THE ONE O’CLOCK LAB BAND ®ALANBAYLOCK,DirectorTHE ONE O’CLOCK LAB BAND®is the premier performing ensemble of the jazz studiesprogram. With seven Grammy Award® nominations(one or more per decade and under every directorsince the 70s: Lab ‘75, Lab ‘76, Lab ‘89, Lab ‘91, Lab2009, Lab 2015) from the library of over eighty criticallyacclaimed recordings to date, the One O’Clock LabBand is noted for exceptional individual musicianshipand tight ensemble performance. Concerts feature thewealth of compositions and arrangements from theUNT jazz library written by current and former NorthTexas students, by director Alan Baylock, by Grammynominatedcomposers Neil Slater, Steve Wiest, and RichDeRosa (jazz composition faculty).The One O’Clock Lab Band® has toured internationally,performing in Russia, Mexico, Switzerland, England,France, The Netherlands, Australia, Portugal, Finland,Norway, Canada, Italy, Germany, Japan, Hong Kong,Poland, Ireland and Thailand, where the band performedfor the King of Thailand and His Majesty chose to “sitin” with the band. The band has toured the major jazzfestivals including Monterey, Cork/Guinness, Montreux(first college band to do so), Vienne, North Sea, Spoleto,Pori and Umbria. The One O’Clock Lab Band® hasperformed by Presidential invitation at the White House,joined on stage by Duke Ellington and Stan Getz. Theband frequently appears at major jazz venues such asBirdland in New York City, Blues Alley in Washington,6 Jazz Education Network ConferenceDC, Catalina’s in Los Angeles, California, and asthe headliner at jazz festivals, music conferences,and concerts hosted by numerous fine arts series,colleges and high schools across the United Statesand around the world.ABOUT THE DIRECTORBorn and raised in a small town in SouthwesternPennsylvania, Alan Baylock has composed musicthat is performed throughout the world. Oneof the most respected and sought-after jazzcomposers and educators in the industry today,he is the director of the Grammy-nominatedOne O’Clock Lab Band at the University ofNorth Texas, and previously served 20 years asChief Arranger for the USAF Airmen of Note inWashington, D.C. The Alan Baylock Jazz Orchestrarecorded three critically-acclaimed CDs andperformed throughout the United States for 15years. Baylock graduated from ShenandoahUniversity (BME 1990), where he later becameJazz Composer-in-Residence, and the Universityof North Texas (MM 1994).Baylock travels extensively as guest conductorand clinician, and has been featured with closeto 100 professional, collegiate, high school(All-State and regional) and middle school jazzensembles. He isan active member of the Jazz Education Network.Alan’s music has been performed and/orrecorded by jazz greats Freddie Hubbard, JimmyHeath, Michael Brecker, Maynard Ferguson,Doc Severinsen, Joe Lovano, Paquito D’Rivera,Melissa Aldana, Phil Woods, Arturo Sandoval,David Liebman, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Kenny Werner,Joshua Redman, Stefon Harris, Jerry Bergonzi,Nicholas Payton, Sean Jones, Tierney Sutton,Kurt Elling and many more. His eclectic talentshave also led him to writing music for Roy Clark,Lee Greenwood, Wynonna, Al Jarreau, ChakaKhan, Patti LaBelle, Spyro Gyra, Ronan Tynan,and symphony orchestras throughout the UnitedStates and abroad. His music is published byAlfred Music and ProJazzCharts.com.Baylock lives in Denton, Texas with his wife,cellist Maria Baylock.
