Following hisfather’s footsteps, he began his musical education as aclassical violinist. After hearing albums by Nat King Coleand Glenn Miller, he realized he wanted to play thatmusic and pursued his dream with a passion, takinghis first drum lesson at age 11. He studied at the CubaNational School of Arts and subsequently at Havana’sNational Conservatory, beginning his professionalcareer in 1970.After moving to New York in 1980, Ignacio met and had theprivilege of working with musicians of the stature of MarioBauza, among others. It was Mario who introduced him to the lateBebop master Dizzy Gillespie. In 1981, Dizzy invited Ignacio to join hisquartet. He later would become an integral part of all the important bandsGillespie assembled during that decade, such as “The Dizzy Gillespie’s70th Anniversary Big Band”, “Dizzy Gillespie All Star Big Band” and theGRAMMY Award winning “United Nations Orchestra”.Ignacio has also conducted clinics and master classes acrossthe world and has recorded and played with musiciansof the stature of McCoy Tyner, Freddie Hubbard, WyntonMarsalis, Jackie Mc Lean, Clark Terry, James Moody, MiltJackson, Ron Carter, Michael Brecker, Joe Lovano, JonFaddis, Jack Bruce, Jaco Pastorius, Tito Puente, GonzaloRubalcaba, Lalo Schifrin, Slide Hampton’s Jazz Masters BigBand, Carnegie Hall Big Band, Lincoln Center Orchestra, WDRBig Band and BBC Big Band.
