THE TWO O’CLOCK JAZZ SINGERS LAB BANDROBPARTON,DirectorTWO O’CLOCK LAB BANDis among the premier collegiate big bands inthe United States. It maintains a tradition ofnational and state recognitions, including twentyinvited headline performances at the Wichita JazzFestival, first place at the Longhorn Jazz Festivalin Austin, Texas, invited performances at the TexasMusic Educators Association state convention,the International Association of Jazz EducationConference, Jazz Education Network, and TheMidwest Clinic. With a recording catalog of 20critically acclaimed albums, the band has earnedmultiple DownBeat Student Award recognitionsacross four decades as the Best Graduate LevelJazz Ensemble in addition to innumerable individualstudent recognitions.ABOUT THE DIRECTORRob Parton is Associate Professor of Jazz Trumpetand Chair of the Jazz Studies Division at theUniversity of North Texas where he also directs theTwo O’Clock Lab Band. Prior to joining the facultyat UNT, he held positions at Capital University,Roosevelt University, and Chicago State University.A dedicated jazz educator, he has directed All-StateJazz Ensembles in twelve states as well as servingas a clinician at universities and high schoolsthroughout the United States.A versatile and in-demand trumpet player, Partonhas been called on to perform or record the musicPHOTO BYMATT HELLMANof diverse composers from Karel Husa toLeonard Bernstein to Duke Ellington. He hasperformed with many of America’s majororchestras including the Chicago SymphonyOrchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, New YorkPhilharmonic, and Detroit Symphony Orchestra,to name a few. He has also performed as leadtrumpet on numerous Broadway shows in theMidwest and with Grammy, Tony, and AcademyAward-winning artists from Faith Hill to NatalieCole to Tony Bennett. As a recording artist, hehas performed on hundreds of recordings fornational commercials and with various artistson Concord, Verity, Mark Records, Sea Breezeand Sony record labels.While comfortable in various musicalsettings, be it jazz trio or brass quintet oras a soloist with larger ensembles, leadinga professional big band is the area in whichhe has enjoyed the most acclaim. Foundedin 1984, the Rob Parton Big Band hasreleased eleven recordings, received threepreliminary Grammy nominations, performedat the Midwest Clinic three times, at theInternational Trumpet Guild Conference, andat numerous jazz festivals featuring guestartists such as Lew Soloff, Conte Candoli,and Joe Williams.
