response then was “Oh?” But I soon found
myself taking his words to heart. I started gathering
devotions I had given and composing more until I had
written enough for a devotional book. I worked for that
organization as the Nurse/Writer for fifteen years until
my retirement.
A few years later, another endeavor came up quite
unexpectedly. I received a phone call from my son asking
if I would help a friend find his birthmother. Knowing
that I spent years working on our own family genealogy
sparked my son’s confidence in me to do this. I agreed
but this was a road I had never traveled, so I couldn’t
promise success. This experience was filled with smiles,
tears and unexpected twists and turns. Later it gave me
another occasion to do more non-fiction writing.
Still, my love of writing continues. I am thankful to
Writers’ Branding who has provided me with wonderful
information about this journey of writing and publishing
and getting an author’s words out into the world!
BERTHA’S SON
by Joseph N. Waddy
CONSPIRACY
by Alfred Adams
Bertha’s Son is an autobiography of a life filled with
challenges and successes. Despite the obstacles in his childhood,
Joseph N. Waddy was determined to succeed. With a high
school Cambridge certificate as a gateway to the world,
Joseph set out to develop a career in the medical field. He
eventually moved to the US to escape his country’s political
strife and seek a better life and be of service to mankind. Life
has never been easy for Joseph, but beneath all the adversity
is the triumph of Bertha’s son.
In this world that we live in, it’s tough to stand for what
is right. If you stand by what you believe because it’s the
right thing to do, there might be people who would not be
happy about that and would conspire for your loss. Let us
witness the story of Mr. Alfred Adams in his book, Conspiracy.
Would he be able to surpass the challenges and struggles
that are coming for him? Would he still choose to do the
right thing despite the consequences, or would he be afraid
to take the risk?
Leonard Sandberg’s
Biography
by Marilyn Sandberg Grenat
This is a biography of my Swedish immigrant father from
the province of Småland, Sweden, through Ellis Island, New
York City, New York. His life covered the great depression,
the atomic era, the industrial revolution, and the space age.
Nils Patrick Lennart (Leonard) Sandberg persevered and
persisted in all his contentions to subsist and progress in the
New World. He learned to do his best from his Blacksmith
father, which he, in turn, taught his children. He raised his
children at the Evangelical Covenant Church, instilled fairness,
honesty, kindness, trustworthiness, and Christianity, and
wanted them to be strong and upstanding citizens.
JESUS’ LITTLE ONES
for myself and not my body, there was one who knew the intense
emotional pain I had gone through and reached out to me. His
name is Jesus Christ. To the same degree, I saw the hunger to
A LIFETIME:
My Biography
by Myrna Lou Jastra
“A Triumphant Journey from Hell and From Hell to Redemption
[now entitled, The Walk I Took] by Lori Cameron is an honest
CHOICES
CONSEQUENCES
Life is about Choices and Choices bring Consequences
So in planning your life’s journey, it’s always good to KNOW
It’s like a garden and everything planted reflects your Character, Reputation, Personal Values and much MORE
Because…YOU REAP WHAT YOU SOW
In this world of uncertainties, painful challenges, unfriendliness, lack of love and disrespect for life
You must always be very careful as your future consequences are shaped by your present actions
And your kind generosity to persons will be rewarded accordingly
In gift packages of love sealed with a spiritual BOW
Because…YOU REAP WHAT YOU SOW
The same represents how you live your life every day
If you entertain a life of greed, selfishness, hatred, corruption and much MORE
And constantly treat other persons in the same manner as if you don’t care
As though they are not important to you in any way
Remember…YOU REAP WHAT YOU SOW
So my dear friends, let me confidently assure you
That life can be beautiful in so many ways
If only we would apply these three words to our everyday life
‘LIVE……LOVE……LAUGH’
And remember that everyone is important in their own eyes
And deserves to be treated with respect and dignity as we should KNOW
Because…WE WILL REAP WHAT WE SOW
So let's’ all be nice and courteous to each other
As we try to make better choices in our lives
It would certainly make this world a much loving place
We couldn’t ask for much more, you KNOW
Because there would be no reason to worry, so be careful with your actions
Always remember…WE REAP WHAT WE SOW
For young Mary Lou, life was an adventure. Her father
served in the military, and she traveled the world with
him and her family. His assignments took them to Alaska,
Virginia, Japan, Texas, and Germany, as part of the US Army’s
World War II. What was it like to grow up moving between
cultures? This is the story of one family bound to service in
the military at a time when the world was being redefined.
A story of triumph and turmoil while traveling through
the many phases of her life: childhood, married life, and
Nature, Science, Business, Computers and Artificial Intelligence
Mathematical
Milestones
At its core, Mathematical Milestones: Nature, Science,
Business, Computers and Artificial Intelligence by Dr.
Clement E. Falbo is about the story of the field of
Mathematics. It covers the history and evolution
of math through the years. Its interdisciplinary
contributions and relationships with other disciplines,
such as business, engineering, economics, and physics,
are also discussed. The book takes readers through
the rudimentary use of math to its most advanced
applications in contemporary times. Examples of
practical applications of math are also detailed in
this book. The book also does not forget to delve
into behind-the-scenes concepts like quaternions—a
mathematical notion used to represent orientation in
a three-dimensional space.
This book is based on the author’s classroom notes
EDUCATION & TEACHING
About the Author
Dr. Clement E. Falbo is an accomplished professor who has been teaching since 1958.
He holds BA, MA, and PhD degrees in Mathematics from the University of Texas in
Austin. He has taught at San Antonio Junior College, the University of Texas, Fresno
State University, and Sonoma State University. After his retirement in 1999, Falbo
volunteered at the Peace Corps and taught high school math in Zimbabwe. This book
is not his first work as he has previously written textbooks and articles published in
mathematical journals.
Falbo enjoins readers to be in awe of the progress mathematics as a discipline has
had through this book. Through his recounting of the invention of matrix algebra, non-
Euclidean geometries, imaginary numbers, and many more, readers can marvel at how
humanity can think of such solutions that continue to be useful to this day.
Professor Falbo provides us with food for
thought by hypothesizing that modern
mathematics was born when Abstract Algebra
was invented, and Non-Euclidean Geometry
was discovered in the 1800’s.
COVID-19
AND ITS
IMPACT
ON OUR
BUSINESS
LIVES IN
THE FUTURE
By
Nicholas S.
Prukop
INTRODUCTION
Having been a fitness professional (personal trainer and health coach) for 30 years and living in the midst of the
worst health crisis in a century, I am left wondering what will become of the fitness professional and the industry
that created MY profession.
If we are going to become almost exclusively “an online, virtual service” in the future, how will we have to change
our practices in order to meet the needs of our clients AND stay in business? Having been unable to work in a
traditional gym setting for months because of the closures of all the facilities in California, I have had to scramble
to stay afloat – along with millions of other Americans.
We ARE at a crossroads in many ways in this country but our health has been truly compromised now that we
are all facing a virus that none of us was able to fight naturally. The truth is that all businesses in this country are
at risk of failure – not just the small ones but the giants as well.
Life will never be the same in the future and I would like to offer some thoughts and insights – and some wisdom
– on how we might approach what is possible for each of us to become once the pandemic is under control (this
will be most of 2021 according to most estimates).
DISCUSSION
1. “THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX”
This idea came to me – as it must for all of us – that because what “was” our previous role in the workforce is
changing so dramatically, we need to become “more than we were”. Markets and the needs they represent are
shifting so dramatically every day. The virus is in control of the circumstances we now face and for some time
into the future.
44 | The Reading Glass Magazine

I am becoming clear that I will NEVER train someone again in the settings “I grew up in” because they
may cease to exist. The reality is that trainers will have to find ways to educate and train clients in new
ways using all the technology available to us. This means all platforms of communication will have to be
addressed and their power harnessed to spread and empower our message.
My speaking career may end up online with NO travel to meetings and conferences and my writing may
also end up entirely online through the transition the publishing industry is facing today. MY seminars
and consulting business may become virtual as well.
I am changing my thinking each day as I evaluate what I will look like and how I will conduct business
going forward. I urge you to do the same since the customers we served yesterday may not be there in our
future. That is a substantial change that COULD influence our success and growth greatly.
2. “CREATE YOUR MESSAGE”
Make your reappearance in the world prepared to clearly identify WHO you are, WHAT you do and WHY
you do it. In my consulting career, I coached clients on the art of “client-centered marketing” (developing
targeted clients using need-centered, client-centered processes that yielded referrals and repeat business).
This process defined the business in such a way that you KNEW who you were and clearly understood
the services you provided to improve the quality of a client’s life.
The point of my program was to identify your mission in such a way that you “captured” the imagination
of the prospect so they would decide to use your services while enabling you to build your reputation of
excellence through them.
Enabling you to establish your reputation of excellence (over time) would give you the opportunity to
not only create a genuine referral source (the best kind) but perhaps also help you build a “network of
influence” that could also help you expand your business through “internally” generated leads.
I see this process being “re-invented” in the new world of technological advances not by personal interaction
but “online” interaction. My client-centered approach to serving and developing client relationships is
something worth exploring because so many businesses are failing to determine their strengths and what
makes them unique in the marketplace of possibilities.
3. “BE AUTHENTIC TO THOSE YOU SERVE”
Understand something clearly: NO ONE wants to “be sold”. I believe in creating relationships first, so
that is how I intend to work in the “virtual age” as well. Referrals don’t “just happen” – they have to be
EARNED before you ask someone IF they can help you build your client base. My FIRST simple rule
always focused on serving FIRST and thanking the client last. Then I would open the door to see if there
was further need for my services or if they could “help me help someone new”.
I never forgot to appreciate my clients and “being there” for them was my pleasure. How we go about
creating this type of relationship online remains an open question at this point in my thinking. I BELIEVE
in relationships as the key to success. However we work out this issue is something ALL businesses will
have to confront going forward.
Here is my final point. It was shared a long time ago in my first National Speakers Assn meeting in the
summer of 1985. It went like this: “Nobody cares how much you KNOW, until they know how much
you CARE.” This principle is true in the fitness industry just as much as it is in any business in America.
How will you approach this issue in your future business life and what will you DO to maintain - and
develop - these valuable assets in the years ahead? I am working on this challenge right now while
preparing for what is to come!
The end times are nigh upon man, and they stand their final trials towards judgment deeming them worthy
or not of redemption. In God, The Here, And The Hereafter: The Way To Heaven, author Norman B. Talsoe walks us
through the final acts of the rapture, including the necessary actions one must undergo to be bound for heaven.
The book discusses the dangers of the Antichrist in the present day blending in among common folk and
leading us to temptation.
Norman B. Talsoe had visions in his senior years at the age of 80, and he believes that the return of Christ is
upon us in the future. In his youth, the author had written several publications related to the field of engineering,
but his visions in his older years prompted him to write God, The Here, And The Hereafter: The Way To Heaven to share
his faith. The author recalls his vivid memory of God instructing him to author this work and further evangelize
the population coming to fruition eleven years after his vision.
Within 11 years of reading and interpreting the sacred texts of the Bible, Norman B. Talsoe understood the
seven years of Armageddon with angelic horns blowing to signify the end of times. Half of these years will start
with the wrath of Jesus Christ and the latter years with God’s. During this time of Armageddon, no human is
exempted—all will face the inevitable judgment in the eyes of the divine.
God, The Here, And The Hereafter: The Way To Heaven is Norman B. Talsoe’s guide for one’s preparation for the
time of judgment.
Written to help both believers and
non-believers, this spiritual read
serves up an interesting portion
of food for the mind, spiritual
body, and soul.
PAULA
POLCINI
My interest in understanding man, cultural development, and
finding the purpose of life began in 1963 with a desire to heal my
husband. My wish for him to be well was so great that I started
investigating alternative healthcare. I volunteered my services to
care for sick people for years so I could learn more. I met people
who were ill and also young children who accessed knowledge
beyond their five senses. I had so many unusual experiences and
deeper questions that I began to study the role of the mind in
personality, energy, the unseen, the laws of the universe, and the
science of man in the cosmos. It was not long before my five senses
could no longer contain what was unfolding in my consciousness.
More and more happened that introduced me to the unseen
propelling force of invisible intelligence.
I realized I had taken on a very serious subject and
that it was too late to turn back. I made a commitment
to not just believe in God but to know God and find
the cause of human suffering. There is new straight
knowledge that can define God as a scientific fact.
The building of the house that has everything
anyone would ever want is to grow in wisdom and
understanding to know with full consciousness
that man is an immortal part of God.
THOUGHTS FOR A
POSITIVE LIFE
by Rev. Dr. Larry A. Brown
Newlyweds Coop and Becky look forward to family life
together on the farm. The wedding was beautiful, and the
honeymoon was divine. But the hard work begins, and it’s
not all smooth sailing. When Becky’s daughter Jenny rocks
the boat, family relationships must be ironed out. Other
storms threaten their new lives together. A tornado, medical
emergencies, depression, and the return of a troubled woman
from Coop’s past all cause disruption to their home. Can the
young Smith family survive the upheaval caused by these
disasters? How can this all be part of God’s plan for them?
Will they abide safely under His wings?
As we go along our journey of life, we will often become
faced with situations and people that will require a comment
or action from us in order to move the situation along. Our
resultant comments and behavior will make the situation end
as a positive one or one that results in stress or negativism.
We maintain that if we love and respect the life potential
in others, we should strive to make people successful and feel
good about themselves and others. This book is a collection
of thoughts and actions to consider when confronted with
challenging opportunities and may give the reader the thought
needed to make the conclusion a positive one.
KEEPING IN TOUCH
Stories
by Pauline DiBenedetto
There is no doubt that membership in the Christian
Church has decreased recently to a minority of the population
in Europe and is approaching that in the United States, yet
in both areas, a majority of the population still claims to be
The book is about the similarity between a natural diamond
and a born-again believer. God has provided eight steps to
form your life like a brilliant cut. Are you able to go through
the necessary steps in order to become a fiery diamond? A
brilliant-cut diamond has fifty-eight facets, so the book is
technical but also spiritual.
Linda McClung, in her second book, My Sister My Twin,
tells the story in a contemporary novel that weaves truth
confusing world. Alex and Kate are twins who have competed
Peace In My Soul
by Deanna Hurtubise
Was there ever a time when you felt really strange,
When you wanted to run and you needed a change?
When the spirit within you seemed restless and wild,
Impatient to make you react like a child?
Was there ever a time when you wanted to scream
For somewhere on the way you’d lost sight of your dream?
When the problems piled up or grief got you down
And it seemed so much harder to smile than to frown?
Have you needed some peace in your soul?
When times can be hard, when money is tight,
When I worry and fret, “Will an end be in sight?”
I pray for the strength to look back and see
What lessons I learned from the hand dealt to me.
When I bury my pride by making amends,
One day at a time with support from new friends,
When I hold my first coin, a symbol of hope
And pray to stay strong, to focus, to cope,
I’m searching for peace in my soul.
When I look all around at a world wearing masks,
When I yearn for a hug, but do as they ask
And stay far apart; it’s the right thing to do,
And pray the dark skies will once more be blue.
When I try and I fail and I think, “What’s the use?”
When I look in the mirror and need an excuse,
Can I pick myself up and start once again?
I can if I truly believe You’re my friend.
I yearn for peace in my soul.
I’m afraid to admit when I’m feeling this way,
Sometimes I’m afraid I’ll forget how to pray,
I have to hang on, believing You’re there,
And know that You hear the clumsiest prayer.
Lord, please be the peace in my soul.
A Rainy Day in
Sunny Arizona

It was a grey, cold, rainy morning—a rare day in
sunny Sun City West, Arizona—when we arrived
a few minutes late for an 8 a.m. doctor’s appointment.
Only a 10-minute drive from our house, the clinic was
difficult to find even though we had been there before.
Virtually hidden across the street from Banner Del
Webb Hospital, the facility looked like a maintenance
storage unit with no entrance visible from the parking lot.
Having located it previously, I pulled up to get Mary
Beth, my wife, as close as possible, but while holding
an umbrella in one hand and gripping her walker with
the other, she still had to slosh through a couple of
puddles before disappearing.
Guess she made it okay. Now it’s my turn.
I found an empty space several rows away from the
designated handicap stalls, parked, grabbed my umbrella
and walker and, at age 93, carefully followed MB inside
as the rain continued to flood the area.
A hand-written sign posted on a stucco wall a few
steps around a corner was the same one we had seen
before. It said AZ ENT (Arizona Ear Nose Throat)
with an unnecessary arrow pointing to the glass-door
entrance a foot away.
Following a recent head-first dive on a large frontdoor
carpet while hurrying to a bathroom, Mary Beth
was there to have her broken nose re-examined by
the surgeon.
58 | The Reading Glass Magazine

The waiting room was crowded. My wife had checked in and found seats together away from a wall where a
young woman was sitting alone, near enough to overhear our chit-chat.
“You didn’t bring your book,” Mary Beth said.
“I don’t have a third hand,” I should have replied. Instead, I played it straight. “I didn’t want to risk dropping it.”
I was deep into a James Patterson novel and sorry I had left it in the car. It seemed there might be a long wait
to be called.
“I’ll get it,” a loud voice volunteered.
I turned to see a woman seated against the wall, still bundled in a heavy rain-splattered jacket. I would have
guessed her to be in the mid-40’s or so, no walker, no crutches.
I almost laughed, a good laugh, of course.
“Oh no, but thanks so much,” I said. “It probably won’t be long,” I lied.
“It could be an hour,” she said while rising and offering me her car keys.
“Here, so you won’t think I’m taking your car.”
I grinned and waved her off.
“Where’s yours parked?”
I looked at MB, smiled, lifted my eyebrows, shrugged my shoulders, handed Tina my keys and described the car.
“Okay, if you don’t mind getting drenched. It’s really coming down.”
“Be right back,” and she was gone.
She must have run. In a matter of a couple of minutes, she was back with Patterson’s novel and soon I was
mid-way into a four-page chapter.
“Mary Beth… Mary Beth Hawn,” a doctor’s assistant bellowed, chart in hand, door wide open.
As we rose and grabbed our walkers, we waved at Tina and exchanged a “wouldn’t-you-know-it” expression.
We never saw her again.
Only in Sun City West, Arizona…
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
“The Road Not Taken”
by Robert Frost

POETRY
Each morning the rooster boldly awaits the first ray of light, signaling the dawn of a new
day. What can this fragile bird teach us, upon awakening? Why do we brace ourselves with the
biggest mug of the strongest of brews, hoping it will carry us through our daily tasks? Why can’t
we, like the rooster, embrace our personal mission?
Ellen Beth Berman is a woman who views life on a positive note. She values what life brings,
sees grace even in the face of adversity, and appreciates life’s riches in the love of family and friends.
Inspired by her personal experiences, Berman has authored an award-winning book called Th e
Voice of the Rooster and the Lessons It Teaches. In this seemingly simple poetry, she weaves profound
wisdom, inspiring her readers to look inwardly into the soul.
Berman’s principle is often overlooked. By diving into the depths of our being, we get a better
understanding of the world around us. We start to see G-dlyness in the beauty of nature and
within the special people who enter our lives
The pointed and succinct way the
author conveyed each message
into the poems she wrote, from
the concept ot unconditional love
in the poem AWAITING YOU, to
the way rage can overcome us
and become “god” in that moment
of time in her poem ANGER,
made this book really inviting and
POETRY
MORE ON LIFE
by Richard G. Wanderman, M.D.
ABSTRACTION, A
LETTER TO EMILY
AND EVENSONG
by P. Joanne Marchant
Be in the present. Come pass the day with me. Sit and
absorb the beauty surrounding you. Let your emotions
be engulfed by the latent energy of life, begging to be
acknowledged by your smile. Meld with the breezes as they
caress your skin and the fragrances as they soothe your soul.
Unleash the sublimated emotions yearning to be felt and
live—live the life as it was meant to be.
STRAIGHT FROM
THE HEART OF
A NORTHERN
ALBERTAN:
A Book of Poetry
by Heather Dale Killeen
Poetry inspired by the poet Emily Dickinson (one of
America’s greatest and most original poets of all time).
POETRY FOR
THE SPIRIT
by Shereema Dumas
A collection of poetry that touches upon life’s many
journeys. It is a collective work to inspire, move, and challenge
one to think and feel deeply. Readers could find themselves
experiencing the journey.
The poems are all life stories, but an effort has been
made to give an opposite viewpoint: how animals might
think about their lives; how inanimate objects might view
the world. Poems have been included that look at past and
current situations and problems occurring in the world,
both in a serious and humorous vein. Also, many poems are
centered on the interactions between people, nature, and the
heartbreak of loss in love or death.
POETRY
LOST STREAMS
by Th G Koot
It’s a bundle of poems (book). It’s one theme.
by Alvina Y. Platt-Gregory
LISTEN WITH YOUR HEART
“Her poetry is not meant to be introspective, this is loud
poetry, meant to be studied and shared. Any reader will find
Platt-Gregory’s work easy to follow and understand, and inspiring
in its message of faith and trust in Jesus.”
I worked as a male nurse for 33 years, and now that I
am retired, I find joy in writing poetry. I have published 8
books of poems in the Netherlands. I got married in 1975
to my lovely wife and we now have 3 grown children and 5
grandkids. One of my books is called “Poem for our (grand)
children.” The painting on the cover photo represents my 3
children. I dedicate this book to my unborn child who never
had the chance to grow up and enjoy life. Enjoy reading the
MARILYN’S HEART:
My Life on Poetry
by Marilyn Bodi Reed
Wife, mother, and now an author, Marilyn Bodi Reed
writes a pensive collection of poetry to reflect on life, death,
and the ever-constant changes of all things in between. In
what should have been the golden years of their marriage,
the author spent days and nights taking care of her husband
following the debilitating diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease.
Dedicating most of her life to caring for her family, poetry
has been the author’s outlet, allowing her to share her stories
of childhood, recovery, love, and loss—evident as she ponders
in her poems in Marilyn’s Heart: My Life on Poetry.
HEALTHY AGING
OF THE
HE AGE
IN TCOVID-19
PANDEMIC
RISK factors. I am 76 now so that is a risk
factor I have to be aware of at all times. The other
considerations are your current health issues
such as breathing issues, weight, current health
challenges and other relevant information. They
will determine the choices you make.
TESTING and VACCINATION status: Ensure
you are boosted and vaccinated because the virus
is continuing to mutate and seems to be ahead of
“the curve”. Apparently the pandemic will never
really be over as it is a VERY adaptable adversary.
DEAL WITH YOUR FEAR: Be prudent
when making your choices and allow the fear to
“pass through you”. Everyday affirm your control
over your choices and make them with BOTH
your heart and mind. Each brings power to your
life and together they are powerful!
My purpose in writing Healthy Aging &
You was to explore the principles of the
aging process as I understood them and provide a
vehicle through which people could explore their
own journey and make choices that empowered
them to live the most fulfilling that they could
imagine. The one factor that did not cross my mind
at the time was the potential for a devastating
and dangerous viral outbreak leading to millions
of deaths worldwide.
In light of this new reality, I thought it would
be useful to share some of my thoughts on what I
believe are some critical steps we can each take in
order to be safe - and still thrive - in an uncertain
world where nothing is guaranteed. Here are my
5 recommendations that will hopefully help you
navigate this new world reality – and still achieve
your dream.
BE PROACTIVE: Don’t wait to REACT to
circumstances when they occur – RESPOND to
the messages and you are getting both emotionally
and psychologically. ANTICIPATE your day
and its potential challenges. PREPARATION
is worth the effort!
BE MINDFUL: You are doing all that you can
to be a participant in your own health outcome.
Don’t live in regret, guilt or resentment – they will
only make you miserable – and you don’t need that
kind of company! (P.S. “Take a walk, eat a salad
and drink water!”)
I hope these thoughts will help you as you
navigate your life in these complicated and
challenging times. They are a part of my daily
commitment to myself. I hope they will be yours
as well – and help you too!
MYSTERY, THRILLER & SUSPENSE
YOU CAN RUN...
BUT YOU CAN’T HIDE
by Linda Freeny
BUS #89
by Douglas Strait
“All the elements of an archetypal mystery come into
play in Linda Freeny’s novel, You Can Run…But You Can’t
Hide, yet there’s enough variations on the classic gumshoe
theme to elevate this book and make it both a fun read and
potent page-turner.”
— Jake Bishop, Pacific Book Review
A group of daily bus passengers is terrorized by a psychotic
young man riding among them. When law enforcement
arrests him, he disappears and returns five years later, looking
and talking differently. The first bus passenger who figures
out who recognizes him is a blind man’s pilot dog. The real
terror begins.
TRANSITION KEEPER:
Monologies of the New
Babylon
by Ali Blank
MAYHEM IN 1982:
The Vengeance of the
Bastard
by B. D. Renard and
John F. Nolan
In the General’s Secret Room in London is the New Babylon
Artificial Intelligence (AI). It balances vital forces in today’s wars,
catastrophes, and dangers. Its upgrade takes one week, during
which time the “transition” hands over all its rights and power to a
woman, TRANSITION KEEPER. A program tries to eliminate
TRANSITION KEEPER, and she realizes the importance
of the mission: to protect and save the world from threats in
a non-violent way, which is beyond the comprehension of the
New Babylon. But can a woman save the world from terrorist
attack before the transition is complete, and can she save herself?
Mayhem in 1982 is rooted in the true story of Long
Island’s most infamous crime spree. Their credo—if you
want something, just take it—was demonstrated by the
night’s work of random shootings, rapes, sodomies, pistol
whippings, robberies, and terrorism by forcing diner patrons
to “undress and have sex with the person next to you.” True
crime merges with fiction… As news of the Boys’ release
circulates thirty years later, in 2012, a product of one of the
rapes discovers the truth of his conception and vows to
avenge his mother’s degradation.
THE GATEWAY
by Cynthia Delafield
The Gateway tells the story of a beautiful but mysterious
house in the mountains. It is infested with demons, which
got in when the original owner committed suicide by
diving from the stair landing and smashing his head on
the floor, thus opening a gateway to a nether region of evil.
The Hawthorne family, who buy the house from the estate,
have to learn to live with the demons without breaking any
of their rules for fear of death or worse.
Nell, the youngest child, learns at an early age about
the actual gateway. However, the little statue of Pan in her
mother’s garden, who may or may not be in league with the
demons, seems to protect her from their worse depredations.
Nell grows up and marries Rick, an engineer with an oil
company. They move into the Barn, an old carriage house
down the hill from the gateway. Eventually, over Rick’s
horrified objections, they have to move into the gateway.
Because of difficult circumstances after Rick’s death, Nell
has to sell the house she loves so much. The demons wreak
their rage and retribution on the hateful man who buys it.
LIVING THROUGH THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC:
KEYS TO FINDING
YOUR PATH FORWARD
by Nicholas S. Prukop
INTRODUCTION
The recommendations are simple: Wash your hands, maintain
proper social distancing, wear a mask, and don’t attend large
gatherings. Why has this been so hard for so many people to do?
What is in our future since we are faced with so many unanswered
questions? How can we gather the strength to survive the crisis
of our lifetime?
These and so many other questions have been on my mind over the
past year. I believe in the power of choice and living in the present.
These two points of reference guide my activity each day and I will
share the 5 keys with you that could make a significant difference
in your life and yield a rich and rewarding path forward when we
finally “get to the other side” of this terrible worldwide tragedy.
THE 5 KEYS
1. MENTAL CLARITY: This key gives us the power to review
and “listen” to our thoughts – the place where our reality begins to
take shape. I am grateful for my life because I nearly died in 2019
after being hit by a truck (8 fractured ribs) when I was riding my
bike. My conditioning and my training as a fitness professional
helped me survive the initial incident and also the 2nd emergency
(2 months later) that led to the blood clots that nearly killed me.
2020 represented a “foundational” training year for me and included
challenging hill cycling (I didn’t quit) and complementary weight
training. As I entered 2020, strengthening my heart, legs and
overall strength became my focus. I am close to being back to
where I was before the truck hit me and now I enter 2021 with
a new plan: To build an “athlete’s” mindset!
KEY: Set your intention and direction, establishing your priorities.
For me, it strengthened my heart and legs so I could resume my
beloved running program of more than 50 years. This year I will
build on what I started last year and find my way from there.
2. FAITH: Setting your intention helps you in charting your
course and finding your path forward (the subject of my 3rd book
not yet published). It is in establishing purpose that we “find
ourselves”. I am working on becoming the “example of the change
I wish to see in the world” since my path is becoming a passionate
advocate for the principles of healthy aging as discussed in my
first book “Healthy Aging & You: Your Journey to Becoming
Happy, Healthy & Fit”.
KEY: Focus on your intention and “tune out” the noise of the day.
Get close to your passion by focusing your attention on what you
WANT in your life and “let the rest go”! Faith in yourself is most
important (my conclusion in my yet unpublished 3rd manuscript).
It is critical to spend time each day contemplating this thought!
3. COMMITMENT: This principle applies to all of life. Those of
us who commit to “a greater good” have the best chance for growth,
expansion - and eventually success. I am committed to sharing my
message with the world so I am joining with my daughter who
has an excellent background in PR and media relations to help
me connect with journalists and media outlets in print, TV, and
radio. We are committed to “making a difference” in the world so
my training, writing, and passion will eventually “get me there”.
(I am now 74 so I have no time to waste!)
KEY: Become passionate about your life and finding your “true”
message. Define it clearly and develop your plan for achieving
your own dream. Dreams are what fueled Walt Disney’s success,
so if it was good enough for Walt, it is definitely good enough for
me. How about YOU?
4. TRAINING: Training represents my foundation and it
encompasses “all of me” – mind, body and spirit. I say spirit in
reference to our belief systems and what they represent to us.
For me, my belief is in my “greatness” – meaning, I have value
and will be able to share that value with others. I encourage you
to define your training program and work on it each day. Mine
includes cardiovascular conditioning, weight training, meditation
and prayer work and daily affirmations I repeat throughout the
day, reinforcing my commitment to my purpose.
KEY: Discipline and purpose work hand in hand. Living in the
present and making your choices in the only moment that matters
(the present) is a very important concept. Practice it daily and you
will find yourself not getting distracted with the unimportant
details in life that can literally “derail” our success.
5. PROGRAMMING: This final key is important because our
minds control our lives and destiny. The subconscious mind is
where the “tapes” are stored that influence every aspect of our lives
– including our attitudes and behavior. Be careful in programming
your mind since what you say, feel, express and do will alter
your course if you are not careful. This is where affirmations and
visualization – and your imagination – come in.
Be aware of how you express yourself and gather to you all the
goodwill you can because we need each other. One of my favorite
teachers shared a belief I now hold as well: “Everything we desire
in life comes through relationship”. A corollary belief I hold is
“the mind of man is unlimited in its potential and responds to the
demands placed upon it”. Place the BEST demands on yourself
every day and see what happens!
KEY: Programming your mind is an activity that is priceless. Do it
with love and passion and your old negative patterns will no longer
restrain you from achieving what you envision for yourself. People
will want to be with you because of “who you are”!
the Lighthouse
by Pamela McGee Wilkinson
When you have the inclination
to take a Sunday stroll
To break up your daily routine
and attempt to feed your soul.
A lighthouse fills a special need
It warns the ships at night
That rocky shores are in your course
So steer the ship aright.
I am glad my soul sent me to this beach
This lighthouse has been a blessing
I’ve learned that just loving others
Is life’s greatest lesson.
You grab your coat and your walking boots
Don’t leave the house without those
And check the weather and the wind report
To choose the proper clothes.
I think the lighthouse is speaking to me
He’s telling me what to do
He’s warning me that things are amiss
And he’s saying “It’s up to you.”
A lighthouse fills a special need
It warns the ships at night
That rocky shores are in your course
So steer the ship aright.
You grab the keys from your favorite purse
To lock the door behind you
and hope that whatever you are looking for
will have the vision to find you.
Once the door is closed and locked
And you’ve turned to face the path
You know you have a choice to make
And there’s a question to ask.
“Whatever choices you must make
This day this week this year
Will steer your ship toward the kinder fates
And your path will become very clear.”
“You’ll find the peace that’s in your heart
Will depend on the love from others
And the people that you lovingly serve
Will become your sisters and brothers.”
November 24, 2021
Do I turn left to walk on the beach
Will I find my answers there
Or do I turn right to wander the hills
How will the two compare.
The wind is coming from the north
And she has always shown me grace
The way she gently rustles my skirt
And travels past my face.
After all…this is a special day
And I don’t want the wind behind me
So I’ll choose the northern direction
And see if the fates will find me.
I don’t know where fate and time will take us. A year, a
month, or a day from now, who knows, we might be going
our separate ways. There are a lot of things I want to tell you
about, but I haven’t. Things I thought you would want to
hear but refused to say so because it is not necessary because
it’s trivial.
When I write someone a letter, it means that person is very
special, whose life has graced my own and saved me in ways
I wished to be saved; saved me in ways I didn’t know was the
kind of saving I needed until you did.
I hope you’ll never forget that there’s a piece of me that shall
fight with you in all the bloody, messy fights, especially in your
silent battles.
Keep on because I know you’re gonna make it. Stay unbent
I Came, I Sow, I'll Conquer
In reference and continuation to A Little Bit of Sun and a Whole Lot of Freedom, p.68
The Reading Glass Magazine Third Issue A Toast to Timeless Summer Stories
“Oh, this is quite heavy. It’s been a while since the last
time you dropped by. Things are looking a little hectic
for you, aren’t they?”
It’s already a different season. And guess what? I’ve
already made friends with the laundress. Everytime I
drop my clothes, we always find time to have a quick chat.
Like how she shared that her kid wants to study in the
same University as I am or how their washing machine
got broken last time.
If you’ve ever come across the previous issue of this
magazine—A Toast to Timeless Summer Stories—you’ll
know who I’m talking about.
Seven months in and every corner of this neighborhood
brings comfort and familiarity—including the crooked
road, maze-like alleys, dogs’ nasty bit of business and
motorcycles racing to pass between the narrow alleyway.
These are daily occurrences I can now swiftly pass across
even with blindfolds. The once questioning look has now
been upgraded into I-know-you-but-I-don’t-know-yourname
kind of smiles, to nods and eventually to casual
greetings. One time I saw a merchant play tug-of-war
over a fish with a cat. The lady lost the game, met my
eyes and noticed I witnessed the whole crime scene.
After realizing what just happened, we both ended up
laughing at each other. Ever since that day, the lady has
been my consistent smile trader, raising the edge of their
mouth every chance our eyes meet. The only people
who despise me and my roommate’s existence are our
co-tenant staying directly under our room. We call them
“The Shushing Neighbors’’. Apparently, they can hear our
laughter, gossip and music jam sessions. I can no longer
keep up with the number of times they shushed us. The
“Please lower down your voices” escalated into “YOU’RE
NOT THE ONLY PEOPLE LIVING HERE.” Every
shush felt like a year less in my lifespan. I just hope the
veins on their neck never pop. Yet, these mundane things
make this place a home, no matter how ridiculous they
can be—SHHHH!
82 | The Reading Glass Magazine
A home. Room number 7. This white little room that
has been symbolic of my freedom. To the summer when
I yearned for growth. To the summer that has passed, but
is yet to come. To the summer when I sowed. No seed
was scattered—but I sowed. To this barren room, I have
planted my aspirations. I watered with silent cries and
tended with sighs. I screamed voiceless manifestations to
the universe in hopes that these dreams would flourish
and take life. May these four corners be enough shade
for its comfort. May this white little room witness it
prosper. Reap. They say we reap what we sow—such an
easy thing to utter but could never equate to the lengths
I’ve stretched myself to even put a step forward. I do
more than just sow. I force myself to wake up on days
my body refuses to do so. I bite my lips when I lose
control. Having to hold back tears in the middle of the
class after getting overwhelmed or unconsciously falling
asleep. Getting sick. Being late. Drowning on jealousy.
Gaining weight. Losing passion. Missing my friends and
the fear of being left out. In moments I am questioning
myself if this is where I will ever be. In trying not to be
a disappointment. If I’ll ever get my degree. “What if I
needed a break?”, “This may not be for me?”, “How did it
come to this?” I suck it up and eat my misery. I do more
than just sow. I will do more than just sow.
I have said everything to cheer myself up but reality
is a friend you sleep beside at night. I still can’t see the
light beyond this tunnel. No silver linings on clouds.
Never-ending winters. Storms are still holding the
rainbows hostage. I see no hope but it lingers—it waits,
it creeps. To hope is also to be patient. To dream is to
be practical. To sow is to suffer. To conquer is to endure.
Thus, we can only reap once we have sacrificed. While
countries and trees have their seasons, it means mine
also has its own. My spring will come. My spring will
come! I’ll make it come.
“I guess things for me will definitely continue to
be a little hectic for a while,” I replied as I took my
laundry bag back.
Seasons
of a Sister
by Samantha
From New Year’s nostalgia
To the fleeting February
Oh, all the blues and melancholy
I’ve started 2023
Kinda sad
Kinda mad
Of all the things I’m not
Of all the things I want
Ironic how I’ve been wandering
Musing, wondering
Roaming when I’m actually rotting
Stuck, staring up at the ceiling
Life of the party
Excited for Monday
I’m that girl
Gosh, I was that girl
But now, here you go
Nothing to wake up to
No one to go home to
Nothing, no one, just you
How can I have a clean slate
Is it okay to start late
This debate in my head
Can I ever be saved
“Nah, it’s just an episode.”
But it’s been 49 episodes!
—already?
Sorry, it must be really heavy
A season
Like from your favorite series
Bashed for all the anomalies
Not bad, but a beacon
A reason
To listen to the voices
Comprehend the vices
Why, so to ease the tension
Only in knowing
Can you stop crying
Only in understanding
Can you stop resenting
Only in accepting
Can you believe your truth
And only in allowing
Can you let the sun seep through
Sister, seasons are not forever
Two months’ time—you're sad and mad
But this March, you can also try to march
As you strive to spring back to life
Little New Buds
Life!
Bringing Forth
of Hope

"What elevates this book is the skillfulness with which Insley
brings to the surface multiple layers of social issues prevalent
at the time. She describes her experiences with authenticity
and honesty, not shying away from difficult or divisive issues.
Rather, she weaves them into the narrative, making them part of
the landscape she had to navigate… The author has tremendous
writing skills, which make the often-complex subjects of the
book accessible to a wide audience. It is fast-paced yet vividly
descriptive. Her voice is educated and sophisticated without
sounding condescending. Pictures are strategically placed, making
her story come to life."
— Gretchen Hansen, The US Review of Books
One can seamlessly plan life ahead, but somewhere
down the line, the trajectory of one’s life may change—
intentionally, casually, unexpectedly even. While others
may track a single, familiar trail, some take detours they
would not have imagined in their lifetime. Loudell
Insley, for one, has trodden different roads, including
the one less traveled.
A Maryland native, Insley completed a degree in
elementary education from the University of Maryland.
But this had her asserting, “I don’t want to see the
inside of a classroom again.” Over her objections, her
father insisted she attend Katharine Gibbs Secretarial
School in New York City—which changed Insley’s
life’s trajectory for good.
After Gibbs, Insley was hired by Senator Edward
Kennedy in 1965, and from there, she led a life exposed
to the world of politics. Insley witnessed firsthand
how Ted grew into The Lion of the Senate, became
the Senator’s Assistant Press Secretary, and was
there before, during, and after the Chappaquiddick
accident. She was loaned to Senator Robert Kennedy’s
presidential campaign, traveled with the candidate on
his ill-fated 1968 western campaign, and was with
him at the Ambassador Hotel when he was shot.
She worked on his funeral, traveled to D.C. on the
funeral train, returned to Ted’s office, and was there
for funerals, births, and marriages. Insley moved on
86 | The Reading Glass Magazine
to a position in the press office of the Peace Corps
and later worked for the Democratic Convention
Committee in 1972 during the Watergate break-in.
Insley was intimately in the center of things as history
unfolded for America in the 60s and 70s. She eventually
returned to her hometown and worked for the Perdue
poultry company. In 1976, Insley began a successful
46-year career in real estate.
Insley was able to take completely different paths
in her lifetime on top of being a single woman in a
changing society. Little did she know that one ample
opportunity would open to even more extensive, lifechanging
events. She muses about taking a path she
would never have trodden—the road less traveled—and
how that shaped her life. She put her stories of life
adventures in writing for her family, and the warm
welcome by friends and strangers led Insley to publish
her memoir entitled Life on a Road Less Traveled: Or,
Memoirs from Behind the Scenes of History.
Hollywood Book Reviews writes, “Life on a Road
Less Traveled is a dramedy rife with incident, character
and reflection… It is a memoir; it is history; it is
almost autofiction.” A writing jewel that shares Insley’s
rollercoaster ride of life—her self-discovery, grit, and
heartbreak, Life on a Road Less Traveled is an inspiring
memoir you don’t want to miss.
