Community News Update Message from Mayor Lake International Women’s Day Awards & Events Council celebrated International Women’s Day with a series of activities and community events last week which I attended, including the Tamil Valarchi Manram and SydWest Multicultural Services International Women’s Day Conference, the Rotary Club of Granville celebrations and the SEVA International Women’s Day event. Six women were recognised for their hard work and achievements at Council’s International Women’s Day Cumberland Awards Ceremony which was held for the first time this year to recognise and acknowledge the contributions of women in our local community. The award winners were: Shaqaeq Rezai who won the Young Female Ambassador Award, Michelle Pearce who was awarded the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Achievement Award, Janu Dhayanathan who took home the Access and Disability Award, Aynalem Tessema who won the Community Event Award, Pilar Lopez who won the Multicultural Leadership Award and Isabel Lorenzi who won the Local Business Woman of the Year Award. Congratulations to the award winners. I look forward to seeing your ongoing work in our community. Emu Update Two juvenile emus who were being cared for at the Central Gardens Nature Reserve in Merrylands have been released into the wildlife park. Nowruz means ‘New Day’ and marks the first day of spring. It has been celebrated for more than 3,000 years by cultures around the world with significance to countries in the Middle East, parts of Asia and Southeast Europe. The evening will mark cultural traditions with a haft-sin table arrangement featuring the seven symbolic items. There will also be live entertainment and performances from dancers, singers and Turkish drummers as well as a range of food vendors, stall holders and art and cultural activities. Congratulations to them all! Kamban Tamil Literary Festival I recently attended the 17th Anniversary of Kamban Kazhagam Australia’s Kamban Tamil Literary Festival. The evening included readings from Tamil literature, performances from musicians, prayers and the sharing of moral teachings. It was such an honour to be invited to this event as the Tamil community came together to celebrate literacy, enrich their community and preserve their culture. LOCAL NEWS Premier’s election pledge $5 million boost for local Maronite community if Liberals win State Election ELLIE BUSBY As the NSW Liberal Party continues to fight to keep Parramatta blue ahead of the State Election, NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet has made another visit to the seat to pledge an investment in the local Maronite community. If re-elected, the NSW Government has promised $5 million to assist the growing Maronite community in Parramatta. The funding would go towards supporting the continued refurbishment and upgrade of the Our Lady of Lebanon Co-Cathedral precinct in Harris Park. The Maronite College is also set to receive an additional $100,000 for the installation of solar panels, to help reduce the school’s energy bills and make it more environmentally sustainable. Perrottet visited Our Lady of Lebanon Co-Cathedral in Harris Park to make the announcement, before he dropped by the Maronite College of the Holy Family, where students waving the Australian flag gave the NSW Premier a very warm welcome. NSW Liberal Candidate for Parramatta Katie Mullens called the funding a “big win” for the local Maronite community. “Only the Perrottet Liberal Government has a plan and vision to help support our growing communities,” Mullens said. “Our strong economic management allows us to invest in community facilities and services for our community, with the experience and leadership needed to make sure they are delivered. “The Maronites have played a huge part in Parramatta’s history and development. This investment will help realise our vision for this important community precinct.” Bishop of the Maronite Catholic Eparchy of Saint Maron of Sydney Antoine-Charbel Tarabay also welcomed the announcement from the Premier. “Funding will help us to continue serving the Maronite community in Harris Park and surrounds, and will enable us to meet the needs of our growing community,” he said.
