JENNIFERBARNES,DirectorTHE JAZZ SINGERSJAZZ SINGERSThe University of North Texas Jazz Singers is thepremier vocal jazz ensemble within the Division of JazzStudies in the College of Music. Under the direction ofJennifer Barnes, Jazz Singers consists of ten vocalistsand a rhythm section, who perform a challenging andvaried repertoire of jazz and jazz-influenced music,emphasizing close vocal harmonies, cutting-edgerepertoire and improvisation. The ensemble was theGraduate College Vocal Jazz Choir Winner in the 2020,2019 and 2016 DownBeat Student Music Awards andreceived Outstanding Performance in 2021, 2017,2015, 2013 & 2012. Jazz Singers has performed atstate, national and international music conferencesand festivals, including those for the Jazz EducationNetwork, International Association for Jazz Education,the American Choral Directors Association and the TexasMusic Educators Association.The UNT Vocal Jazz area has been a thriving part ofthe Jazz Division within the College of Music for over35 years. It is comprised of 23 students pursuingBachelor’s, Masters, and Doctoral level degrees injazz voice. Serving on the UNT Jazz Voice Facultyare highly acclaimed vocal jazz educators JenniferBarnes and Rosana Eckert, as well as four graduateteaching assistants. Jazz Studies voice majors studyand experience both traditional and modern practicesof solo jazz singing, songwriting, vocal pedagogy,improvisation, jazz aural and keyboard skills, jazz theory,arranging, and jazz history. In addition, they sing in smallcombos, seven lab bands, and other ensembles likethe Latin Jazz Lab Band and Brazilian and Afro-Cubanensembles. Over the years, UNT vocal jazz studentshave received numerous Downbeat Magazine StudentMusic Awards in categories of solo singing, ensembleperformance, arranging, and composition. Alumni of theprogram have gone on to win or receive nominations for8 Jazz Education Network ConferenceGrammy Awards, Independent Music Awards andCASA awards, and are enjoying successful careersas recording artists, studio musicians, collegeprofessors, composers, producers, arrangers,independent artists, and worship leaders.Continuing the trajectory of founding director ParisRutherford, the UNT Vocal Jazz area continues to bea leader in vocal jazz education.ABOUT THE DIRECTORJennifer Barnes is the Director of Vocal Jazzat UNT, in addition to being a highly soughtaftervocalist, educator, clinician and arrangerthroughout the U.S. and Canada. She has directedaward-winning Vocal Jazz Ensembles at eightuniversities, won a “Jazz Education AchievementAward” from DownBeat magazine, has served asa guest conductor for District and All-State MusicFestivals in 17 states, and her vocal arrangementsare published by Sheet Music Plus, Anchor Music,and UNC Jazz Press. In addition to her teachingactivities, Jennifer is an active performing andstudio vocalist, including her roles as alto vocalist,composer and arranger for the professionalvocal ensemble Vertical Voices.
